2 P AGE 2 V OLUME 15, I SSUE 3 Hadassah Heroines Are you a Hadassah Heroine??? The Hadassah Heroines Program is a commitment of $100 a year for 5 years. The donation is used to support Hadassah s many projects both here and in Israel. Our Potomac chapter started to participate in this program 5 years ago and we now have 47 members. You can recognize us by the lovely H/H pin that we wear. For those of you who are coming down the home stretch ( the 5 th year), we are urging you to continue your support of Hadassah. We have designed a beautiful new pin for you to wear. Our goal is for each and every member of our Potomac Chapter to pledge her support and become a HADASSAH HEROINE. Please contact Amy Rubin, arubin2@cox.net, and tell her that you will become a Heroine. H A Hadassah Heroine makes a commitment of $100.00/year for five years. Each Hadassah Heroine will receive a pin for making this pledge. Name: Address: City/State/Zip: Telephone no: ( ) Each payment will be considered a donation to Hadassah, the Women s Zionist Organization of America, Inc. to support our work in healing, teaching and research. Please contact AMY RUBIN, arubin2@cox.net, and tell her you want to be a heroine too.
3 P OTOMAC P OSTINGS P AGE 3 Greeting Cards and Certificates Available! Sue Benezra suebenezra@gmail.com This is the season of Thanksgiving when we reflect on our bounties and rejoice with family and friends. Hadassah is also thankful for your continued support of projects to help the State of Israel and Israel s children, forests, and medical research. Show that special someone how much you care by making a donation to Hadassah in their honor. Your donation makes the honoree feel good and helps others. Don t think of it as just a certificate, instead think of it as a tree planted in the forest, a piece of medical equipment, a safe haven for a youth at risk, books for the library and many other worthwhile causes. In these difficult economic times you can get double your return with a gift to Hadassah and the special people in your life. Certificates are available in denominations of $10, $18, $25, $36, $50, $100 on up. You can view them on line at All contributions are tax deductible. Training Wheels Sarah Ragozin, Terri Buckman Bim bam. Bim bam Shabbat shalom - Hey! Training Wheels started our Shabbat celebration by singing songs and making challah. The kids named the ingredients used to make challah and learned how the dough was made. They kneaded the dough and got the challah ready for baking by braiding or forming fun shapes out of the dough. We baked their challah loaves for a delicious treat after class. The inspiring aroma spread throughout the Temple. The Shabbat Box set the stage for the rest of the class. The book is about a little boy who gets to take home a Shabbat Box from preschool -- a velvet covered shoe box with candlesticks, a kiddush cup, and fresh raisin challah rolls and encounters an adventure. The kids decorated their own Shabbat boxes filled with challah covers, candles and Kiddush cups to use on Friday night with their family. We recited the blessings over the wine and the challah and concluded the class with more songs. The next few classes celebrate Hanukkah on November 21, Tu B Shevat on January 23, and Kibbutz Israel Day on February 13.

7 P OTOMAC P OSTINGS P AGE 7 For more information contact: Beth Edelheit, bedelheit@gmail.com D I D Y O U K N O W? That in Hebrew Yom Hodu is Happy Thanksgiving? The Hebrew word for turkey is tarnegol hodu, often shortened to hodu. An interesting coincidence is that we eat turkey on Thanksgiving, and a common biblical Hebrew term for giving thanks is hodu. We see that phrase often in Tehilim (Psalms), and a related verse in Divrei Ha Yamim I 16:8, Hodu la kiru bishmo hodinu ba amim abilotav, Give thanks to God, declare His name, make His acts known among the nations. Hodu is also the Biblical name for India, appearing once in the first verse of Esther. The name derives from the Persian word Hindu, but the nun dropped out in Hebrew. This is also the name for the bird in many European languages Russian indiuk, Polish indyk, French dinde, and Yiddish indik. The word for turkey is also credited to Luis de Torres, the interpreter on Columbus expedition. Luis de Torres, a Jew baptized shortly before Columbus fleet discovered a large wild bird with a head and body very similar to the peacock. de Torres, with his background of Biblical Hebrew but poor ornithological knowledge, called this bird a tukki, which over the centuries has been corrupted into our turkey.
