Fou seno Kenyon athletes eceved the followng awads: the Seno Athlete of the Yea Awads, fo women, Wendy Eld, and fo men, Chstophe Shedd and Zachay Space; and the Jess Wllad Falkenstne Awad, John Emens. The pledges wee sleepng n the because the Hell DKE ba-oo- m Week was n sesson. John Keady, the ffth DKE pledge, was asleep behnd the DKE ba, and not vsble to the kdnappes. The fact that he was not taken leads college nvestgatos to suspect that actve DKEs wee not esponsble, as they would have known to look fo Keady. Newly elected DKE Pesdent Phl Cable fully dened any DKE nvolvement n the cme, sayng, "We ae the plantffs n ths matte." The feshman DKEs also beleve that the fatenty was not nvolved. Dean Readng sad on Monday "ght now we dont have any specfc peson, pesons, o goup whch s suspect. Fo the moment we ae at a bt of a standstll, but we have no ntenton of lettng ths dop." Ane Hamlton of Secuty, who s leadng the nvestgaton, has obtaned plaste casts of te tacks beleved to have come fom the assalants ca, as well as seveal objects found at the scene of the cme. "Should pesons be dentfed," sad Readng, "ou ntenton at the moment s to adjudcate ths unde the hazng as well as the conduct polces." The hazng polcy, nomally appled only to mattes whee pledges of a fatenty ae abused by Task Foce would addess poblem of campus vandalsm By Pam Welsh Ae the Guadan Angels comng to Kenyon, to powl the campus fo vandals? Not accodng to May Chalmes, the ognato of the buddng Vandalsm Task Foce. Stll n ts plannng stages, the functon of the Task Foce has not yet been completely defned. t s clea the goup wll not be a band of vglantes. Chalmes and Paul McCatney have appoached Student Councl, Feshmen Councl, FC, the deans and Secuty about the dea. So fa, she says, "esponses have been mxed, but the majoty have thought that the Task Foce should begn wth asng student awaeness of the costs of vandalsm both n tems of damage chages and the punshments whch ae beng meted out to offendes hee." As was mentoned n the Collegan last week, although acts of vandalsm have deceased ths yea, those whch have occued have been moe vsble. Ths fact, t seems to Chalmes, has futhe deceased the communtys toleance of vandalsm, and has made people moe open to the noton of a Task Foce. Dean Robet Readng has been encouagng, accodng to Chalmes, and has expessed a wllngness to poceed wth the plan, n he wods, "as a wokng dea." Anold nvestgaton membes of the same, would apply hee, Readng sad, because "The pncples and the danges ae the same as a egula hazng volaton." The College hazng polcy states that "To abuse o punsh a pledge by mposng an uneasonable o dsageeable task, to submt a pledge to physcal njuy, uneasonable physcal stan o any act detmental to the physcal o emotonal health of a pledge shall be consdeed hazng." One DKE pledge sad that they had only had fou hous of sleep snce Sunday, as they wee havng the Hell Week, and wee goggy at the tme of the ncdent. Readng also stessed the gavty of ths case, sayng that "n anothe, non-colle- ge stuaton, we could be talkng about kdnappng and assault and battey." The feshman DKEs ae gvng no comment untl the case s esolved. Pesdent Cable sad that "to dvulge nfomaton at ths pont would jeopadze ou poston." He sounded optmstc about the nvestgaton, although he agan declned to offe any comment. Many detals of the case eman vague o unknown at ths tme. The numbe of assalants, the numbe of cas, the exact tme of monng, as well as the degee to whch the pledges wee beaten o paddled s unclea. Hamlton, Decto of Secuty, consdes the Task Foce to be "a wondeful poposton," and sad Secuty has offeed "all the coopeaton we can" to the goup. Student eacton has not been so unfomly postve. Chalmes sad seveal students have been "dsmayed that we have to esot to somethng lke ths, what wth the sze of ou communty and the decease n the occuence of vandalsm," whch, she notes, "s done by a small mnoty of the populaton." Othes wth whom she has spoken thnk ths s pecsely the ght tme to gve moe