4 Opiio A4 Thursday, OCTOBER 25, 2018 From the Editor s Desk Good sports Life i the Lakes Regio ca be a tough ad tricky thig. Some of our summer, sprig ad witer moths have bee kow to deliver a lot of misery, with edless rai, sow, ice, ad summer heat. Those seasos are defiitely challegig. But there is a argumet to be made that October is the hardest moth.for a osports fa. October hosts a perfect storm of post-seaso major league baseball, pre-seaso NBA basketball, ad the promisig early weeks of the Natioal Hockey League ad of course NFL Sudays ( ad Modays. Ad Thursdays.) Ad everywhere you go, people are talkig about sports. The talk at the office ad i lie at the store is all about the Red Sox, Patriots ad evetually the Celtics. How will Kyrie do with the Celtics this year? Ca the Sox make it all the way? How log will Brady be able to make it happe? How about those Bruis? October is a buffet lie filled with the best of professioal sports ad we are ready to dig i! But what if you re the oe perso i tow who does t kow Tom Brady from Alex Cora? What if Moday morig fids you mumblig a sheepish hello to co-workers who ca t stop high-fivig each other about the Patriots easy wi ad you thik it s a Revolutioary War referece? How does a o-sports fa survive the moth of October i a regio steeped i professioal sports greatess? Well, first of all, take comfort: there s pumpki spice ad maple flavor lots of it. There are also hayrides ad harvest festivals, flael shirts ad cozy sweatshirts. There are craft fairs, warm cider, ad cold cruchy leaves. There are football games - the fu high school type, complete with marchig bads ad drum battles. There s Hallowee ad trick-ortreat ad spooky iflatable ghosts, pumpkis ad spiders. If Red SOX do t do it for you, how about the red leaves of the sugar maples? There is t a more beautiful ad colorful regio i the coutry tha the Lakes Regio i October. The lakes ad woods ad moutais that surroud us might ot offer may Brui sightigs but they have their share of coyotes, bats, squirrels, raccoos, wild turkey ad moose. Takig othig away from our frieds ad eighbors who sped October glued to ay device that will live-stream the MLB playoffs, it is evertheless great to remember that this regio is our playgroud ad it s there to be ejoyed all year log, i every seaso. But the colorful, magical, pumpki-spice-sceted moth of October just seems to well hit a grad slam. 5 Letters to the Editor To the Editor: Over the last several years the tow of Bristol has see some dramatic chages, from the additio to the historic Miot-Sleeper Library, reovatio of the historic Tow Hall, beautificatio of the dowtow core, ew shops ad busiesses, ad the walkig ad bicyclig paths curretly beig expaded, ours is a tow that has worked hard to improve the look ad quality of life. Now we have a opportuity to take advatage of the availability of a buildig that is perfectly situated to become the tow offices. Easily accessible with adequate parkig, the buildig is i good shape. May have toured the buildig ad the feedback has bee largely positive. The price is competitive ad the buildig ca be reovated to suit the eeds of the tow. However, the buildig was t desiged to be tow offices, there is o meetig space ad the rooms are desiged for medical purposes ot for the busiess of ruig a small tow. Now, we have the opportuity to create a space that works for our tow employees ad that fuctios well for the citizes ad the various elected officials who meet ad coduct their busiess i the tow offices. Over the years, may of us have visited the tow offices regularly to pay a water bill, register cars, discuss various questios with the tow admiistrator, tow clerk ad assessor. We ve atteded select board meetigs, ad occasioally tried to watch them o TV, where the recordigs are sometimes difficult to uderstad. We have visited the dugeo that is the police statio ad observed the shabby Morris seekig couty commissioer seat To the Editor: The race for Grafto Couty Commissioer may appear last o the ballot whe voters arrive at the polls o Tuesday Nov. 6. But make o mistake, that does't mea that it is ay less importat tha all the other choices voters will face. As a first time politicia, I am steppig up to the plate, ad doig somethig I ever imagied I would do - ru for office. I hope I will hit it out of the park. Why? Because these are ot ordiary times. We eed ew ideas ad differet perspectives o the dautig challeges we face - ot the least of which is fidig creative ad