3 Grand Knights Report I hope and pray everyone has had a blessed and joyous Christmas and a great start to the New Year! It was a surprisingly wet Christmas. These were all important activities that the Knights are involved within our local community and our parish. And to all those who have been able to help out or chair events throughout this past year. By our next meeting on the 8th, the rotary lights will have been torn down (with help from our council), the nativity set put away for the year (happening on the 8th after 10:15am Mass), and our free-throw contest completed (thanks to Brian Clements for keeping this going). We have several upcoming events/ opportunities for you to get involved: Super Bowl Breakfast- Sunday, Feb 5th, I, your Grand Knight, am trying to do double duty with running the breakfast again this year. "Dick" Jacunski, Three princes were in love with a princess. the king said the prince who could win a made-up game would marry the princess. The rules were simple: the princes were to stand on boxes in different corners of a room while the princess was in the middle. They were not allowed to use ANYTHING and were not allowed to walk on the carpet. The game was won by touching the princess' hand. One of princes found out how to touch the princess' hand and married her. How did he do it? 7 Worthy Brother Knights: I pray that you all are having a wonderful Christmas Season and that the love of Christ in His incarnation may be permeating through all of your hearts. This semester has come to a close. It seems every year the years just fly by faster and faster. All of my finals are done and I am now enjoying my Christmas break. I am not done with Latin: thanks be to God!! That was by far my most difficult class. I really do enjoy the language, however, I did not like the professors teaching style. It is a subject that I have definitely learned the importance of. I also finished my catechism class. I have never had a class that I have enjoyed as much as I loved that class. We read the entire catechism and talked about the whole of the Catholic faith. I learned so much in that class. It is a class that I would love to offer to teach others in a parish if, God willing, I become a priest. It went above and beyond all of my faith formation that I had received previously. I also finished my ethics and Ancient Philosophy classes as well. It is quite amazing how much the Church influences ethics and how much it is influenced by the Ancient Philosophers Plato and Aristotle (St. Augustine was a Neo-Platonist and St. Thomas was an Aristotelian). Many of the Church dogmas are backed by these philosophies for the truth found in these philosophies is found in the Church. I had to write a 12 page final for my Ancient Philosophy class as well. It was one of the best classes that I took as well. I have been teaching 6th grade CCD at Nativity Parish in St. Paul. The children are crazy and amazing. I am amazed by the questions that are asked by the students and am puzzled by the amount of energy that they seem to always have. The other catechists are amazing as well. A few weeks ago, we were able to just sit down and talk to each other and I found that they have a wonderfully strong faith that they teach their children. During this break, I will be going on a trip throughout the diocese of La Crosse to all the Catholic High Schools giving talks on vocations to all the students. We leave on January 4th and return January 11th. It is a time where we can really bond as Diocesan Seminarians and to really help promote vocations for our diocese. It takes time and money for us to be able to do this and any support that we can get helps us to do this again and again. We would very much appreciate any support that you could give us. I thank you for all of your support. You are family to me and really help allow me to follow the call that God is asking me to peruse. I pray that you all have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!! iviva Cristo Ray! Jared Clements Seminarian for the Diocese of La Crosse P.S. Please pray for the repose of the soul of Suzy Meeham who died on Christmas day. Eternal rest grant unto them O Lord and May perpetual light shine upon them. And may the souls of the faithfully departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. TEACHER: Why are you late? STUDENT: Class started before I got here. TEACHER: John, why are you doing your math multiplication on the floor? JOHN: You told me to do it without using tables. TEACHER: Glenn, how do you spell 'crocodile?' GLENN: K-R-O-K-O-D-I-A-L' TEACHER: No, that's wrong. GLENN: Maybe it is wrong, but you asked me how I spell it. TEACHER: Donald, what is the chemical formula for water? DONALD: H I J K L M N O. TEACHER: What are you talking about? DONALD: Yesterday you said it's H to O. The Very First New Year. Who established January 1 as the start of the New Year? Julius Caesar declared January 1 the start of the new year when he established the Julian Calendar. January was named for Janus, the twofaced god who looked both ahead to the new year and back to the previous year. Beauty of Winter: God of creation, thank you for the beauty of winter- for snow, icy window panes, evergreen trees, warm coats, sledding, and hot cocoa. Let us enjoy Your creation in all its glory, this winter and always. Amen.