publcty to the punshments fo vandalsm, n ode to ad n the contnuaton of ts decease. "The most mpotant thng," she adds, "s that the ssues ae beng dscussed, and the people ae offeng many postve, ceatve answes." The next step fo Chalmes s to dscuss wth Dean Edwads the way whch the Task Foce mght best ft nto the Colleges judcal system, among othe consdeatons. "Then we have to fom the goup tself, wth membes fom Student Councl, Feshmen Councl and FC and anyone else who s nteested," she says. Both Chalmes and McCatney welcome suggestons and nvolvement fom the communty, as they wok to make the Vandalsm Task Foce a ealty at Kenyon.

3 Ths Tuesday, Student Councl sent a lette to evey membe of the faculty estatng ts equest that students be allowed to patcpate n faculty meetngs. We suppot Councl, but acknowledge that not all ssues dscussed n faculty meetngs ae necessaly fo students to hea. But we consde t the students esponsblty to take an actve ole n dscussons that concen the futue dectons and long-te- m goals of the College. Occasonal student attendance at faculty meetngs s necessay f studentsae to poceed fom an nfomed poston n such dscussons. We mantan that both goups shae common nteests n many aspects of college lfe; exchange of deas on these ssues s vtal. The questons suoundng the futue of admssons polces concen 8-yea-o- all of us. Because the pecentage of ou socety s declnng, Kenyon wll soon be faced wth a dffcult dlemma: how to mantan academc excellance n a fnancally theatenng envonment. Anothe ssue whch concens us both s tenue polcy. Many of us came to the College because t seems to place a value on pesonal teachng. Cetanly, f Kenyon wee to become a school whch pushed ts faculty to publsh to the extent of compomsng the pofessos classoom pefomance ts eputaton would change, pobably fo the wost. Students need to take an actve ole n dscussons of the cuculum. t s too easy to become passve ecpents of knowledge n the classoom. f students wee to have a voce n the decsons whch the chaacte of Kenyons cuculum, we would become detemne moe ctcal espondents to couse mateal. The esponsblty fo ntatng student-facult- y exchange of deas on these ssues now ests wth Student Councl. We uge Councl to submt to the faculty a new poposal outlnng specfc equests n a teno of eason and coopeaton. Councl should ask the faculty to elease an agenda of topcs to be dscussed at ts meetngs. Councl should popose that a fomal pocedue be outlned wheeby students could gan admttance to faculty meetngs. Fnally, Councl should pusue an ageement wth the faculty whch would ecognze cetan ctea (such as the ssues lsted above) fo admsson whch would be satsfactoy to both pates. The only way students can expect to see such poposals actvated s to lobby fo them though nfomal channels. We uge all students and faculty membes who suppot these poposals to ntate debate on the subject of attendance befoe the next faculty vote. The spt of the lbeal ats can only be nvgoated by fee exchange of dffeent deas and vewponts; t s compomsed, howeve, by sececy and lds n ad Page Two OPNON Apl 2, 983 Reconsde student attendance segegaton Ḃeyond human dgnty On Wednesday monng, fou Delta Kappa Epslon pledges wee kdnapped, suffeed physcal abuse at the hands of the captos, and wee left mles fom campus n the cold, wth nsuffcent clothng. Such an act deseves the complete condemnaton of the communty. n no way can ths be passed off as a pactcal joke; clealy, t was motvated and executed n a spt of shee vcousness. The fact that such a spt exsts at Kenyon s, when t manfests tself, always alamng. To say that t s out of place hee s to undestate t t s completely antthetcal to the deals of thecollege, and s an attack on the most basc sense of human dgnty. Appaently and unfotunately, cetan membes of the communty do not consde these bn-dnbelefs g. We must emembe that Hell Week s not wafae. Fatentes should not be gven a cate blanche to do anythng they please to the pledges. Whle we deploe what happened to these DKE pledges, we have to