more effective strategies to deal with the devastatio of New Hampshire's metal health ad addictios crisis. Couty govermet, through the sheriff's departmet, couty attorey's office, alterative setecig programs ad recovery ad reetry programs at the correctioal facility, is at the frotlie of this crisis. We will all have to work together to begi to tur this aroud. But we ca do it. Treatmet works. Recovery is possible. But we eed to make it more readily available. I have 30 years of lived experiece helpig youg people achieve ad sustai recovery from substace misuse disorder ad metal illess. I believe we eed more voices of recovery at the decisio-makig table. More importatly, I New tow office buildig is eeded coditios i the buildig i geeral. Privacy is ot possible, there is o place to wait without beig i the way ad if I were a employee, I would struggle to deal with the lack of space for storage ad the lack of appropriate facilities to take a break or have luch. We caot ru our tow without cosiderig the ability of our taleted ad committed employees ad our dedicated ad geerous elected officials to do their jobs. The buildig we are cosiderig ca make their experieces ad ours more efficiet, effective ad pleasat. The cost of the proposed reovatios is cosiderable, but the curret buildig is i eed of sigificat repair ad is totally iadequate for its curret occupats. We believe that buyig ad reovatig the medical buildig makes it possible to attract ad brig advaced professioal traiig i comparative policy aalysis, egotiatio theory, ad mediatio ad coflict resolutio from Bosto Uiversity ad M.I.T. I 2014, vapig was selected as Oxford Dictioary s word of the year, beatig out other cadidates like Bae ad Budteder. If they were pickig a word today, it would more likely be JUUL or Juulig, the wildly popular stealth vape of adolescets. Juulig kids are vaporizig flavored e-juices with icotie, but what about vapig marijuaa? Accordig to Moitorig the Future, a aual survey of early 50,000 adolescets, three percet, eight percet ad 10 percet of eighth, 10th, ad 12th graders respectively had vaped marijuaa i Accordig to a study published by the America Academy of Pediatrics, e-cigarettes use may lead to marijuaa iitiatio. The authors hypothesize that e-cigarette use may be a marker of risk-takig behaviors, ad that e-cigarette users are more likely to smoke cigarettes ad drik alcohol, which are associated with marijuaa use. There is also the cocer that vapig icotie, which is i Juuls ad may other vapig devices, may pave the way to other substace use problems i the developig adolescet brai. Vapig refers to the ihalatio of a aerosol produced by heatig a liquid/oil or substace i a compact electroic portable vaporizer. While may youg vapers say they ihale flavored liquids like Gummy Bear, Germa Chocolate Cake ad Cotto Cady, youth ca vaporize marijuaa either the groud plat itself, waxes ofte referred to as dabs, or THC ad CBD oils. Marijuaa is used recreatioally ad medicially, so what s the big deal for adolescets ad youg adults? It turs out that the brai of a adolescet or youg adult is still growig, ad therefore o a missio to icrease efficiecy ad to develop critical skills related to problem-solvig, impulse cotrol, aticipatig cosequeces ad more. The house ca still fuctio if everythig is t up to code, but it wo t be ideal. Marijuaa use ca impact the wirig of the brai i a similar way, with the impact beig subtle i some cases ad more severe i others. Accordig to the CDC, marijuaa use may have log-lastig or permaet effects o the developig adolescet brai. Negative effects iclude difficulty with critical thikig skills like attetio, problem solvig ad memory; impaired reactio time ad coordiatio, especially as it relates to drivig; declie i school performace; icreased risk of metal health issues icludig depressio or axiety ad i some cases, psychosis where there is a family history of it; ad research also shows that about oe i six tees who repeatedly use marijuaa ca become addicted, as compared to oe i ie adults. It s really importat for parets ad caregivers to ote that these impacts of marijuaa differ from the impacts o a fully mature adult brai. Express your uderstadig of the risks, but also why a perso may wat to vape. Share why you do t wat him/her vapig, ad remember, it s importat to avoid scare tactics. Be hoest. Teach refusal skills. It s likely that your tee or youg adult will be itroduced to vapig marijuaa by a fried or older siblig. It helps to