Many consttutonal scholas, accodng to Menand, feel that ths Bll has to be "vey pecse" n defnng the offenses. Davd dekaufe '75, Anne Auehach '77, JoAnne Gbbons. Jon Chosad, Dk weme '74. and Davd Deyfuss '76 all handled the pats cedtably f not n some cases wth stong comman d, as they wee faced wth poblems common to actos n melodamas. The set desgn fo ths play was done vey well. Schubet's Last Seenade, the othe pesentaton, was wtten by Jule Bovasso, a faculty membe of Saah 'Lawence College. The play centes a- ound a confontaton between two new acquantances, a Fench hadhat constucton woke and a Radclffe sophomoe, n a Fench estauant. Wth most of the acton followng the decton of thle Mate D., played by Eml Mllet, who seved as the naato, the othe actos, Davd Cox. Nkk Velfot, Jay Van Dwnglen, Tom Mlls, and Davd Deyfuss all seemed to have dffculty n dealng wth the oles, whch led to some awkwad pefomances. Pofesso Joseph Evengham s stll not back yet, afte undegong an opeaton ths summe. As the MT communty hopes fo a speedy ecovey, Ed Dana, the techncal decto, has been dong a yeoman's job, oveseeng these student "hoto by Sheldon Lowenthal poduced, dected, and desgned poductons, wth somne atstc assstance fom playwght and Pofesso Pete Guney. Ths wte would lke to see futhe coheence gven to the two one act plays chosen. Tyng to expess o pesent smla themes by dffeent playwghts o contastng styles of dffeent peods would add moe meanng to the evenng. These thoughts notwthstandng, all those nvolved wth MT Damashop ae to be commended fo addng anothe dmenson to the cultual lfe of the nsttute. by Stephen Owades ThOUgh1 the evoluton of MUSC. both the medum and the envonment of pefomance have changaed geatly. n ecent yeas, much attenton has been gven to pelomance of ealy musc on "ognal nstuments" of the compose's day, but elatvely lttle cae s taken to fnd the appopate acoustcal suoundng fo pefonmance of vaous types of musc. The moden concet hall s bult fo a compomse between claty and evebeaton whch s geneally appopate fo classcal and omantc musc. Much of eale musc, howeve, was ntended to be pefomed n chuches, whch then tended to have a geat deal moe evebeatcn than concet halls, o even most chuches, do today. Such musc loses an ente dmenson wthout the "wash" of sound added by a hghly esonant acoustc. Seveal yeas ago, Mchael Tlson Thomas conducted the Havad Glee Club n Symphony Hall (on a Boston Symphony Spectum Concet) n an oganum by the late twelfth centuy compose Peotn. nl ode to ceate a sutably esonant acoustc, he had the sound of the chous mked and played back n the at galley at the ea of the hall, and the esultng added evebeaton eplayed n the concet hall. The effect was nteestng, but not vey convncng. t was thus wth geat nteest that l noted M. Thomas's ntenton to have the men of the Cantata Snges pefom planchant nteludes wthn Chapente's Mass fo Seveal Tstuments 1z7stead of Ogan on the Boston Phlhamona's Octobe 7th concet at the Natonal Theate. Ths unusual hall, an ex-vaudevlle house and move theate, was fst used by the Phlhamona last spng. The sound fom the stage s faly clea, f somewhat dffuse when head fom seats on the floo. The men's chous was placed hgh n the second balcony, fom whch they poduced an amazngly esonant, "stone-clhuch-y" knd of sound. t seems that the Natonal Theate's unusual combnaton of acoustcal popetes lends tself deally to mxtues of old (chuch) and moe ecent (concet-hall) styles of musc, and hope that these emakable popetes ae exploted often n the futue. The Boston Phlhamona s a selfgovenng ochesta composed of local fee-lance muscans. Substantally the same goup accompanes many local chouses as the Cambdge Festval Ochesta. They dd a fne job n the fst concet of ths season. Mchael Thomas's pogam was extemely dvesfed-ngolf Dahl's Musc fo Bass nstuments, the afoementoned ChapenteMass, Stavnsky's Abaham and saac, Haydn's Symphony 81, and Beethoven's Elegac Song and Calm Sea and Pospeous Voyage. The Dahl was supebly pefomed by sx bass playes. Although nteestng fo the acoustcal effects noted above, the lage sze and modem nstumentaton of the ochesta dluted the contasts wthn the ochestal sectons of the Chapente. Davd Evtts dd an excellent job wth the dffcult batone solo n the Stavnsky., but he was too often ovewhelhmed by the ochesta. The Haydn canle