5 Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur supervised quality programming for children starting at 10:30 AM. Children of all ages are welcome! Please RSVP to the shul office or Yom Kippur Observance According to Jewish Law, we do not wear leather shoes on Yom Kippur. All adults do not eat, drink or bathe on this holiest of days. It is also a sign of humility, in line with the sanctity of the day. Jewish Honors can only be given to those who abide by this commandment. TO ALL OF US IN THE CONGREGATION We are proud of our new members that have joined our Synagogue. We should continue to spread the word of the beauty of our community. We have so much to offer, how can they refuse. Once they come and begin to share our experiences, they ll make the right choice. Please continue to be a part of our membership committee and help us find new members for our shul family. LIFE CYCLES : Rabbi Eli and Rebbetzin Shira Biegeleisen on the birth of their son Yisroel Dov Sharon Goldberg on the engagement of her daughter Liza to Matan Zittoun Rabbi Daniel and Rebbetzin Mimi Mehlman on the Bar Mitzvah of their grandson Jonah, son of Aileen and Moshe Mehlman Barbara and Robert Neustadter on the Bar Mitzvah of their grandson Eric Aaron Roher, son of Janet and David Roher Gloria and Bert Pariser on the birth of a great-grandson to their grandchildren Esti and Asher Wrona Judy and Joel Schreiber on the birth of a great-grandson to their grandchildren Rachel and Yoni Fein : The Mackston, Mizrahi and Solomon Families on the passing of their husband, father and grandfather Judge Jack Mackston Our shul is proud of our Etz Chaim which graces the wall in our multi-purpose room. We are selling leaves with personalized inscriptions to commemorate your special occasions. Call our Shul office for more information. Remember our Sistergrams A nice way to celebrate the Birthdays and Anniversaries of your friends is to have your name included on the Sistergrams we send for such occasions every month. Please call Gisella Harsanyi ( ) or Marlene London ( ) to be included.
6 Special Yom Tov Foods The special foods eaten during Rosh Hashanah are all quite symbolic. Perhaps the most well-known is an apple dipped in honey at the beginning of the Rosh Hashanah meal, right after eating Challah. Before eating the apple we recite the blessing for fruit, and then the following special prayer: "Yehi Ratzon Milfanecha She'Techadeish Aleinu Shanah Tovah U'Metukah" ("May it be Your will to renew for us a good and sweet year"). As with the apple dip, the honey represents the sweet new year we desire, so we also dip our challah in honey. Furthermore, there is a custom to eat round challas, sometimes with raisins to increase the sweetness. The idea of something round is that of completeness. We want our year to be wholesome, round and sweet. People also eat fish during the meal since fish represent multiplicity and we ask to be blessed to have children as numerous as the fish in the sea. Fish are also only able to survive within water, and the water is an allusion to the Torah which we refer to as the living waters. Therefore, as we eat fish we are reminded that we too should live only through the Torah and like a fish never closes its eyes, so our eyes should always be open to the miracles that surround us. New Fruit On the second night of Rosh Hashanah, we eat a "new fruit" meaning, a fruit that has recently come into season but that we have not yet had the opportunity to eat. When we eat this new fruit, we say the Shehechiyanu blessing thanking God for keeping us alive and bringing us to this season. This ritual reminds us to appreciate the fruits of the earth and being alive to enjoy them, and there is an Halachic reason as well. A pomegranate is often used as this new fruit. In the Bible, the Land of Israel is praised for its pomegranates. It is also said that this fruit contains 613 seeds just as there are 613 Mitzvot. Another reason given for blessing and eating pomegranate on Rosh HaShanah is that we wish that our good deeds in the ensuing year will be as plentiful as the seeds of the pomegranate.
