VOLUM 89,No. 52 MT,CAMBRDG, MASSACHUSTTS THURSDAY, DCMBR 18, 1969 FV CNTS MT students say da ft dstbuton not andom Fou MT students have concluded that the ecent Selectve Sevce System lottey was not entely andom, followng a statstcal analyss of the, numecal dstbuton of call numbes by month. n a lette to the edto of Scence magazne, Cal Plche, Jonathan las, Lay Lebofsky, and Jay Kunn, stated that the pocedue'used to fll the capsules contanng the dates nto the bowl may have been ncoect. Thefnal ode of dates shows that many of the low numbes n the call ode fall n the.second half of the yea. n ths espect, Novembe and Decembe wee especally low n the aveage call numbe" wth a mean call date of and espectvely. An equal (but not andom) dstbuton of hgh and low numbes would place any month's mean aveage call numbe at The last sx months of the yea have means lowe than ths mean, whle the fst sx months' aveages ae hghe than ths fgue. Of the fst half of the numbes dawn, 73 fell n the fst sx months, whle 110 fell n the last sx months. The Pobablty fo the fst sx months beng above the mean aveage call numbe of and the last sx months fallng below t s about.2%. Howeve, the lottey tself s only quas-andom. As each date s dawn, t s emoved fom futhe dawng and cannot ente nto the calculatons agan, as t must f the lottey was to be puely andom. The mean aveage call numbes ae as follows: Januay , Febuay-203.0, Mach , Apl 203.7, May 208.0, June 195.7, July , August , Septembe 157.3, Octobe-182.5, Novembe-148.7, Decembe t s possble that these mpobable esults wee due to fllng the bowl sequentally by month. Januay's numbes wee placed n the bowl fst, followed by the Febuay numbes, and so on to the Decembe numbes, whch wee placed n last. The fou MT students wee not the only ones ntgued by the dstbuton. ndependently, two othe students pepaed a mathematcal study of the lottey esults. And n Wsconsn, a unvesty pofesso wote a lette to the edto of the New Yok Tmes suggestng that the chances of the Decembe 1 dstbuton occung wee amazngly small. Fo the pesent, the Coop wll contnue to sell G poducts aleady n stock. Due to the tme of yea, the Dectos ponted out n the statement that t was a pactcal matte that no moe puchases would be made fom G untl afte that meetng. Pof. Loss of the Havad Law School a Decto of the Coop and ts Geneal Counsel. who made the statement fo the Boad, emphaszed that they wee "not makng any commtment." The membes of the Boad felt that they should wat untl moe of the student dectos would be pesent at a meetng. Only two of a possble eleven student dectos wee at yesteday's meetng. The est have not yet been elected snce they wee just ecently added to the Boad by an amendment to the consttuton. Benjamn Ross, of Havad, Boston coodnato of the Youth Commttee to Suppot G Wokes, sad that the decson was "completely unacceptable." He sad that hs goup would contnue to apply pessue on the Coop n the fom of pcketng. Actvty s lkely to be cutaled dung the holdays howeve. Ross had pesented to the Dectos a petton sgned by 1612 students callng on the Coop "to emove fom sale all Geneal 'lectc Company goods untl such tme as a contact settlement s eached whch s accepted by a democatc vote -of the G wokes out on SDS clamns nvestgated stke." Ross made a fve-mnute pesentaton and aftewads answeed the Decto's questons. Accodng to Ross, the Boad consdeed the queston fo about an hou befoe decdng to defe the fnal decson. Ross also sad that hs goup would,be oganzng on the MT campus sometme afte the esumpton of classes. Ths could lead to pcketng of the Tech Coop f enough suppot could be ganed on the MT campus. Unon membes have aleady begun pcketng stoes n downtown Boston. The student goup, ecently fomed, has not as yet been nvolved n ths. Seveal stoes n Lynn have aleady ageed to stop sellng G poducts, and the unon s contnung to ask all stoes to do so. The pckets, howeve, have been stessng that they have no bone to pck wth the ndvdual stoes, only wth Geneal lectc. The stke tself has been gong on snce Octobe 26, when t began afte appoxmately sx months of baganng between the unon and G. Dung ths peod, unon wokes have been ecevng $12 a week n stke benefts. The unon clams that G has efused to bagan wth them and has made only nonnegotable offes. At pesent, the unon s askng fo an 18-month contact wth a 35 cent wage ncease and cost of lvng benefts. Wth 150,000 of ts membes on stke, the U has exhausted ts funds. The