off wnnngly. whle the Beethoven choal peces call chatably he sad to met the obscuty. The Phlhamona's next concet s ths Sunday evenng (Novembe 4) at 8 pm, agan at the Natonal Theate, 537 T.emont Steet (between Bekeley and Claendon). The conducto s M. Lng Tung, who was bon n Shangha but studed and now, esdes n the U.S. Although ths s hs fst appeaance n Boston, he comes wth mpessve cedentals, and the concet should be woth heang. The pogam wll consst of Haydn's Synzphony 44, Fank Matn's Conceto fo Seven WnTds, Stngs, and Pecusson, and Bahms's Seenade 2. Tckets, at $5, 4, and 3 (student seats at $2) ae avalable at the box offce at 6 pn. Fo nfomaton, call The gandly ttled Cambdge Symphonc Bass Ensemble played some Renassance and Baoque bass musc n the MT buldng 7 lobby on Octobe 6th at noon. The sx o so seconds of evebeaton would make mush of" most musc, but t s deal fo the epetoe played on ths pogam. found the pefomances easonable, though somewhat dsappontng. The conducto-less ensemble had touble wth ts ntenal balance, wth mpotant lnes often submeged. n addton, longed fo a lghte and bghte sound, such as that of ealy bass nstuments. would encouage anyone wth any nteest at all n musc to follow Leonad Bensten's Noton Lectues. The lectues ae open to the publc on Tuesday nghts at the Havad Squae Cnemna (but tckets ae nealy mpossble to get), and boadcast on Channel 2 at 4 pm on Sundays. Bensten s dealng wth musc va an analogy to moden lngustcs, a la Chomsky, and he s able to make many deep stuctual pont clea to the lay audence by ths pocess. The lectues also nclude pefomances taped by Bensten and the BSO last fall: so fa, the 'Mozat G Alno Symnphony. and the Beethoven Pastoale have been shown, and ths Sunday's lectue wll nclude Debussy's Pelude to the '4fte-noon of a Faun. Photos by Roge Goldsten MT~sg RE&H by P.E. Schndle, j. t seems appopate today - when a pomnent membe of the Executve Banch s busy gong as mad as a hatte - to be stagng a play about a madman. Man o.f' La 1lanc'ha s a sympathetc potayal, unfotunately, but as long as we ae all thnkng about a cazy man, we mght as well watch one on stage. Ths Muscal Theate Guld poducton s a good one, oveall. n seveal senses, t s defeated- as ae all plays staged 1n Kesge, the audtoum that makes a lousy theate and a magnal audtomln11. People who have acted on the stage n the man theate-, whee ths pefomlance s beng pesented, tell me the ochesta cannot be head fom the stage. Ethe that. o the fact that the pefonmance that evewed was a "tech eheasal" may explan why Aldonza- Dulcnea (Caol Lvngstone) was consstently shap evey tme she sang. But that's t: n the ente pefomance saw, that s my only majo ctcsm (and Caol s sad to have had a cold). On the whole, the actng was good, the sngng was adequate. and the sets and lght desgn wee excellent. So, t aveages out to be good. The stage s not as sweepng as the nnovatve one used on Boadway, pctued n many natonal magaznes, whch swept out nto the audence. Stll, t s used well unde Jack Maye's decton; almost all of the scene changes ae made plausble wth a combnaton of moves by the actos and lghtng, the latte desgned by Jack Pees. Set desgne was Jeff Sta. (Maye appeas on the stage, befly, nea the end. You wll pobably notce that afte the man s taken away by the nquston, none of the chaactes you ecognze s mssng.) The ochesta, conducted by the nevtable Bll Gossman, spakled as always. ndvdual pefomances: Don Qwoxte was played to a T by Ton Tomasovc, although he ddn ' t appea qute as old as the pat called fo. 6 PAGE6 FRDAY, NOVJEMBER 2, 1973 THE TECH epoduces ths effect. The tollng bells at the clmax of the last movement ae eal bells athe than tubula chmes, and they add an appopately dabolcal touch nstead of the usual nconguous "Avoncallng" sound; the BSO owns a pa of magnfcent bells fo just ths moment. by Stephen Owades The fst ecodng n the pojected cycle of the woks of hecto Beloz by Sej Ozawa and the Boston Symphony Ochesta, that of the Symphonze Fantastque, s now avalable, and t s a splendd achevement. The Boston Symphony has nade somewhat of a specalty of Beloz fo many yeas, and t s good to see Ozawa mantanng, and even mpovng upon, ths geat tadton. Afte many hous of compasons to othe vesons, concluded that ths latest s also the best one avalable. Many of the most notewothy