6 Parish Development How do you envisage the future of the benefice? This group was formed in its present configuration in 2008 when the former Nevern group was divided up and Eglwyswrw was joined to what had been a group of three parishes (it then contained Llantwyd, closed in 2013). Since 2008 the group has worked well together. In common with the rest of the diocese, this grouping will become part of a Ministry Area in the near future. The Ministry Area concept relies on the training of Focal Ministers, lay and ordained, to serve and encourage particular churches. The Ministry Area to which this group will belong will also include the Cardigan, Maenordeifi and St Dogmaels groups. It is intended that the person appointed to Cilgerran will be one of two stipendiary priests in this Ministry Area, and will therefore have a strategic role in developing Focal Ministers in these parishes and throughout the Ministry Area. Weekday Services Give details of weekday services, including school assembly visits. Weekday services only during Easter and feast days. Assembly visits to Primary schools in Cilgerran and Eglwyswrw on a regular basis Sunday Services CHURCH Sunday 1 Sunday 2 Sunday 3 Sunday 4 Sunday 5 Cilgerran 11.00am 11.00am 11.00am 11.00am Joint benefice service Bridell Eglwyswrw 2.00pm 9.45am No service 9.45am Morning worship 2.00pm Afternoon worship 9.45am No service 9.45am Morning worship Joint benefice service Joint benefice service
7 Observations from Deanery Chapter Regarding the viability of the Group, and its potential contribution and position in relation to the ministry and mission aims of the Deanery. Please confine your comments to this box. The Chapter has discussed the structure and staffing of the eventual Ministry Area. The diocese plans to place two stipendiary clerics in this Ministry Area. One will be in cardigan, the largest and most centrally-placed community in the Area. But the Chapter believe that Cilgerran should be the other. It is a significant rural community with a church school. It should be a strategic centre for rural ministry and mission in the Ministry Area. Observations from the Archdeacon This group of parishes was served for nearly thirty years by one incumbent, whose death in office in 2012 left the parishes with a huge sense of loss. During 2013 the parishes were fortunate to have the ministry of a newly-retired cleric who served as an Interim Minister. Sadly, his own health deteriorated and he had to step down from this ministry. But the progress made during the months he was there indicated the potential for growth in these parishes under the right person. The right person for these parishes has to be ready to address challenges both immediate and longterm. In the immediate future there will be the pastoral and mission task of continuing the work done by their Interim Minister, rebuilding the spiritual life and confidence of these churches. There is also a major problem with the fabric of Cilgerran church, where the roof has been discovered to be in a poor condition. I have found on visits to the parish that there is a great willingness to engage the wider community in this restoration project, but the successful candidate for this post needs to be aware that they will have to give a good deal of attention to this project. In the longer term there will be the challenge of moving from a conventional parish to being part of a Ministry Area. This will entail, of course, being willing to work in a team. The priest-in-charge of Cilgerran will not lose pastoral oversight of that church. But he or she will need to identify and encourage new ministers Worship Leaders, Lay Readers, NSMs, Self-Supporting Local Ministers who can become Focal Ministers for particular congregations, as envisaged in the Diocesan Strategy. It will call for someone with vision, and an ability to enable the ministry of others. The Welsh language is widely used in these communities, and is the first language of a large part of the community. The ideal candidate should be able to use Welsh in a pastoral setting as well as in worship. But someone committed to learn would be very acceptable to the parish.
8 Person Profile Please write about the kind of cleric you would like to see appointed to your Group of churches, including an indication of educational background, churchmanship, particular personal gifts (e.g. preaching, pastoral care, interest in youth, etc.) We are not particularly concerned as to the type of cleric in terms of education and background, however we are a group of bilingual Churches, and would prefer a bilingual person, however it is not regarded as an obstacle to the application. The required attributes we would consider important can be summarised as follows The need for pastoral care Working the community Working with the two local primary schools Developing Church members as potential readers and worshipl leaders Sense of humour. Enthusiastic regarding fund raising, as we are fully aware that we cannot maintain our Churches without holding fundraising events. Group and Community Profile Please write a description of your Group and community which will indicate the condition, needs and traditions of the parishes your churches serve, and which will give some background information to prospective applicants. Please confine your comments to this box. The rectory is situated within the village of Cilgerran, within 100 yards of the Church and the local primary school. Cilgerran is on the banks of the river Teifi overlooking the Castle with nearby beaches and the Preseli mountains. The Pembrokeshire coastal path is within a few miles. The village has shops, post office, pubs and restaurants, with the market town of Cardigan nearby. Within the group there are two primary schools, in Cilgerran which is a Church School and Eglwyswrw. Both schools have close links with the Church, holding services and assemblies on a regular basis. Within both villages there are active groups of organizations such as Young Farmers Club Bowls club Clwb gwawr Community association Horticultural club Over 50 s club Ti a fi Ysgol Feithrin Welsh Society Language, heritage and history societies Walking groups Community councils Various evening classes Annual Eisteddfodau in schools Church ladies group Book club Cilgerran festive week Football club Youth club Drama group Yoga Special events include harvest services involving the community, together with concerts and other fundraising events. Details of all the Churches can be seen on the Church in Wales website.
