2 QUOTES OF THE DAY A MESSAGE FROM YOUR ALISA CHAPTER PRESIDENTS When you reach the end of your rope, tie a knot in it and hang on. Franklin D. Roosevelt Do you want to know who you are? Don t Ask. Act! Action will delineate and define you. Thomas Jefferson Claire and I hope you and all those you hold dear enjoyed the High Holy Days and that all of us will enjoy a year coming up filled with Good Health, Happiness and Peace. We have some exciting events coming up in the next few months: Card party, trip to Mandir Hindu Temple, trip to NBC and Wine and Cheese Rosh Chodesh at Bernice Kernis home. Check your Save the Date listings in the bulletin for more information. Once again we want to thank Diane Altman and Marilyn Taffet for all their contributions to Alisa Chapter. They are tireless workers and will be honored at Myrtle Wreath Luncheon at Forsgate Country Club. In December, we will be celebrating Chanukah, which is a fun-filled holiday with nightly menorah lighting, special prayers and fried foods (latkes and jelly donuts and then a trip to Weight Watchers). Chanukah means dedication and is thus named because it celebrates the rededication of the Holy Temple. What a wonderful time to rededicate ourselves to Hadassah and continue being the WOMEN WHO DO. HADASSAH MEDICAL ORGANIZATION UPDATE: (What our $$$ support) Hadassah hospital surgeons insert a knee cartilage regrowing implant. This is part of a global multi-center clinical trial that is taking place in Israel, the U.S. and Europe to test a new coral-based implant Agili C developed by the Israeli startup Cartiheal Ltd. Once again Claire and I want to thank everyone for helping to make this a very successful year. A special thank you to our Vice Presidents of Membership, Ruth Sachs & Evey Rabinowitz for their years of service to our chapter. 3 Yom Teruah: Sounding the Alarm for Anti-Semitism. A sermon by Rabbi Angela W. Buchdahl A Brief Synopsis by Sheila Farber The following information is taken from the Rosh HaShanah sermon given by Rabbi Angela W. Buchdahl at Central Synagogue in New York. The sermon was entitled: Yom Teruah: Sounding the Alarm for Anti-Semitism. The entire sermon can be found at: Rabbi Buchdahl begins by mentioning a few virulently antisemitic individuals involved with our government: Russell Walker, Steve West, John Fitzgerald and Ilhan Omar. These people are real candidates who aspire to run our country. They make no attempt to hide their true feelings about the Jewish people, and it isn t pretty. The ADL has reported in a recent study that there is a near 60% increase in harassment, vandalism and assault of Jews and Jewish institutions in Other instances of blatant antisemitism have occurred during the last presidential election. Desecration of Jewish cemeteries, the Unite the Right march in Charlottesville, as well as vilification of pro-israel students on college campuses have also made the headlines. Opposition to Israel and any organization that supports Israel is being felt on college campuses, with groups refusing to partner with such Jewish organizations as ADL, Birthright and AIPAC on any topic. As you are all aware, the antisemitism problem has become part of the daily news in England, Germany and France. A dozen people have been murdered in France just because they were Jewish; Jeremy Corbyn, the Labour party leader in England, has likened Israel and its policies to Nazi Germany, and has called Zionism racism. 8,000 ordinary citizens recently joined an angry mob of neo-nazis in Germany indicating the normalization of anti-immigrant and antisemitic rhetoric. It is our obligation to become familiar with all that is current in our country, as well as the world at large. So, what do we need to do? First of all, I would suggest that you take the time to download the entire sermon, as I have only scratched the surface, and the depth of Rabbi Buchdahl s thoughts are deep and deeply disturbing. However, she does have suggestions on how we can identify with, and stand up for Israel and fight anti-semitism. Thanks to Ruth Goldstein for bringing this to our attention ABOUT ISRAEL Contrary to popular thought, most American Jews do NOT watch Israel in horror. To the contrary, polls confirm that American Jews' support for Israel remains at high levels. This is because Israel remains a shining example of a thriving, peace-seeking democracy, despite being under constant attack by its all too numerous anti-semitic enemies. It is because Israeli innovations, technology and largesse have been of incalculable benefit to the world at large. And it is because Israel -- the world's only Jewish state -- is the reborn homeland of the Jewish people after 2,000 years of exile, diaspora, persecution and genocide. Submitted by Arlene Lazar, incoming Zionist Affairs Chairperson 3

So, when planning our trip we were prepared with additional insurance.but we thank you..because of your support, Hadassah maintains hospitals in Israel and we received the help we needed when my husband fell. It was Friday evening, we were going to services when my husband tripped on the sidewalk outside our hotel. Within minutes an ambulance arrived..destination Hadassah Hospital. The fact that it was Shabbat didn t stop the doctors from quickly stopping the bleeding, running X-rays and a CAT scan and assuring me that no bones were broken - no concussion occurred. We found everyone to be efficient and caring. They quickly put our minds at ease. In a few hours we were back at our hotel. Our memories of our experience only heighten our knowledge that support of Hadassah should be an important part of our life. We hope (for us and you) to never be on the receiving end of the many services Hadassah provides, but it is a comfort to know that our efforts here make these services available for those in need. Our dollars do help. Once again, Ivan and I thank YOU..Your support of Hadassah enabled us to have help at our side when we needed it! Thank YOU..THANK YOU!!!! Lynda and Ivan Radowitz 6
