4 The Vicar s Letter October 2013 Dear Friends, I was sad to hear about the death of the poet Seamus Heaney at the end of August. I find many modern poets incomprehensible but, not only can I understand the poetry of Seamus Heaney I also find it down to earth and relevant to life. He wrote about ordinary things that we can all identify with. In 1995 he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature and the citation for the award sums up his appeal to me and many other readers. He wrote, works of lyrical beauty and ethical depth, which exalt everyday miracles and the living past" In 2010 Heaney suffered a stroke and was seriously ill for some time. He wrote a poem about this experience which is really a tribute to all the people who supported him and helped him through his illness. It is called Miracle and I wonder if you can recognise the New Testament passage it is based upon. Not the one who takes up his bed and walks But the ones who have known him all along And carry him in - Their shoulders numb, the ache and stoop deeplocked In their backs, the stretcher handles Slippery with sweat. And no let-up Until he's strapped on tight, made tiltable And raised to the tiled roof, then lowered for healing. Be mindful of them as they stand and wait For the burn of the paid-out ropes to cool, Their slight lightheadedness and incredulity To pass, those ones who had known him all along. (Human Chain, 'Miracle' by Seamus Heaney)
5 The New Testament passage is the account of the healing of the paralysed man Mark 2:1-12, but the focus of the poem is not the man who was healed by Jesus. Heaney s poem pays tribute to the friends who were not daunted by the problems of bringing the sick man to Jesus. When the way was barred by the crowds they carried the stretcher up onto the roof of the house, made a hole and lowered their friend down to where Jesus stood. The poem highlights how difficult this must have been; Their shoulders numb, the ache and stoop deeplocked in their backs, the stretcher handles slippery with sweat. And no let up. And when they had achieved their goal all they could do was stand and wait, looking down from above to see what would happen. Heaney asks us to be mindful of them. As I said Seamus Heaney wrote this poem as a tribute to those who had cared for him during his illness. We can all identify with it because we have been in the position of having to rely on the care of others and we all know people who look after the elderly, the sick, the dying, the bereaved and the lonely. This poem is about those who care and it exhorts us to be mindful of them. So, will you take a moment today to remember all the people you know who care for someone else. They may be professionals or they may be people who care for a loved one at home. All make sacrifices and are selfless in what they do. They are often tired out and weary and, sadly, they are often unappreciated. Remember them, give thanks to God for them and ask him to strengthen and encourage them. And if you are a carer, look again at the account of the healing of the paralysed man, where Mark tells us that the men on the roof did not go unnoticed by Jesus; When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, Son, your sins are forgiven. (verse 5) In the same way, nothing you do for those who need you goes unnoticed by him. With love and prayers, Tony.
