1 ISIS SHRINE NEWS Situated in the Oasis of Salina, Desert of Kansas POTENTATES MESSAGE: Nobles and Ladies, February 2019 Volume # 2 Welcome to 2019! It s hard to believe how fast the last year has passed. It s rapidly coming time for the Shrine Circus in Salina. This year s circus will kick off with the block party at Tony s Pizza Events Center on April 11 from 5:00 to 7:00 PM. The block party will be in the same location as last year in the back parking area of the event center. On Friday 4/12 at 2:00 PM will be the first performance with the second performance following at 7:00 PM. There will be three performances on Saturday and one on Sunday. With the circus coming up I would like to stress once again that EVERY NOBLE must purchase their tickets this year. This is our biggest fund raiser of the year and without every single noble participating we stand to lose income once again this year. I challenge every single Noble to purchase their tickets this year. Your Divan is working hard to raise money throughout the year and we have many events coming up this year. We also have a Hospital Trip to St. Louis coming up in July. I really hope that this year that every single Noble and their Lady can make it to as many events as possible. If we don t get back to the basics of what this fine organization stands for then we won t be around much longer. I think all of you know that our hospital system is one of the strongest in the world. They wouldn t be in that condition if it weren t for all of you. Now is the time to look toward your Shrine Temple as well. If we don t make our Shrine Temple strong again it will cease to exist. The hospitals can and will continue to exist with or without us so lets get our Shrine Temple back to the strong, proud fraternal institution it should be. I personally invite every single one of you to join me this year in the goal of making Isis Shrine great once again. Thank all of you for your support! Fraternally yours, Russ Ingle Potentate
2 MESSAGE FROM THE ISIS SHRINE CHIEF RABBAN On behalf of my Lady Valerie and myself, thank you to the Nobility for electing me to be your Chief Rabban for I know that with this position comes great responsibility, and I will do my best to represent ISIS Shrine in the most positive way throughout the year. This is my third year on the Divan, and it has been an outstanding journey to this point. I have been married to my lovely Lady Valerie for 39 years. We have two children who are happily married and they have blessed us with four grandchildren. I have owned my own business, O'Ryan Electric, for 22 years. I am a member of Russell Lodge 177, Scottish Rite Valley of Salina and Knights of St. Andrews. Over many years I have served as a Cub Scout and Boy Scout Leader and am a recipient of the Silver Beaver Award. In 2020 the Imperial Session will be held in Kansas City, MO. Anyone interested needs to notify me as soon as possible so that we can get names turned into Imperial. My goal is to have as many ISIS Shriners present for this event to support Imperial Sir Jeff Sowder of Midian Shrine. MESSAGE FROM THE ISIS SHRINE ASSISTANT RABBAN As we begin this new year of Isis Temple, I would like to start by thanking all the Nobles who welcomed my lady Donna and I to meetings and events last year. We have made many new friends as our journey with the Shrine has progressed. We plan to continue visiting as many club meetings as we can. I retired from my last career in 2017 after 30 years as a financial advisor. Prior to that, I was an ag pilot, flying over 6,000 hours in the Midwest. I also managed restaurant and banquet facilities for Marriott & Doubletree, as well as smaller local establishments. I have owned and managed commercial and residential rental real estate for over 20 years. Donna has been a banker in Morland for her entire career (I won t say how long). We are looking forward to another great year at the temple! Building our membership, having more successful fundraisers and having lots of fun! Please join us! Warm regards, Alex Leslie Assistant Rabban Fraternally Yours, Darrell Ryan Chief Rabban REMINDER FOR DUES PAYMENTS!! PLEASE ALWAYS ADD YOUR NAME AND MEMBER NUMBER WITH YOUR DUES PAY- MENTS. 