wonde f the fact that they had only slept a few hous n thee days does not n tself consttute hazng. Such acts happen patly because students fo whateve easons do not feel pat of the outsde wold, and do not feel that they need patculaty woy about the actons whle hee. Dean Readng sad that "n anothe, non-colle- ge stuaton, we could be talkng about kdnappng and assault and battey." The communty students as well as admnstatos should teat t wth ths degee of mpotance. Whle the case s unde nvestgaton by the College, nstead of the polce, we must not foget that Kenyon s not a wold unto tself. The Kenyon Collegan News Edto Andew K. Paadoxcally, t seems both outageously malcous and so nomnal as to be unpesecutablc. As the deans face the dffculty of appopate dscplnay acton, the ncdent wll pobably be soon fogotten. We at Kenyon enjoy a geat deal of playful feedom n ou close communty. Robet Helbone, one man who should know what hes talkng about n economc mattes, Monday nght called Reaganomcs "the most extaodnay con job that anyone has eve put ove on the Amecan publc." Befoe a capacty cowd n the Bology Audtoum the esteemed economst, hstoan and polfc autho assaled seveal assumptons and peceptons he beleves undele the economc polces of the pesent admnstaton. But fst Helbone dstngushed Reagonomcs fom supply-sd- e economcs, whch he sad, "s gone." The latte polcy he passed off as an whch poduced an "economc skd" by applyng the "bake" (tght money polces) and the "acceleato" (tax cuts) at once. Helbone jokngly noted that n the co-autho- ed fothcomng edton of a book he wth economst Leste Thuow, he has stcken any seous menton of the supply-sd- e theoy. Accodng to Helbone, peceptons held by Pesdent Reagan, othes n hs admnstaton, and wen us, ae moe mpotant than economcs. 5 Page Fou OUT 8c ABOUT Apl 2, 983 By Pete Whelan The Whte Sut, wtten and dected by Alonso Alega, was staged ths weekend at the Bolton Theate. t was an exctng poducton: a new play by a Kenyon wte, supebly acted wth musc especally wtten fo ths poducton by Camne Pepe. The play, whle absolutely contempoay n evey espect, s the poduct of a long tadton. t was fst poduced at the Hans-Oott- o Theate n East Gemany, wth ognal musc by Rolf Schll. The East Geman poducton was dected by Rolf Wnkelgund who s pesently hee on the Kenyon campus. The Geman veson opened n Septembe of 98 and s now n ts second poducton n Fankfut-Ode- n East Gemany. t s a poltcal play, a poltcal fable n the manne of Betolt Becht, wth not a lttle of Geoge O well n the plot. ts themes ae found n Shakespeae and n the Geek tagedans : demagoguey, the ethcs of govenment, the decay of deals unde the stess of pactcal poltcs, the nadequacy of blnd fath, the fea of self-esponsblthe powe of tuth, the vtal ty of the ndvdual, and the ole of the atst s he an obseve o acto n the dama? The dama evolves aound the Whte Sut tself, and ts fou Custodans: the faled poet Albeto (Las Hanson), the faled feman Mlton (Benjamn Cue), the faled fsheman Bas (Jonathan Tazewell), and the faled student Joaqun (Jonah Madoff). These fou ae, on one level, allegocal fgues. Bas s the Beleve, a smple man who tuly beleves that the Suts tenuous connecton wth a sant has gven t maculous powes and bought fsh and theefoe lfe to the decayed vllage. Mlton s the dealst. He sees the Sut as a symbol of hs own and the vllages fath n a bave new wold, a wold of cystal, as he says, n whch the state and all cognate nsttutons (such as Commttees of Custodans) shall have wtheed away, and all the suts The Whte Sut poducton shnes n ts Englsh language peme Ttus: Lvng By Steve Gegg Pofesso of Economcs Emetus Paul M. Ttus plans to stay n Gambe. Not that that should supse anyone who knows hm. 983 s the 50th annvesay of Ttuss comng to Kenyon. He has seen fve college pesdents and the establshment of the Kenyon Revew, the bunng of Old Kenyon and the constucton of moe than a dozen majo buldngs. n shot he has watched, and been a pat of, almost a thd of Kenyons hstoy. Ttus aved at the school n 933, nea the end