Knight Life 1 The Official Publication of Father Rosensteel Council #2169 Vol. 69, No. 2, February 2003 GRAND KNIGHT S STATION Frank J. Marchone Well, whachathink?? Will the groundhog see his shadow on the 2 nd? I hope not because I ve had enough cold weather and snow. And I m NOT going home to Punxsutawney to see for myself. BIG NEWS! I received a letter from Carl A. Anderson, Supreme Knight, advising me that Rosensteel s Family of the Month for November (Dan and Beth Ward) was chosen at random at the Supreme Council office as one of the 100 winners to receive a Holy Family Statuette for their home. Congratulations, Dan and Beth! Congratulations also to Chuck Suraci for a very successful Pro Life Kick-Off Rally last month. Tony Melendez and his band gave quite a performance and a wonderful witness to the evils of abortion. Rosensteel also had a good turnout for the Youth Mass preceding the March for Life. For those of you who haven t yet paid your dues, don t forget the five chances for the Vacation Raffle sponsored by the State Council to support restoration of the Basilica of the Assumption in Baltimore. Many thanks to those of you who have already participated. Wouldn t it be great if a member of Rosensteel wins? Some of you may not be aware that the Knights of Columbus has a Shrine Usher Program. If any of you Brother Knights would like to usher at the Shrine, please call Guy Bellia at If you like beach music you should come to the Beach Party on February 22 nd. If you are limber enough for the limbo, we ll find out how low can you go? I understand the rooms are going fast at the Howard Johnson for the State Convention May 15, 16, & 17. Don t delay in calling our DGK Bill Draize to sign up, especially if you want a particular floor. Happy Valentine s Day to all the sweethearts (and the sour hearts, too). Deadline for next Knight Life - February 20th DISTRICT DEPUTY S REPORT Joseph M. Feakes It is all about life. Recently several events have reminded me how precious a human life really is. I participated in a pro-life project at Father Peter Paul Maher Council, attended the Pro-Life Rally at Father Rosensteel Council, and, in a small way, assisted at the funeral of Father Canice Treacy at St. Peters. What do all these events have in common? They all demonstrate how much we rely on others as we go through our lives. From the very beginning to the very end we need someone to help us, to look out for us, to pray for us. We, as Knights of Columbus and protectors of life, are given a unique opportunity to play a part in the lives of so many people. As individuals we may feel helpless. However, as councils, chapters, assemblies, and states we can and do make a difference. The most important element in any of our programs is the part that improves or protects peoples lives. I ask each of you as we go through the final months of this fraternal year to pay special attention to those parts of your council activities that touch peoples lives. (Continued on page 4) Web site - CHAPLAIN S REPORT Rev. Joseph Perkins It was halfway through last year when I was asked to become Chaplain of this Council. After having accepted, I was able to write a few columns that were published in the Council's newsletter. Since it was close to the busy Advent - Christmas season, I was unable to give any specifics on my previous involvement with the Knights but now that things have quieted down, here they are: As an associate at St. Matthias in Lanham, Md., I was asked to become Chaplain of the Mother Seton Council #5381, located on Church property. I received my First Degree there on August 5, My Second Degree was received November 13, 1986 at the Sacred Heart Council #2577 in Bowie, Md. My Third Degree was received on February 22, 1986 at the Father Rosensteel Council #2169 in Silver Spring, Md. My Fourth Degree was received on February 22, 1987 in New Carrollton, Md., and I was associated with the Bishop James E. Walsh Assembly which met at the St. Pius X Council #4076 in Forestville, Md. I am looking forward to working along with this Council to achieve its spiritual and material goals. May God's peace be with you always!

Suraci JUST THE FACTS Here are the facts that a lot of pro-life Catholics simply do not want to face. No one who supports a single abortion is pro-life. No one who supports contraception is pro-life or pro-family. No one who endorses a single pro-abort for public office is pro-life. No one who is pro-life appoints those who are pro-death to his administration. Rhetoric must be translated into concrete and consistent policies. The biennial effort to pass a partial, conditional ban on partial birth abortions will be heralded as a great success in the battle for life when it is indeed a tragic deception, a defeat for the personhood principle. Thanks for the great turnout for the Annual Kick-Off Rally!