3 RECORDERS CORNER I would like to start by saying thank you to Illustrious Sir Mark Smith and his Lady Cindy for great leadership and continued dedication to the greatest fraternal organization in the world, ISIS Shriners and Shriners International, as well as the most superb philanthropy in world, Shriner s Hospitals for Children. The Divan, Nobility, and Ladies wish you the best of luck in all of your future endeavors, and hope to see you are all future ISIS Shrine events. On behalf of my Lady Megan and myself, thank you to the Nobility for electing me as your Recorder for 2019, and entrusting me to representing you over the next year. This will be my third year as your Recorder and I continually make positive strives to better myself and learn on a daily basis. My Lady and I will be married 10 years in May, and have 2 children, Tre and Taryn, and 2 furry children, Jack and Penny. We both are members of the military, and love serving our state and country. I currently sit as the Senior Warden for Ellsworth Lodge #146. Your newly elected Divan was installed on January 18, 2019 and look forward to serving the Nobility of the ISIS Shrine through If you have questions or would like to visit with any member of the Divan, please contact them, we are here to represent the Nobility of ISIS Shrine. If you would like to have a meeting with me personally, please contact the office or myself and set up a meeting. My office hours for meetings are Tuesdays and Thursdays, anytime after 5:00 PM. If you have not yet paid your dues for 2019, and may be possibly in arrears, please make those payments at your earliest convenience. These dues are what we need in order to help keep our doors opened and continue to serve the children that we support. If you have questions about your dues, please contact the office, myself, or the Membership Committee Chairman Russ Kontas. Please read through the newsletter or visit the calendar on our website to keep up to date on events that will be taking place throughout the year. Lately, it seems like RSVP is a dirty four letter word that does not want to be used. I am asking that if you plan to attend an event, please RSVP by the provided date so that the proper amount of food can be ordered, the proper amount of tables can be set up, and anything else that would make the event be successful can be completed. Thank you to the Nobility, their Ladies and all of our supporters who continue to make this one of the greatest organizations in the world. Please continue to work hard and be active in your local ISIS Shrine Club and/or an ISIS Shrine Unit and come out and participate in the different events throughout the year. Your positive activity throughout the year will make your experience in the ISIS Shrine much more enjoyable. HIGH PRIEST AND PROPHET STATEMENT I m new to the Divan. The departure of David Neal (Oriental Guide) for a new job in Arizona left two openings for 2019, High Priest & Prophet and Oriental Guide. I was elected as HP & P and am delighted to serve you in HP &P will be a new experience for me as I have very little experience in leading prayers. Usually when asking God for help, it was to get me out of a mess and promising to never do that again. My focus on the Divan this year centers on two things: helping our Shrine Clubs and Uniformed Units to sell more ads, tickets and sponsorships for the Circus and increasing our Temple s membership. From my point of view, the two areas are intertwined. The Circus is the money maker that enables us to function. Declining membership has caused our Temple dues to go up, ticket and ad sales to go down. With your help, we can reverse the trends and rebuild our fraternal and financial strength! At the end of 2019 I hope and pray that I don t have to revisit paragraph two! Russ Kontas High Priest and Prophet TREASURER- GARY KAY Casey Flinn Recorder

5 MEMBERSHIP COMMITTEE UPDATES Greatings Nobles and Ladies, I would like to introduce myself as a new addition to the Membership Committee. My name is Brian Elliot and I have been appointed to the ISIS Membership Committee for Along with membership responsibilities I have also accepted the duties of Chief Aide for the Salina area. Some of my past and current Masonic and civic accomplishments include my becoming a Mason in 2003 and affiliating with Salina #60 Lodge until I joined Solomon Lodge #105 and maintain that membership currently. In 2002 I joined ISIS Shrine at the age of 18. I joined my first unit which was teh Clowns a short time later, and was president of the Clowns from 2016 through 2018, and was also Secretary of the Clown Unit from 2015 through I've also been on the ISIS Shrine Circus committee since I have also been a Potentates Aide in the past for Ill Sir Larry Priemer and Ill sire Ernest Endsley. Along with my Masonic and appendant body activities I also have been very active with Big Brothers and Big Sisters in the Salina area since I believe the Shrine Fraternity to be one of the most worthwhile groups in existence today. I take my appointments this year very serious and plan to be very effective part of this noble organization. I would like to see 2019 be a year of re-building. We need to re-build our membership along with getting our current members to reengage the basic fundaments of our fraternity. If anyone has any suggestions or would like to assist with this enormous task please feel free to contact me, or any member of the Membership Committee or any of your Divan members including the Chief Aides. Thank you! Brian Elliott MEMEBERSHIP PETITION? MAIL IN THAT PETITOIN TODAY! We need the Candidate Petition in the office to process prior to any Ceremonial