of the Geat Depesson. t was a tme, he says, "when eveythng was unde evew because we wee n touble." The yea befoe he aved, full pofessos salaes had been cut by 40 and seveal faculty membes had been dsmssed. Ttus clams "a good deal of luck" n fndng a job, but t s a cedt to hm that he was hed dung such an economcally dffcult tme. The countys economc hadshp made t dffcult to attact students, and one of the plans to ncease enollment nvolved the addton of a busness school. Pofesso Ttus was a majo opponent of the poposal. He agued that "we should hold to lbeal ats" because "to ncease ou offengs would esult n dluton of the esouces of the school." When asked f he sees next yeas Womens Studes as smlaly stetchng Kenyons esouces beyond the scope of lbeal ats he sad, " dont thnk a majo n Womens Studes s appopate o even that the basc couse n Womens Studes s appopate. dont know enough about t but suspect that ts chef objectve s conscousness asng." He adds that and all the flowes ae pue and whte. But thee s an enemy wthn the anks Joaqun, the Demagogue, sem-pofessonal the upstat bueaucat tuned poltcan, one of the gey and hollow men by whom so much of the wold s uled. Hs s the unfogveable sn of cyncsm, battenng on the dealsm and smplcty of othes. To hm, govenment means contol; the Sut and the peoples fath n t, s the leve of contol. Albeto s the Atst; lke Tono Koge o Mles Covedale he s afad of lfe, unable to gve hmself. He can only obseve, comment, ende nto bad at. Fo hm the Whte Sut s only a povsonal ttle fo a novel. The play s hlaously comc at tmes, n a way that ths allegozng doesnt suggest. The comedy s povded manly by the common enemy of all the Custodans and of the vllage the Company, epesented n the peson of ts agent Kkk (Daman Young), and hs two assocates. "Kkk" s the Spansh sound of a cowng ooste and ths ooste s delghtfully, flamboyantly vllanous, wth hs slck good looks and hs flow of nsolently seductve Company money. He s the demon love, the demon Captalsm. He s accompaned by a coupted hppy, Polloloco (Wllam Talpey), and hs female alte ego, Po Po (Kelly Doyle). She too s captalsm, the latte day Whoe of Babylon to the Thd Wold. She says nothng, but mmes lewdly to Kkks wods as he auctons money to the fshemen. Who wll sell hs boat hs soul fo the least amount? t s n the scenes n whch these thee take pat that Alonso Alegas at eaches ts heght. Thee ae occasons when Albetos whnng, o Mltons bodyng foth of cystallne castles n Span, gows tedous. Despte the excellent actng thee ae no weak lnks n ths cast the pace flags, the dama gves way to ddactcsm. But when the thee vllans ae on stage the dea s gven full symbolc and damatc ffty yeas of Kenyon hstoy the pogam mght be alght f womens ssues wee teated objectvely athe than meely fom a femnst pont of vew, though he would athe that the pogam had been ntegated nto all the depatments. Not, mnd you, that Ttus s sexst. He states that the addton of women n 969 "may have saved the College. Pofesso Emetus Paul Ttus toots hs hon Hgh school students wee seekng coeducatonal schools. thnk we made the ght move at the ght tme." Hs only eget s that almost all colleges became co-e- d, and thus students optons wee lmted. Shotly afte the dea of the busness school had been dopped, Ttus became chaman of a commttee whch studed the feasblty of havng an Honos pogam. The esult was the pogam, based lagely on Swathmoe Colleges, whch stll exsts today. Accodng to Ttus, the key to ts success s the outsde. 