On the near term, the audit of our Council financial records by the Trustees was successfully completed without issue on July 21. In addition, I attended the Alabama State Council Knights of Columbus Organizational Meeting in Prattville, AL on July 25. The half-day meeting provided valuable information on organizational and membership strategies, and upcoming state and national activities. On July 28, our Council officer installation ceremony was conducted by our District Deputy. Finally, our experienced First Degree Exemplification Team conducted a ceremony on July 30 at Our Lady Queen of the Universe Catholic Church. This exemplification was to assisted the State s newest Council with the indoctrination of their members. Concerning Council activities, the Fraternal Year Budget was provided to you on July 20 for review and comment. The final version of this budget will be considered at our August 3 Council Business Meeting. Leaders are still sought for a number of important Council committee teams. Our Deputy Grand Knight, Mike Weist, is acting as the Program Director and our Chancellor, Tom Geoffroy, is acting as the Membership Director. Please contact these gentlemen to determine how you can assist the Council. Farther out on the Council calendar are the Tootsie Roll Donation Event as part of the Campaign for Citizens with Intellectual Disabilities, and the Council s 20 th Anniversary. The Tootsie Roll Donation event will occur the weekends of October 2 and 9 at Kroger and Walmart, and the weekend of November 21 following Mass. The Council s 20 th anniversary is on November 6 with a celebration planned on Saturday, November 7 in conjunction with the 5:30 PM Mass. 3 P a ge 3 MEMBER RECOGNITION & NEWS of INTEREST Knight of the Month Family of the Month The Knight of the Month for July 2015 is Andy Carlson. Andy is our youngest/ most active Council member. You have probably seen him at one of our monthly breakfast fundraisers, where he regularly volunteers. Andy consistently embodies the charity, unity, fraternity, and patriotism tenets of the Knights of Columbus through his Council efforts and his audio/visual volunteer work with area amateur plays and musicals. After completing a number of prerequisite courses at local universities, Andy is heading to Auburn University for the Fall semester to continue his educational experience. Please thank Andy for the efforts and wish him good luck with his college career. The Knight of Columbus family of the month for July 2015 is the Terry Carlson family. Terry and his family have consistently served the Council, the Parish, and the greater community since joining the Knights of Columbus in December Terry and his family, including most recently a foreign exchange student from Germany, have been consistent participants in a number of charity activities including our monthly breakfast fundraisers and the annual Intellectual Disabilities Tootsie Roll Campaign. Terry and his family epitomizes the values central to the Knights of Columbus and serves as an example in supporting the needs of others while caring for the safety of his family. Think About It... The nicest thing about the future is that it always starts tomorrow. Money will buy a fine dog, but only kindness will make him wag his tail. If you don't have a sense of humor, you probably don't have any sense at all. Seat belts are not as confining as wheelchairs. No one ever says "It's only a game" when their team is winning

4 P a ge 4 PROGRAMS, ACTIVITIES & NEWS of INTEREST Monthly Parish Breakfast The following is a summary of our 2015 breakfast activity January through July: Yearly Profit to Date $ 1,812 Number Meals Served 871 Avg. Profit per Breakfast $259 Avg. Meals Served per Month 124 KC Breakfast Workers Council Meeting Can Drive for the Good Shepherd Pantry Don t forget those canned goods. Each Knight is asked to bring just one canned good, or non-perishable foodstuff or money (equivalent to one can) to the monthly Council business meeting. The Supreme Council gives a donation of $100 for each 1,000 pounds of food collected. The Shepherd s Watch can be downloaded or read on the Council s website: WWII 70th Anniversary Ceremony in Huntsville The ceremony is at the Space and Rocket center on August 10th. Members who are veterans should register at the web site listed on the lower portion of the flyer on page 10. Registration will assist in accounting for the Veteran and getting the proper number of seats. Lunch will be provided and medical personnel will be on site. Council Shirts and Hats Contact Michael Weist for information about shirts and hats at mweist63@gmail.com. At each business and officers meeting, hats and shirts can be purchased and ordered. Note: Brother Weist also is able to order 4 th Degree shirts and hats. J.C. Bradley Memorial Dinner Dance by St. Patrick Council in Bessemer, AL on August 22 The Saint Patrick Council is sponsoring a dinner dance and is inviting other councils to participate. Anyone interested see the ad on page 11.

5 P a ge 5 COUNCIL ACTIVITIES & NEWS of INTEREST In Honor of the Immaculate Heart By Tradition, the Catholic Church dedicates the month of August to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. The Immaculate Heart is often venerated together with the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Just as the Sacred Heart represents Christ's love for mankind, the Immaculate Heart represents the Blessed Virgin's desire to lead all people to Christ. This Novena to the Immaculate Heart of Mary is particularly appropriate to pray in this month but can, however, be prayed at any time of the year, when you have a special favor to ask of the Blessed Virgin. Novena to the Immaculate Heart of Mary Immaculate Heart of Mary, full of love for God and mankind, and of compassion for sinners, I consecrate myself entirely to you. I entrust to you the salvation of my soul. May my heart be ever united with yours, so that I may hate sin, love God and my neighbor, and reach eternal life together with those whom I love. Mediatrix of all Graces and Mother of Mercy, remember the infinite treasure which your Divine Son has merited by His suffering and which He has confided to you for us, your children. Filled with confidence in your motherly heart, and for the sake of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, obtain for me the favor I ask: [Mention your request here]. Dearest mother, if what I ask for should not be according to God's will, pray that I may receive that which will be of greater benefit to my soul. May I experience the kindness of your intercession with Jesus during life and at the hour of my death? Amen.

