1 A Message from our Grand Knight: Greetings Brother Knights and friends, Happy Columbus Day. I know that comes with a lot of politically correct baggage these days but it is a seminal moment in the development of Western Civilization. Yes there were people here already when Columbus arrived and other Europeans arrived before him. It was Columbus s voyage and the resulting age of discovery, however, that altered history. It started humanity on the road to a nation where people have the freedom to determine their own destiny and not have it dictated to them by what class they were born into. Some detractors would call Columbus lucky and I am okay with that. I always told my boys lucky is the intersection of preparation and opportunity. Thinking about our Order s namesake got me to thinking about the Order s new rallying call, Faith in Action. Rightly or wrongly, Columbus had a vision and his faith in that vision drove him to action in pursuit of that vision. I ask all of you to let our guiding principles of Charity, Unity, Fraternity and Patriotism inspire you to put your faith in action. There are numerous opportunities up coming. (Continued on page 2) Knight of the Month: Knight of the Month is Jon Sullivan. When the Laird Corporation shut down its Lincoln office, Jon coordinated the donation of all of the office furniture to local nonprofits. He made sure St Teresa's School got a couple of truck loads of office furniture. Thanks Jon! Knight Family of the Month: The Family of the Month is the Brad & Karrie Seeman Family. They volunteered and took several girls to the Marian Mass last week. 2 (Continued from page 1) During the weekend of October 13th and 14th, we will be at Hy-Vee on 50th and O for our annual Tootsie Roll Drive for the intellectually disabled. We need 6 people per 2hr shift each day. Please pick up a 2 hour shift to help the council raise money for the Villa Marie School. There is a signup genius list to see what shifts are needed. Just go to and search for Fitzgerald Council. Soon it will be time to winterize the church grounds and set up the Nativity displays at the church and council hall. The Nativity set-up occurs the Saturday of the Thanksgiving weekend. It is a great fellowship time with plenty of coffee and donuts. With lots of help, we are usually done in under 2 hours. As we roll into winter, we will need help shoveling driveways for the elderly. Ron Schinkel is your point of contact if you would like to help. Before you know it, Lent will be here and we will need lots of help with the fish fry s. There are a lot of different jobs and not all of them are on Fridays if that doesn t work for you. There are opportunities to help every day of the week during Lent. Please see Alex Cordry or Dan Weslowski for more information. Our church provides plenty of opportunities as well. Will Varicak is always looking for ushers to serve at all Masses. I urge all of you to look for some way to serve. It will deepen your relationship with God and help to strengthen our community. Think back to your first degree and the compass you were asked to study. It serves to remind us that we should donate our time and talent in addition to our treasure. 3 A Message from our Chaplain: Dear Brother Knights, Supreme Knight Carl Anderson has called all Knights to offer a Novena of Masses of Reparation for much needed healing for the Church at this most difficult time. These nine Masses will be offered locally and it would be good to have as many Knights attend as possible. Dates and times will be communicated when those are planned. In the meantime we are all called to engage in this current spiritual battle and I encourage you all to pray this prayer daily as a means of giving you strength at this time. Consecration to the St. Michael the Archangel St. Michael the Archangel, invincible prince of the angelic hosts and Glorious protector of the universal Church, I greet thee and praise thee For that splendor with which God has adorned thee so richly. I thank God for the great graces he hast bestowed upon thee, Especially to remain faithful when Lucifer and his followers rebelled, And to battle victoriously for the honor of God. And the Divinity of the Son of Man. St. Michael, I consecrate to thee my soul and body. I choose thee as my patron and protector And entrust the salvation of my soul to thy care. Be the guardian of my obligation as a child of God and of The Catholic Church as again I renounce Satan, his works and pomps. Assist me by thy powerful intercession in the fulfillment of these Sacred promises, so that imitating thy courage and loyalty to God, And trusting in thy kind help and protection, I may be victorious over the enemies of my soul And be united with God in Heaven forever. 4 KOC 833 Coats for Kids Winter in Nebraska can be unpredictable but cold is usually always a part of the season. Dressing warm to walk to school each day is a necessity for all, a luxury for some and impossible for others. The Nebraska State Council of the Knights of Columbus and local Councils would like to change that impossibility to a possibility for some Lincoln area children. The State Council along with local Councils host a Coats for Kids drive. We hope to provide at least 1,000 NEW coats to youth in need throughout the city. Members of our council then come to the school for a visit to talk to students about the Knights of Columbus, who we are, and what we do. 4th Degree Knights Marvin Burbach, Tom Hoffman, and Jim Stell (current Grand Knight) with past Grand Knight Tony Schafers visited the 5th grade class on Friday September 28th. There were many great questions by the students, and of course the swords always steal the show. 5