chaactestcs of pevous ecodngs ae equalled o even supassed, whle Ozawa adds some unque, touches. The woodwnd "fanfaes" at the stat of the last movement, fo example, end wth the downwad slde ndcated n the scoe; only Ozawa's eale ecodng (wth the Toonto Symphony on Odyssey-an excellent budget-pced ecommendaton) The exctement geneated n Munch's RCA-BSO veson s hee n full measue, along wth bette playng and ecodng. (Munch's eale BSO ecodng, now unavalable, had bette playng as wellhopefully RCA wll essue ths on Vctola some day.) The pecson of the Boulez veson fo Columba s at least equalled, but wthout the stange temp that Boulez mposes on the musc, especally n the mach. Bensten's ecent New Yok Phlhamonc ecodng on Columba has a supebly populsve account of the waltz; amazngly enough, Ozawa's s even bette. Pete's BSO ecodng, now on Vctola, s totally outclassed, soundng deadfully dull by compason. Coln Davs's Phlps ecodng does not have the enegy level of Ozawa's, although hs s the only veson know of that obseves the fst and fouth movement epeats and ncludes the conet pat n the waltz whch Beloz added afte publcaton of the scoe. The ecoded sound on the new Ozawa ecodng s typcal of Deutsche Gammophon's wok n Boston, contanng a satsfyng mx of concet-hall ambence and nstumental detal. t demands to be played at concet-hall volume fo geatest effect, and the balance s the most natual of ally veson have head. Oveall, a "musthea" dsc. am ambvalent about followng a concet wth a scoe, because t can be a dstacton, but usng a scoe can help a geat deal to clafy a pece of musc on epeated lstenng to a ecodng. The Symphone Fantastque s avalable n the excellent sees of Noton Ctcal Scoes, whch contan not only the musc (n an authotatve edton) but also detaled analyss and commentay. Noton scoes ae avalable at any musc stoe., As a membe of the chous, am not an unbased obseve of the fst week's Boston Symphony Concets, whch featued Sej Ozawa conductng Beloz's Damnaton of Faust. Nevetheless, must epot that was geatly mpessed wth the wok of the ochesta, solosts, and chous, and especally wth M. Ozawa's peceptve ntepetaton of ths wdeangng scoe. The solosts, Edth Maths (Maguete), Stuat Buows (Faust), Donald Mcntye (Mephstopheles), and Thomas Paul (Bande) sang well. Mss Maths's voce s somewhat lght fo ths mezzo ole, but he sngng was qute senstve. Stuat Buows, who s blessed wth an ncedbly beautful teno voce, was eplaced on Satuday and Tuesday nghts (due to hs po commtments at t he Metopoltan Opea) by Hay Theyad, whose sngng evealed an excess -T of Boadway and Puccn n hs muscal backgound. Donald Mcntye's opulent basso was deal fo the ole of Mephstopheles, except on Satuday nght when he lost hs voce, due (appaently) to food posonng. M. Paul's sngng of Bande was also well chaactezed, and he pefomed heocally n assstng M. Mcntye on Satuday nght as well. The ecodng sessons went vey well, and Deutsche Gammophon wll be makng the poduct of ou labos avalable sometme next spng. Fo some eason, ths wok has become the test pece n a "battle of the bands" among the wold's leadng ochestas. Wthn the span of a yea, New.b)~pefomances have been o wll be gven by the Chcago Symphony unde Solt, the BSO wth Ozawa, and the New Yok Phlhamonc unde Boulez (f the stke s settled), and a fothcomng Phlps ecodng adds Coln Davs and the London Symphony to the lst. All ths attenton to a pece whch has been qute neglected fo many yeas! The BSO's second weekend of concets ncluded Beethoven's Empeo Conceto wth Chstoph Eschenbach as pano solost, Lget's Meloden, and Bahms's Fst Symphony, wth Ozawa as conducto. Ths was a supeb concet n evey way. The playng of the Boston Symphony has neve been fne n nmy memoy. Eschenbach's playng n the Empeo was techncally excellent, and he and Ozawa had a ae appot on muscal mattes. The Bahms was staghtfowad but supebly executed, and left the audence wth the satsfed feelng of havng head t as Bahms must have ntended. The E'mpeo has been ecoded fo elease n a set of the Beethoven concet wth Eschenbach and fve dffeent ochesta/ conducto teams; no doubt t wll be an extemely compettve sngle ssue as well. The Spngfeld out was pmaly due to the fact that Spngfeld played a bette game, but t must also be sad that the condtons wee unfamla to MT, as the game was played at nght on Spngfeld's Poly-Tuf feld.
