1 Knight Life The Official Publication of Father Rosensteel Council #2169 Vol. 70, No. 5, May 2004 GRAND KNIGHT S STATION William J. Draize As the Spring season progresses and the temperatures become a little warmer, with all of the outside chores to do, and watching the flowers bloom, we turn to the Maryland State Convention at Ocean City and look forward to meeting all of our brothers from other councils and all of the programs for the week-end. This year we can hope for some warm sunny weather. Looking forward to seeing many of you there. Being this is my next to last article that I will be writing, I would like to focus attention on our Faith and the Church. Our Lord and Savior told his faithful followers that we would always be subject to persecution and ridicule, but that he would always be there with us. One can t hardly pick up a newspaper or turn on the T.V. with out realizing this, and sometimes it comes from within our Church as well as outside sources. Our Holy Father Pope John Paul has criticized some of our Catholic politicians for the stands that they take in the support of abortion or (prochoice) as some may call it, as he well should. We all should be following the Magisterium (teaching authority) of our Church. The same with many other issues that the Church opposes. It s all put in front of us in the Scriptures and doctrines of the Church. How can we expect to face our final Judge on that last Day when we ignore the rules he set forth for us? I would really dread hearing I didn t Know You. The last item I want to bring up is that we are putting on a dinner for the wounded Soldiers in the Walter Reed Army Hospital, at the Council. The Washington DC Fire Dept. Emerald Society PIPES AND DRUMS in conjunction with Fr. Rosensteel Council 2169 will be hosting and entertaining these Soldiers on June 10, 2004 in the evening, and if you would like to help in this endeavor, Please let me know. May GOD BLESS each and every one of you! Deadline for next Knight Life - May 10th DISTRICT DEPUTY S REPORT Joseph M. Feakes First, I must apologize to all of our newsletter editors. With all the preparation for the Cardinal s Charity Ball, I missed my deadline for the District Deputy s article for May. Thank you brothers for your patience. The 44 th Cardinal s Charity Ball to support the Joseph P. Kennedy Institute was a tremendous success. I want to express my gratitude to everyone who contributed in any way. I don t have the final numbers yet, but I am certain that we will surpass last year s total. As I mentioned last month, May is a special time for all members of the Knights of Columbus and their families. May is Mary s month. Mary, Queen of the Knights deserves our special attention. Our Blessed Mother is the express lane to Our Lord and Savior. I ask that you set aside some time this month and pray your Rosary. You do know where it is? Our world is not a happy place right now. Our prayers and good works can make a difference. I know that every council has many activities planned for this month. I ask every Brother Knight to make some effort to attend at least one event. The Knights of Columbus needs every man active. I know that I didn t join just to pay dues, and I don t think you (Continued on page 8) Web site - CHAPLAIN S REPORT Rev. Joseph Perkins The Calvert family, their friends and supporters plus their love of the mother country greatly affected the naming of the major geographic divisions of the colony and future state. Maryland was named by King Charles I of England in honor of his French Catholic wife - Queen Henrietta Maria. Next is a listing of the name origins of the individual counties: St Mary - in honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary; Calvert the family name; Baltimore county and city the Calvert family estates in Ireland; Cecil - the Second Lord Baltimore / Charles The Third Lord Baltimore / Frederick - the Sixth Lord Baltimore / Harford - son of the Sixth Lord Baltimore; Anne Arundel - the wife of the Second Lord Baltimore and a member of one of the great Catholic families of England; Caroline the sister of the Sixth Lord Baltimore; Somerset - in honor of Mary Somerset, sister-inlaw of Cecil Calvert, the Second Lord Balti- (Continued on page 4)

Dad has taken over the Squires program this year. The twin daughters, Elizabeth and Melissa, worked this Easter in assisting with the Ice Cream Lady s Living Stations Program. The family is always present at every needy Food Basket program, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter preparing the bags of groceries and toys for the little ones. They are members of St. Catherine s parish. So when you see the George and Patricia Carter Family congratulate them. 3 MARY S WIDOWS The April luncheon meeting of Mary s Widows took place on Monday, the 5th at the Sir Walter Raleigh Restaurant on Montgomery Village Avenue in Gaithersburg. Forty five members were present. Hostesses were Helen Jordan and Margaret Maloney. Marian Ruck and Louise Githens had charge of the 50/50 which was won by Mary Peterson. The entrees were prime rib, crabcakes