TUESDAY MAY 11: COUNCIL MEETING AND FIRST DE- GREE In Burnett Hall at 7:30 PM. Degree candidates should be there at 7:00 PM. During the meeting, the nominating committee will present a slate of officers for the upcoming fraternal year. Not on the list? Step forward to volunteer! SATURDAY MAY 15: POKER NIGHT 7:30 PM at John O Reilly s house, Briarwood Ln., Mokena. (708) To get there turn East onto Cleveland Road from Wolf Road (about 1/5 Mi South of Hickory Creek) and then turn South onto Briarwood Lane at the top of the rise. John lives near the end of Brairwood Lane. Come and take some of your brother s cash! FRIDAY MAY 21 AND SATUR- DAY MAY 22: THE CHAL- LENGE MEN S CONFERENCE Boys to men to fishers of men. An extravaganza for fathers and their sons. At Providence High School in New Lenox. Friday night from 5 to 10 PM. Saturday from 8 AM until 5 PM. Come with your sons and be inspired by courageous Christian speakers including our Bishop J Peter Sartain! (See the flyer on page 8) MONDAY MAY 24; MEMORIAL DAY PARADE AND MASS This is the annual ceremony to honor those who have preceded us. Mass is in the old St Mary Church in the cemetery on Wolf Road at 9 AM. The parade starts there at 10 AM. Fourth Degree should be in regalia. This is a wonderful family event. (see the article.)

Insurance company profits have supplied millions for Katrina Relief, to rebuild the façade of St Peters in Rome, to support missions around the world and many more worthy charitable goals.

Social Safety Nets did not exist, the Church provided help but usually did not have a lot to share. The Knights of Columbus was among a number of organizations that were formed partly to provide insurance for the families of men who suddenly died or were incapacitated. Knights of Columbus Insurance is now one of the most highly rated and successful companies in the world. The rates are competitive or better than other companies. Annuities and Long Term Care Insurance are a great buy from the Knights. The best part of the K of C Insurance is where the insurance company profits go to charities around the world instead of to stockholders. Look into it. Our Insurance man is Field Agent John Cinkus, Phone (773) john.cinkus@kofc.org COUNCIL SOCIAL AND OPEN HOUSE The Open House held at the VFW on April 20 was a great success. We sent letters to the fathers of all the students at St Mary School inviting them to come and join us. Three of them did and we expect all three to be inducted into the order at the May meeting. Two of the three won a prize in the raffle we announced so that Mr. Dan Pikowitz won $50 and Mr. Bob Rafferty won $25. The third new knight who came was Mr. Bill Skedd. We had a good time with an open bar, hot dogs and potato chips produced by Master Chef Bob Strezo and sports on TV. The cost of the event was nominal at about $ 175 so that this could be a sign of things to come! The wives plan our lives while the guys drink beer!

The tall gent with the hat is Joe Scheidler, president and leader of the Pro Life Action League. Two demonstrations were conducted on April 10 one on Wolf Road and US 30 and the other shown above. About thirty persons took part in each demonstration. A total of nine members of our council came to defend life at one or both of the demonstrations along with four wives and several other St Mary parishioners. Those who object to the graphic nature of the displays should be aware that the pictures shown are nothing more than photographs of choice so that those who have been misinformed as to what is really happening can learn the truth. Those driving by these displays almost always have a positive reaction to them with a few persons objecting. Demonstrators see a lot of thumbs up. It is a wonderful way to defend life. The Pro Life Action League schedules monthly demonstrations that are placed in various locales around the Chicago area. Sometime this summer, another event will be scheduled for Joliet and Plainfield that is usually even better attended. Last year demonstrations were conducted at Larkin and Jefferson Streets, Route 59 and Caton Farm Road and Route 59 and US 30. St Mary Church in Plainfield served a lunch to the participants between events. Plan to join the League!

4 Larry Jourdan Berkot s Manager Jeff Hoffman Program Director Joe Kral FIRST FOOD PANTRY DELIVERY On Tuesday March 18, Joe Kral, Council Program Director, assisted by Larry Jourdan took delivery of the first monthly installment of food items promised to the Frankfort Township Food Pantry by our Council. This month ketchup, mayonnaise and syrup were needed. The food is supplied by Berkot s Manager Jeff Hoffman at the price the store pays. Food deliveries will be made monthly with Pantry Director Maryfran Drymiller providing a monthly list of needed items to our council representative. 5 ARE YOU A LEADER OF MEN? DO YOU WANT. MORE OUT OF LIFE? BE AN OFFICER IN THE KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS! The Knights of Columbus is a dynamic, growing organization for good that depends entirely on volunteers who come forward to lead the Order. Each year elections are held in June to select the officers who will lead each council for the following year. There are two kinds of positions elected and unelected. The elected positions serve for one year starting on July first. The unelected positions are appointed by and serve at the discretion of the Grand Knight. There are many spots to fill. To be an officer of the Knights of Columbus you must be a Third Degree Member. No other qualification is needed. The current elected officers are listed on the front of this newsletter. A nomination committee is now in place that will submit a preliminary list of nominees for the June election at the May meeting. If you would like to be considered contact Joe Kral at (708) or plan to place your name in nomination at the June meeting of the council. The list of proposed nominees that will be submitted at the May meeting is only a suggested list and is subject to nominations from the floor at the June meeting. All Third Degree Knights are urged to seriously consider serving the council as an elected officer! THE MEMORIAL DAY PARADE! This Mokena tradition consists of a Memorial Mass in the old St Mary Church in the cemetery at 195th and Wolf Road followed by a series of memorial services at each of the three cemeteries that lie along Wolf Road. The Mass is at 9 AM with the Fourth Degree Color Guard in regalia honoring the celebrant. The parade, conducted by the Veterans of Foreign Wars, starts at 10 AM with a military memorial service for our honored dead in the St Mary Cemetery, The VFW, followed by the Fourth Degree Color Guard, high school and grammar school bands and a large group of citizens then marches along Wolf Road to the Pioneer cemetery just South of the railroad, where another memorial service is conducted. After the ceremony in the pioneer cemetery, the parade continues to St John s cemetery 1/4 mile South of Berkots for the final memorial service. This traditional event is always a high point in the annual life of Mokena.
