2 A MESSAGE FROM YOUR ALISA CHAPTER PRESIDENTS QUOTES FOR LIVING: Only a life lived for others is a life worthwhile -Albert Einstein- To handle yourself, use your heads; to handle others, use your heart. -Eleanor Roosevelt I am back!! I want to thank all of you for your good wishes. I survived my thyroid surgery, enjoyed my Grandson s graduation from American University and then took a well deserved vacation in Bar Harbor, Maine. I missed my Hadassah family and want to thank Claire and all of you for pitching in while I was sidelined. While I was away, I realized how much Hadassah means to me; not only a sense of fulfillment but a great new family. THANKS TO ALL OF YOU: 1-Program Committee for bringing Alan Brodman and his wonderful students to our meeting. (Sheila Farber, Bunny Bloom, Sherry Freedman and Fran Weinstein). 2-Special shout out to Marilyn Gerstein for another successful Card Party 3-The Membership Committee who held a very successful Get Acquainted Tea for new and prospective members.(ruth Sachs, Evey Rabinowitz, Marilyn Taffet & Sibley Hausler) 4- Stephanie Hunger for planning the wonderful QVC trip Hope you had a good time shiopping, Ladies! 5- All of You Who contribute and help each other behind the scenes to make all of our events successful!! HADASSAH HEALTH UPDATE: MELANOMA RESEARCH. Today we are seeing a revolution in the treatment of melanoma and the Hadassah Medical Organization is among the world leaders because we always believed that the immune system can combat cancer, says Dr. Michal Lotem, head of Hadassah s Center for Melanoma and Cancer Immunotherapy. Dr. Lotem developed a melanoma vaccine that she has been using to treat advanced cases of the disease for 16 years. In addition, Hadassah is engaged in pre-clinical studies with a new immune molecule that its researchers have identified and are examining for enhanced anti-cancer immunotherapy. This new compound is currently being tested on mice. This is why it is so critical that we keep the dollars flowing toward this wonderful work. Your time and efforts are paying off and if you haven t stepped forward to HELP in our efforts please let us know that want to volunteer TODAY. Hadassah needs YOU! GAIL REIFENBERG AND CLAIRE LAZAR---CO-PRESIDENTS The Jewish calendar (Lu-ach) Submitted by Phyllis Kundel; According to the calendar we use in daily life (solar), a day begins at midnight and ends the following midnight; but a Jewish day begins at sundown and ends the following sundown. This idea emanates from the Torah (The Book of Genesis), in which it states: and there was evening and there was morning, one day. Thus the Jewish calendar begins with the new month. There are 29 ½ days between one new month and the next. So Jewish months are 29 or 30 days long. It takes about 12 ½ cycles of the moon for the Earth to travel once around the sun, for one year to pass. If we used just a calendar of 12 lunar months, we would soon be out of rhythm with the seasons: we d be celebrating Passover in the winter and Chanukah in the summer! So- How do we reconcile our lunar calendar with the solar calendar? We have a Lunar Leap Year once every two or three years in which we add not a day, but an extra month! It comes after the month of Adar and is called Adar Sheni or 2 nd Adar. This system keeps the Lunar months and the solar years in the same rhythm. (The holiday of Purim, by the way, occurs during 2 nd Adar.) And as for the year itself, it is now 5778, traditionally the year since creation. 2