and Hawaiian chicken. There was a brief discussion on some of the dates for future meetings. All remaining luncheons for the year will continue to take place on the first Monday of the month with two exceptions. The July get together will be on the 12th and the September luncheon will be on the 13th. Don t forget that on June 7 all ladies will be the guests of father Rosensteel Council and the meeting will be at the Council. By this time all ladies should have their VIP cards from the State Council. If you have not received one please contact either Chairlady Lois Devlin at or your Council Coordinator at Any lady whose husband, at the time of his death, was a member in good standing of Fr. Rosensteel Council is eligible for membership in Mary s Widows and is cordially invited to attend our monthly luncheon meetings. William E. Fenton, Sr. PFN Coordinator 3 BRIAN GRAHAM Knights of Columbus Family Financial Fraternal Benefits "THE ORPHANS BENEFIT PROGRAM The Knights of Columbus has a very unique fraternal benefit that you might not be aware of It goes like this: If Dad or Mom and all eligible children (under age 18) have a life life insurance policy with the Order... than the children are automatically enrolled in the Order's Orphan's Program. The Orphans Program entitles each child to a monthly stipend of $80.00 up to age 21 and then the Order will give each child who wants to go to college a $7,000 grant for college. The Order will also allow the child to fully participate in the scholarship programs of the Knights of Columbus if they prove eligible. Currently there are many children receiving this benefit because their parents were either killed in a car accident or because their parents both died at different times of other causes. Once orphaned the benefits begin. While $80.00 a months doesn't sound like a lot... think about the dignity this gives the child. It allows that child a monthly amount of money to buy a C.D. gifts for their brothers and sisters for birthdays and Christmas and to have some spending money so they can feel some security and enjoy their childhood. Think of it like an allowance that we give them in your name when you are gone. By the way... it would take a $3 5,000 life insurance policy on your life to provide just one child with $80.00 a month of interest income. It would take $70,000 for 2 children and so on. All for free with this program. All it takes is for you or your wife to purchase one of our outstanding products on your life and to insurance each of your children with a small life insurance policy. The policies are wonderful benefits on their own... not to mention this great fraternal benefit. Do you family a favor and take advantage of this little known fraternal benefit... ROSENSTORKS Br. Ralph Vallone and his lovely bride, Annette became the proud parents of their third baby, Matthew Ralph Vallone, born on April 18, 2004 at 3:30AM at Holy Cross Hospital. I m sure big sister Rachael (who was also born on April 18) won t mind sharing her birthday with little Matt (I d stay away from the Vallone household each April 18 if I were you!). Also Br. David and his lovely bride Sharon, had their first new born Michael Hal Bowles came into the world on February 29th, 2004 at Sibley Hospital in Washington DC. CONGRATULATIONS Convention News Tony Horner The Convention Committee is ready to go! Plenty food & beverages will be available as usual. T-Shirts are on order and will be arriving soon. Once again our Council weatherman, John Neff, has assured me the weather will be great! For those of you who don t know John, he will be at the Convention to accept your thanks for the weather. Since the Preakness won t be going on this year Bob Wigmore has Rosensteel s Races planned. Also Mary Monti has a Hawaiian theme planned for one evening. Music, trivia, and dancing are just some of the activities. Don t be surprised if Don Hoe shows. So put on your grass skirt and get ready to get laid! Schedules will be posted on the hospitality room doors for hours of operation, food serving times, activities, etc. Don t forget to stop by the Bull on the Beach Thursday, at 1:00 for the kickoff. Oh, if you get a chance, stop by the Salty Dog and have a cold one. Bucksy, the owner, helps us with our supplies for the Convention, so stop by and say thanks to Bucksy! See you at the Beach! Thanks to all of you who have donated to the Building Association's Emergency Fund. Check's are still coming in. I hope to have a complete report in our next newsletter. PGK Frank Marchone KNIGHT OF THE MONTH For the month of May with the weather warming up and the flowers in bloom, we turn to some one that assists in the process of keeping our grounds not only presentable but also beautiful, This Brother can also be seen in the kitchen periodically helping with special affairs brunches and dinners. He helps us to purchase items that are needed to prepare these meals, from the store in which he manages. He is a member of St. John the Evangelist Parish and when you see Br. John H. Terrier, better known as Gus. Congratulate him as knight of the month.