3 NEWS FROM SUPREME Knights of Columbus Leader Calls Abortion 'A Stain on Our Nation' "30 years after Roe v. Wade, abortion is a choice 'no society should tolerate.'" New Haven The following statement was issued by Knights of Columbus Supreme Knight Carl Anderson, regarding the 30th year of the Supreme Court's Roe v. Wade abortion decision: "This year, on Jan. 22, we note with great sadness, but greater determination, the 30th year of legalized abortion on demand in the United States. "For 30 years, abortion has been a stain on our nation; a deep wound in our nation's soul. Abortion is the negation of our nation's commitment to human rights and the equal dignity of every individual. It is a tragedy that sets women against their own children. This is a choice no woman should ever have to make. This is a choice no society should tolerate. "Our society can, and must, do better to address the needs of women, rather than leaving them and their children to the violence of abortion. Young people, especially, understand this. Abortion holds less and less appeal for the generation raised under Roe v. Wade. More and more young people identify themselves as pro-life and they are renewing the ranks of the pro-life movement The abortion rate is at its lowest since the decision was first handed down, due to the decline in abortion among younger women. Young people who grew up under Roe v. Wade have seen the damage wrought by abortion and they demand better. "As we note this 30th year of abortion on demand, we are confident of the day when we will instead celebrate its end, when the law will no longer protect the violence of abortion, but will instead protect the lives and dignity of both women and their unborn children." With more than 1.6 million members throughout North America and elsewhere, the Knights is the world's largest Catholic family fraternal service organization. In 2001 members reported raising and contributing to charity a record $125 million and volunteering a record 58.9 million hours of service. Included in that figure is approximately $3.8 million raised and distributed to pro-life groups. 4 BRIAN GRAHAM Knights of Columbus Family Financial Fraternal Benefits A WIDOW S WORLD IS A TOUGH ONE When a man dies, so does his income. His pension is usually cut in half. His widow gets her husband s social security... but loses hers. His group life insurance has been eliminated or greatly reduced. Welcome to the world of our widows, gentlemen. Statistically your death will put her at or below the poverty level. Now she must survive for another years. Let me help you do the planning that s necessary to avoid this situation. If you don t crunch the numbers with a pro... you re guessing with the amateurs. There s too much on the line not to nail this one down, men. 4 (Continued from page 1)District Deputy s Report I believe that if you look closely at all the committees and programs within your council you will find that each and every one of them have an impact on life. Certainly one of the most significant things you can do in another man s life is to ASK him to join the Knights of Columbus. Offer him and his family the opportunity to make a difference. Membership is always at the top of our priorities. So far this year we have been doing pretty well. Keep up the good work. I want to thank all the Grand Knights, their officers, committee chairmen, and all the members for a very fine effort for the first six months of this fraternal year. You have made significant progress towards your program, membership, and insurance goals. I would very much like to see each council achieve Star Council status. You still have time. Finally, don t forget about the raffle to support the restoration of the Basilica in Baltimore. This is an excellent chance to show your support for the State Program and to bring some funds into the council. The council keeps 40 cents of every dollar. Thank you for all your hard work. May God bless you and may God bless America. Vivat Jesus SCHOLARSHIPS Father Rosensteel Council will be sponsoring a scholarship program again this year as in the past. There will be four (4) $500 grants for students attending Catholic schools grade 1-8 as well as one (1) $1000 grant for a student attending a Catholic school grades Only one scholarship will be awarded per family. Applications will be available in the Knights Room on December 14. These must be received, by mail, no later than March 15, 2003, at the address listed on the application. All grants will be awarded in late April for this school year, Only children and grandchildren of Rosensteel Knights in good standing will be eligible. For any further information contact Brother Steve Clarke at FAMILY OF THE MONTH The February Family of the Month is in St. Jude s Parish where they serve as Eucharistic Ministers. He is retired from the Army Map Service and she is a retired school teacher. He is a past president of the Building Association. He has several responsibilities at Rosensteel this year, but still finds time to cook pizzas every Wednesday for bingo and work on one of the Friday night kitchen crews. Things are really picking up for him right now because he is starting to take reservations for the convention in May. She s no slouch either. She heads the ESOL program at St. Jude s and is currently the President of the Maryknights. I present to you the February Family of the Month, Bill and Arlene Draize. Give them a pat on the back when you see them. MEMBERSHIP During the January Social meeting, eleven Candidates took the First Degree of our Order. Philip Atzert Peter Brescia Michael Cammack John Dalbora John McGloon Bill Meekins William Ries John Sollers Michael Stanton William Twombly Henry Welsh Welcome aboard to Fr. Rosensteel Council! KNIGHT OF THE MONTH The February Knight of the Month is a very active member of St. Catherine s Parish. He is in charge of the church bazaar, heads up the CYO, and coaches the children in sports. He is employed by a beverage distributor. Members of our council really notice him during the weeks preceding Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter. That s when he is really busy at Rosensteel preparing food baskets for the less fortunate in our area. He has been doing a great job for several years and is a great asset to our council. The Chairman for Needy Family Food Baskets is also our February Knight of the Month, Tom Murphy. Congratulations, Tom!

