Sweethearts, lovers? Mothers, fathers? Children, classmates? Pastors? (Oops pardon that Freudian slip.) Who gets more Valentine s cards than anybody else? Give up? Answer: teachers. It s true our beloved school teachers receive more cards than any other category of recipients. So all of you elementary education majors look what you have to look forward to! Actually retailers look forward to Valentine s Day, too. According to the National Retail Federation, total spending for this holiday (celebrated not only in this country, but also in Canada, Mexico, the United Kingdom, France, Italy, Denmark, and Australia) will reach a whopping $15.7 billion (with men spending nearly twice the 2 Continued on 7

OPERATING EXPENSES FELLOWSHIP DINNER MINISTRY / JOIN THE TEAM am so thankful that your church I offers this wonderful service to your visitors, is a message heard week after week by the teams who work together to provide delicious home-cooked meals to our guests. To the visitors who worship with the Pioneer congregation each week, the Visitor Fellowship meals are a welcome solution to what to do for lunch. This is a ministry in which we can all be involved. If you have not had the opportunity to join a team yet, there is a place for you. You don t have to be a fancy cook either. Many team members bring food that does not need preparation, and if the budget is tight there is still plenty you could do to help. The ministry is rewarding and it is fun getting to know other team members as you come together to prepare for the dinner, serve, socialize with guests, and clean up. Teams need all ages. High school and college students, singles, families, and mature adults all work together to make the ministry a success. Most teams serve a couple times a year. We also need volunteers who would like to be on a call list to help out with meals once or more per month. Please give the director a call or him your interest, and you can begin to enjoy this special ministry too. PRAY That people will join the team MORE INFO Bennett Chilson/ bennettc43@gmail.com OPERATING EXPENSES GIVE TO LINE 2 Proposed Goal $46,924 Received to-date $30,040 (Received to-date 2011) $23,611 As of January 28,

CHRISTIAN EDUCATION RMES / LEARNING EXPERIENCES Did you know that students learn in different ways? Some learn by hearing information, some by seeing it, and most learn through experience. That is why Ruth Murdoch Elementary School teachers are intentional about providing information to your students in various and often exciting ways. Learning about trees? Our students take a learning adventure through the arboretum at Andrews. Learning about gardening? RMES students can visit greenhouses and plant vegetable gardens. What about livestock? We take our students on a fact-finding trip to the Andrews Dairy. History? Students visit various museums and historical exhibits. Learning about communities? We invite community leaders as guest speakers at our monthly assemblies and for other class activities. Our guests share with our students what makes a community, what our community has to offer, and how we can be a part of a successful community. When Mrs. Park s 6th grade class studied the human body, her students traced an outline of several human bodies, posted them in the hallway, and colorfully and creatively transformed a blank outline into a realistic system of the human body. The students learned by hearing information, seeing visual aids, and by creating a life-sized replica an extremely thorough learning experience. PRAY That our students will continue to have unique learning opportunities MORE INFO David Waller / waller@andrews.edu CHRISTIAN EDUCATION GIVE TO LINE 3 Proposed Goal $18,084 Received to-date $9,091 (Received to-date 2011) $7,654 As of January 28,

MASTER PLAN OF EVANGELISM STREET MINISTRY / SHOWING CHRIST S LOVE This year I have the privilege of leading out in a ministry group called Street Ministry. We go in groups of two and three to different neighborhoods in Benton Harbor to meet and visit the residents. It means a lot to people when you come back and see them again and again. Our goal is to form meaningful relationships through which we may also extend the love that Christ has shown us. Partnering with God in ministry gets you deeply and richly involved in service. It isn t comfortable but is definitely worth it. Last Fall, some of the street ministry volunteers met an older gentleman who had been struggling with a host of problems including depression, homelessness and alcoholism. He was moved to tears as we prayed together and read from Psalm 31. After that day we have met with him at least once a week to talk, pray and read from scripture. In late October, he agreed to be admitted into a substance abuse treatment program so that he could be freed from his bondage to addiction. The people we meet and the problems they face are very real, but so is the trust and fellowship that is formed between us. PRAY That we all may stay close to Jesus MORE INFO Olivia Madakor / (509) oliviamadakor89@gmail.com MASTER PLAN OF EVANGELISM GIVE TO LINE 5 Proposed Goal $10,308 Received to-date $4,497 (Received to-date 2011) $4,081 As of January 28,

THE FOURTH WATCH amount as women)! Let s face it love is never cheap. One billion cards will be sent worldwide, making Valentine s Day second only to Christmas. $1.7 billion will be spent on flowers (200 million roses were produced for Valentine s Day last year). $1.5 billion on candy ($1 billion of which is for chocolate alone). Anybody surprised? But here s another love statistic to brood over: one. That s right one. Because that s the number of people in the upper room that fateful night who had love on His mind not love for a sweetheart or even for His closest friends, but a solitary love for this race of broken-down and broken-hearted. No flowers, no chocolates, no Cupid s arrow through the heart for Him just the form of a slave, stripped naked to the waist, stooped over twelve pairs of CONTINUED dusty feet with a basin of water and a towel. Now before the feast of the Passover, when Jesus knew that His hour had come that He should depart from this world to the Father, having loved His own who were in the world, He loved them to the end (John 13:1). He loved them to the end. Because that s the truth about the heart of God stopped not with Cupid s arrow but with a Roman lance. Stopped not by a lance but by love. To the very end. So that the end wouldn t have to be the end for the likes of you and me. So why wouldn t we love Him back? With all our hearts. To the end. Or until they stopped. For the One. 7

