2 A MESSAGE FROM YOUR ALISA CHAPTER PRESIDENTS Quotes of the Month: People grow through experience if they meet life honestly and courageously. This is how character is built Eleanor Roosevelt Many people are afraid of the dark, but the real tragedy is those who are afraid of the light. ---Plato We hope you are surviving our North Pole weather!! Remember just a few more months and the trees will be budding and the flowers growing. We want to thank all the members of the Membership committee headed by Sebley Hausler who made the January Membership tea such a huge success. Thanks to Roberta Fachler,Phyllis Soffer and Sebley who made calls. Thanks to Tiby, Ella and Sheila who represented the Board and a special Thank You to Phyllis Soffer, our hostess. See the Membership article to get all the details. A special shout out to Diane Altman who once again had a very successful Mah Jongg card sale and has introduced us to a New Mah Jongg Purse. Thank You Marilyn Taffet once again for holding a wonderful Lunch Bunch at Zinna s Bistro. HADASSAH MEDICAL ORGANIZATION UPDATE: (What our $$$ support) Updates in HMO Research for Breast Cancer: HMO Sr.Oncologist, Dr. Aviad Zick and his team are examining circulating tumor DNA in patients blood to help identify the type of cancer present and appropriate treatment. HMO researchers pioneered a diagnostic regimen to prevent transmission of the BRCA mutation to the next generation. This breakthrough in invitro fertilization and pre-implantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) enables women who carry the mutation to have their embryos pre-screened. Professor Tamar Peretz, head of Hadassah s Sharett Institute of Oncology is working on diagnosing cancer through blood samples rather than invasive biopsies. Tiby and I wish you and your families a wonderful Purim and Passover season.there will be no meeting in February but we look forward to seeing you all in March for our meeting. 3 Contributing and supporting Hadassah is much more than supporting two hospitals in Jerusalem. This month we are highlighting.2019 Hadassah Accomplishments from National It's official. The numbers are in. Thanks to you, we've raised $2.75 million in response to our $1 million year-end challenge, far exceeding our goal! THANK YOU. By giving so generously in 2018, you joined us in advancing trailblazing medical treatments and research, treating one million patients, advocating for women's health equity, supporting young people in need in Israel, and transforming lives, one person at a time. Thanks to your generosity, we are now positioned for greater success in Here are some highlights of what we were able to accomplish in 2018, thanks to your support: Launching "360 of Healing," the Full Circle Campaign, to modernize the Round Building at the Hadassah Hospital Ein Kerem, enabling us to better meet the expanding needs of a growing, diverse Jerusalem Bringing humanitarian spinal surgery to Ethiopian children during a week-long medical mission Providing life-saving surgery to Syrian children suffering from serious congenital heart conditions at Hadassah Hospital Ein Kerem, as part of the IDF's Good Neighbor Program Inaugurating the Irma and Paul Milstein Heart Center at Hadassah Hospital Ein Kerem, which makes use of the world's most sophisticated cardiac technology and more than doubles the department's previous capacity to treat heart patients Playing a leading role in introducing a bipartisan bill in Congress on Holocaust education Re-opening Hadassah's Government Relations Office in Washington, DC, enabling us to better educate policymakers about the work of HMO and Hadassah's policy priorities, as well as magnifying our voice in Congress and federal agencies, and with partner organizations to help keep Israel strong Building on the success of the "Hadassah On Call: New Frontiers in Medicine" podcast, Hadassah launched "The Branch." While "Hadassah On Call" takes you behind the headlines to learn about our Hadassah doctors and specialists, patients and nurses, "The Branch" offers a glimpse into the everyday lives of Jews and Arabs in Israel as they forge meaningful relationships Marking 2018 as the fifth year that we awarded our "Leaders of Tomorrow Award for Young Women," with this year's winners receiving an all-expense paid trip to Israel to participate in the Young Judaea Machon program, which deepens the participants' connection to Israel Celebrating the participation of an Israeli team from Hadassah Neurim Youth Aliyah Village, mostly young immigrants from the former Soviet Union or Ukraine, at the FIRST Robotics Competition in Houston, making it all the way to the semifinals We could not have achieved any of this without you. Thank you. In 2019, we want to do even more please continue to play an important role in our shared success. The people of Israel and Jewish people in the United States and around the world are counting on all of us, today, and every day. 4 Conclusion of Carol Charen s Installation Presentation Abridged by Sheila Farber In the previous bulletin we discussed Carol Charen s talk about the history of Hadassah. Now, we will talk about the growth of the organization and its impact on Israel and the rest of the world. Hadassah has always serviced those in need of medical attention, both Arab and Jew. As a result of the demands for excellent health care, Hadassah embarked on a $363 Million dollar project of building a new 19 story tower, with 5 floors below ground, fully functional as operating rooms, able to withstand chemical and biological warfare. This, the Sarah Wetsman Davidson Tower, has reached new heights in medical care, putting it on a par with leading institutions in the U.S., such as Mayo Clinic, Mt. Sinai, Mass. General, Johns Hopkins and Cleveland Clinic. Strong collaborations with the above mentioned hospitals has seen many breakthroughs including: ALS- Hadassah has been in the forefront of working with stem cells from a patient s own bone marrow, when other prestigious hospitals wouldn t consider using stem cells. The trial used a method pioneered at Hadassah of injecting stem cells directly into the patients cerebrospinal fluid. Expanded trials are currently taking place in the US at Harvard and the Mayo Clinic. Close to 90% of ALS study patients showed improvement in respiration or motor function after treatment. 