We celebrated the holidays, made New Year s resolutions, and are on our way to pass through another year as we have a great 2019 year planned. The year for Tucson Lodge #4 began December 8th when the officers for 2019 were installed. On the day of the installation, we went right to work that evening with our biggest fundraiser for 2018/19 by utilizing the lodge s parking lot for parking cars during the Winterhaven Festival of Lights. Many of the brethren participated to make this a successful event. As we continue through the year, we have a range of activities planned. This group invites all, who want to know about Masonry, to ask questions, learn, and connect with Masons. We will continue to meet every Wednesday ay 7:00pm and be open for new and continuing visitors. On the path of improving ourselves in Masonry, we will meet and prepare for upcoming degrees as we strive to do well for the benefit of the candidates. Most importantly, we enjoy the brotherly love among the members and their willingness to serve and be available to make this a great year. I, therefore, extend an invitation on three different levels. First, if you are not a Mason and have questions about Masonry, come and visit the Masonic Conversation Group Wednesday nights. You might find answers to questions you have had for a long time. If you are a member, I encourage you to join us for the Masonic work we do. Learn new parts for our degrees and participate in the degree work. If you are a member, but have not come for a while, I encourage you to just come by and be in a meeting with us. If you are unsure about anything you can contact me or any of the officers. We will happily help you get reacquainted. The resolution for us, as a Lodge, is to grow membership, help individuals grow in their Masonic experience, and for the ones searching to find answers. 2 From The West Officers are elected by the members of the lodge, although a few are appointed by the Worshipful Master. In most lodges, the officers serve in their positions for one year. The names and duties of the officers are mostly taken from very old customs practiced by the medieval stonemasons guilds, where Freemasonry originated. In England in the 1400s, under the reign of King Edward III, local (or what we now call municipal) governments grew out of the merchant and craft industries of the towns. The guilds had lots of money and property, as well as organizational and administrative experience. Heads of the guilds became heads of town councils, mayors, sheriffs, and more. One of the ways a local official proclaimed his rank was by wearing a badge of office, or jewel, on a chain around his neck. This practice survives today. Masonic lodges do the same thing to identify their officers, carrying over this old guild tradition. Masonic jewels of office are symbolic (naturally). The Senior Warden sits in the west, symbolic of the setting sun, and assists the Worshipful Master in opening and closing the lodge. He is the second in command, like the vice president, and if the Master is unable to attend the meeting, he may open and conduct business. His ancient duties were to pay the Craft their wages and to handle disputes among the workers. These days, he s just a heartbeat away from the east, so his task is to support the Master and to prepare himself for that office for the following year. The Senior Warden and the Junior Warden often have small wooden columns on the pedestals in front of their positions. When the lodge is at work (during a meeting), the Senior Warden s column stands upright, and the Junior Warden s column is laid on its side, showing that the Senior Warden is now in charge of the Craftsmen. When the work is concluded and the lodge retires to refreshment, the Junior Warden s column is raised, and the Senior Warden s is laid down, showing that the Craftsmen are now under the supervision of the Junior Warden. The Senior Warden s jewel of office is the level, a stonemason s instrument used to check the level of horizontal surfaces. It symbolizes that all Masons meet on the level, without regard to social, political, or religious status. I am very excited about moving into the position of Senior Warden for Tucson Lodge #4 for the ensuing year. Thank you all for your trust and support in all my past as well as future endeavors within my masonic journey. I entered the 2018 year with much trepidation as, let s face it, Junior Warden is a daunting position. I have to admit that I thoroughly enjoyed the entire year. Junior Warden was a rite of passage for me; I learned, subdued my passions (to some extent), and grew personally and spiritually while serving. My love of this lodge and all my friends, brothers and families are precious to me. I believe I have somewhat of an idea of what is expected of me as your newly elected Senior Warden for the 2019 year and will continue to support this lodge with as much enthusiasms and integrity as I can muster. I also especially wish all the assigned and elected officers of this lodge much enjoyment and success through the coming year. As I did last year, I will close this message with this beautiful New Year prayer: Lord, At the beginning of this new year, I offer you my life. Come take my voice, may the words I speak be filled with encouragement and goodness. Come take my hands, may the work they create be generous and giving. Come take my feet, may the journeys I walk be led by your Spirit within. Come take my life Lord, for I love your goodness, your kindness and your leading. Happy New Year, -Rich Vaughn, Senior Warden LADIES PROGRAM As the new year gets underway, I want to encourage ladies to attend the monthly Stated Meeting dinners with their husbands. The plan this year is to provide informational services to women understand health, safety, financial, and community activities to help prepare us as we age and need more support for ourselves and our husbands. For the February s Stated Meeting, I have lined up two retired teachers, who provide information and services to support balance, improve cognitive functions and/or physical weakness resulting from strokes or other disabling diseases or injuries. Through therapeutic techniques, it helps people use both their left and right sides of their brain. -Joyce Meyer

3 From The South Greetings from the South, I first would like to say thank you to all the brethren for electing me to serve as your Junior Warden. We had a good year last year and I expect this year to be even better. We have several events occurring this year, starting with our float in the Rodeo Parade on February 21 st led by our Rodeo committee of Gene Wickey and Leigh Creighton. Remember to come out and support their efforts with volunteering to either adorn the wagon with the usual decorations and/or participate in walking the parade route. Following that we have the leadership conference on March 29 th and 30 th in Casa Grande and of course the Grand Communication on June 6 th and 7 th and the Double Tree Hotel on Alvernon Way between 22 nd street and Broadway in Tucson, Arizona. I will, along with my lady Mercedes, continue to provide the enjoyable monthly meals (maybe even nourishing) and will accept any and all help from volunteers for the breakfast which occur on the first Saturday of each month. Suggestions for improving the kitchen activities during the year are welcome. Please feel free to forward them to me via at. As always I would like to encourage all brethren that may not have been recently attending Lodge to come out and join us for a meal soon. In closing I would just like to say again that it s my honor to serve the lodge as your Junior Warden and will do my best to carry on the traditions of my predecessors who came before me.
