3 EVENTS AND MEETINGS SHOFAR page 3 Program Vice Presidents Beth Hoffman and Linda LIdor Notice anything missing? A simcha or sorrow? That s because for years I have been begging for reporters from the community and I can t keep guessing about what s going on in your life, nor trying to figure out who is a member. It is your responsibility to keep me informed so I can share with the Hadassah community. Congratulations to: Judi Oshinsky on the birth of grandson Ari Henry Oshinsky Abramson Joan Bramson on the birth of a great grandson, Ami Noam Herrmann Coming Attractions November 15 program will be at the home of Beth Hoffman, 19 Autumn Land, East Brunswick.. Continuing our series of " Growing Up Anywhere but Brooklyn," Michelle Cheslow will discuss growing up Jewish in South Africa. RSVP to Beth at December 5, 2018 at 7:30. Wine and Design Chanukah Party. Amazingly Creative Carol Goldberg leads us in making a Chanukah gift as we drink wine and eat latkes. February 12, 2019 Never to Be Forgotten: Preserving the Memory and Stories of Those Lost in Pogroms 7:30 pm at Temple Bnai Shalom Alan Bernstein is a member of a landsmenschaft group, an immigrant benevolent organziation common until the 30's. His group is dedicated to the memory of Jews who perished in pogroms in the town of Felshtin through the document of family stories and oral histories of survivors. His group is also interested in the intergenerational transmission of trauma. Apr. 23, :30 An 80 year Perspective from Two Childhood Survivors of Kristallnacht East Brunswick residents Eugene and Ruth Gottleib, both child survivors of Kristallnacht, discuss their perspective and experiences. As immigrants to the US, they had to absorb the revelations that family members had been lost, as well as adjust to a new country with its language and culture. Eugene Gottlieb, author of From a Wine Barrel and Chicken Coops to Silicon on Sapphire shares the story of hiding in a wine barrel during Kristalnacht, immigrating to Woodbine, NJ, a community that had welcomed immigrants since the 1800s, where he was raised on a poultry farm, and ultimately became a scientist. Dr. Gottlieb will also discuss some of the ramifications of Kristallnacht. His wife, Ruth Heilbronn Gottlieb, author of Once We Had a Country retells her experience of the Nazis breaking into her home during the first night of Kristallnacht and terrorizing her and her mother. She and her mother then immigrated to the US to join her father. The message from Ruth s book is especially meaningful for children displaced by catastrophe who must adjust to new lives without knowing the language or culture. Ruth taught in the East Brunswick school system for many years.

5 Education Vice Presidents: Dian Perkel and Michelle Silver Taub Center for Social Politics and ANU Receive First Time Grants SHOFAR Page 5 The Hadassah Foundation, which invests in social change to empower girls and women in Israel and the United States, announces $330,000 in grants to twenty Israeli organizations that enhance economic opportunities for women in Israel, according to Julie Morris, Chair of The Hadassah Foundation, now in its 18th year of grant giving. First time grantees ANU received $25,000 to provide strategic and technological tools to the members of the Women s Activist Forum to help them run more effective social and advocacy campaigns. The Taub Center for Social Policy Studies in Israel received $15,000 to write a report that will focus on the differences in women s and men s retirement income in Israel in comparison to other countries, and how this issue, alongside growing life expectancy, may impact the well being of elderly women in Israel. In addition to the two first time grantees, the Foundation also awarded sustaining grants for the sixth consecutive year to long term grantees that have played a particularly critical role in promoting the economic security of women in Israel: The Center for Women s Justice; Economic Empowerment for Women; Itach Maaki Women Lawyers for Social Justice; and The Ruth and Emmanuel Rackman Center at Bar Ilan University. Hadassah Foundation Chair Julie Morris states: Our grantees are making a real difference in the lives of Israeli women, enabling them to become more economically secure, advocating for their rights, and championing their voice in the public sphere.
