It was practically a feeding frenzy this week, as Americans lined up across the nation to purchase their $2 Mega Millions lottery tickets before the Tuesday night drawing. 3 I Will Do A New Thing THE KING S GENEROSITY ow Solomon gave the queen of NSheba all she desired, whatever she asked, besides what Solomon had given her according to the royal generosity (1 Kings 10:13). Solomon gave the Queen of Sheba royal gifts according to his lavish practice, but additionally gave her everything that she asked for. If your kings who are evil know how to give generous gifts to their subjects, how much more is your Father in heaven willing and able to give generous gifts to you? (Matthew 7:11 [adapted]). Has the King of the universe given you generous gifts? For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life. The question is, what have you asked God to give you beyond His sacrificial generosity? What counsel does the Bible provide to guide us in our gift requests? The way to Zion Jeremiah 50:4, 5; the Lord for rain In the time of the latter rain Zechariah 10:1; wisdom, James 1:5; forgiveness, Psalm 86:5; mercy and salvation, Psalm 13:5; comfort, Psalm 71:21; delivery from trouble, Psalm 34:17, 18. Jesus passed by hundreds of people. What did they ask from Him: wine, healing, resurrection, salvation, how to pray? The lesson for us is that we have the opportunity to ask God for a gift. What is your request from Him: The gift of the Holy Spirit; The salvation of your family and neighbors; mercy and forgiveness for those who despitefully use you and persecute you? What is more important, the gifts under the tree or the gifts God wants to give you today? What generous gifts do you think He is planning to give you now and in eternity? Dennis Hollingsead Delight yourself also in the Lord, and He shall give you the desires of your heart. Whatever you ask in My name, that I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. Psalm 37:4; John 14:13 NKJV 3

4 GOd s Abundant Pantry GAP / Following the Footsteps of J.N. Andrews God s Abundant Pantry is ministering to the needs of AU graduate students who come to school to receive education and training to be better equipped to serve in God s vineyard. They have traveled here from all parts of the world with their families. They settle down in a strange place that has hot summers and cold snowy winters. Most must learn a new language, adapt to new customs and try to survive financially. Why would they do this to themselves and their families? Let me answer that question by sharing the story of one seminarian who I observed unloading his tools at the end of the day to store in his small apartment. It was obvious that he worked as a handyman to survive. One day I asked this student when he expected to graduate. His response was At the end of this year. I congratulated him and asked if he had a job lined up. He replied that he had accepted a call to be a volunteer associate pastor at an ethnic church in Chicago. This seminarian is retracing the footsteps of J. N. Andrews by coming to the USA to share the good news of the gospel to people from his home country who now live in Chicago. Your financial gifts are supporting God s Abundant Pantry. This ministry supplies supplemental food to future missionaries as they prepare here at Andrews University to work for God in all corners of the world. 5 Master Plan Of evangelism MPE / Soup for Students There s nothing like meeting the needs of people in practical ways. As we all know, finals week can be extremely stressful on our students. Walking through campus the week before finals it s easy to notice the effect it has on them. That s why I m really proud of our church. On Tuesday of finals week we held our third Soup for Students event. Over 32 pots of soup were brought in addition to salad, cookies, and peanut butter and jelly. At 6 pm students started going through the line in the Commons. They enjoyed a variety of homemade soup from minestrone, chili, lentil, potato, and potato cabbage. Those waiting in line were tempted with the smell of freshly baked chocolate chip cookies which disappeared very quickly. Volunteers helped keep the food tables stocked and enjoyed visiting with the students. A number of students came back for seconds and thirds. Take-out containers were furnished for those who couldn t stay or wanted to take soup home for a future meal. We heard a lot of thank you s and this is so good. In total we served close to 200 students. Those who helped that evening felt so blessed to help the students and to show them that their church loved and supported them. Students also helped to sign over 120 cards to encourage Adventist pastors who have been persecuted and arrested in Togo and Pakistan. Thank you for being a part and helping to communicate that their church loves them. By the time these students leave, they might not remember the specifics of all the programs they were a part of, but they will remember the feeling of being loved. Rodlie Ortiz PRAY That we will continue to show love to the students more Info Rodlie Ortiz / ortiz@pmchurch.org master plan of evangelism give to line 5 Year-end numbers are not available at this time and will be coming soon. 5

