1 We believe we are called by God to be an inclusive Christian community, committed to justice, learning, service and care. Blackwood Uniting Church More than a Sunday Church Week of 6 th October 2017 ~ Service on Sunday 8 th October :15am & 11am Wes Bray Worship Leaders: Peter Cranwell / Bev Eccleston Lectionary readings 8 th October (Pentecost 18) Exo 20:1-4, 7-9, Ps 19 Phil 3:4b -14 Mt 21:33-46 Next week 15 th October Pentecost 19 Preacher 9:15 & 11am Lynona Hawkins Worship 9:15am John Whitbread & 11am Jan Wiseman Reflections on the Reading Reading: Exodus 20: 1 4, 7-9, / Matthew 21: There are some weeks when the lectionary readings present the preacher with problems. This week is a good example. The Old Testament reading is the ten commandments. The problem presented for the preacher is what to do with this well-known passage. Is the preacher assuming too much when they assume that the passage is well known? Perhaps it is time for a challenge. Put the newssheet down, pick up pen and paper and try to write down the ten commandments. Now open a bible to Exodus 20 and see how many you got correct. A well-known passage of scripture presents the following problem, what does the preacher say that has not already been said many times. In the case of the ten commandments how does the preacher do justice to the words without preaching ten sermons? The New Testament reading presents a different problem. It is a parable which in some ways is difficult to relate with in our 21 st Century lifestyle. Look at the reading before Sunday and see what the reading says to you. Perhaps the secret of dealing with these passages of scripture involves combining them. The ten commandments provide us with guidelines about how we are to live. The Gospel reminds us that there are some people who ignore the guidelines. The challenge for us as individuals is to not take the familiar for granted and start to ignore it. Wes Bray
2 This Week Phyllis Mitchell s Memorial Community help is needed for the Memorial Service being held on Saturday, 21 st October. Tickets are available to buy now and can be found in the office. BUC Events Occasional Series Our last Spirituality Series for the year is on Sunday, 15 th October from 5-7pm. C3PO Women s Social Group C3PO Women s Social will meet for dinner after the Occasional Series, on Sunday 15th October around Café Montagna. Join us for dinner or just coffee & dessert. Contact details: mob: ; agnew05@bigpond.net.au Spring Garden Walk In May this year I led an informal walk around sections of the Mt Lofty Botanical Gardens (MLBG) to view some of the trees and plants in their Autumnal colours. Following this, it was suggested that I lead a similar walk in Spring. For those interested, the plan is to meet in the Lower Car Park at 10 am on either Tuesday 17 th or Wednesday 18 th October. This car park is accessed via the Crafers / Piccadilly Rd. If you could indicate by your first and second preferences, I will decide on the basis of the numbers and the weather forecast, the date for the walk. The selected date will be announced during Community Time and by , on Sunday 15 th. The walking distance would be about 2.5 km and involve some moderate slopes. We would follow parts of the MLBG guided walk for Spring and probably visit the nursery where annual and perennial plants for MLBG, Wittunga and ABG are propagated. It is suggested that we bring refreshments for morning tea (in the new gazebo overlooking the main lake) after the walk. This walk is in addition to the regular monthly walking group event. 4 BLACKWOOD ROUNDABOUT UPGRADE - PROPOSED CHANGES War Memorial will move from its present location to the park by Save-the -Children Op Shop PEDESTRIAN CROSSING refuge in median strip Left Turn SLIP LANE - too close to Church Present War Memorial Park eliminated CHURCH The planned upgrade will remove ALL of the present War Memorial park and bring traffic very close to the Church. The Church Property Committee believe the SLIP LANE should be moved further away from the Church - to reduce the impact of the changes on the Church to leave room for safe and appropriate pedestrian access between Main Road and Coromandel Parade (the paving adjacent to the Church is deemed to be inappropriate), If the Slip Lane was moved the path on the roundabout side of the Church garden could continue to be used to create a landscaped garden buffer for safety and to reduce traffic noise to maintain the aesthetics and some semblance of the green character of the area YOU ARE ENCOURAGED TO HAVE YOUR SAY PEDESTRIAN CROSSING refuge in median strip ATTEND ONE OF THE PUBLIC INFORMATION OPPORTUNITIES and TELL THE PROJECT TEAM REPRESENTATIVE THAT YOU BELIEVE THE UPGRADE PLAN NEEDS TO CHANGE That the Left Turn Slip Lane is a very intrusive way of solving the problem of Busses turning left That there needs to be more SPACE for gardens between the Church and the roundabout That there needs to be a larger SAFETY BUFFER FOR PEDESTRIANS That we need to retain the character of the area with trees and garden to soften the landscape PUBLIC PROJECT INFORMATION SESSIONS Department of Planning Transport and Infrstructure representaties with plans and information will be in the Blackwood Uniting Church Hall Tuesday the 3 rd October 1pm to 4pm and Thursday 12 th October 6pm to 9pm at Coles Shopping Centre next Friday the 6 th October from 1pm to 4pm at the Blackwood Library on Wednesday 11 th October from 2pm to 4pm