6 P a ge 6 SHORT STORY CORNER QUESTIONS OF THE MIND Submitted by Mike Rose Lunch with God By Anonymous In a small town in the Mid-West there were two individuals that lived on opposite sides of a large city park. One was a young lady of 10 years of age and the other was an older gentleman of 90 years of age. After they were finished with their lunches and had sat on the park bench for a while they both stood up waved at each other, and started off toward home. Neither of them had uttered a single word or sound to each other. They both lived with family. The young lady lived with her parents, and the older gentleman lived with his daughter, her husband and grandchildren. The young lady wanted to go to the movie with her friends, but she had not been doing her schoolwork and was restricted until such time as she caught up on all of her schoolwork. She got very mad grabbed a bag of cookies and several drinks, placed them in her backpack, and ran out of the house to the park. The older gentleman felt he was being treated like a child, as his family did not want him to leave the house unless he was with a family member. He made two sandwiches and placed them and some fruit in a bag. Quietly he left the house and went to the park. Both of these individuals were mad at their families. In a very short time they found themselves sitting at opposite ends of a park bench from each other. Both sat in silence and had scrunched up faces. The older gentleman looked at the young lady and offered her a sandwich. She gladly took and in turn offered him a drink, and he like wise took the drink. They sat in silence and ate the sandwiches and drank the drinks. As time went on cookies were exchanged with fruit. They must have sat on that bench for almost two hours eating and drinking, but never saying a word or uttering a sound. Both of them felt better toward the world and their families. They both left with smiles on their faces and had a feeling of being happy with the world. When the young lady returned home, her mother was waiting for her and very upset, having looked for her and not finding her. The mother asked where she had been. She simply said I went to the park and had lunch with God. She looked at her mother and said, You know Mom, God is a lot older than I imagined. She smiled at her Mom, turned around and went up stairs to begin working on her schoolwork to her mother s surprise. When the older gentleman finally returned home, his daughter and her family were also upset, as they had been looking for him. The daughter asked where her father had been. He simply said I went to the park and had lunch with God. He looked at his daughter, her husband, and grandchildren and said, You know, God is a lot younger than I thought she would be. He then announced that he would make sure that they all knew where he was from now on, and he went into the backyard. His family noted his happy demeanor and was flabbergasted. Kindness comes in many forms. Sometimes it is simply letting people know where you are and understanding they want to know because they care about you. Sometimes it is doing what you are suppose to do, without someone who cares standing over you making sure you do it. What is the date that the Continental Congress approved the resolution to declare independence from Great Britain? July 2, On the date the resolution was approved, how many colonies voted for independence. Eleven as the New York delegates did not have instructions from the New York Colonial Legislature. The New York delegation was ordered to vote for independence on July 9, 1776, thus making it unanimous. 3. What is the date of the final or approved form of the Declaration of Independence? July 4, It should be noted that the Declaration of Independence was not voted on, it was published, based on the July 2, 1776 vote for independence from Britain. 4. Who was Charles Thomson? Charles Thomson was the Secretary of the Continental Congress throughout its existence, which ran from 1774 to He directed Timothy Matlack his duties to the Continental Congress. 5. Who was Timothy Matlack? Timothy Matlack held a variety of political offices during the Revolutionary era, including storekeeper of military supplies, delegate to the Pennsylvania Constitutional Convention, and member of the state Council of Safety. He even fought in several battles against the British. As clerk to the secretary of the Second Continental Congress, Mr. Matlack penned the official version of the Declaration of Independence on display in the National Archives. 6. Who was Mary Goddard? She was publisher and printer of a revolutionary journal called "The Maryland Journal" from 1774 to From a historical point of view what is significant about the official prints of the Declaration of Independence that were printed in Baltimore in January 1777? Ms. Goddard published the second printing of the Declaration of independence, which for the first time included the signatures. 8. Who was Thomas McKean? Mr. Thomas Mckean is one of the few individuals that signed both the Declaration of Independence and the Article of Confederation. 9. What did Richard Henry Lee do on June 7, 1776? Mr. Richard Henry Lee, at the direction of the Virginia Convention, was ordered to submit a resolution calling for independence from Britain. It referred to the Lee Resolution as he submitted the following on June 7, 1776: Resolved, That these United Colonies are, and of right ought to be, free and independent States, that they are absolved from all allegiance to the British Crown, and that all political connection between them and the State of Great Britain is, and ought to be, totally dissolved. That it is expedient forthwith to take the most effectual measures for forming foreign Alliances. That a plan of confederation be prepared and transmitted to the respective Colonies for their consideration and approbation. 10. When was the Declaration of Independence signed? Well there is a disagreement amongst historians. It is believe that the text of the Declaration of independence was approved on July 4, The Secret Journals (the journal of the Continental Congress) contained two previously unpublished entries about the Declaration. The entry for July 19 reads: Resolved That the Declaration passed on the 4th be fairly engrossed on parchment with the title and stile of "The unanimous declaration of the thirteen united states of America" & that the same when engrossed be signed by every member of Congress. The entry for August 2 stated: The declaration of Independence being engrossed [legal or final form] and compared at the table was signed by the Members. Some signers were not in Philadelphia on July 4, 1776, so they could not have signed it on July 4,1776. There is evidence that some members did not sign it until August 2, 1776 or later. The Dunlap Printer version printed on July 5, 1776 for distribution to the British colonies did not have signatures.