6 Christian Education RMES / Language Classes for All Grades Did you know that each student at Ruth Murdoch Elementary School, from 1st to 8th grade, takes a foreign language class every year? It s true! Students in 1st 6th grades take Spanish, and our Jr. High students must take two quarters of French, Spanish, or Korean. Our Korean Language and Culture class has even expanded over the past two years to offer an afterschool Korean Club. Students in grades 5 8 can participate to expand their knowledge of Korean culture through their senses. The Korean Club offers students the opportunity to taste traditional Korean food and learn traditional songs; and students will even prepare to participate in a community cultural event. The Korean Club ends the year with a trip to Chicago where they visit the consulate office and more! These foreign language and culture classes aren t just for fun. Oh no! They are very useful and practical. How many times do we wish we could communicate with others who do not speak our native language? Have you ever searched for someone who was bilingual to translate a conversation or sermon? RMES students are learning real skills that will prove helpful, if not necessary, time and again. Surely we must make the kids study more, or give them less free time than in other school systems. How do we possibly have time for all the extras, such as Spanish, PE, Art, Music, and worship? The difference at RMES is that God works it out for us. We praise God for our multicultural school, and for the opportunities He provides our students, like learning another language daily. Wendy Keough Thank God for the way He has blessed our school more Info David Waller / waller@andrews.edu Christian Education give to line 3 Year-end numbers are not available at this time and will be coming soon. 6

7 The Fourth Watch continued tickets in California (a Mega Millions participating state), with a waiting line so long that it stretched from the California store back across the border into Nevada. California sales accelerated to 25,000 tickets per minute! Never mind that the chance of picking the winning numbers was calculated at 1 in 259 million. With the last minute rush, the jackpot was driven up to the second highest in U.S. lottery history a cool $636 million (which could top $645 million when the final tally is made). And when America awakened on Wednesday morning the headlines announced there are two winners two still anonymous ticket holders who will split their $636 million jackpot and enjoy what a whole lot of Americans will consider a very merry Christmas. Actually, I m glad there was a winner because had there not been, some estimated the jackpot would have grown to $1 billion by the next Tuesday evening drawing, which would have been Christmas Eve. And the irony of a billion dollar gambling giveaway on the eve of the day when some of the world would be remembering the birth of Jesus would have been acutely embarrassing! I suppose had He been born in Caesar s palace in Rome, a billion dollar giveaway might make a semblance of sense. But for the God of the universe, whose wealth could be calculated as Croesus plus infinity, to walk away from it all, choosing rather to be born into abject poverty in a backyard cave for the solitary mission of saving this 7 race of lost children somehow the giddy hoopla over Mega Millions pales into absurdity. And so as you celebrate this Christmas, perhaps gathering with family and friends or perhaps reflecting all alone, I hope your heart and mine will turn from the holiday tinsel and bling to a midnight sky overhead. And there in the darkness let us bow down with quiet joy and fervent gratitude before this same Jesus, who though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor, so that you through his poverty might become rich (2 Corinthians 8:9) not just a meager jackpot, but rather the emptying of the whole treasury of heaven for us (Desire of Ages 57). O come, let us adore Him! Amen. Credit: istock

11 christmas program continued Christmas Scripture Luke 2:15-24 NIV / Dick & Lynn Bayley When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, Let s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about. So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger. When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child, and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them. But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart. The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things they had heard and seen, which were just as they had been told. When the time came for the purification rites required by the Law of Moses, Joseph and Mary took him to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord (as it is written in the Law of the Lord, Every firstborn male is to be consecrated to the Lord ), and to offer a sacrifice in keeping with what is said in the Law of the Lord: a pair of doves or two young pigeons. Christmas Music Interlude (from A Ceremony of Carols) / Benjamin Britten Christmas Homily Dwight K. Nelson How Much Longer? Waiting for the Christmas Consolation Appeal Here With Us / Jason Ingram, Ben Glover and Joy Williams Benediction Closing Voluntary IN DULCI JUBILO (In Sweet Jubilation) / Johann Sebastian Bach music alive Three exclamation marks in a title of four words for today s introit What is this exclaiming about? The title, a traditional Latin rendering that closely parallels the English Glory to God in the Highest, has several wonderful words worth emphasizing individually, although they far exceed anyone s ability to capture them musically. Gloria is a word rendered marvelously for voices, by many composers, although inevitably falling 11 short of its fervor and light. But we also have the reference to highest or in the height, rather lyrically and airily treated in the midsection of today s introit. Finally, any description of God in human language, musical or otherwise, must fall far short. Yet this word receives some resplendent emphasis in the introit s final section and is to be sung fervently! in the opening carol cycle.