if at all possible. Download a petition from our website, complete and mail it to, along with payment the Isis Shrine, PO Box 2778 Salina, Ks th Salina Shrine Circus It is that time of year again, that time to start planning for the annual Salina Shrine Circus. Tarzan Zerbini proudly brings to Tony s Pizza Events Center, one of the greatest circus in the world. This year the shows will be April 12 (2pm/7pm), April 13 (10am/2pm/7pm), and April 14 (2pm). This is the largest fund raiser that the ISIS Shrine holds on an annual basis. Its success rest on the shoulders of the Nobility and their Ladies, widowed Ladies, and our supporters. It first starts with the purchase and/or selling of your circus tickets. Soon you will be receiving a letter with an order form and a return envelope. When you decide how many Nobility tickets you would like to receive, you simply fill out the order form and mail it back to the Temple or call the Temple and place an order using your debit/credit card. Once your payment has been processed, your tickets will be mailed to you, held at the Temple for you, or donated on your behalf. The ticket prices this year have not changed from last year. A Nobility packet of tickets, which contains 6 kid tickets and 4 adult tickets and costs $ Individual kid tickets cost $6 and individual adult tickets cost $11. The success of the circus and the continued operation of the Temple is heavily dependent upon Nobles purchasing and/or selling tickets to the circus. The second largest revenue we have for the circus comes from the selling of advertisements for our publication that we sell during the circus. The red advertisement books are ready for pickup, and need to be returned to the office no later than March 15, This will give the office sufficient time to complete putting together the publication and get it to print. If you or someone you know wants to sponsor a classroom, the cost is $ and that provides them with 20 kid tickets and 4 adult tickets. If you are planning to bring a group of kids and plan to feed them prior through the Temple, those numbers need to be to the office no later than April 1, The cost per kid will be $1.50 and the meal consists of a hotdog, chips, candy bar and a bottle of water or soda. The feeding of the kids will take place at Kenwood Hall located by Tony s Pizza Events Center. Everyone on the Circus Committee hopes to see everyone at the circus to help sell novelties, cotton candy, snow cones, and help assist with the many other tasks that need to be completed to make it a success. Thank you for your continued support of the Temples largest fund raiser, and remember, everyone is a kid at the circus!!! 6 MESSAGE FROM THE ORIENTAL GUIDE Dear Brother Nobles and Fraternal Friends, Baby New Year is here again shacking his rattle for the first time as the last notes of Auld Lang Syne fade into memory. With those notes also goes many events that made 2018 very memorable. May each Nobel take just a moment to reminisce about these as we anticipate the firsts of One of those is that, with the help of many Friends, Nobles, Shrine Clubs and Units, together we paid down the building mortgage by over $60, Another one of those events was the Contributions to the 100k Club. Everyone that helped make these events happen deserves a resounding applause and a very fraternal Thank You. Other events include the creation of the 2025 committee, the Financial Advisory Committee, the Membership Committee, all those that participated in the financial work shop, a fantastic Fall Ceremonial with Midian Shrine and many other events too numerous to list here. To every person that made all these possible, I give a resounding applause and a very Fraternal Thank You. As with all memories, we must keep them in our hearts, but it is time to turn our attention to the many firsts that the New Year brings. One of those is the 2019 Divan. I am honored to sit beside a distinguished group of Brother Nobles. Thanks, are extended to the 2018 Divan, for the words of advice and encouragement, leading to the decision to run for Oriental Guide. Another Thank You to Mark Smith, for the personal invitation asking that I whole heartedly consider this opportunity. Still another Thank You to each Noble that put his faith in me by casting his vote in my direction. I will not bore you with a lengthy or exaggerated resume, but will suffice to say, that I have been married to my lady Lisa for 25 years. I have worked for American Electric Company, for 20 years and I have been a member of both Blue Lodge and Shriners for 11 years. I will not lie and say I am not nervous about the opportunities that lie ahead, but I do believe that as a group of Fraternal Brothers and Friends, we can and will move mountains for the Greatest Philanthropy in the world called Shriners closed and 2019 opened with a fun filled ringing of the bells at the Shrine, by Fun Pianos and guests. With voices raised, we sang