8 FAITHFUL FRIAR S REPORT Sir Knights, It is hard to believe the new year 2017 is upon us, what really happened to last year?? How well did we do with our resolutions? Instead of making up new ones might I suggest to continue to work on what our Holy Father suggested for 2016.: 1. Take care of your Spiritual life, your relationship with God 2. Take care of your family, give them your time, attention and love. 3. Take care of your relationship with others, transform your faith into life. 4. Be careful how you speak, purify your tongue of offensive and abusive words. 5. Heal wounds of the heart with the oil of forgiveness. 6. Look after your work, doing it with enthusiasm, competence, humility and passion, with a spirit that knows how to thank the Lord. 7. Be careful of envy, lust, hatred and negative feelings. 8. Watch out for anger that leads to vengeance, laziness, pointing the fingers at others which leads to pride, and complaining continually which leads to desperation. 9. Take care of our brother and sisters who are weaker, the sick, the elderly, the poor, homeless, the stranger, for we will be judged on this. Happy May God's blessings be upon you. SK Msgr Steven Kachel Riddle me this : A man drove to a hotel and as soon as he got there he was bankrupt. Explain. Solution: The man was playing Monopoly and when he rolled the dice he landed on a property he could not afford to pay the rent on. FAITHFUL NAVIGATOR S REPORT. Happy New Year fellow Sir Knights: The dinner with Cardinal Burke went very well, I'm sorry about the mike not working, every event always has a detail that gets overlooked, in this case it was the fact the mike and unit was there but no one could get it to work. I have talked to people at the Shrine about it and they will make sure this wili not happen again. I would really like to hear some input about holding a social at the Shrine every now and then, I do know we would need at least 30 people to hold something there and get a limited menu to choose from. Just me or give me a call. (rlepschahoo.com) ( ). Take time to pray for a peaceful transition of power that will happen this month. On January 22 we mark the 44th year of one of the worst rulings of the Supreme Court of United States. I would encourage you to take some time to watch some of the events that EWTN will broadcast that day. I usually like to watch the Mass from the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception. it is a very moving service. I went one year to the march in DC and was impressed by the number of young people that were there, and being part of something that is very meaningful, I felt the movement would always be in good hands with these up and coming adults. There is a video called The Spark of Life and can be found by just typing it in a search bar. It is something that will give you some pause to think, and reflect about the miracle of life. Have you gotten your Annual Fraternal Survey in? If not, now is the time. Upcoming meetings: January 19 meeting at St Pats, February 16 meeting at St Pats. Take care and enjoy the winter season, spring is not that far way. Kind Regards; Richard Lepsch, FN DISTRICT DEPUTY S REPORT. Sir Knights...hopefully you have received a request for your Annual Report of Fraternal Activity...Please complete the report and return to me no later than January 10, Thanks & Happy New Year..Bill Jaekel p.s. Assembly dues are due. God loves everyone, but probably prefers "fruits of the spirit" over "religious nuts!"

9 Named Catholic of the Year: Carl Anderson Supreme Knight advocates for Middle East Christians. By Michelle Martin In order to gain awareness and help for Christians whose presence has diminished from the Middle East at an astounding rate, Carl Anderson, Supreme Knight of the Knights of Columbus, has expanded the charitable efforts of the world's largest Catholic fraternal organization. "Our interest in the issue of genocide comes from our humanitarian concern for those suffering people and for their spiritual and physical wellbeing," Anderson said in a March 10 statement at the National Press CIub. The comments followed the release of a nearly 300-page report compiled by the Knights of Columbus and an organization named In Defense of Christians, which called on the U.S. Department of State to designate the activities of ISIS against Christians and other ethnic and religious minorities as a genocide. The Christian population of Iraq is estimated to have dropped by 80 percent from the more than 1.4 million who lived there before the U.S. invasion in In Syria, the Christian population has dropped from an estimated 1.25 million in 2011 to less than 500,000 this year, according to ADF International. Many of the Christians remaining in those countries have been forced from their homes to other regions. The report documents murders, torture, kidnapping, rape and mass deportation of Christians and others carried out by members of the Islamic State in Iraq, Syria and Libya. That designation of genocide made by Secretary of State John Kerry on March 17 was the first such U.S. declaration since Sudanese actions in Darfur in It allows the possibility of but does not require greater resources for the genocide victims. Under Anderson's leadership, the Knights of Columbus have raised more than $11 million since 2014 to aid refugees in the Middle East, both those internally displaced and those who have fled to neighboring countries. Anderson personally has testified about the plight of Christians in the Middle East in front of a congressional subcommittee. Anderson, 65, has a history of public service, working at the White House under Ronald Reagan and then as a member of the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights. But it is for his work on behalf of persecuted Christians and other religious minorities in the Middle East that he has been honored as a 2016 Catholic of the Year. NEW DEPUTY SUPREME KNIGHT APPOINTED 12/16/2016 Patrick E. Kelly, a Past State Deputy of the District of Columbia, was appointed Deputy Supreme Knight by the Knights of Columbus Board of Directors on December 13. A Knight for 33 years, Kelly became the Order s Vice President for Public Policy in 2006 and since 2011 has also served as Executive Director of the Saint John Paul II National Shrine in Washington, D.C. He was elected to the Order s Board of Directors in Earlier this year, he retired with the rank of Captain from the U.S. Navy Judge Advocate General s (JAG) Corps Reserve, where he specialized in international and operational law and served as the Commanding Officer of the international law unit at the United States Naval War College. Previously, Kelly had a long career of public service that included advisory roles to Congress and the Department of Justice. Kelly also served as Senior Advisor to the Ambassadorat-Large for International Religious Freedom at the State Department. His responsibilities included serving as the Department s principal interlocutor with the Holy See and other nations on religious freedom issues. He succeeds Logan T. Ludwig, who is retiring at age 70 after serving as Deputy Supreme Knight since Ludwig served previously for two years as Supreme Treasurer and has been a member of the Board of Directors since Kelly has served as the first Executive Director of the Saint John Paul II National Shrine, which is adjacent to The Catholic University of America. He has overseen the renewal of that facility, previously known as the Pope John Paul II Cultural Center, which was purchased by the Supreme Council in During his tenure, the Shrine has developed a world-class permanent exhibit, called A Gift of Love: The Life of Saint John Paul II, and created two new worship spaces that feature the mosaic artwork of Jesuit Father Marko Rupnik the Redemptor Hominis Church and the Luminous Mysteries Chapel, which enshrines a first- class blood relic of St. John Paul II. As Deputy Supreme Knight, Kelly will continue to oversee the Shrine s operations. He holds a law degree from Marquette University Law School and a master s in theology from the Pontifical John Paul II Institute for Studies on Marriage and Family at The Catholic University of America. He and his wife, Vanessa, have three young daughters. Never, under any circumstances, take a sleeping pill and a laxative on the same night. - Dave Barry IN MEMORY OF WILLIAM and EMMA DVORACEK Gary Dvoracek MONSIGNOR DELBERT J.
