2 P A G E 2 Missions Festival 2019 Dear First United Methodist Family, We are very excited about this year s Missions Festival. Our keynote speaker will be Rev. Will Shewey from Shades of Grace in Kingsport, TN. Rev. Shewey was the driving force behind this ministry to the homeless and addicted. They define their mission as serving the Last, Least, Lost and Lonely. Shades of Grace is looking to begin a pilot program with ETSU Medical School to have interns at the center 5 days a week. They offer GED classes, Grief Counseling and Clothing, as well as 25,000 hot meals a year. The ministry worships six days a week and Sunday worship of approximately 200 every Sunday. Another presenter will be Dr. Joe Smiddy who was featured in a 60 Minutes report about a Mobile Health Van serving Southwest Virginia. Dr. Smiddy will also play for us during worship on Saturday evening. Breakout groups on Sunday morning will include Pete Higgs of Renovatus which is a drug recovery ministry on a farm setting in Jefferson County. Ashley Hux, the new director of Central Services will tell us about their work. Rebecca Fetzer from Cokesbury Church in Knoxville will share about the ministry at Susannah s House. This is a faith-based facility providing ongoing treatment and support to moms in recovery and their children. Finally, we will also be hearing about the amazing work at the Helen Ross McNabb Center to women re-entering society after prison. ~Walter Here s our schedule for the weekend: Saturday, March 9 10:00am Food Packing for Stop Hunger Now in Cumberland Place. This is a great event for families. It will help children have a first experience of mission work as we package over 16,000 meals. If every family gave $25, we could pay for this event. We are also asking each Sunday School Class to consider a donation of $100. The cost of this event is $5,900. 5:30pm International potluck dinner in the gym. Bring your best dish! 6:30pm Worship with Dr. Smiddy and Will Shewey in the Gym. Ash Wednesday Join us for PANCAKES & SAUSAGE, followed by an interactive Family-Friendly Ash Wednesday service in the Sanctuary. We will have stations set up for small groups to do together. This is a great intergenerational activity! 5:00-5:45pm (gym) Pancakes & Sausage Meal $6/Adults $4/Child-Size Plate 6:00pm (Sanctuary) Interactive Ash Wednesday Service Childcare (ages 5 & under) will be available, beginning after dinner at 5:45pm, with RSVP to this event. 3 V O L U M E 8, I S S U E 3 P A G E 3 Special General Conference Debriefing We will host a special debriefing session for the Mountain View District, following the called General Conference (St. Louis, Feb 23-26). Please continue to be in prayer for the Holston delegates to GC as well as the conference itself. The debriefing session will begin promptly at 3:00pm on March 3, in the gym. Wednesday Night Small Groups Led by Walter Weikel Led by Asa Majors Led by Lisa Cavallucci Asa Majors will be facilitating a Lenten study titled, Entering the Passion of Jesus: A Beginner s Guide to Holy Week. This will be a 5-week journey diving into the history and literature surrounding the last days of Jesus life. We will walk with Vanderbilt University s Professor of New Testament and Jewish Studies, Dr. Amy-Jill Levine, from Jesus triumphal entry into Jerusalem to his prayerful agony in Gethsemane. This series of lessons will provide a rich and challenging learning experience for us as we live out the weeks of Lent together. Walter Weikel will be leading a 5-week study using Rick Warren s The Purpose Driven Life/What On Earth Am I Here For? During this Lenten season, we will be considering the purposes God has for us. Some are purposes we all share. Others will be specific to your walk with Jesus. This study requires about 10 minutes of reading per day. Cost for the book is $20. Please call the church office if you would like to reserve a book. Parent Chat: The Technology Talk for Every Family (led by Lisa Cavallucci) - Parents feel overwhelmed, under-equipped, and mostly lost when it comes to parenting kids who use technology. Parent Chat is here to help and give hope. In this very manageable book, parents will learn what questions to ask, what matters most, and how to combat the fear that comes with their children knowing more about technology than they do. This is a great study for parents, grandparents and guardians with kids of all ages! 1 st Impressions Team 1 st Impressions is a new team for FUMC. Our hope is to create a systematic way for first-time guests to feel welcomed in to our building and our congregation. We recognize that some people may feel intimidated by our building and the number of amazing Sunday school classes and