AFL has gven the unon $5 mllon and the CO has asked ts membes unons to assess the membes $1 each. The unons feel that f they loose ths stke, they wll be n geat dffculty when contacts n othe lage ndustes come up fo negotaton. Because of ths, they have gven geate than usual suppot to the U. Wllam Sloan Coffn pleads wth hs audence to be mltantly tende at Tuesday's Chstmas Gonvocaton. STORY ON PAG OPPOS MRY.. N RFRNDUM; 2100 CST VOTS Seventy pecent of MT students-votng n a ecent poll oppose the nsttute's contnung MRV eseach. Ths s the majo concluson of the Geneal Assembly sponsoed "MRV Refeendun," n whch 35% of all undegaduates cast the ballots. The gaduate esponse was somewhat lghte, but nonetheless about 70% of the gaduate students votng also opposed MRV. Sgnfcantly, of the 1394 undegaduates votng n the efeendum, 747, well ove a majoty, checked off a box n the. optonal secton ndcatng that they felt they wee ''knowledgeable enough on ths ssue to vote." By contast, only 19 undegaduates thought themselves not suffcently knowledgeable to vote on the ssue. ven moe supsng was the had lne atttude the undegaduates took on the ssue of negotatng out of the pesent MRV contacts. A majoty of those students who had any opnon on the negotaton queston stated that they felt that MT should "ty and negotate out of pesent MRV contacts befoe they expe, and f unsuccessful, beak those contacts unlateally." Thus f the sample epesented by ths efeendum s accuate, ove half the undegaduates dentfy themselves -wth the SACC/SDS poston that egadless of any futhe debate, f MT can not get out of MRV legally, t should smply emove tself any way t can, and woy about the consequences late. Futhe, t appeas that the sympathy of the undegaduates les lagely wth mantanng the nstumentaton Laboatoy as a egula pat of nsttute lfe. Of those espondng, 926 favoed "conveson" of the labs, pesumably to moe "socally useful" cvlan-oented pojects. Ths follows the lne of both the Pounds Panel and SACC. 303 students sad they pefeed that the labs contnue to functon wth the nsttute n the "pesent elaton," thus ndcatng some suppot fo the pesent Depatment of Defense funded contacts. Only 79 students favoed "spnnng-off" the l- Labs, and only 41 would "beak them up." The esults of the efeendum wee fst announced at a egula Geneal Assembly meetng Tuesday nght. Task Foce chaman Dave Mclwan '70 made the announcements, whch wee stll qute sketchy and ncomplete at that tme, because the ballotng had fnshed only a few hous pevously. Booths wee set up all ove MT to facltate the votng, and wee manned by voluntees. Upon pesentaton of an nsttute actvtes cad, students wee allowed to fll out the ballot. Relayng of the esults to the GA and to MT as a whole was delayed by the necessty of countng ballots by hand. Not enough money was avalable to buy the compute tme needed fo a moe apd count and evaluaton of the complex ballotng fom.

Second semeste begns afte a two-day beak and ends wth anothe two-week eadng/ exam peod. Plan 2: Regstaton fo fst tem on Monday o Wednesday (dependng on yea). Chstmas vacaton s peceded by an eght-day study peod and followed by a thee week study peod, the last two ncludng exams. Agan, second semeste stats afte a two day beak and ends wth a two Week eadng/ exam peod. Plan 3: Same egstaton as plan 2, but no exam peod afte Chstmas. nstead, Januay would have 3/2 weeks devoted to ndependent study. Agan, a two day beak comes befoe second semeste, whch also contans no exam peod. The commttee ecommended that plan 2 o plan 3 be adopted ove plan 1, but sad that ethe of the thee would mpove the MT calenda. t felt that the Januay ndependent study peod would be especally benefcal, pemttng students to do poject wok, obtan tutong, study whateve they wshed, attend semnas o caee oentaton meetngs, o even elax and nvestgate Boston The commttee's ecommendatons follow fom what t feels ae the objectves fo a new calenda. They lsted these as: () lmnatng the Januay lame-duck peod. Pofessos fnd that students ae less eceptve to new mateal at ths tme, beng peoccuped wth mpendng exams. (2) asng the end-ofsemeste ush and equalzng the length of the semestes. (3) Povdng a moe vaed and effectve educatonal pace. The commttee found that many students ae unde almost constant pessue wth few slack peods. (4) Povdng "fallow" tme fo ndependent effot at a lesuely and ndvdual pace. (5) Povdng oppotunty fo flexblty n leanng and teachng styles.