5 BLOOD DRIVE UPDATE I am happy to report that Fr. Rosensteel had another successful Blood Drive on December 7th. Thanks to all of the donors that participated in this worthy cause. Forty units of blood was donated to the Washington Hospital center, Blood donor services. It was great seeing the young people donating! Sean Shinke coming in for his first time, and the beautiful Budelman sisters, Jessica and Erin! And how about Coach John Simmons showing up with his world class rugby team to donate! In the calendar year of 2002, 108 units of blood was donated by the Council as a result of 3 blood drives. Additionally, 2 platelet donations were made at the Washington Hospital Center for Fr. Rosensteel Council. Thanks, once again, for a great job done! Red Smith George Gallagher Tony Melendez poses with GK Marchone before his performance at the Annual Pro-Life Kick-Off Rally. ST. PATRICK S DINNER DANCE During the cocktail hour 6-6:30 PM the Famous Irish Culkin Dancers will be performing. These famous dancers, because of their expertise, have performed at the Kennedy Center, Wolf Trap, and the White House for the President of the United States with great acclamation. During the evening, there will be an Irish sing-a-log with an accordionist to create a personal touch... music by Nancy.

6 ANNUAL KICKOFF RALLY The 13th Annual Pro-Life Kickoff Rally was held on Sunday, January 12th, The Color Corp. of Cardinal O Boyle Assembly (left) added pageantry to the event, which was attended by a large audience, and included many members of the Knights of Columbus, including State Deputy Richard Sherbert and his wife Barbara, State Secretary Ron White and his wife Jackie, and State Treasurer Edgar Haynes and his wife Lisa (Bottom). MARY S WIDOWS Members of Mary s Widows have thrown in the towel with regards to luncheon meetings in January and February. For the past five years either snow or the threat of snow has caused them numerous cancellations. Last year the Board of Directors voted to do away with gatherings during these two months. Now the ladies meet every month from March through December. Our next luncheon meeting will be on Monday, March 3rd, 2003 at a place to be announced. Chairlady Ruth Ferraro was unanimously reelected to a second term at the December meeting. She is busy lining up hostesses for the coming luncheons. Her number is Ruth will be happy to answer any questions you may have. Remember any lady whose husband, at the time of his death, was a member in good standing at Fr. Rosensteel Council is eligible for membership in Mary s Widows and is cordially invited to join us at our monthly meetings. In all the hullabalo over which pills and medicines to take for colds, sore throats, and scores of illnesses, don t forget the most successful remedy of all; having your throat blessed on St. Blaise Day, February 3rd. Among the many miracles attributed to St. Blaise there is cited one in which he cures a boy who was choking from a fishbone. Thus he is venerated as the Patron Saint against diseases of the throat. William E. Fenton, Sr. PFN Coordinator

CHURCH ACTIVITIES Wally Horner Communion Breakfast for Proiect Gabriel This communion breakfast was a fundraiser for the Gabriel Project. Tony Homer and his crew prepared and served a delicious breakfast for 163 in attendance. The breakfast consisted of orange juice, fruit cocktail, scrambled eggs, sausage, ham, fried potatoes, french toast, biscuits and coffee. A special thanks to the following volunteers for a job well done: Ross Baccanari, Steve Caffi, Geoff Conway, Becky Crowley, Wally and Ellie Homer, Joe Knapeck, Don and Rose McGillivary,Ceci Sgarlata, Carl Spellacy, 4 and Alex Matosian. Holv Season of Lent Lent begins on 5 March, Ash Wednesday. Since Lent is late this year, let us all start thinking about our good deeds and resolutions during Lent. Several spiritual suggestions are: to love thy neighbor as thyself, attend daily mass and receive the Holy Eucharist, recite the rosary daily or as often as possible. On the material side-: volunteer your