3 A MESSAGE FROM YOUR ALISA CHAPTER PRESIDENT Where has time gone? It seems as if it was yesterday that we celebrated the end of Shortly we will celebrate Rosh HaShanah and Yom Kippur. Despite all the turmoil in the world, medical research continues. Hadassah continues to be a vital partner for many new projects. More than ever our involvement is important. Thank you to all of our volunteers that help make the Alisa Chapter succeed. Claire Lazar Hadassah began as a small mission offering emergency care to infants and mothers in pre-state Israel. Its first act was to collect money and send two nurses to Palestine in 1913 to provide pasteurized milk, and work to eradicate trachoma, an easily cured eye disease that was robbing thousands of sight. Hadassah Medical Organization has flourished over the century, evolving into two world-class medical and research centers in Jerusalem. By 1918, Hadassah had sent an entire medical unit, comprised of 45 doctors, nurses, dentists and sanitary workers, to bring American-style medical care to the Middle East. From these early efforts, the beginning of the Israeli healthcare system developed. Today it includes some of the world s leading research and treatment hospitals and schools of medicine and nursing. At the dawn of the Holocaust in Europe, in the 1930 s, Henrietta Szold and a German colleague organized the rescue of thousands of Jewish children to safety in Palestine through Youth Aliyah. She met every boat as it arrived. Hadassah still supports Youth Aliyah villages for at-risk children in Israel. Today, with 330,000 members, Associates and supporters, Hadassah remains committed to Jewish continuity. It is continuing to build a better world through medicine and healthcare, advocacy, and communities of women. Bringing advanced medical care to all, regardless of race, ethnicity or nationality, earned Hadassah a nomination for a Nobel Peace Prize. Hadassah also contributes its medical and social expertise as a member of the U.N. Economic and Social Council, as a nongovernmental organization. In 2012 Hadassah, the Women s Zionist Organization of America, celebrated its centennial in Israel. Not long before her death, when a sculptor was creating a bust of Henrietta Szold, she asked him to make my eyes look to the future. Henrietta Szold is a testament to what one person, one organization, and one vision can accomplish. Joanne Ferstan Claire Lazar Myrtle Wreath Every year at this time Hadassah chapters across the country recognize the unique voice of Life Members. Their commitment to the Jewish people and Israel exemplify the Hadassah woman. This year we will be honoring Marilyn Gerstein and Ruth Sachs. In addition to their being recognized at the Region Luncheon on October 29 th (see flyer page 11 to attend), our chapter will also be acknowledging Marilyn and Ruth at our Membership Appreciation evening on Monday, October 16, See flyer on page 10 for membership appreciation event. 4 Hadassah --COMMUNITY OUTREACH UPDATE How wonderful -- the brother of a GW resident recently delivered about 50 knitted preemie caps to Hadassah Hospital, and we received the following note from Israel: Yes, we have received them. Very pretty Alan delivered them. They will be happily distributed. Many thanks. And many thanks to all the knitters, especially HARRIET COHEN (of Encore) and LOIS FLAMHOLZ (of GW), who just keep them coming. Todah rabah to all!! Of course, the need for the black knitted caps for the Israeli (Lone) soldiers is ongoing. If you would like to help in this endeavor (or the preemie caps), please call Arlene Lazar ( ) to get the knitting instructions. Anyone going to Israel, or knowing of someone going, who can deliver the hats, please let Arlene know. Thanks! Submitted by Arlene Lazar Book and Author Luncheon Alisa Chapter of Hadassah presented a Book & Author Luncheon fund-raising event on July 19 th at B nai Tikvah Temple in North Brunswick. The event was chaired by Rita Pearlman, Judy Bauer, Gail Shinberg and Ruth Goldstein. There were 114 women in attendance. The speaker was Andrew Kane, author of Rabbi, Rabbi, Joshua: A Brooklyn Tale and The Night, The Day. Prior to the luncheon the women were able to shop at the jewelry boutiques and purchase copies of Mr. Kane s novels. There was a book signing afterwards. A portion of the luncheon cost, sales of books and jewelry, will go to Hadassah. It was a very successful event. Submitted by Rita Pearlman THE WOMEN OF HADASSAH ARE VERY SPECIAL Hadassah women are incredible! Yes they raise money for one of the best hospitals in the world - Hadassah Hospital in Israel. Yes they raise money to help children at risk and to give funding to Hadassah College and so much more, but let me tell you about our Hadassah ladies as wonderful caring women. Just before the last few women left after July's monthly meeting, one of our members suddenly fell. She could not explain what had happened, suddenly she was on the floor bleeding. Two of our ladies, both past presidents of Alisa Chapter, Bunny Bloom and Sheila Farber, went into action. They contacted EMS to take the woman who had fallen to the hospital, made contact with the woman's daughter to meet her there, and found an ice pack in the freezer which they used to stop the bleeding. They never left her side for a moment until she left with the EMS truck. And no, neither of them had ever been nurses. The patient is doing well and both of our caring ladies will be even dearer to us. Submitted by Rhoda Juskow 4