4 4 COUNCIL ACTIVITIES Chancellor Patrick Bowles May is the month we celebrate Memorial Day as we pay tribute to the fallen hero s who defended our freedom and liberty throughout our great country s history. I would like to ask each brother Knight and their families to pray for these men and women who bravely made the ultimate sacrifice with their lives to protect our great nation and our way of life. I would also ask that each one of us proudly fly the red, white, and blue on Memorial Day in memory of these brave soldiers. May is also a busy month at the council; break-out the beach blanket and suntan lotion because we are headed to Ocean City for the state convention. Each year at the convention Father Rosensteel Council puts on a first class event. We will have the usual two hospitality rooms and plenty of activities for all ages. If you have not been to a convention this might be an opportunity for you to have a great weekend at the beach and mingle with your brother Knights and their families. We also have nominations for chair officers in May and as your Chancellor I have tried hard to serve you well over the past year. With humility I ask that you support me for the position of Deputy Grand Knight in the upcoming election that will be held at the June business meeting. I give you my word that I will be faithful to the council and will serve you with hard work and enthusiasm as I have done this year. I would be remiss if I failed to mention that this month we also pay tribute to our Mother s; therefore, I would like to wish Mom an exceptionally Happy Mother s Day as well as all of my other Mother s, e.g., Aunt Anna, my Maryknight s Mother s and all of the wonderful ladies who have been so supportive of me through the years. Mom thanks for putting-up with me, I love you. Happy Mother s Day to all Mother s! In closing, it is fitting to leave you with this thoughtful quote as we celebrate Memorial Day: And I'm proud to be an American, where at least I know I'm free, and I won't forget the men who died, who gave that right to me and I'll proudly stand next to him to defend her still today, cuz there aint no doubt I love this land, God Bless the USA --Lee Greenwood (Continued from page 1) Chaplain s Report more; Talbot in honor of Grace Talbot, sisterin-law of Cecil Calvert, the Second Lord Baltimore; Worcester and Dorchester were named after titled friends of the Calvert family; Kent after a county in England; Queen Anne and Prince George counties were named after the Queen and her Danish husband; Carroll, Howard, Montgomery and Washington counties were named after American Revolutionary War heroes; Allegany and Wicomico are Native American in origin and Garrett County was named after a nineteenth century Maryland banker. Grand Knights from Montgomery County display a check for over $65,000 which was collected during this years Tootsie Roll Drive to help mentally handicapped children in this area.

5 GENERAL PROGRAMS DGK Peter Bonin Though April showers may come your way there are days that shine with the joy of children laughing and playing. One occasion that brightened their day was the visit of the easter bunny and having their pictures taken while mother goose talked to them and read stories. After storytelling, mother goose asked them question and to her surprise many children raised their hands anxiously waiting to be called upon. There were many other things to do planned by the Ralph Vallone family and his committee., of course refreshments were served, hot dogs, potato chips, soda and the most beautiful cup cakes you would ever see. Another affair was the distribution of food baskets during Easter week. Tom Murphy and his committee never fail to put their best foot forward for this worthy project. The council thanks all of them for their concern and devotion to the needy.. The nuns appreciation night, chaired by Wally Horner and his competent staff of volunteers will again make this event be one done.with a touch of class. the cardinal's ball was well attended with 42 people from Rosensteel council. The grand knight chartered a bus to transport the members to Lowe s l' enfant plaza hotel in Washington, DC the silent auction was a huge success as most everyone from left without purchasing an item or two. One of the auction items obtained is a new set of billiard balls with rack for the carroll room. A special activity to benefit the council was held on this past Sunday evening. This is done each year by the Mary knights. Patrick Mulhern, an Irish tenor, accompanied by two exceptional musicians entertained us with numerous Irish ballads and a bit of Irish humor. Attendance at this affair {in my opinion} should have been better as the support o f council members was a bit on the shy side. For those who were there a good time was had by all. At this writing the following affairs are to be held ---birthright dinner & auction and nun appreciation night. As you can see, the month of April proved to be busy and the month of may looks the same. May the lord be always at your side. JMJ pray for us. 5 SURGE WITH SERVICE! CHURCH ACTIVITIES Wally Horner Honor the Blessed Mother The month of May is dedicated to the Blessed Mother. May is a beautiful month and what is more fitting than to honor the Blessed Mother in heaven by saying the rosary daily. If you can t say the rosary at one time, try to say one decade at a time during the course of the day. Mother's Day Mother s Day is celebrated on May 9th. On this special day let us remember our Mother by offering up our Sunday Mass for her. What greater gift or sign of love can we give our Mother than having the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass offered for her. HAPPY MOTHER S DAY! Nun s Appreciation Night We celebrated the 32nd Annual Nun s Appreciation Night on April 22nd. A complete summary of this special affair will be forthcoming in the June Knight Life. Thanks to all the volunteers that helped make this event a happy one for the Sisters. Proposed Council Budget Fraternal year Prepared by DGK Peter D. 6 6 Fred Horner Memorial Golf Tournament Seventy golfers braved the treacherous April weather (upper 80 s with a slight wind) to unwind in this year s annual Fred Horner Memorial spring golf tournament. This years outing was held at Cross Creek GC on April 19. After golfing, the golfers were treated to a surf and turf treat back at the Council, along with complimentary beverages and many golf prizes. The Gambling Hole at the course helped to raise $426 which will be given to the Children's Inn at NIH in Fred Horner s name. Special thanks goes to Br. Timmy Morse who did all the kitchen duty that day and FS Mike Haley who ran the Gambling Hole for the event. Br. Frank Laddbush demonstrates the proper form of golfing etiquette including How to keep the Cuban lit while driving. Ex-Building Association President, Terry Hunter, shows off his Long Drive swing. 