0 expesson, and they ae vastly entetanng. Has eve a moe splenddly and comcally eotc numbe ht the Kenyon stage than Kelly Doyles Po Po? The to ae a pefect team, supebly cast and dected. As the plot moves towads ts clmax the poducton shows new weaknesses and new stengths. Some of the techncaltes ae excellently conceved: the Custodans, now completely unde the contol of the Demagogue, no longe speak as men to the vllages o to the audence, but haangue us though a loudspeake, a devce whch admably symbolzes the mechanzng of the elatonshp. The once fendly fshemen ae mltazed, amed wth clubs, and posted n the asles to pevent audence-subveso- n; the sensaton we expeence s most authentcally uncomfotable. But ddnt cae fo the maze of opes and potable posts set up befoe the Custodans. The dstance between ules and people s adequately damatzed by othe means, and examnes who evaluate each Honos canddate. Because of them, "the pogam made a geat contbuton n sevng as a stmulus fo both canddates and fo teaches," whose teachng sklls wee beng mplctly evaluated.. n the school yea, Ttus was selected by the Fod Foundaton to help wth the economc development of the Kngdom of Jodan. n Jodan, he and hs colleagues developed a fve-yea- plan, whch the govenment of Jodan adopted. He etuned fom Jodan n 963 and taught at Kenyon untl hs etement n 972. What does Ttus thnk of the college now? He pases the cuent admnstaton but adds, " thnk we all would lke to see some nnovatons compaable to the Advanced Placement Testng Pogam and the old Kenyon Revew." He says we need to "ognate and become leades n new dectons" n ode to "attact vey unque students lke those who followed Pofesso John Cowe Ransom hee n the 40s and 50s." n the same context he pases the Poltcal Scence Depatment fo ts Poltcal Affas Confeence Cente (PACC). whch he fnds "useful to the students and to the opnon makes" and whch "gves vtalty to the pogam n socal scences." Snce hs etement, Ttus has been "enjoyng lfe." He tutos math at a mddle school and seves on the Knox County Metopoltan Boad. The Boad helps needy famles to pay the ent. He s also a boad membe of the Reted Senos Voluntee Pogam (RSVP), whch coodnates ove 300 voluntee wokes n thee countes. The slck Kkk (Daman Young) tes to convnce thefshemen to sell the boats when the stuaton begns to dsntegate, people blunde about the stage, knockng ove the posts and tppng ove the opes n a way whch s no doubt delbeate, but appeas uneheased. Sofa, played by Magaet Dost, woes me also, well potayed though she s. Sofa s Albetos old glfend, etuned to the vllage ss wth all the clea-sghtedne- and sophstcaton of he college educaton. She lets us know that the outsde wold s not all the Companys. But ths posed and lovely young woman seems such an unlkely sweetheat fo the egegous Albeto. n fact, she neve eally seems pat of the same unvese as the othe chaactes, so that they detact fom each othes cedblty. She appeas at tmes lke a human actess suounded by anmated catoon fgues. Sofa also eveals a weakness n Albeto hmself. Why s he such a vey obvous clown? Suely t s an ovestatement to make hm such a pathetc falue as a wte. What would we thnk of even the most consummate atst who fals, as Albeto does, to wan hs fends of an appoachng enemy? Such a chaacte mght be tagc wthout losng hs place n the comedy and we mght beleve n Sofas attacton towads hm. The success of Albeto s that though hm we, the audence, also become a chaacte. t s he who speaks to us most often; t s fo us that he s poducng hs mpatal atfact. We ae, lke hm, obseves, detached fom the human stuggle, at the theate to be entetaned and then to go home to bed. Albeto shows the deadlness of such detachment. Can we, the play asks, clam we ae fully human f we do not cae, o do not dae, to commt ouselves fully to lfe? We cannot clam smply to be apoltcal, fo Albeto fals Sofa n the same way he fals the vllage: "You wouldve... made love to MAKE YOUR SUMMER RESERVATONS NOW Fst Tavel 4 South Fve Agents 7, J t me, to descbe t, to wte t down? Lvng s a poltcal actvty; shkng the stuggle s shkng lfe. The clmax of the play s th apotheoss of Polloloco. At thepon! when Kkk s klled tyng to steal the Sut, Polloloco s captued anc set, bound, at the hghest pont of the sceney. As the nvadng foce close? on the vllage, he hangs n chans damatcally. By ths tme, all the deals and hopes of the potagonst have been seen to founde. The Demagogue has been shown fo wha: he s, the dealst s hopelessh compomsed, the Beleve ha; mudeed n the name of hs fath the Atst has taken ove the edtoshp of the paty popaganda