Finally, Labor Day is approaching on September 5th. This celebration was the creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the countless and substantial achievements of American workers. It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country. As such, please think about the true meaning of this holiday, and not as a day the banks and post office will be closed. As always, please take time for yourself and family, aid where possible those less fortunate, and pray for those in need. Vivat Jesus, Steve Gentz Grand Knight, Council 11672

5 P a ge 5 SHORT STORY CORNER Submitted by Mike Rose The Chest An elderly gentleman and his wife had been married for more than 60 years. They had shared everything. They had talked about everything. They had kept no secrets from each other, except that the little old woman had a locked chest on top of her closet that she had cautioned her husband never to open or ask her about. For all of these years, he had never thought about the chest, but one day the little old woman got very sick and the doctor said she would not recover. In trying to sort out their affairs, the little old man took down the chest and took it to his wife's bedside. She agreed that it was time that he should know what was in the chest. When he opened it, he found two crocheted dolls and a stack of money that came out to about $95,000. He asked her about the contents. She replied: When we were to be married, my grandmother told me the secret of a happy marriage was to never argue. She told me that if I ever got angry with you, I should just keep quiet and crochet a doll. The little old man was so moved; he had to fight back tears. Only two precious dolls were in the chest. She had only been angry with him two times in all those years of living and loving. He almost burst with happiness. Honey, he said. That explains the doll, but what about all of this money? Where did it come from? Oh! She said. That's the money I made from selling the other dolls. Lord Jesus, once you spoke to men Upon the mountain, in the plain; O help us listen now, as then, And wonder at your word again. We all have secret fears to face, Our minds and motives to amend; We seek your truth, we need your grace, Our living Lord and present Friend. The Gospel speaks, and we receive Your light, your love, your own command. O help us live what we believe In daily work of heart and hand. Our Lady of Sorrows By Tradition, the Catholic Church dedicates the month of September to Our Lady of Sorrows. The Memorial of Our Lady of sorrows takes place on September 15, the day after the Feast of the Triumph of the Cross. We remember the suffering of Mary as she stood at the foot of the Cross and witnessed the torture and death of her Son. We are also reminded of Simeon s words to Mary (Luke2:34-35) at the Presentation of the Lord - that a sword would pierce her soul. Prayer to the Queen of Martyrs Mary, most holy virgin and Queen of Martyrs, accept the sincere homage of my filial affection. Into thy heart, pierced by so many swords, do thou welcome my poor soul. Receive it as the companion of thy sorrows at the foot of the cross, on which Jesus died for the redemption of the world. With thee, O sorrowful Virgin, I will gladly suffer all the trials, contradictions, and infirmities which it shall please our Lord to send me. I offer them all to thee in memory of thy sorrows, so that every thought of my mind, and every beat of my heart may be an act of compassion and of love for thee. And do thou, sweet Mother, have pity on me, reconcile me to thy divine Son Jesus, keep me in His grace, and assist me in my last agony, so that I may be able to meet thee in heaven and sing thy glories. Amen.

