You could certainly draw that conclusion, given the findings released this week in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Science. Astronomers with data from NASA have for the first time calculated that our Milky Way galaxy is teeming with billions of planets that are about the size of Earth, [that] orbit stars just like our sun, and exist in the Goldilocks zone not too hot and not too cold for life (South Bend Tribune ). They have calculated that out of the 200 billion stars in the Milky Way, billion of them are like our sun. Of those sun-like stars, scientists estimate there are at least 8.8 billion of them with at least one Earth-size planet in orbit. Thus astronomers conclude there may be up to 11 billion planets able to sustain life like ours in this single galaxy! Geoffrey Marcy, a professor of astronomy at Berkeley, extrapolated Continued on 7
3 I Will Do A New Thing OATMEAL CREAM PIE The structure of an Oatmeal Cream Pie is two oatmeal cookies on either side of some sweet, creamy filling. We could talk about the sugar and fat content of the cream pie and whether or not it has any nutritional value. But when you eat one, it takes all three parts to truly experience the Oatmeal Cream Pie. As I was reading Isaiah 43 & 44 earlier this summer, I noticed that between the verses giving God s promise to do a new thing (Isaiah 43:19), and its description of pouring out His Spirit (Isaiah 44:3-5), sandwiched an important truth. Right in the middle between these promises appears a condition upon which the promises will be fulfilled. But you have not called upon Me, O Jacob; and you have been weary of Me, O Israel... you have burdened Me with your sins, you have wearied Me with your iniquities. I, even I, am He who blots out your transgressions for My own sake; and I will not remember your sins. Put Me in remembrance; let us contend together; state your case, that you may be acquitted (Isaiah 43:22, NKJV). Apparently, realization of the promise of the Holy Spirit rests upon our our heart s attitude toward God and our putting away of sin through our faith in His power to do so. He promises to put our sins out of His remembrance if we will only remember to tell Him our sins, and ask Him to remove them. Just like the Oatmeal Cream Pie, this process of getting right with God is surrounded by the promise of the Holy Spirit. The total package is necessary in order to completely experience the assurance of forgiveness, resulting in joy and inner peace that leads to witnessing for Him with power (Isaiah 43:1-12). Turn at my rebuke; Surely I will pour out my spirit on you; I will make my words known to you. Proverbs 1:23 NKJV Let us not only pray for the new thing that God has promised through His Holy Spirit, but for the necessary change in our hearts and minds towards our friends, relatives, and colleagues; that is only possible by spending time each day asking God for His power and grace to change us from within. 4 Student Aid Student Aid Fund / Taking Care of our Own Thank you for your continued support for Our Own children. As you will recall, Our Own refers to the children who worship with us each week. We want to provide the best for this next generation spiritually, physically, and mentally. The local public schools provide a good education physically and mentally, but the spiritual component is missing. This is where Christian education, as provided at Ruth Murdoch Elementary School and Andrews Academy, comes in. There are many parents in our community who long to enroll their children in our schools, but simply cannot afford it. There are others who could have their children there but choose not to for whatever reason. Then there are those who make great sacrifices to see that their children get this opportunity. Most parents can pay something toward their children s education, but that is not always the case. Both schools have some scholarship money available to help, and families also turn to you, the members of PMC. The funds from the schools, from the church, and from other generous benefactors keep Our Own in Christian education. You can play a vital role in this by giving regularly and generously to the Student Aid Fund. You will find a line so marked on your tithe and offering envelope, and if you give online, there is also a place on that form for Student Aid. Won t you help keep nearly 60 of Our Own children in Christian education for the 2013/2014 school year? We need your contributions to meet our $45,000 budget. Without this, we will not be able to make good on our commitments. Thank you for your help. 5 Master Plan Of evangelism MPE / This Is My Church! Every once in a while something happens where your only confession can be this: God did something. If you attended our recent series with Pastor David Asscherick, I think you ll agree with me. There I was on the front row on the last Friday night of the series. Just a few minutes after 7:30 PM, I received notice that the balcony was full, and so we opened the youth chapel, which was serving as an overflow room. About ten minutes after that, I received another notice that the youth chapel was full, and the early teen loft was opened as a second overflow room. At the end of his message, Pastor Asscherick made a powerful appeal, and challenged people to make a decision for Him. People were invited to bring their pray For those who made decisions for baptism more Info Rodlie Ortiz / ortiz@pmchurch.org response card to the front of the church and place it on the steps. It was a beautiful sight to see hundreds of people making a decision and coming to the front. It was clear that God was there. We had prepared by having ushers in place, printing and giving out invite cards, visiting students, but when God shows up in a special way, you have to acknowledge that He did this. We praise God for 58 decisions for baptism that were made. We re currently prepping to launch four new baptismal classes across campus. So what about you? What can you do to help encourage and foster the work that