time and talents in your parish school and church and by promoting Council activities. Mass and Communion Breakfast for Deceased Members of the Council On 2 March, the Council will have mass at the historic St. John's Church for deceased members of our Council. Breakfast will be served after mass. Please obtain tickets for the breakfast from Chancellor Pete Bonin. Supporting the Institute Servants of the Lord and the Virgin of Matara in Washington, DC Our committee has donated $ to help support the new sisters in formation. This is an important time of life for them, and even more since they are just starting in the religious life. Please pray for them. In addition, one of our committee members, Steve Caffi, who owns Rockville Auto and Truck Service,, is providing maintenance on their vehicles at no cost to them. Thanks Steve! NOTICE: FR. ROSENSTEEL COUNCIL WILL BE HOLDING A SECOND DEGREE ON FEBRUARY 18TH AND A THIRD DEGREE ON MARCH 14TH. THIS IS AN EXCELLENT TIME FOR FIRST DEGREE MEMBERS TO RE- CEIVE THESE DEGREES 7 SURGE WITH SERVICE! COMMUNITY ACTIVITIES Warden Richard Podrasky Normally this column relates the Community activities of the past. This month, this New Year, with all the New Year resolutions being made: I'll talk about the future. How involved are you within your own community and the community of Knights of Columbus? Do you call the neighbor who is lonely and talk to him/her? Do you take a meal over to the friend who just returned from the hospital? Do you shovel the sidewalk of that elderly person after the snowfall? Do you open the car door for your spouse or hold the door open for the next person? Do you stop smoking during the dinner hour on Friday nights so the other Knights and there spouses can eat without the annoyance? Do you stop and shake the hand of the stranger next to you during the "Sign of Peace" in church, wish them peace, and mean it? Do you volunteer to help those who need assistance? Let's make this, your Community, a better community in the Year Take time and make a New Year's resolution: let us make one BIG resolution. As Catholic men, let us resolve to become Catholic Gentlemen. GENERAL PROGRAMS DGK William Draize The forms for this years State Convention are available in the Knights room on the table by the sign-in sheet. I will have forms available at the meetings. Should you have any questions concerning prices, room location, or just need information in general, my telephone number is Please call, and I will do my best to come up with the information. Remember these rooms will go on a first come first serve basis. Plan to attend the State Convention, as always, Fr. Rosensteel Council has a great time. This year we have ordered a beautiful, warm, sunny, weekend for your enjoyment. I would like to emphasize the importance of BINGO to our membership, and how vital that program is, in supporting our many programs that we have at Fr. Rosensteel. With out Bingo it would be impossible to continue our annual picnic, hospitality rooms at the state convention, the smoker, and keeping the prices down at family night, also for lower cost of beverages in both the Knights room and the Columbian room. For many of the charitable programs it would be difficult to administer, especially Food for the needy. Support for the seminarians, the Priesthood, and all of our Church projects. So I m asking for help from those that have a free Wednesday evening, or some free Wednesdays that you could donate your time and keep the Bingo Program alive and well. I would be very grateful for your participation and glad to talk to those interested. I would like to thank and welcome Jim Poulos and Francis Posniewski as new members of the Bingo work force. I also would like to Thank those that have been with the program for, in some cases many years, a long time. May God Bless each of You and Your Families. CELL PHONES WANTED! The MaryKnights are collecting used cell phones and chargers to be distributed to Senior citizens and battered women. If you have any, please contact Arlene Draize (301)