Auld Lang Syne, as the first event in the 2019 Shrine building. May that be the first of many such events that happen this year. For those that did not join the 100K Club last year, let this be the time and pledge $100 each year for three years. Joining the growing list of those that have to help this great organization. Those that did not participate on a committee or in a unit or club, there is room for you to join. I know the Financial Committee, Membership Committee, Uniformed Units, just to mention a few would love to have another Brother to stand shoulder to shoulder with. For those that have not gotten your Fez out in a while, let this be the time. Notable events for February start with the Appreciation Breakfast for First Responders and Military Personal on the 9 th at 7:00 am. Then things move onto the Valentine s Day Dinner on the 16 th at 7:00 pm. Sister Sarah Tree will present entrainment after dinner. Followed by the TGIF dinner on the 22 nd put on by the Engineers at 6:00 pm. These are only three of the many events scheduled during the month of February. Please join us, clasp a fellow Brother s hand, make a memory for tomorrow and help move this, the Greatest Fraternal Organization in the World to a new First. Be an active part of lifting Shriners one Memory at a time. Fraternally Yours, Brian Riedel Oriental Guide *STATED MEETING* MARCH 23, 2019 LOCATION: ISIS SHRINE TEMPLE (200 E. 7 Legendary rock band donates worldwide hit song to Shriners Hospitals for Children FOREIGNER has recorded a special version of its classic song I Want To Know What Love Is FOREIGNER, the classic British-American rock band, has announced that it will be donating its hit song I Want To Know What Love Is to Shriners Hospitals for Children. FOREIGNER recently recorded the song with Kelly Hansen as lead vocalist, and they will be creating a new music video featuring Shriners Hospitals for Children patients. The new release will be available for download on Google Play and itunes on January 1. FOREIGNER is donating all sales proceeds to Shriners Hospitals for Children. The Mick Jones composition I Want To Know What Love Is hit the top of the charts all over the world when it was released in 1984, and is FOREIGNER s biggest hit to date. It remains one of the band's best-known songs and is listed as one of Rolling Stone Magazine's greatest songs of all time. There is a spiritual undertone to I Want To Know What Love Is, and when you apply the lyrics to a cause like Shriners Hospitals for Children, it brings a whole new meaning to the song, said FOREIGNER lead guitarist and songwriter Mick Jones. It s hard to put a dollar amount on the value of this gift, but this is truly a monumental donation in our mind, said John McCabe, executive vice president of Shriners Hospitals for Children. Participating in the music video will be an invaluable experience for our patients. The fact that sales proceeds from the download of this song will go to Shriners Hospitals for Children is a wonderful bonus. FOREIGNER has been involved with Shriners Hospitals for 10 years, and we ve been looking for a way to make a more meaningful impact, said lead singer Kelly Hansen. The lyrics of this song really speak to the qualities we ve observed in the children here at Shriners Hospitals. The kids show this amazing resilience and happiness that really makes one think how powerful love is. About Shriners Hospitals for Children Since 1922, Shriners Hospitals for Children has provided pediatric specialty care to children with orthopaedic conditions, burns, spinal cord injuries, and cleft lip and palate. Shriners Hospitals has treated more than 1.3 million children from more than 180 countries over the last 95 years. Shriners Hospitals for Children has locations throughout the United States, Canada and Mexico, and is changing lives every day through innovative pediatric specialty care, world-class research and outstanding medical education. All care is provided regardless of the families ability to pay. Shriners Hospitals for Children is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization and relies on the generosity of donors. All donations are tax deductible to the fullest extent permitted by law. About FOREIGNER Responsible for some of rock and roll s most enduring anthems including Juke Box Hero, Cold As Ice, Hot Blooded, Waiting For A Girl Like You, Feels Like The First Time, Urgent, and the worldwide No. 1 hit, I Want To Know What Love Is, FOREIGNER continues to rock the charts more than 40 years into the game with massive airplay and continued Billboard Top 200 album success. FOREIGNER also features strongly in every category in Billboard s Greatest of All Time listing. The band is consistently in the Top 20 on classic rock radio. As a result of the depth of the catalogue, the band gets more airplay at the format than Eric Clapton, The Who, Fleetwood Mac, Bon Jovi, U2, Bad Company and many of their peers.