opportunities offered by this church. We are asking everyone in our congregation to join this team by continuing to be a warm and smiling presence on Sunday morning. We are also asking members of our congregation to consider joining our efforts by being a parking lot greeter, being a liaison at one of our upcoming Guest Kiosks, or by being a new guest guide. Parking lot greeters will spend time in the parking lot between services and Sunday school to help first time guests get to the front doors of the church and offer umbrellas on rainy days. The Kiosk liaison will be at the information kiosks we are developing to help answer questions about the church and offer information. Finally, our guest guides will wear a brightly colored lanyard on Sunday mornings to be easily identified in the hallways. If someone has a question or is lost in our building, our guides can help point them in the right direction! We will be offering training for these different areas. None of them are very difficult but we want you to be confident in your ability to help new people find their way at FUMC. We are excited to expand the ways in which we offer hospitality to our first time worshipers and as we share our love and excitement for FUMC Morristown! We hope you will consider joining our team! 4 P A G E 4 Upcoming Kids Choir and Cherub Choir Dates Children's choirs are doing a wonderful job and having a great time on Wednesday night as they work on singing and learning about music and worship. Following are dates to mark on your calendar: Wednesday, March 6 (6:00pm) Kids Choir (2nd-5th graders) sing in Ash Wednesday service. Saturday, March 9 (6:00pm) Kids Choir sing at the Missions Festival. Sunday, April 14 both choirs participate (sing and process) in Palm Processional for both 10:30am services. Sunday, April 28 Children s Music Sunday in worship during the 10:30am Traditional Service for both choirs. An end of the year celebration meal will follow the service. 6 P A G E 6 Altar Flowers Each week, Blossom Shop brings 2 vases of flowers for the altar in the Sanctuary. Both of these arrangements cost $35. People reserve a Sunday to pay for the flowers and give them in memory or in honor of a loved one. Some are standing reservations for every year. You will be sent a reminder letter the month before your Sunday along with an envelope to make your payment. Donors are listed in the bulletin each week. We have a few spots on the 2019 calendar available to reserve. Please contact the church office if you would like to reserve one of these dates below: Sunday, March 31 Sunday, November 24 This is Thanksgiving Sunday and we won t have flowers, but we will have a magnificent cornucopia on the altar. The cost of this is significantly more that the flowers. We are asking 4 people to take a spot for $50 for this Sunday. Sunday, December 29 United Methodist Women Elizabeth Circle will meet Wednesday, March 6, at 11:00am at Regency. Contact Margaret Thornton for more information. Ruth Circle will meet Monday, March 11, at 11:00am in the Community Room for a special birthday party program to celebrate the 150 th anniversary of United Methodist Women. Bring a sandwich for lunch. Contact Eugenia Bond for more information. Deborah Circle will meet Tuesday, March 12, at 6:00pm in Cornerstone. Contact Charli Curry or Amy Taylor for more information. Mary Martha Circle continues collecting Penny and a Prayer offering. Communion Offering As you come to celebrate Holy Communion, we ask you to consider leaving an offering at the communion area. Money received during communion is used to help people with rent and utility bills. We hope you will be generous with this important ministry. Joyful Hearts March 21 Joyful Hearts takes us SOUTH OF THE BORDER!!! at their March 21 meeting. Students from Morristown Covenant Academy will present a program of Hispanic dance. Gateway Church s International Pastor, Omar Perez, will share his experiences of growing up in Cuba. He is also a Spanish teacher at Morristown-Hamblen East High School. Lunch will be catered by Jersey Girl for $9. Make reservations and pay $9 by Monday, March 18. A sign-up sheet is in the church office. Spring Love Morristown Event During the month of March, we are collecting donations of peanut butter crackers, granola bars, Little Debbie cakes, bottles of water and mints, to be included in Grab-n-Go Bags for our Fire Department, Police Department and 911 Dispatchers. Please bring your donations to the collection box, located in the church office. Children s Church kids will create handmade notes to include with the bags. On April 7, Youth will gather in the Community Room during Sunday School, to assemble the Grab-n-Go Bags.
