2 QUOTES OF THE DAY A MESSAGE FROM YOUR ALISA CHAPTER PRESIDENTS The smallest act of kindness is worth more than the grandest intention -- Oscar Wilde You must not only aim right, but draw the bow with all your might -- Henry Thoreau Claire and I want to thank all our Vice Presidents, committee members and all of the other people who have so far made this a very successful year! In particular, we want to thank the Vice Presidents of Membership, Ruth Sachs and Evey Rabinowitz, and their committee members for our wonderful Membership Appreciation event. Fun was had by all. Another big shout out to Judy Gerstein and her entire tireless team for making the Fashion Show of 2018 a huge success. It was held at Forsgate Country Club and fashions were by Chicos. There are more exciting things planned in the next few months -- card party, Ice Cream social, Wine & Cheese Rosh Chodesh, trip to Mandir Hindu Temple in Robbinsville and more. Check the Save the Date page for further information. Although our backs are aching and our joints are creaking, our minds and spirits are strong. As this year is drawing to an end and the Holidays echo in a new beginning, please step forward and join our working committees that help make Alisa one of the most successful chapters in our region. Volunteering has positive benefits for the volunteer, as well as the organization served. We are looking forward to training the next group of volunteers so that we can carry on this great tradition of Hadassah: WE ARE THE WOMEN WHO DO! HADASSAH MEDICAL ORGANIZATION UPDATE: (What our $$$ support) Hadassah, internationally known for its excellence in medicine and wellness, believes that medicine can and should be a bridge of solidarity, healing and well-being for all peoples. Earlier this month, a team of Hadassah Medical Organization physicians performed surgery on children with cleft palates in Mexico. This is part of the continuing impact that Hadassah is having on health care in Mexico. Claire and I want to wish all of you and your families a Healthy and Happy New Year! Please reach out to your Fellow Hadassah members who are in need of your Physical and Spiritual Support. Myrtle Wreath GAIL REIFENBERG AND CLAIRE LAZAR---CO-PRESIDENTS 2018 The Myrtle Wreath is on our Life Membership pins, it signifies our commitment to the goals and mission of Hadassah. The keynote speaker on November 4 will be Amanda Berman, co-founder and President of the Zioness Movement. Her topic will be Empowering Women in Support of Israel. Happily, as has been widely reported, the 12 Thai soccer players and their coach, who were trapped in a cave for over two weeks by a flash flood, have been rescued. While the effort involved Thai special forces and experts from many countries, we make special note of the key role played by Israeli technology. Israeli Ambassador to Thailand Meir Shlomo visits flooded Thai cave site (Credit: Israeli Foreign Ministry) First responders were initially unable to coordinate their efforts because available communications systems didn t work in the underground caves. So Thai special forces contacted the local agent of the Israeli communications technology company Maxtech which is known for its cutting-edge technology and Maxtech training personnel soon went to Thailand to help, bringing with them 17 of the company s state-of-the-art emergency radio units. Israel21c reported that the technology behind these radio units took 10 years to develop and is exclusive to Maxtech. Lately, Thailand s relations with Israel have significantly warmed, with the former seeking to benefit from the long list of things Israel has to offer a developing country. This episode is but the latest indication that the trend of turning to Israel for help is, thank God, catching on. Jewish Press: (Submitted by Lillian Rich) 4

5 HADASSAH SCHOOL OF NURSING 100 th ANNIVERSARY Did you know that Hadassah s School of Nursing is celebrating its 100 birthday? It was a trip to pre-state Israel with her mother that changed Henrietta Szold s view of the world. She saw Jews living in camps without proper plumbing or sanitation. Horrified by the impact starvation and disease had on her people, she took action. Returning to America, she founded Hadassah, the Women's Zionist Organization of America in Henrietta called for practical Zionism, proactive work to help meet the health needs of Palestine's people. She motivated Jewish women to support a feet-on the-ground approach to end the deplorable conditions in pre-state Israel. Their original mission was Aruhat Bat Ami: the Healing of the Daughter of my People. Hadassah School of Nursing Pin (Israel,1948) The new organization's first act was to collect money and send two nurses to Palestine in They provided pasteurized milk to infants and new mothers, and began to eradicate trachoma, an easily cured eye disease. By 1918, Hadassah had sent an entire medical unit, comprised of 45 doctors, nurses, dentists and sanitary workers, to bring American-style medical care to the Middle East. From these early efforts the beginning of the Israeli healthcare system was developed. Today it includes some of the world's leading research and treatment hospitals, and schools of medicine and nursing. To celebrate this achievement Alisa Hadassah will be honoring ALL NURSES and the changes that have occurred in nursing over the past 100 years. We will meet on October 29 at the Monroe Senior Center. Unfortunately we are still working out the details they will be coming soon. Mark the date on your calendars. If you want to help plan and implement this event call Joanne Submitted by Joanne Ferstan KEEP YOUR EYE OUT FOR MORE INFORMATION ON OUR UPCOMING OCTOBER 29 th CELEBRATION!!! 5