rehearse what he/she will say if that happes. Have your loved oe talk to other trusted adults who ca reiforce your message. Sometimes, messages comig from your pediatricia, school couselor, favorite aut or ucle, etc. ca be more impactful. It s doe woders for the cohesiveess of the group, said Susa Amburg, Director of the Whole Village Family Resource Ceter. You have a differet relatioship after you ve sat across the table from someoe. It s the culmiatio of a two-ad-a-half year project that ivolved early as may parters as the umber of solar paels istalled o the roof of the two buildigs. The result has bee a overall 80 percet reductio i aual electricity cosumptio. Sadra Joes, Director of PAREI ad de facto project maager, said the Whole Village project was guided by a simple matra: Reduce Before You Produce. Iitial efforts focused o improvig the eergy efficiecy of the buildigs by retrofittig idoor ad outdoor lightig with LED fixtures ad timers, istallig a ew cetral air coditioig uit, reducig stadby power loss, adjustig HVAC cotrols, ad educatig buildig occupats o behavioral chages that make more efficiet use of eergy. The ew array o the roof of the Whole Village buildig jois a 25 kw solar PV array at the Bridge House, which was oe of the project s first udertakigs. At Whole Village the combiatio of the occupat s eergy coservatio, the ew eergy efficiecy upgrades ad two moth old solar PV array, have resulted i a aual electricity cosumptio drop from 122,610 kilowatt-hours (kwh) to 47,537kWH i July of Ad oce the solar PV is o lie for a year we expect to see their electric load at Whole Village drop to 22,200kWH aually. That s a 82 percet drop, said Joes. The directors of both Whole Village ad Bridge House came to PAREI askig for ways to reduce their eergy ad their costs. We made it happe oe meetig, oe step ad oe buildig at a time. The majority of fudig for the project came from the geerosity of local ad statewide busiesses who purchased $321,875 i NH tax credits provided by the New Hampshire Commuity Developmet Fiace Authority (CDFA). Busiesses that doate to local projects that have received a CDFA busiess tax credit grat ca get at least 75 percet of that cotributio back i the form of a state busiess tax credit. A roster of local ad statewide busiesses stepped up to purchase the tax credits ad doate to the project. Also takig a lead role i the project was NHEC, which provided techical advice ad icetives totalig more tha $20,000. Late ights are worth it i the log ru I remember That magical October whe the Red Sox broke a 86- year curse is a time that will stick i my mid for a log time. As a lifelog fa, I had lived through other heartbreaks, icludig 1986 ad 2003, so it was especially sweet whe Keith Foulke sared that boucer back to the moud ad tossed it to Doug Mietkiewicz for the fial out of that magical seaso. The, of course, came 2007 ad the 2013 ad really, Red Sox fas have bee pretty spoiled over the last 15 years. People who were bor i 2000 have kow othig but success (give or take a few dow years) whe it comes to the Red Sox. They are traditioally oe of baseball s best teams ad this year they actually were the best team, wiig more tha 100 games ad settig a ew sigle seaso team wi record. As I ve stated i the past, baseball is my favorite sport ad the Red Sox are my favorite team. Because of my isae work schedule, I have ot had the chace SPORTING CHANCE By JOSHUA SPAULDING to watch too may games o televisio this seaso. If I m ot out coverig a game i the eveigs, I m probably at Brewster Academy, workig at my other job cleaig the floors i the kitche ad diig hall. It s ot tos of fu, but the good ews is they have a radio i the kitche ad I ca tur o the Sox games ad liste to the dulcet toes of Joe Castiglioe ad Tim Neverett as they call the game o WEEI, thaks to the sigal that comes through loud ad clear iside Estabrook Hall. That routie has ot chaged i the postseaso, though the games have bee startig later, which meas they take up most of the time that I m workig. That, i tur, cuts dow o the amout of time I ca liste to the podcasts that I subscribe to, so I have to fid more time to liste to those at other poits of the day. Game four of the ALDS was a grider for sure, ruig past 1 a.m. Thursday morig. If I start the job o time, I usually fiish at just about 1 a.m. So, as I walked through the kitche closig up, the fial iig was playig out. However, I could t pull myself away as Craig Kimbrel was doig his best to cough the