CALL TO WORSHIP Let us love our God with all our heart, with all our soul, with all our mind. Let us love our neighbors as ourselves. There is no other commandment greater than these. As God s people, we come together to do what God has commanded. THE WORD JOHN 13: NIV Jesus said, Now the Son of Man is glorified and God is glorified in him. If God is glorified in him, God will glorify the Son in himself, and will glorify him at once. My children, I will be with you only a little longer. You will look for me, and just as I told the Jews, so I tell you now: Where I am going, you cannot come. A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another. MUSIC ALIVE JESUS! WHAT A FRIEND FOR SINNERS he musical quality of his Tvoice stirred and yet quieted an audience. His words, clearly enunciated, could be heard without strain by an immense crowd (often 10,000), even when hushed to a quiet whisper. In these words a commentary from 1920 describes the author of the words of the stirring hymn, Jesus, What a Friend for Sinners (no. 187). In fact, author J. Wilbur Chapman was born at Richmond, Indiana, but in time became a widely-traveled evangelist. The melody of this hymn, HOLY MANNA, is widely known with several sets of words. An inspiring alternate set of words, God Who Stretched the Spangled Heavens, appears as no. 536 in the Seventh-day Adventist Hymnal. This title heads Dale Wood s organ setting, today s voluntary. 9

SPIRITUAL PARENTING MIND GAMES God is in a very serious battle with Satan for the control of our minds. Who s going to win the battle for your mind? For your child s or teen s mind? This is not a pretend battle; it s a real battle with consequences for eternity. We have to deliberately choose God s input. The default setting is Satan s input. We have to choose God s input every day, every hour, every minute, or our mind goes automatically to the default setting. Be careful! Watch out for attacks from the Devil, your great enemy. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for some victim to devour. Take a firm stand against him, and be strong in your faith 1 Peter 5:8,9 NLT. Only sometimes he doesn t roar like a lion - he purrs like a kitty. He feels so soft and loving we want to keep him around. Much later we realize he really is a roaring lion who snarls and wants to devour us. Satan makes his input easy to access and very alluring - almost irresistible. A small click and you re there. A few steps and you re there. A lingering look and you re there. Unfortunately, the labels don t say Addictive. They should. They don t say Trap. They should. The Addictive label really belongs on mind-altering movies and novels, soap operas, violent video games, pornographic sites, computer games, and many web sites - even social networking sites - as well as mindaltering drugs, including alcohol. Little by little Satan is conditioning people - children and adults, including Christians - to accept spiritism, Satanism, and the occult as normal, natural, and desirable aspects of life, even as important guides for how to live. Television, movies, games, books, and toys are full of these ideas. Last year a teacher of English as a second language in Europe told me she had to search very diligently to find textbooks that did not have images from spiritism on most pages. Satan has a purpose: To deceive everyone - even God s people - at the end of time (Matthew 24:24). Sometimes we don t recognize his tactics. We laugh and say, Oh, Harry Potter [or the current favorite] is an innocent children s story [or game or show]. No problem. All the kids are reading [seeing, playing] it. Precisely the issue. Everyone is being conditioned without realizing what is happening. Family conversation? What s that? All the kids and teens - maybe mom and dad too - have their heads buried in their computers or smart phones or other technology. Do you know what they re playing [watching, doing]? It s time to alert your children to the Devil s tactics and to help wean them off so much technology. It s time to alert the whole family to what God 14

says about what s important. It s time to have family conversation at the dinner table. It s time to establish standards for the use of technology. How can families do this? Some research-based suggestions from Pediatrics (Vol. 126, No. 1): Set family rules for screen time. Consider the ages of your children. Set family rules for appropriate activities online. Be specific about boundaries. Establish tech-free zones that ban the use of technology in certain places at home, such as the dinner table. Encourage conversation instead. Set a good example for your children - limit your own use of technology. Get the kids moving and move with them. Get involved in physical activities as a family. Encourage active free-time play and individual or group sports activities. Some other important suggestions recommended by professionals and used successfully by many families to manage the media: Do not have a wireless connection in your house. Instead, place the computer with the wired internet connection in a central location where everyone can see what is going on. Do not give children or teens TVs in their own rooms. Instead, have a family TV in a central location where everyone can see what is being viewed. Set family rules for how to use smart phones. Collect your children s and teens phones before bedtime. With their knowledge, look over their texting and online activities. Accountability is in. Teach your children how to use social networking sites wisely. The media has many wonderful advantages. It s an indispensable part of life in the 21st century. But, as parents, we have a new responsibility: Help our children learn how to use the media wisely and appropriately, according to God s instruction. God will give you special wisdom. In the battle for our minds, we want to be on God s side! Donna J. Habenicht, Ed.D. Professor Emerita Educational and Counseling Psychology Provided by the Children s Ministry Resource Center P.S.