7 MEMBERSHIP Dan Gargano A fraternal organization is a group of people coming together for mutual benefit. The knight of Columbus is a fraternal organization of catholic men devoted to mutual aid and assistance among its members and their families. The founders of the order believed that a local fraternal insurance society was needed. They were concerned with local parishes where everyone knew every one else and the character and reliability of members was known. With the orders growth to international proportions recruitment of members of good character has become difficult. None of us can know everything that is in a person s heart and mind so we should be selective in who we invite to join us. We should try to recruit men who are known, to the best of our knowledge, to be of good character and reliable. Sponsors should be willing to accompany their candidate s to degrees and encourage their participation in council activities and programs. On Tuesday, April 20th, we had a first degree and welcomed 4 new members to Fr. Rosensteel Council. We d like to welcome to our order: Timothy Kehoe George Murphy William Whetzel B. Gerard Trancone or Secretary...Cecile Fecteau Treasurer....Nancy Marchone Historian...Jenny Wilson At the Maryknights' April meeting Captain Kline of the Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Department gave an instructive talk on Fire Prevention in the Home for the Elderly. (Good Heavens! He isn't talking about US, is he?). All joking aside, the talk gave important information and we appreciate Captain Kline's taking time to address us and to distribute a packet of materials, which contain useful information about fire prevention and protection. It is usual at the April meeting for the Nominations Committee to announce the candidates for office for the coming year. Kay Nolan, Chairman reported the following results for the Maryknights year 2004/05: President - Kathy Ardvelund V. President - Jerry Mell Treasurer - Nancy Marchone Secretary - Marguerite Suckacz Historian - Helen Vallone Additional nominations may be made from the floor at the May meeting prior to voting, provided the nominee has signified willingness to serve. Thanks to Kay Nolan and her committee for the selection of a great slate of nominees and to the candidates for accepting the responsibility to serve as officers. At the meeting the 50/50 prize was won by Carmella Plunkett and the door prize was won by, guess? Carmella Plunkett. Sit next to Carmella at the next meeting, maybe some of her luck will rub off. The Murder Mystery Theater Brunch on March 28 was suspenseful and fun. Some members of the audience had parts in the play and a lovely "chorus line" of dancers, selected from the audience, performed to "Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend." As brunch was served, members of the cast, in the role of their character, mingled with the guests giving clues and MIS-information. Prizes were awarded to those who solved "whodunit." It was truly a successful "Joint Venture" which was sponsored by the Knights and the Maryknights. On April 18, the annual "Special Activity" of the Maryknights to benefit the Council was Patrick Mulhern, Irish tenor in his program of "Songs from the Heart."After a warm introduction by Arlene Draize, Patrick, in a relaxed and easy-going manner, sang many favorite Irish songs and encouraged the audience to join in the chorus. He also included the sacred songs "Panis Angelicus" and Shubert's "Ave Maria" as well as some show tunes, the lovely sentimental tune "Daddy's Little Girl" and the patriotic ballad "What is America to Me." We owe appreciation to Ann Brown and her committee for making the arrangements for a totally enjoyable evening. As we enter the month of May, the month of Mary, the month of Mothers, we love and honor Mary as our Maryknights' Patroness, as the Mother of God and as our Heavenly Mother. We love and honor our own mothers, venerating their memories if they have gone before us. There is a proverb that says, "God couldn't be everywhere, so He made mothers" Jane Johnson (Continued from page 1)District Deputy s Report did either. If you are not sure what programs are planed, call your Grand Knight. If you find something that you like, volunteer to help. You will be surprised how much more you will get out of it. We only have a few weeks left in this fraternal year, but don t quit on your membership activities. Everyone is on the membership committee. If you have some ideas for activities for next year, contact one of your council officers. We are always looking for new ways to include as many members and their families as possible. Hope to see you at the State Convention. From Yen, Nu, Lynn, and me, Vivat Jesus! Youth Activities Ralph Vallone Youth activities are a very important aspect of our council; it allows us the opportunity to entertain, speak with, and educate youth in our community. During the month of April, Father Rosensteel Council hosted our yearly Children s Easter party. Approximately 60 children in all attended the event. Thank you to Chairman Ralph Vallone and wife Helen and all those who assisted in making the event an overwhelming success. Congratulations on a job well done!