game up. Thakfully, Adrew Beitedi was there to save the day, allowig me to go home ad get a couple of hours of sleep. Ad the ext ight, I was able to watch the fial few iigs i a much more comfortable locatio, my couch. Fially, have a great day Joe Collie. JOSHUA SPAULDING Madi Dalphose looks to drive the ball i actio agaist Co- Val i the Divisio III touramet. Champs elimiated i OT stuer Co-Val kocks off Newfoud field hockey BY JOSHUA SPAULDING Sports Editor BRISTOL The last time Kammi Williams coached i a field hockey playoff game, her topraked Newfoud field hockey team was defeated o its home field i the opeig roud of the playoffs. Needless to say, last Tuesday s Divisio III touramet opeer agaist Co-Val brought back a lot of memories. The Cougars scored less tha three miutes ito the seve-o-seve overtime period to take the 1-0 wi over the Bears, brigig Newfoud s seaso to a uexpected early ed. That s a tough loss, I thik we were a better team, but that s how field hockey works, Williams said. I did ot wat to relive this. That was a heartbreaker, she added. We outplayed them, we kept poudig them ad she (Co-Val goalie) stopped everythig. Co-Val came out of the gate with a couple of good chaces. Haah Eastma tured i a strog defesive stop for Newfoud ad Hayleigh Pabst made a ice save o a Cougar corer chace. The Cougars also set aother shot wide as they opeed the game strog. Newfoud got its first corer but could ot covert ad the Carolie Marchad ad Madiso Haley had bids i the zoe that were cleared away. Marchad also had a log drive i that missed its mark. The Cougars came back with a chace at the other ed but Pabst was there to kick the ball out of the way ad the Mackezie Bohlma ad Haley Dukette combied for a good defesive stop o a Co-Val corer. Lexi Douville set a strog drive up the field to Marchad but they could t get the ball i the et. The Bears had a corer chace ad Tiffay Doa set the ball through the circle ad Katy Drapeau made a move ito the circle but was tured away by the defese. The Cougars had their ow corer that missed its mark ad Haley came back up the field with a chace that was stopped, as did Doa. Newfoud got a series of four corers i a row as time was widig dow i the first half. Marchad had a shot o the first oe that was stopped ad after Haley had a ru i to the zoe after a steal, the ext two corers were cleared out by the defese. Marchad had a shot stopped o the fourth corer ad the just missed coectig with Hayes Broome o a crossig pass, sedig the game to halftime with o score o the board. Both teams had early chaces, with Doa ad Marchad teamig up for Newfoud s first bid ad the Co-Val s corer chace wet wide of the et. Doa also had a crossig pass cleared. Newfoud came back with a couple of corers. Drapeau ad Marchad got i close o the first oe but were deied by the keeper. O the secod oe, Haley, Broome ad Marchad got i close, oly to see the Co-Val keeper shut thigs dow. Doa had a great bid to the top of the cage that the keeper reached up ad swatted out of the air. Dukette, Marchad ad Madi Dalphose all had bids i close but could ot covert. Co-Val came back with four corers i a spa, with Pabst makig a ice save o oe of those bids ad aother goig wide. Broome, Haley ad Marchad combied for aother chace that was deied. The Bears cotiued to pressure, gettig three more corers before the clock ticked dow to the ed, as Marchad ad Doa had good chaces but the Cougars tighteed up the defese ad the game wet to the ed of regulatio with the game still scoreless. Newfoud had a corer early i the 15-miute seve-o-seve overtime period but Marchad s shot wet wide of the et. Co-Val was able to capitalize with 12:10 to go i the frame, puttig home a reboud after a iitial Pabst save to give the Cougars the 1-0 wi. Williams oted that it was importat for her youg team to lear from the loss ad ot dwell o it too much. We just had a breakdow i overtime, Williams said. We re really youg, so hopefully they ll lear from that. Whether you lose i the first roud or lose i the last roud, oly oe team wis the whole thig, the first-year head coach cotiued. We did a lot of good thigs this year. The Bears graduated most of their starters from last year s champioship team so this year s group was learig o the fly ad Williams was happy to see them fiish at Ad she praised the work of the Cougars. Co-Val is a wellcoached team, she said. Ad we just could t capitalize o the chaces we had. The Bears lose Drapeau, Dalphose ad Eastma to graduatio ext Jue.