6 P a ge 6 1. Who was Victoria Woodhull? Most American women didn t win the right to vote until the ratification of the 19th amendment in 1920, but the first female candidate for president came nearly 50 years earlier. In 1872, Ohio native Victoria Woodhull made history when she ran as the Equal Rights Party candidate against incumbent President Ulysses S. Grant. Her platform included such progressive reforms as an eight-hour workday, women s suffrage and an end to the death penalty, and she rounded out the groundbreaking ticket by selecting abolitionist Frederick Douglass as her running mate (though apparently without his permission). Woodhull was something of a pioneer even before she launched her bid to shatter the political glass ceiling. She d spoken before Congress regarding equal voting rights, and had opened the first woman-owned brokerage firm on Wall Street. Woodhull failed to score any electoral votes on Election Day, and there s no record of how she fared in the popular vote. Even if she had won, she would have been barred from taking up residence in the White House though not because of her gender. The Constitution requires that presidents be at least 35 years old upon their inauguration. Woodhull would have been just 34. Information provide by the History Channel Website 2. Prior to 2016, how many women have run for President? QUESTIONS OF THE MIND Submitted by Mike Rose July Questions and Answers: In the years since Woodhull s trailblazing campaign, dozens of other women have made bids for the presidency. Despite not being able to vote for herself, suffragette Belva Ann Lockwood garnered 4,149 votes in Maine Senator Margaret Chase Smith later won 227,007 votes in the 1964 Republican primary, but fell short of the getting the nomination. Eight years later, Congresswoman Shirley Chisolm was the first woman and the first African American to seek the Democratic nomination. Lenora Fulani became the first woman to get on the ballot in all 50 states when she ran as a third party candidate in 1988, and Hillary Clinton later achieved the best ever showing by a woman in a primary in To date, the most successful female candidate in the general election is the Green Party s Jill Stein, who netted over 450,000 votes in Who was the first sitting U. S. President to fly in an airplane. The first sitting U. S. President to fly in an airplane was Franklin D. Roosevelt. He flew from Miami, Florida to Casablanca in 1943 for a conference with Winston Churchill. 4. When was the airplane the sitting President was flying in designated as Air Force One? The "Air Force One" call sign was created after a 1953 incident during which a Lockheed Constellation named Columbine II carrying President Dwight D. Eisenhower entered the same airspace as a commercial airline flight using the same call sign. 5. Is the designation, Air Force One, assigned to a particular aircraft? No! Any aircraft that is carrying the sitting U. S. President has the designation Air Force One. 6. Who was the first Speaker of the U. S House of Representatives? It was Frederick August Conrad Muhlenberg from the State of Pennsylvania. He was elected April 1, 1789 (First Congress) and again in December 2, 1793 (Third Congress). 7. What is the numeric designation of the current Congress? It is the 114th Congress. Congress numeric designations are based on the election of the first two years of the first elected member of the House of Representatives in 1788, which took office in March 4, The First Congress adjourned March 4, 1791, when the Second Congress convened. 8. Who is the President of the Senate? Article Two, Section One of the Constitution states the Vice-President is the President of the Senate, but can only vote on any measure when there is a tie vote. 9. Where does the Vice- President reside while in office? The Vice-President resides at Number One Observatory Circle. The house is located on the northeast grounds of the U. S. Naval Observatory, Washington, D.C. The house was built in 1893 for the superintendent of the Observatory. In 1923, the Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) liked the house so much that he took over the house for himself. It remained the residence of the CNO until 1974, when Congress made the house the temporary official residence for the Vice- President. According to law the house is still the "official temporary residence of the Vice President of the United States." The 1974 congressional authorization covered the cost of refurbishment and furnishing the house. Before that time, the Vice President lived in his own home. 10. Who was the first Vice-President to live at current Vice-Presidential residence? The first Vice-President to use Number One Observatory Circle was Nelson Rockefeller. He primarily used it for entertaining as he had a well secured home in Washington, D.C. The first Vice-President to reside at Number One Observatory Circle full time was Walter Mondale.

Veteran suicide awareness is an important topic. Toward that, please see the attached flyer on page 11 concerning this event on October 22 at 9:30 AM at the Veterans Memorial Park. Registration can be made at: The entry fee and donation will benefit the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, Huntsville- Madison County Veterans Memorial, and Bearded Warriors. On average, 22 times a day, once every 65 minutes someone hears that voice telling them that killing themselves is the only way out. The purpose of our event is to bring awareness to all of the Veterans that are struggling to get up every morning and face another day. We want to bring awareness to the soldiers that think there is no hope, no reason to leave the house, and no reason to make friends. We need them to understand that there are people that want to help, there are people that will talk to them, there is someone else out there that is going through, or has gone through what they are feeling. Please consider supporting this important effort and participating in this event if you can. Council is holding a fish fry fund raiser for the Diocese of Birmingham vocations September 30. It will be held in the Parish hall from 5:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. The cost is $12.50 for adult and $6:00 for individuals under 21 years of age.
