Lately, events have poven focbly that the Commttee s fa fom beng completely nfomed as to the opnons o the actons of the students t epesents. Detemnn- the feelng of tle publc, often vague and conflctng, s no easy task, but so essental s ths nfomaton to any govenng oganzaton that costly and laboous attempts fo ts detemnaton ale often made. Wtness the Lteay Dgest who s soon to go to consde able expense by pollng a lage numb~e of college undegaduates n ode to dscove the atttude on peace and wa. n the Unon, f t succeeds, thee wll exst an automatc pollng devce of whch the nsttute Commttee can take advantage wheneve questons elatng to the school ae dscussed. Today, at ts fst meetng, many students, htheto natculate, wll fo the fst tme, have the oppotunty of publcly expessng the opnons, a pvlege whch n the past has been estcted to those wth posts on pulblcatons o the student govenment. ROUND TABL STUDNT-FACULTY RLATONS OThas been a favote complant at Technol- T ogyp that the elatons between students and nlembes of the faculty ae' too fomal, and theat most students neve fom pesonal acquantanceshps wth the nstuctos. Two yeas'ago ths matte was studed wth some degyee of thooughness by the Student- Faculty Cuculum Commttee and n ts epot t attempted to analyze the easons :fo the exstant stuaton. The esult was a fom lette sent to -the membes of the nstuctng staff su~owestnog geate accessblty of.students to staff membes though egula confeence hous and blanket nvtatons. Thle fst defnte step n the decton of facltated contacts between students and the teaches snce that tme wll have ts naug-uaton tonght when the student-faculty dnne meetng s sponso ed b~y the Do mtoy Commttee leave the ncepton. At these, Nothl Hall s to b~e flled wth ound tables wvth seven students and a pofesso of the own chloosn- at each table. Thee wll be no afte-dnnle speeches, a, bjoon whch all wll alppecate. but nstead, t 's expected that each table be the cente fo a dscusson n whch the students and the guest wll patcpate. Thle Domtoy Commttee should be co-ngatulated fo concevng of such an deal way to foste close elatons b~etween student and facullty. t has been decded by the Do}mtoy Commttee that these dnnes wll be contnued as a egula featue f enough students'ale nteested. t wll of couse depend on the success of tonght's ntal ventue whethe enough nteest wll be developed to mantan them. Gven the ght students and ght pofesso at each table, such meetngs can be of geat value to all patcpatng. Now let us hope that the fatenty men and commutes develop an equally sutable means to the end of developng lastng fendshps between students and the nstuctos. ON TH FNC LCTONRNG q fh poblem of electoneeng at the nsttute, the poblem whch wll be dscussed at the fst meetng of the Technology Unon tonght, has been fogged by a lack of undestandng of the tem by the student body. The only method of dscussng ths queston s by avng at common defntons, and the authoty on such mattes s a heavy ed book called Webste's New ntenatonal Dctonay. Webste's defnton of the wod "electonee" s: "to wok fo, o n the nteest of, a peson, tcket, paty, o the lke, n an electon." f the tue sgnfcance of ths defnton s undestood, t seems natual and nevtable that electoneeng n some fom cannot be pohbted. t s the opnon of ths newspape that no ulng o acton of the nsttute Commttee can pevent attempts to nfluence electons. That student votes should be nteested n puttng a cetan nomnee n offce s an unavodable outcome of the electoal system. The only way to pevent electoneeng s to do away wth electons. f electons ae to have any meanng we must have an nfomed electoate. The student votes can vote ntellgently only on the bass of the knowledge of the canddates. lectoneeng has too long been egaded as anl evl. We must poceed to dscuss t as somet"lng that can be kept undegound but not eadcated. ts functon of nfomng the electoate s so vtal that t -wll be pefomed n some manne, good o ll. B~ut unbdled electoneena would -ve se to as many, f not moe, abuses than occu unde the pesent system. A ch canddate, fo nstance, would obvously have an unjust advantage ove a pooe val; mud slngng mght make ts appeaance. The offces mght degeneate to poltcal footballs, kcked about by conflctng, goups of fatenty men, domtoy esdents, and commutes. The weneal answe to ths poblem s obdvous: egulated electoneeng. The specfc answe s dffcult. How can electoneeng be egulated? Pobably- the smplest soluton, but not necessaly the best, s complete contol of electonee ng publcty by the electons commttee. t could set a lmt on pe-electons budg~ets fo tle canddates. t could estct publcty mateal to such nfomaton a's the atngs, actvtes, couse, and esdental goup of the canddates. Such1 acton has been legal even unde the pesent law pohbtng electoneeng, but t has -neve been adequate-.ly systematzed, an admsson by the nsttute Commttee that ts stand s llogcal. Wth The Amecan College dtos Gemany's ducatonal System Geman students don't have the advantages that Amecan students have.. nollment n Geman unvestes s lmted to 15,000 students a yea. Only ten pe cent of these may be women. The tue state of educaton n Gemany was bought to ou attenton, by a foegn student who spent last sufme n that county studyng condtons. A Naz educato, Pofesso von Hble of Lepsg, assets that at least 90 pe cent of Geman youths" who aspe to hghe educaton wll neve be pemtted by govenment decee to eceve such. an educaton. Wdespead unemployment among college gaduates s gven as the bass of ths ode. Asde fo the economc unsoundness of ths attempted soluton of the unemployment poblem, the stuaton pesents an aspect of vtal nteest 40 Amecan undegaduates. Lmtaton of educatonal oppotuntes nevtably stunts the ntellectual gowth of a county. The low aveage ntellgence n ou own ndustal centes and thoughout the ente South whee educatonal facltes ae not hghly developed, ndcates that tendency. Statstcs on the Amecan educatonal system expose the fallacy of the scholastc excellence as a cteon of economc success. n addton to the gd scholastc confomaton, Geman students must have the appoval of a Naz offcal to qualfy as a canddate fo college. Ths andunts to a sezue of the ntellectual output of the Geman naton fo patsan poltcal puposes. Compulsoy mltay dlls and the small pecentage of women students ndcate that hencefoth Geman unvestes ae ntended to povde a mltant, hghly oganzed body of Naz suppotes. Tuth and knowledge seem de'stned fo the same fate that justce and fee speech eceved n the "enlghtened" Rech. n the past the amazng apathy of the Amecan undegaduate body to poltcal and economc affas has nsued t almost complete mmunty fom patsan (Contnued on Page 3) Women, Song, and... Fom these two smple lnes enough nfomaton may be obtaned to epoduce exactly the offcal colos, wee all actual samples lost. D. Allan W. owe, '01, was pobably esponsble fo the fst suggeston of standadzng the Technology colos and, as a esult of hs suggestons, the Alumn Councl, n 1926, apponted a commttee "to decde upon and-standadze two colos, one a cadnal ed, and the othe a slve gay, whch shall be accepted as the offcal colos of the Massachusetts nsttute of Technology." Fst among the poblems fontng the commttee, was the task of fndng two samples whch mght be authotatvely accepted as a standad. Howeve, afte nquy had been made of seveal of the olde alumn, a sample of each was obtaned whch had been peseved n an envelope away fom the lght. These samples wee of the ognal colos selected and fst used n Snce o specmens of ealy nsttute colos wee found whch had hghe authentcty than these, the commttee ecommended the adopton as offcal nsttute colos.
