1 April 2015 News for May, June, July Grand Knight Curt Baker's Message: It would be difficult to find anyone who does not have memories relating to Mother s Day. It is celebrated every year on the 2 nd Sunday of May. But Mother s Day has an interesting history. The earliest known history I could find was the annual spring festival celebrated by the Greeks dedicated to a maternal goddesses, and as a way to honor Rhea in Greek Mythology. The Ancient Romans, some 250 years before the birth of Christ, celebrated a festival in the spring to honor Cybele. For Christians, however, a celebration began in England on the fourth Sunday of Lent to honor the Virgin Mary, Mother of Christ. That celebration was known as Mothering Sunday, and was meant to honor All Mothers. In the United States, a day to honor Mothers was first suggested by Julia Ward Howe, writer of the Battle Hymn of the Republic. It was also intended to be dedicated to peace. Some years later, women s organizer Ann Reeves Jarvis began holding Mother s Day work clubs. These clubs tended many wounded soldiers from both sides during the US Civil War. Ann Jarvis had a daughter named Anna, who never had children of her own. But Anna wanted to honor her Mother and thank her for all she did, thus she organized Mother s Day (note the spelling, it is singular). Later, as the holiday caught on and became commercialized Anna began a failed attempt to end the celebration. The Holiday began to spread world-wide and is now celebrated in over 45 countries, mostly in May. As Catholics, our roots to celebrating Mother are found in our earliest prayers of Christ and the Angelic Salutations that are known to us as the Our Father and Hail Mary. It has been used by the Apostles, and continues with us today. The Rosary we pray now actually was given to the Church by Saint Dominic in the year Saint Dominic would pray this prayer before each sermon and would explain the Hail Mary word by word. In time it would fall out of favor but was revived by Blessed Alan de la Roche in the late 1400 s. It was known then as the Psalter of Jesus and Mary. Eventually, the prayer became known as the Rosary, which means crown of roses. So, it is fair to say that Catholics were celebrating a devotion to Mothers well before today s celebration was conceived. Regardless, this year when you gather in your homes, or when you pick up the phone, or mail that card all to honor your Mother please keep in your hearts your deepest thanks to your Mother for giving us life. And please pray for all Mothers that they will know the peace, joy and appreciation we all have for them for their many sacrifices for us. Vivat Jesus Curt Baker Grand Knight - Council 12664
