3 LITANY OF DEACON INSTALLATION COVENANT OF COMMITMENT (Responsive) There are different gifts, BUT IT IS THE SAME SPIRIT WHO GIVES THEM. There are different ways of serving God, BUT IT IS THE SAME GOD WHO IS SERVED. God works through different people in different ways, BUT IT IS THE SAME GOD WHO ACHIEVES GOD S PURPOSE THROUGH THEM ALL. Each one is given a gift by the Spirit, TO USE IT FOR THE COMMON GOOD. Together, we are the Body of Christ AND INDIVIDUALLY MEMBERS OF HIM. Though we have different gifts, together we are a ministry of reconciliation led by the risen Christ. We work and pray to make His church useful in the world, and we call men and women to faith, so that, in the end, every knee shall bow and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. Within our common ministry, some members are chosen for a particular work. We gather today to confirm that Timothy Cooper, Jeanean Duke, Joyce Mantiply, Don Martineau, Frances Melton, Mark Parent, Wayne Stone, John Smith and Ben Worley have been chosen for this special ministry. CONGREGATIONAL AFFIRMATION Is it your desire that these candidates be installed as deacons for special service to this congregation? IT IS. Will you uphold them in this ministry? WE WILL. We recognize the particular ministry to which they have been called, remembering that our Lord Jesus said: Whoever would be first among you must be slave to all. For the Son of Man also came not to be served but to serve, and to give His live as a ransom for many. Go therefore and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you. And lo, I am with you always even to the end of the world.
4 COVENANT WITH DEACONS God has called you to serve Jesus Christ and this congregation in a special way. As deacons of this church, it will be your task to proclaim by word and deed the Gospel of Jesus Christ. You are to love and serve the people of this fellowship, caring alike for the young and old, strong and weak, rich and poor. You are to strengthen Christ s people so that they might make Christ known as Savior and the Lord, share in the renewing of His word, and glorify God in all things. Do you believe that you are called by God and by the church to this ministry? WE DO. Will you be faithful in prayer and in the reading and study of the Holy Scriptures, and will you try hard to lead a life worthy of the calling to which you have been called? WE WILL. Will you proclaim the Gospel, speaking if necessary, and endeavor through the ministries of this church to lead others into an acceptance of the cost and joy of discipleship, and will you thus live in the spirit of Christ by the power of the Holy Spirit? WE WILL. Will you undertake to be a faithful leader to all to whom you are called to serve, laboring together with them to build up the family of God? WE WILL. Will you devote time, energy, and skills in efforts to lead this congregation to a higher awareness of and deeper commitment to the worship of Almighty God and to the missionary imperative of the Gospel? WE WILL. May the Lord who has given you the will to do these things give you the grace and power to perform them. QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS RE MAILING OFFERING ENVELOPES Q Q Q How much does it cost to mail offering envelopes? A $369 How is this expense paid? A In two ways: the very first envelope in each box is titled Initial Offering and some include a check to help with the expenses ($500 this year) and any remaining is included in the Annual Operating Ministry Budget. Wouldn t the church save at least one or two hundred dollars if the offering envelope boxes were simply displayed on a table or in the Sunday School classrooms and members picked them up and took them home? A While it sounds counter- intuitive, this method actually results in a loss of revenue. Examples include: a family member picks up and then misplaces the box of envelopes and therefore does not have an envelope and the offering is forgotten or delayed and a new box of offering envelopes is ordered at additional expense; a box is taken by a visitor to the church or moved for a meeting and gets lost or misplaced in the shuffle; someone
8 Q Q Q is late in picking up and misses the first month and that monthly gift could well exceed the cost of mailing many other examples could be cited. What is the best method for making sure every member actually receives and gets home with the offering envelopes? A Conversations with a number of other churches and our own experience indicate mailing is the preferred method. How can we make sure every person actually uses them regularly? A Please, please, please offer your best thoughts? Why do we use offering envelopes? A Our envelope system is imperative to our church support program and the recording of your offering. As a non- profit church, we issue annual and confidential contribution statements which members use in the preparation of their annual Internal Revenue Service tax filings and claims of charitable deductions and these statements provide the required documentation; it helps with our annual planning and financial systems.