By Robet Foue n ts egula fall concet last Sunday nght, the MT Symphony Ochesta pesented once agan the sot of pefomance ts audences have come to expect: a sold pogam of twentethcentuy musc, featung lagely lttle-known woks of geatly vayng styles. Whle not eveythng was qute as sold as one mght have hoped, and the audence was a few hunded less than the usual capacty cowd (pehaps eflectng the weathe and the ecod tunout fo Kng Kong), the goup's mpessve accomplshments lost none of the luste. The pogam opened wth nest Bloch's Conceto Gosso of 1925 fo stng ochesta wth pano obblgato, one of two such peces (the othe wtten n 1952) whch have eceved less than the just shae of attenton. t s an expet study n the teatment of the wam sonotes of massed stngs, equng staghtfowad, confdent ensemble playng and seveal sklled solosts. Thee s lttle books: Flms n papeback By Robet Foue Pnted vesons of plays go back as fa as the ancent Geeks-whch s to say, as fa as play-wtng tself. They've become famla to most people though the use n classooms, as a substtute-and geneally a poo one-fo seeng an actual Sade on hs deathbed. n the mnd of the old Maqus, hs expeences wee deved fom contact wth hs sadstc uncle, the Abbe de Sade; that s, the Maqus played a ole n a play, actng out hs uncle's fantases. Thus, -we have scenes such as de Sade, agonzng n pson, beng nfomed by hs uncle that thee s no wall, and he can come out of the cell to contnue the play (.e., hs lfe). t comes ove as a confused, unconvncng, petentous, and mechancal busness. De Sade hmself clams to be ddled wth gult, but ths s spoken, not acted. Petty faces ae pesented as the conestone of hs obsesson. Suely, thee was moe to t than that! But wost of all, cuelty s neve ceated wth any convcton. Physcal culelty s meanngless wthout psychologcal cuelty, and the motvaton fo t. To smply flm people whppng each othe s absud; n ode to take t seously, such whppng ought to be an aspect of a elatonshp, and an expesson of the need fo psychc powe. De Sade cannot be taken seously. At best, t s comcal, and at wost, as bong as the successon of petty faces and deees t pesents (of couse, soae may not fnd that so bong). Afte the flm, asked a neghbo whethe she'd notced that shady chaacte n font of the maquee, sellng used whps. t's a good thng was jokng, fo the ushes and manage mght have a had tme f such paaphenala wee eadly avalable n the vcnty of the theate. pefomance. They do have a moe vtal use, howeve, namely pesevaton of the play. Vtually evey tadtonal theatcal poducton must wok fom a pnted scpt; and when membes of the ognal poducton ae no longe lvng, thee s no othe way. O thee wasn't, at least, untl the nventon of sound flms. Flms, needless to say. need no pnted pesevaton. Poducton and pefomance ae dent- 'cal, and one need only save the ognal pnts (whch sn't necessaly too easy, f they'e on old ntate stock). Makng them nto books, except fo commecal novelzatons, has been almost unhead of, and wth good eason. Wth the pesevaton aspect gone, they'd be useful at most fo nstuctonal puposes; but then, as a substtute fo seeng the move tself, they'd be next to wothless. Howeve, the emegence of flm as a ecognzed at fom. and academc feld, has bought new consdeatons to bea. Despte the avalablty of pnts fo pvate sceenng at faly low pces, a seous student stll can't keep copes aound fo detaled efeence; and anyhow, thee ae-mechancal poblems n tyng to scutnze a shot secton seveal tmes ove. The embodment of a move as seveal long stps of acetate s nconvenent, to say the least, and suggests one moe vtue of pnted plays. (Stangely, we have ecently seen the success of unscptable expemental theate, whch may owe somethng to the geneal atmosphee poduced by the moves.) - The esult of all ths, n any case, s the ecent emegence of seveal sees of "flm books" meant fo seous study. n the pocess, howeve, none of the poblems mentoned has gone away; thee s stll no tadtonal wtten fom fo a move. n othe wods, how does one tansfe nto pnt what s happenng on the sceen? Moe specfcally, the poblem s ths: most flms do stat out n a wtten fom, known as scope of Ulysses nto a play, some of the essentals of the damatc development seem to have been lost. A seous queston posed by ths poducton s whethe an adaptaton of Joyce's wok belongs n a tadtonal theatcal settng at all. The flm veson of Ulysses was successful to a geat extent n extactng the damatc powe of the novel. ven n the flm, howeve, one could ague that the eal sense of the novel was dstoted. Theatcal vethe shootng scpt o scenao. These ange fom detaled scpts wth exactng dalogue and canmea dectons to ough sketches, and dectos may follow them exactly, o only geneally o hadly at all. f the shootng scpt s followed closely, t may make a sutable pnted veson; f changes wee not too geat, t may stll be usable wth appopate notaton o modfcaton. On the othe hand, f the decto made sgnfcant alteatons, o woked fom a vague scenao to begn wth (o lost hs notes afte shootng), thee s only the fnshed veson to ely upon. Someone has to watch the move and tanscbe the dalogue and cameawok. The esult -s only stll moe poblems, snce thee's no ageement on how much detal to ncludespecfcally, on whethe to just descbe the acton o to ndcate ndvdual shots. Futhemoe, most such books ae lbeally suppled wth stlls fom. the move, and wth good eason.