sheet. Only Sofa etans he: awaeness and he ntegty, and. damatcally, she hadly seems tc count. Now the Cazy Chcke begns to sng: "Polloloco wll sow debut ts fa moe panful to le." The wods ae banal, but the message has the whole foce of the pla; behnd t. He contnues to sng shot, sgnfcant veses whch accompan; and comment lke a Geek chous o. the fenetc conflct among the Custodans below. Suddenly a shot ngs out and he s dead; the play stops. The moment s a movng pledge of fath n the meanng of the ndvdual. t s an affmaton, n the collapse of all doctnes and deals, of the dese fo lvng tuth. The lhte Sut was a movng expeence fo me. The play s splendd. On the playng feld, Jodan expects to see a moe spted level of competton. "Thee 5 7, ballgames," Thomas explaned. Ths way thee wouldnt be a poblem tyng to get the Judcal Boad togethe fo heangs. Senate Cha Alan Batchelde asked the subcommttee to make ths a pat of the amendment n the pocedues secton. The next meetng of Senate wll be Apl 27. Economst questons Reaganomh fom page 3 Collegan: Was slow money gowth esponsble fo the substantal fall n the nflaton ate? Helbone: Essentally, the tght money polcy bought about a vey shap se n unemployment whch had a seconday effect snce many busnesses began to have dstess sales whch cut poft magns. n the face of gowng unemployment lnes, labo unons baganed less aggessvely and even ageed to wage eductons n tems of cost of lvng adjustments. Bg busnesses, n the face of weakenng demand, wee no longe opeatng n an expansve envonment and they engaged, fo the fst tme n decades, n pce was (e.g., aplane ndusty). The ate of nflaton gadually came to a halt, because an economy thats not gowng, that has hgh unemployment, that has a hgh degee of busness falues eventually foced to lowe pces. ndeed, the plan woked, but t was accomplshed only wth a lot of suffeng, patculaly on the pat of smalle busnessmen. At pesent, the nflaton ate s close to zeo and may even, although t s unlkely, become negatve. stll dont feel, howeve, that the economy has been wung dy of nflaton. thnk the declne n nflaton can be attbuted to a lage amount of weckage n the system. beleve the poblem s that ts not gong to be possble to get the economy movng agan to an adequate level of pefomance wthout ekndlng the old cuse (nflaton). Thats the eal tagedy of the monetay polcy; that t stops nflaton by bngng the economy to a halt. nflatonay popetes ae now a pat of all moden socety. nflaton s not an Amecan dsease, ts a pan-naton- al captalst popety. The dsease has many oots: mxed economy, the welfae state, bg busness, bg labo, expectatons, ndexng, to name a few. All of these ae deeply ooted n the socoeconomc, cultual popetes of moden captalsm. These - nsttutons cannot be easly emoved and thus moden captalsm s "natually" nflatonay n the way old-fashoned that captalsm was "natually" depessonay. Collegan: What couse do you thnk Amecan fscal and monetay polcy should take n the futue? Should we mantan estant n tems of monetay polcy? Helbone: Fst, the gowth of an ntenatonal money supply makes t much moe dffcult to un a slow, steady money gowth polcy. Bg copoatons can boow as they damn well please, whle the smalle copoaton feels the cedt cunch. Second, as soon as the economy gets nto the mddle ange of unemployment and utlzaton, t wll get back on the nflatonay path agan. Monetay polcy can only toleate modest ecovey. favo anothe polcy that s called an ncomes polcy. These polces keep ncomes n lne and must be lad on as pemanently as a monetay polcy. feel that ncomes polces ae moe compatble wth a much hghe degee of ecovey than monetay polcy. WANT A GOOD LAUGH? Well, you can get one as well as povde one by contbutng to the Collegan s annual Humo ssue. Ths yeas classc wll be publshed on May 2, and submssons ae due May 8. Just dop you wok off at the Collegan offce o n ou box n the SAC. Wee lookng fo lettes, atcles, pseudo-evew- s anythng thats a spoof on us o on any facet of the College. Hees you chance to abuse and amuse; dont pass t bv!