73% remained improved 6 months later. Additionally, a biomarker in the blood of ALS patients that can lead to a blood test to diagnose ALS and predict its onset was also discovered at Hadassah. We have already learned about Hadassah s building a state-of-the-arts facility and the advances made in the treatment of ALS. We will continue discussing other advances made by Hadassah Medical Organization (HMO). Clinical trials have been launched to test the effectiveness of treating Multiple Sclerosis (MS) using enhanced stem cells directly into the spinal fluid. The trial has already seen wheelchair-bound patients getting back on their own two feet. Three U.S. hospitals are currently working in partnership with Hadassah Medical Organization (HMO). HMO in conjunction with Hebrew University, has established the first interdisciplinary university-based autism centers in the Middle East. HMO is the only Level 1A Trauma unit in Jerusalem. They share their expertise with law enforcement and medical personnel from nations around the world. This knowledge of triage procedures and surgical We have been made aware of the impact that Hadassah Medical Organization has made in Israel and the world at large. By your support and contributions, the research that leads to curing diseases continues. HMO is the largest private employer in Jerusalem. It also keeps Jerusalem safe with its below ground operating rooms, that are essentially medical bomb shelters. Our goal now is 360% of Healing, the full circle campaign, which will comprise of nine floors with strengthened infrastructure to protect against earthquakes as well as conventional biological or chemical attacks. The following departments will be housed in these nine floors: Geriatrics, Hematology-oncology, Dermatology, Maternity and well baby care, ophthalmology and four floors dedicated to Internal medicine. With all that we have learned from Carol, it is up to us to carry on the good works of Hadassah Medical Organization. We are the Women Who Do and it is our responsibility to continue supporting HMO s research in the years ahead.. 4

8 All articles on this page were submitted by Arlene Lazar, our Zionist Affairs Chairperson. ABOUT ISRAEL In the good news department, this month, the 2017 record for tourists to Israel was surpassed by 3.6 visitors. The Ministry of Tourism expects that by the end of 2018, at least 4 million tourists will have visited the country! This new milestone follows an October that saw the highest number of incoming tourists registered in Israel in a single month: nearly half a million!! WOW!! Minister of Tourism Yariv Levin said an increase of tens of percentage points in incoming tourism over the past two years has placed Israel among the world's fastest growing countries in tourism. Europeans accounted for the majority of tourists to Israel in 2018, with the largest numbers coming from the Russian Federation, France, Germany, and the United Kingdom, according to the Central Bureau of Statistics. Among Asian countries, the highest number of tourists to Israel in 2018 came from China, with India in second place. Since January, the tourism industry is estimated to have contributed more than $4.8 billion to the Israeli economy. Isn't that wonderful??!!. ABOUT ISRAEL A LOOK BACK AT OPERATION GOOD NEIGHBOR; AN INCREDIBLE HUMANITARIAN STORY In February 2013 wounded Syrians approached the Syrian-Israeli border, looking for care. IDF troops brought them into Israel and provided them with medical treatment, informally beginning what would become Operation Good Neighbor. On September 13th the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) officially ended Operation Good Neighbor, Israel's unprecedented humanitarian operation in Syria. Over the past five and a half years, Israel transported more than 10,000 wounded Syrians to Israeli hospitals and field clinics as part of Operation Good Neighbor. In addition to treating thousands of injured Syrians at Israeli medical facilities, the IDF also delivered thousands of tons of humanitarian supplies. For Israel, a country that values human life, there was no question about providing this care -- to civilians and even to terrorists. It is our duty as members of the Medical Corps to treat the injured -- both the ally and the enemy. The treatment of any injured person who needs help, regardless of nationality or which side of the border they come from, stands above all, and this is who we are as a society REMEMBERING JEWISH HISTORY December 27, was the birthday of Poet Naphtali Herz Imber, who wrote "Hatikvah". "The Hope" was based on a poem written in Palestine in the 1880s by Imber, a Galician Jew. It became the official anthem of the Zionist movement in 1933 and later became Israel's national anthem. Hatikvah is about the undying hope of the Jewish people, through the 2,000 years of exile, that they would someday return to independence in their homeland. The poet Imber died in New York City in COMMUNITY OUTREACH GREAT NEWS!! We were able to deliver over 200 of the knit hats for the preemie babies at Hadassah Hospital!! Our greatest thanks to all who participated in this wonderful mitzvah -- Harriet Cohen (from Encore) and her daughter, who knitted most of the hats, as well as Lois Flamholz and those who contributed one, two or three hats.
