2 Hintlesham & Chattisham Community Hall To book the Hall or Meeting Room phone Richard on (9.00am 9.00pm only) Installation of our new benefice priest The installation of Reverend Jackson Crompton-Battersby as our new priest will take place at St Mary s Church, Kersey on Wednesday September 5th at 7.00 for 7.30pm. Everyone is welcome. So many syllables Where s Hintlesham? I asked one morning, I was sitting at the computer, I d just come back from teaching my lessons on Saturday morning at school. The children had been playing outside on one of those ridiculously cold and damp December days. They were sat round the fire with the dogs, cups of cocoa and faces that registered a look of excitement, why they wondered, are we going out? They had visions of somewhere bright and fun and with the possibility of a visit to the best place in their world - Pizza Hut. I don t get it myself, we ve never actually been to a Pizza Hut, we got close once stopping off at one at Nacton, starving hungry and thinking pizza might be healthier than Maccy D s. Anyway it was full, so we left but ever since the idea of going to Pizza Hut has been the prospect of a visit to a mythical country filled with unicorns and iphones that run all day on one battery charge. Why they asked, are we going somewhere exciting?! I looked at their expectant faces and knew I couldn t let them down, yes, we re going to look at a church!. Their faces froze is there a Pizza Hut there? asked Bosun the Dorgi and I wondered if the root cause of the tomato, cheese and dough bread obsession came from him and not the children. Scarves, coats, boots and an extra jumper each and we set off, the Dorgi wondering what To arrange a wedding, baptism or funeral please contact Jenny Cox Parish Priest: Rev d Jackson Crompton-Battersby rev@kind.church (01473) Facebook: Hintlesham and Chattisham Churches could be so amazing that humans would give up a place by the fire for it. It s not a church they shouted, Daddy s brought us to a car shop - a frequent thing I do, one of my many weaknesses is looking at cars and changing mine. Just look behind you. Hmmm, I thought, the lights are on, it s the middle of the afternoon, but I wonder if something s going on, better tread lightly, no one s supposed to know I m thinking of being the vicar here. Dogs were put back in the car and left to wonder that if they had evolved opposable thumbs and discovered fire, then it would be humans left in the boot of a car and dogs allowed to make the decision to go to Pizza Hut. We opened the door, a kind faced gentleman said are you here for the service? the family looked at me and I said I guess so. We were shown a seat - and wait for it - an actual real life honest-to-goodness heated heat, in a church! Heavens to Murgatroyd I love heated seats. What followed was an hour of thoughtful, funny, meaningful, spiritual, joyous community service, lead by Debs and Mary in a way that made me feel welcome and included and left me knowing that I was closer to the baby in the crib than I was before. What followed when we got back to the car was two reproachful faces and an acerbic comment about how much they d enjoyed not being curled up in front of the fire at home. Is that it? asked the Dorgi, are we going home. Not yet I said, we have to go look at the sister church in a place called Chattisham, but first I have to work out how to spell it for the sat nav, everything around here seems to have a lot of syllables. Never mind the phonology he muttered can we have pizza afterwards? Rev Jackson Crompton-Battersby 2

3 Friday 28th September 2.30pm until 4.30pm Hintlesham Community Hall Come and support Macmillan nurses and have a cup of tea and a piece of cake. Chattisham Church- Restoration Update We have not been able to continue with repairs in recent years, originally because structural engineers were monitoring the walls to measure how successful we had been in slowing down movement along the south side. Then some of the funds that we had available and earmarked for Chattisham were urgently required to pay VAT on repairs to the church roof in Hintlesham because it was leaking. Happily that work is now finished, the VAT will be returned, and so we can turn our attention again to Chattisham. Thanks to the huge efforts of the Friends and local generosity we do have around 30,000 but we will need more even just to carry out essential repairs. Grants might be available, but they are usually easier to justify if the plans include ideas to use the church more than the current one hour a fortnight. We are fortunate to have a new vicar taking up his post in September, the next PCC meeting is in September too, and it would be really good to hear from all of you how you see the beautiful little church at Chattisham being restored and used more for the benefit of our community of two connected villages. We will be circulating questionnaires and plan to organise a meeting to gather views, but, in the meantime, please do or contact either of us with questions or suggestions. We hope to have an exciting vision for the church that we can all sign up to! Mark Walters/ Margaret Anderson mark@markwalters.eu and maeandra@gmail.com VILLAGE MEMORIAL The village war memorial has received a makeover in time for the 100th anniversary of the end of the Great War. Over recent years, the lettering had faded and the wording on the side facing the road was illegible. Missing letters have been replaced and all the inscriptions have been repainted. The work was funded by the Parish Council. Pictures of the restored memorial were posted on Facebook and spotted in Australia by a great niece of Clarence Wilkinson, who died in Details and stories about the men listed on the memorial are at 3
