2 A MESSAGE FROM YOUR ALISA CHAPTER PRESIDENT, To The Women Who Do, As you may know, during our President s first short visit to Israel, Melania Trump made time to meet with Sara Netanyahu to visit Hadassah Hospital. When Israel wants to show the quality of its hospitals, Hadassah is chosen for the caliber of its doctors, the advances in medical research, and the coexistence of its Arab/Israeli staff. The two First Ladies were given a tour of Hadassah Hospital by our National President Ellen Herskin and HMO Director General Professor Zeev Rotstein. After the tour, the women had the opportunity to meet with a representative group of doctors and nurses, and then visit with children who are patients in the hospital. One of the areas of research development being carried out at Hadassah Hospital is melanoma - the most dangerous form of skin cancer. Recently a patient with stage 4 metastatic melanoma was treated, and today he is disease free. With summer fast approaching, we need to be especially careful to limit our time in the sun, since 86% of melanoma cases can be attributed to exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation. The risk for melanoma doubles after more than five sunburns. Please make sure that you, your children and grandchildren take proper precautions when enjoying the summer s activities in the sun! Remember, in order to continue HMO s research, your contributions are necessary. With thanks for your participation and wishes for a happy and healthy summer. Sheila Farber Wilma Appel Todah Rabah Thank you to the Jewish Federation in the heart of New Jersey!! On May 24 th at the Regional Education Symposium, Alisa Chapter, as well as several other chapters, received a $750 donation from Federation stipulating that the money go towards Hadassah Medical Organization. We wish to express our gratitude to Federation and its benefactor for their support of the wonderful work of the Hadassah Hospital in Jerusalem. Todah Rabah, Joanne Ferstan 2

4 Please help us to continue operating as a dynamic exciting group of volunteers fulfilling Hadassah s mission of Tikkun Olam, healing the world. It is a nice way of meeting new people and making friends. The following committees are always looking for new members and new ideas: Program, Education, Fundraising, Trips, Membership, and Financial. Also, if you are comfortable with technology, particularly Excel, we would love to hear from you. To volunteer call: Joanne Ferstan, Executive VP at or jferstan12@comcast.net. Zionism in Modern Times In a recent issue we began our travels through history with God s promise of the land of Canaan to Abraham. We left off in 1909, when the first kibbutz was founded. During World War I, the Turks had sided with Germany, and when they lost, the land of Palestine went from Turkey to England. (The name Palestine was given to the area by the Romans: it means Philistines. Incidentally, the Philistines, who lived in Gaza, gave the Jews lots of trouble down through the ages, and Gaza still gives Israel grief!). In 1917, England gave the Jews the Balfour Declaration, which was its pledge to support a Jewish homeland in Palestine. However, they did little to stop anti-jewish riots. Throughout the 1930 s many Jews tried to immigrate to Palestine to escape persecution in Europe, but the British, caving in to Arab pressure, restricted immigration. Finally, In November, 1947, the United Nations voted to partition Palestine into both a Jewish and an Arab state. The Jews accepted this plan, which gave them less than half the land. The Arab leaders told their people to leave the land and return only to push the Israelis into the Mediterranean Sea. So - as Israel announced its Declaration of Independence, it was invaded by its five neighboring Arab states. On May 14, 1948, (the 5th of the Hebrew month Iyar), the political State of Israel was born. Despite overwhelming odds, Israel survived the wars of 1948, (War of Independence), 1956, 1967 and 1973, (Yom Kippur War). Eretz Yisrael (The Land Of Israel) is a living miracle! 2,000 years ago it was destroyed. 100 years ago it was just a dream. Today israel lives - so tiny, so brave, so old, and yet so young! Eretz Yisrael (The Land Of Israel) is a living miracle! Submitted by Phyllis Kundel 4
