I have noticed nothing but kindness in all the individuals I have come across since my travels began when I left my house at the beginning of the year. On Saturday, January 10 I rode with a brother Knight to Prattville, Alabama to the State K of C meeting. During the meeting I observed speakers speak of help for grieving parents that have lost a child or the help that has been accomplished to improve life in various communities across Alabama. Since I did not drive I offered the mileage reimbursement to the brother that drove. He refused so we decided to place it in the Knights-In-Need Fund. These were just some of the nice and kind things I observed that Saturday. Sunday the observations continued with the kindness given to the several elderly members of our Parish. A gentleman, at our K of C breakfast, about 70 years of age, stopped to carry on a 5- minute conversation with a four year old about the young man s Captain America shoes that lit up when the little fellow walked. I saw two meals given freely at the K of C breakfast and packaged up and handed to a women to carry them to a couple in their late 80 s that still live at home but have no living relatives. As I moved through our town I had conversations with people that are preparing to go to Haiti and Uganda to help make that part of the world a little better. I heard joy in a friend s wife s voice and face when she told me that her husband who had been near death is recovering and will eventually be able to come home. I guess what I am saying is that I believe that there is more goodness in this world than evil. The problem is that smiles, kindness, help, hard work, charity do not make the forefront of our news media. That is one reason that I personally enjoy reading The One Voice and the Columbia Magazine. They have nothing but positive information and tell of how Knights, schools, and Parishes, are working hard to improve their respective communities. Even events that depict fun and festive occasions show how good life can be. Even when these two publications provide information about a serious issue, the focus is on what is being done positively to improve or reduce the effects of the negative issue. I truly believe that just like all the good people I have come across here in Alabama since January 10, people of like kindness are to be found in every place you can go in this world. I have faith that the good Lord shall soften the hearts of those bent on violence and the violence will eventually disappear into history. As for me, I am looking forward to additional conversations about shoes that light up when a little one walks and more words about kindness. Please remember to bring a non-perishable food item to K of C meets and events. Also remember that we need all the help we can get to work the Lenten Fish Fries. May the joys and blessing that Lenten Season can bring you and your families be upon you and may the Good Lord keep you always. Vivat Jesus, Mike Grand Knight

6 P a ge 6 SHORT STORY CORNER Submitted by the Grand Knight Higher Authority As told by Kevin O Brien The Pope is visiting New York City. He was picked up by a driver, Harold, at the airport and was heading toward the Vatican s counselor house when they came into a huge traffic jam. After awhile the Pope says to his driver, "Harold, why don t you let me drive, as I am very familiar with traffic jams having lived in Rome". Harold hesitates, but he relents, and says ok and exchanges seats with the Pope. The Pope tells him to enjoy the refreshments out of the refrigerator, if he so wants. As Harold was just about to enjoy a sandwich and a drink the vehicle lunges forward and Harold drops the sandwich and drink and checks his seat belt. The Pope moves the vehicle off the street on to the sidewalk and begins to make a bunch of progress toward the Vatican s counselor house. People and animals are clearing off the sidewalk in a great hurry. About that time, a police officer named Sergeant O Brien sees the vehicle and sets out after it on his motorcycle with his siren blaring. The Pope stops the vehicle in response to the siren. Sergeant O Brien walks up to the vehicle s driver side window and the Pope rolls it down. Sergeant O Brien looks into the vehicle s window and sees the Pope. He tell the Pope, "your holiness, please don t go anywhere and don t move the vehicle", and his Holiness says he won t. Sergeant O Brien walks back to his motorcycle and calls his Lieutenant and tells him he just stopped a vehicle. The Lieutenant says, Oh no O Brien you haven t stopped the Mayor again. Sergeant O Brien says to him, no higher. The Lieutenant says, not the Governor this time. Sergeant O Brien says, no higher, and the Lieutenant groans and says, not the President. Sergeant O Brien tells the Lieutenant, no but higher. The Lieutenant says, How can anyone be higher. Sergeant O Brien says, I don t know, but the Pope is his driver. The Blessed Sacrament By Tradition, the Catholic Church dedicates the month of April to the Blessed Sacrament. One thing that sets Catholics apart from other Christians who believe in the Real Presence (that the bread and wine truly become the Body and Blood of Christ) is that we don't believe that the Real Presence ends when the Sacrament of Holy Communion is complete. Frequent prayer before the Blessed Sacrament, reserved in the tabernacle is a great path to spiritual growth. In this Act of Adoration, we thank Christ for His continued presence among us, not just through His grace but physically, in the Holy Eucharist. His Body is the Bread of Angels, offered for our strength and salvation. Act of Adoration I adore Thee, O Jesus, true God and true Man, here present in the Holy Eucharist, humbly kneeling before Thee and united in spirit with all the faithful on earth and all the blessed in heaven. In deepest gratitude for so great a blessing, I love Thee my Jesus with my whole heart, for Thou are all perfect and all worthy of love. Give me grace nevermore in any way to offend Thee and grant that I, being refreshed by Thy Eucharistic presence here on earth. Amen.

7 P a ge 7 QUESTIONS OF THE MIND from the Grand Knight February s Questions and Answers: 1. What is the name of the first known European thought to have been born in North America?
