6 Selichot Events Selichot at Temple Shalom East Jerusalem/West Jerusalem Saturday, September 5, 2015 East Jerusalem/West Jerusalem 8 PM Coffee, Cake & Conversation 9:30 PM Candle-lit Selichot Service 10 PM featuring the music and liturgy of the High Holy Day Season A window beyond a world of war; building bridges through music and love. He did more for the Middle East peace process in eight days than Secretary of State John Kerry has done in two years. Is he a diplomat or religious leader? No, he s a singer-songwriter, and if no one else is going to try and heal the world, he will. So writes Vanity Fair about David Broza, the superstar Israeli musician whose vision brought about the collaborative Israeli- Palestinian album, East Jerusalem/West Jerusalem. The album is good the article goes on to say. The documentary about making the album is extraordinary. We will show this documentary as our introduction to Selichot this year at Temple Shalom. It is a film that brings a hint of hope in a world gone mad, and celebrates optimism and the world which might be, at a time of year when we are told to look both inward and ahead. Page 6

8 Temple Shalom 2015/5776 Yom Kippur Memorial Book July 2015 Dear Temple Shalom Family: Yom Kippur this year falls on Wednesday, September 23, Our new Book of Eternal Life will be available at the outset of the Yom Kippur Afternoon service, beginning at 4 PM. The Yizkor Memorial Service begins immediately after the Afternoon service, with no interruption, at approximately 5:15 PM. On the other side of this letter is the form for family names for the Book of Eternal Life. Please legibly print all names that you wish to appear, and list them in the order in which you wish them to appear. Replies must be received by July 31. The custom of reciting Yizkor on Yom Kippur is relatively new in Jewish life meaning it is only a thousand years old. The custom emerged out of blood and loss, in the Rhineland following the devastation of the early Crusades. What began as a personal family prayer soon spread to a communal setting. It was the Polish Jewish community that extended the recitation from Yom Kippur to the final day of the three festivals, Passover, Shavuot, and Sukkot. The word yizkor means remembrance, or, more literally, may he/she be remembered. The memory of those we have lost is, truly in our hands. May they live on in us, and through us, through our deeds and character, but also through acts of ritual and tradition. May their memories be a blessing. L shalom (In peace), $500 for new brass memorial plaque in sanctuary. Include name and death date of the decedent(s): Michael L. Feshbach Rabbi $18 per name is a suggested donation for each name in the memorial book. Your Name(s) (How you would like to be listed in the memorial book): phone Please include this form and your check when returning all High Holy Day information to the Temple. (Remember you may write a single check for everything.) If there are no changes to last year s listing, please check here Page 8
9 Brotherhood High Holy Day Greeting Card Send your wishes for a happy, healthy and prosperous new year to the entire Temple Shalom family. Please Print Family Information Names of Children Page 9
10 High Holy Day Prayer Books Machzor for the Days of Awe Temple Shalom will use this machzor at Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur service beginning this fall. The new machzor is an amazing tool with the potential to deepen, sharpen and refresh our sacred experience during the coming Days of Awe. It offers traditional words and creative reinterpretation, full transliteration, poetry, commentary and creative options. When purchasing the new prayer books, please consider donating to the Temple New Machzor Fund to help ensure that all of our worshipers have a book to use at High Holy Day services. To purchase your books, please visit or, if you prefer to pay by check, call the Temple Office or newmachzor@templeshalom.net with your order. Page 10 $45 per set
