One part of this summary was reporting over 9,800 hours of volunteer effort. This amount was on par from last year s report for both hours and number of members reporting. Regardless of the level, you are commended for your efforts and service to the community, the youth, the Church and vocations, and our fellow Knights. Both our Knight of the Month and Family of the Month award recipients were selected in part based on their extensive volunteerism efforts. I would like to draw your attention to several North Alabama Special Olympics activities listed in our February calendar of events. One item of special interest is the February 4 th and 5 th Southeast Figure Skating Competition at the Huntsville Iceplex. This contest includes our Council Member Danny Nelson. If your calendar permits, then please attend and cheer him on. A $3, check will be presented the ARC of Madison County at their next Board of Directors Meeting. This donation was from funds raised during our annual Campaign for People with Intellectual Disabilities (Tootsie Roll Drive) successfully lead by Mike Rose. Looking forward finds our Council Lenten Fish Frys scheduled for March 3 rd, 17 th, and 31 st. We will be partnering again this year with Assembly 004, who will be hosting the fish frys on March 10 th and 24 th, and April 7 th. Mike Weist will again chair this activity. Please assist Mike and the Council in promoting these dates and helping with food preparation, service, and enjoyment. Planning continues for the Shrimp Boil, Smoked Pork Butt, and BBQ Dinner fundraisers along with our monthly Parish Breakfasts. Look forward to additional details on these activities. USEFUL WEBSITES Knights of Columbus Council: Knights of Columbus Insurance: index.html Assembly 004 website: Good Shepherd Catholic Church: As a reminder, if you have not participated in one of the other Council activities, then please consider volunteering for the fish fry and other events. These activities are always enjoyable and there is never a better opportunity for enjoyable fellowship. As always, please take time for yourself and family, aid where possible those less fortunate, and pray for those in need. Vivat Jesus, Steve Gentz Grand Knight, Council 11672

The Shepherd s Watch can also be downloaded or read on the Council s website.... invites you to help with the monthly Parish breakfasts especially the special breakfasts that are larger such as First Communion and Reconciliation. We are asking volunteers to arrive at 8:00 AM, breakfast service at 8:30 AM, and finished by ~11:30 AM. We also need help at the Friday fish frys during the Lenten season. To keep a lamp burning we have to keep putting oil in it. Mother Teresa Our Council served breakfast for the Good Shepherd Church First Reconciliation Class on January 21st. The class size expected was 25 students and with siblings and adults ~100 people.
5 P a ge 5 When things in your life seem almost too much to handle, when 24 hours in a day are not enough, remember the mayonnaise jar and the 2 Beers. A professor stood before his philosophy class and had some items in front of him. When the class began, he wordlessly picked up a very large and empty mayonnaise jar and proceeded to fill it with golf balls. He then asked the students if the jar was full. They agreed that it was. The professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured them into the jar. He shook the jar lightly. The pebbles rolled into the open areas between the golf balls. He then asked the students again if the jar was full. They agreed it was. The professor next picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar. Of course, the sand filled up everything else. He asked once more if the jar was full. The students responded with a unanimous 'yes.' The professor then produced two Beers from under the table and poured the entire contents into the jar effectively filling the empty space between the sand. The students laughed. 'Now,' said the professor as the laughter subsided, 'I want you to recognize that this jar represents your life. The golf balls are the important things---your family, your children, your health, your friends and your favorite passions---and if everything else was lost and only they remained, your life would still be full. The pebbles are the other things that matter like your job, SHORT STORY CORNER Submitted by Mike Rose 2 Beers & A Mayonnaise Jar your house and your car. The sand is everything else---the small stuff. 'If you put the sand into the jar first,' he continued, 'there is no room for the pebbles or the golf balls. The same goes for life. If you spend all your time and energy on the small stuff you will never have room for the things that are important to you. Pay attention to the things that are critical to your happiness such as: Spend time with your children. Spend time with your parents. Visit with grandparents. Take time to get medical checkups. Take your spouse out to dinner. Play another 18. There will always be time to clean the house and fix the disposal. Take care of the golf balls first---the things that really matter. Set your priorities. The rest is just sand. One of the students raised her hand and inquired what the Beer represented. The professor smiled and said, 'I'm glad you asked.' The Beer just shows you that no matter how full your life may seem, there's always room for a couple of Beers with a friend. Life isn't about waiting for the storm to pass. It's learning how to dance in the rain! QUESTIONS OF THE MIND Submitted by Mike Rose February Questions: 1. In Honor of the Holy Family By Tradition, the Catholic Church dedicates the month of February to the Holy Family, the perfect example of family life for all Christians. Christ could have come to earth in any number of ways, yet God chose to send His Son as a child born into a family. In so doing, He set the Holy Family as an example for us all, and made the Christian family more than a natural institution. In our prayers to the Holy Family, we meditate on the example of the Holy Family and ask the Holy Family to intercede on behalf of our families. In this prayer, we ask God to keep the example of the Holy Family always before us, so that we will imitate them in our family life. The Holy Family O God, Heavenly Father, it was part of Thine eternal decree that Thine only-begotten Son, Jesus Christ, the Savior of the human race, should form a holy family with Mary, His blessed mother, and His foster father, Saint Joseph. In Nazareth, home life was sanctified, and a perfect example was given to every Christian family. Grant we beseech Thee, that we may fully comprehend and faithfully imitate the virtues of the Holy Family so that we may be united with them one day in their heavenly glory. Through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.
