WEDNESDAY APRIL 14: CBMC BREAKFAST Come to the Kingsberry Restaurant in Mokena at 7:00 AM for breakfast with a wonderful group of men. Several of our members have been with this group for years for Wednesday morning prayer. See the flyer. SATURDAY APRIL 17: ROAD CLEAN UP Again this year, the knights do a civic duty by cleaning Wolf Road from 187th Street to St John s cemetery. We meet at 9 AM in the parking lot of St Mary Cemetery and form groups to walk along the road to pick up trash. It takes about an hour. Gloves, buckets, etc. are provided. Phone (708) SUNDAY APRIL 18: FAMILY MASS MASS Come to the 9 AM Mass with your family and be recognized as a Knight of Columbus. Fourth Degree Knights should be in regalia. Each family is asked to bring some items such as doughnuts, coffee cake, bagels with cream cheese, muffins, etc. for the social after Mass. See the article. TUESDAY APRIL 20: OFFICER MEETING At the Council Open House, Mokena VFW, see below TUESDAY APRIL 20: COUNCIL SOCIAL AND OPEN HOUSE. The council will host an open house at the Mokena VFW, S. Wolf Road, Mokena from 7 until 10 PM. Come join us, our families and prospective knights. See the article. SATURDAY APRIL 24: JOLIET CHAPTER HONORS NIGHT. This annual dinner is held to honor special knights nominated by their Grand Knights and selected by the Joliet Chapter for the Victor Cardozi Award. Our honoree this year is Gene Satrun come join your fellow nights and their ladies as we honor Gene. See the article and the form on the back page. (Note the April 16 deadline)

2 HELP FOR HAITI Brother knight Jim Naumczik owns Nancy s Pizza stores in Mokena, New Lenox and Bourbonnais. On Sunday March 7, Jim hosted a fund raising pizza party at his Mokena store to raise money for the earthquake victims in Port Au Prince. The fund raiser included a silent auction of donated items and a bake sale. Members of the Mokena Village Council supported the event and Mayor Joe Werner waited on tables. Jim s father is a gifted accordionist and entertainer who made the event more memorable. Several clowns teased the attendees. About 185 persons came to eat Jim s wonderful pizza and pasta. It was a really great event. Jim reported later that the net proceeds were over $ Congratulations and thank you to brother Jim Naumczik for his wonderful humanitarian gift to Haiti. Vivat Jesus COUNCIL SOCIAL. AND OPEN HOUSE In early April, the council will send several hundred letters to the fathers of St Mary School children, asking them to consider joining the Knights of Columbus. Mrs. Rozco, Principal of St Mary School has provided us with mailing labels for this purpose. The letters will invite the men and their families to come to a Knights of Columbus open house at the William Martin Post of the VFW on Wolf Road in Mokena on Tuesday April 20 from 7 until 10 PM. The open house will be a social event with members free to meet prospects and get to know them. There will be no formal speech making about the Knights of Columbus. We will have some food as well as an open bar with beer and pop. Wives and children are welcome and should come. Plan to have a good time and to meet some new friends. THE TOOTSIE REPORT The annual Tootsie Roll fund drive takes place in October with knights standing in the cold offering a tootsie roll in exchange for a donation. The council buys the tootsie rolls for about $600 and also buys needed supplies such as aprons and money cans. When the fund drive is over, a report is made to the Illinois State Council and a check for all of the net proceeds is also sent to the state. Last year s donations were over $6,000 with the council sending in a check for $5, after expenses. The state sends a form to the council that then allocates the money so that the Illinois State Council can issue a single check to each designated charity representing all the councils. The council has voted to distribute last year s money as follows: Lincoln Way Special Recreation: $ Lincoln Way Special Education: $ The Deaf Apostolate: $ Special Camps for Special Citizens: $ St Mary Reach Program: $ Vivat Jesus

CAMERON HARPER HERO HERO Cameron Harper, 12 year old son of brother knight Greg Harper and his wife Kathy, was honored

3 CAMERON HARPER HERO HERO Cameron Harper, 12 year old son of brother knight Greg Harper and his wife Kathy, was honored Tuesday night March 9 by being awarded the Civilian Lifesaving Award by the Mokena Fire Department. The Award has been awarded only a few times and was presented for Cameron s heroism in saving the life of a five year old boy in Tomah, Wisconsin on February 6. The boy was submerged in a motel pool, blue and no longer breathing. When the parents cried for help, Cameron responded and used the CPR skills he learned at St Mary School and at a Mokena Fire Department Course. He was able to restore breathing after several minutes of intense effort. When paramedics arrived at the hotel, the boy was returning to normal and Cameron was credited by the Tomah firefighters with saving the boy s life. Cameron s mother Kathy stated she and daughter Mary-Katherine prayed in the motel hallway while Cameron was working on the boy. Kathy and Cameron are now campaigning for more CPR training for all. We are proud of him and of the Harper family. FAMILY MASS Our last Family Mass was a great success. Sixty one people attended our fellowship after the Mass and ate a wonderful brunch.

Bring enough for your family and a little more so all can share without running out of the goodies. The council will still provide coffee, milk, juice, plates and utensils.

To make the event even nicer, the Family Mass has been changed into a potluck breakfast with those attending bringing items such as bagels with cream cheese, doughnuts, muffins, coffee cake, etc. Bring enough for your family and a little more so all can share without running out of the goodies. The council will still provide coffee, milk, juice, plates and utensils. Joe Sluis VICTOR CARDOZI Victor Cardozi was a highly respected State Deputy for Illinois. In his memory, the Joliet Diocesan Chapter of the Knights of Columbus gives out annual awards to men nominated by the Grand Knights of their councils and selected by the Chapter. The annual awards ceremony and dinner will be held this year on April 24 and one of the honored recipients will be our Gene Satrun. Gene has been a knight since 1975 and has been very active since then. He and his wife Barbara have three daughters. Come with us to the Council 382 Hall to honor Gene! 5 THE FRANKFORT TOWNSHIP FOOD PANTRY The Frankfort Township Food Pantry provides help to those in need. The pantry is supported by donations from Township residents and businesses. Customers are carefully screened to ensure that they live in the Township and truly need assistance. Maryfran Drymiller (picture above) does a superb job of running the facility. Customers schedule once per month shopping appointments and are given bags that they fill themselves. The number of bags provided depends on family size. In 2009, 1907 client visits resulted in 5721 bags of help out the door. You can bring donations directly to the pantry at the Frankfort Township Building on US 30. Only non-perishable food items and toiletries that are not out of date are acceptable. (See the list next page) By vote of the Council at the March meeting, Council 6993 will partner with the pantry to pay up to $100 per month from now on to buy currently needed groceries.