has happened? For one, we ask you to pray that those who made decisions would actually follow through. Secondly, we thank you for giving faithfully to the Master Plan of Evangelism. Without your support we would not be able to put on an evangelistic event like this one. If you ve never given to line 5, this is a great time to start. Thanks for being a part of the team. 6 Christian Education AA / A Bit of Heaven Andrews Academy, along with the 7th- and 8th-graders from Ruth Murdoch Elementary School, was blessed to hear Pastor David Asscherick, the presenter of AA s Fall Week of Prayer. The theme for the October event was The Kingdom of Heaven Is Like. To begin the week, student leaders interviewed Pastor Asscherick, finding out about his growing up years, his interests and conversion to Christ. This helped them to relate to the engaging speaker and listen to his clear and insightful thoughts on God s word. Pastor Asscherick helped us understand the Kingdom of Heaven, shared a teacher, He explained the mind-set of the Jewish people in Christ s day and noted that what Jesus said about this kingdom was very countercultural to that time. It is still countercultural. And Jesus preached that we don t get to enter God s Kingdom because we are awesome or have done incredible things. It s all because God is so awesome and generously offers to each of us this opportunity. PraY For the continued outpouring of God s Spirit on our students more Info Robert Overstreet / overstrr@andrews.edu Students hearts responded to Pastor Asscherick s vivid description of God s Kingdom and responded to his appeal during the closing presentation Friday morning. It was a powerful and meaningful sight to see hundreds of teens expressing their desire to follow God. One student commented, When one person can influence our spiritual walk with God as much as Pastor David Asscherick, you know that God hand-picked an angel to send to this community to touch the hearts of everyone that heard him speak! This has probably been one of the most spiritually powerful and influential weeks of my life. Another student said, I am so thankful to God for this amazing experience. 7 The Fourth Watch the findings across the open void of space, adding: With tens of billions of Earth-like planets in each galaxy [i.e., not just in our own galaxy], our entire universe must contain billions of billions of Earth-like planets ( planets_habitable/). Billions of billions? Please note, however, that while there may indeed by eleven billion other planets able to sustain life in the Milky Way, astronomers are not yet suggesting they have found life on any of these potential cousins of Earth. And yet it would no longer be so farfetched to suggest that we are not alone in our galaxy there may very well be other intelligent (more intelligent?) life forms out there. In fact the nearest sun-like star with an earth-size planet is only about 12 light years away and can be seen with the naked eye at night leading one British commentator to quip they re probably getting our TV programming from 2001 (perish the thought)! The ancient book of Job opens with a scene from the divine headquarters of the universe: Now there was a day when the sons of God [ heavenly beings NRSV] came to present themselves before the LORD (Job 1:6). Is it so implausible to find in this ancient line the suggestion that there are other inhabited planets in God s vast universe, and that here Job describes representatives of these Earth-like planets assembling in the throne room of the Creator? Such a notion is not quite as farfetched as it would have been a few weeks ago, is it? No wonder The Great Controversy observes: God s continued government included not only the inhabitants of heaven, but of all the worlds that He had created (497). Thus, if we re not alone and there are intelligent beings sharing our home galaxy with us, can you imagine the vested interest they have in the cosmic struggle between Light (Christ) and darkness (Satan) for the allegiance of this planet? If only one of the Shepherd s sheep is lost, imagine the intense concern of the ninetynine others. No wonder the story of Calvary the glorious narrative of the Creator Himself incarnating into our human family to rescue Earth from the savage dominion of the fallen rebel Satan will become the science and song of the universe one day when the enemy of all life is eradicated. Tens of billions of other planets? Can you imagine the Hallelujah chorus when the Family is reunited at His nailscarred feet! 7

9 call to worship Love is patient and kind, not jealous or boastful, not arrogant or rude; love does not insist on its own way. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never ends. Let us honor all who seek to manifest God s love in themselves as workers for Christ. Let us give God the glory and praise his holy name! the word Romans 12:9-21 NIV Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves. Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord. Share with the Lord s people who are in need. Practice hospitality. Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn. Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everyone. Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good. music alive It Is Well The cable message crackled Saved Alone across the Atlantic. In half an hour the Ville du Havre had sunk after impacting another ship. With it also sank to the depths Maggie, Tanetta, Annie and Bessie Spafford, the daughters of Horatio and Anna Spafford. Anna had been rescued and had landed in Wales, but not before surging waters ripped her baby from her arms and swept the child to her death. As Horatio joined Anna across the ocean, they visited evangelist Dwight L. Moody, who comforted them in their sorrow while noting their trust and confidence in God. Two years later, Horatio Spafford affirmed his faith in the words It Is Well With My Soul (hymn 530). Today, the Andrews Academy Concert Band plays David Holsinger s arrangement of the hymntune by Philip Bliss. 9
