WELCOME TO PIONEER SPRING SOMETIMES MAKES ME SAD! If you read my welcome in the March 14 bulletin, you know how much I love Spring. Just the thought of its arrival makes me feel like singing. So why then, now that Spring is truly here, am I feeling sad? Last Friday evening it hit me right between the eyes, you might say! For the past two semesters, my husband, Richard, and I have hosted student GROW Groups in our home. This semester the group came at 5:00 PM each Friday to study, pray and then fellowship over supper. Student led, this group has wrestled with some of the "hard questions" that young people face in today's world. I have been proud of their willing- ness to dig deep, often continuing their discussions around the supper table. Here's why I am sad! This Friday evening was our last GROW Group for the semester and at the end of April (when it's still Spring), our "adoptees" will leave the campus hopefully just for the summer. You see, they've truly become "family" Friday evenings won't be the same without them. We are blessed at Pioneer to have many students university, seminary, academy/ high school and elementary. Let's be sure they know how glad we are that they are part of our family! Sharon Terrell PREVIEW WEEKEND Academy students eat pizza with friends in the Commons during preview weekend. 4 THE FOURTH WATCH BLOG BY DWIGHT K. NELSON H ere s a cheerful thought on this sunshiny Tax Day. According to the website usgovernmentrevenue.com, the governments (plural) of the United States will collect $6 trillion in revenue in 2015 $3.2 trillion for the federal government, $1.6 trillion for state governments, and $1.2 trillion for local governments. Those taxes will include income tax, social security tax, sales tax, along with fees and charges and other revenue. For a total of $6 trillion. Do you know how much that is? Neither do I. But here s a graphic to tuck away in your mind: if you took a one hundred dollar bill and taped it end to end with another 4 PIONEER MEMORIAL CHURCH

hundred dollar bill and kept doing that, how long would the taped hundred dollar bills need to be in order to have $1 trillion worth? You would need to circle the earth with $100 bills are you ready for this? 41 times in order to have $1 trillion! Make that 246 times around the earth with hundred dollar bills in order to have $6 trillion, the annual revenue for the governments of this nation! (And be assured, the $6 trillion gets spent as fast as it is raised.) Wasn t it Jesus who declared, Render to Caesar what is Caesar s and to God what is God s (Matthew 22:21). Just between you and me it appears Caesar is making off like a bandit. Unfortunately, for God the numbers aren t quite as encouraging. MUST BE THAT ENLISTING GOD TO BE MY PERSONAL CHIEF FINANCIAL OFFICER IS ALL ABOUT MY TRUSTING HIM TO TAKE CARE OF ME, NO MATTER WHAT IT LOOKS OR FEELS LIKE AT THE TIME. Not that God needs our taxes. The silver is Mine, and the gold is Mine, says the LORD of hosts (Haggai 2:8). And if Google is to be believed, that would be 1.4 million tons of silver (that s ever been mined) and 170,000 tons of gold (ditto). At today s market prices that comes to approximately $6.5+ trillion in precious metals. But then we remember that God also owns the entire planet, shooting His real estate holdings through the roof. He also owns the solar system. And also the Milky Way galaxy. And also the universe of a billion billion galaxies. Conclusion: He doesn t need our taxes. Or even our tithes. After all, what are my nickels and dimes in comparison to His title deed to the entire universe! And yet, God invites you and me: Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in My house. Test me in this, says the LORD Almighty, and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that you will not have room enough for it (Malachi 3:10). Apparently, tithes and offerings are more about me than they are about Him. Because if He doesn t need them, it must be that I do. Must be that enlisting God to be my personal Chief Financial Officer is all about my trusting Him to take care of me, no matter what it looks or feels like at the time. Must also be that returning to Him 10% of my income and giving offerings as He blesses me is simply an expression of my gratitude for God s continual care and my request for His wise 24/7 management of my life. And on top of it all He offers this stunning bottom-line: I will throw open the floodgates of heaven and bless you so much you won t have room for it all! So why not take God up on His incredible offer? If you d like to partner with Him electronically, download our free app SecureGive from your app store. It s private, secure and as easy as With the app you can return your tithe to God or give an offering to Pioneer 24/7 anywhere on earth. Look Caesar has our taxes, but God has our lives and I say let s keep it that way. You can follow Pastor Dwight s blog at APRIL 18,

FEATURE ARTICLE MY 3 OH WOWS" OF FORGIVENESS BY JACQUELINE DOHNA A fter talking with some friends here on campus I have discovered a common theme regarding forgiveness. It seems as though everyone here struggles with the consequences of unresolved hurt, me being the first to admit my conflict. But how can this be? Since becoming a Christian I have been under the impression that as a follower of Christ it should be easy to let go of the past. So often this is reinforced by our lack of understanding of the full biblical context of forgiveness. A verse that I have wrestled with is found in Ephesians 4:31-32 which states, Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you. However, in my experience forgiveness can be a bit more complex than we imagine it to be. There is something about being personally hurt by another human being that cuts us deeper than any weapon ever could. Personally, I have battled with an immense load of guilt because of my lack of forgiveness. This guilt magnifies when I think of Jesus forgiveness for me. This Man literally came down from Heaven to experience the ultimate humiliation and torture WE MUST CHOOSE DAILY TO FORGIVE JUST AS WE CHOOSE DAILY TO LOVE. so that I can have a chance at living free from the bondage of sin. My selfishness is what nailed Him to the cross and He still finds me valuable. This is a concept that I still can't fully grasp in its entirety. This lack of understanding has become a hindrance in my journey to forgiveness. Notice I mentioned the word journey, insinuating that there is no magical teleportation to the land of forgiveness, but a period of traveling in between. This was my first of three major Oh wow moments pertaining to the idea of forgiveness. I had this image in my head of forgiveness being similar to a light switch that instantaneously exerted power to the bulb once flipped upward. Forgiveness has to be a conscious and continuous process. Intentional effort is needed in order to forgive people who have caused any suffering in our lives. We must choose daily to forgive just as we choose daily to love. My second Oh wow moment took place when I realized all of my recollections regarding my unforgiven past hurts were related in a specific way. They all replayed in my head with me as the star victim of all the scenes. I was so caught up with my own hurt that I left no room in my mind for the other person and their potential feelings about the situation. I saw 6 PIONEER MEMORIAL CHURCH

that this selfish thinking also left no room for God to heal any of these injuries. There is one more shift in my perspective that I have encountered while continuing on my uphill road to forgiveness. Initially, forgiveness to me seemed weak. I felt that if I forgave someone for hurting me that this made the other person think their behavior was correct. This would mean that I let them off the hook and they are now free to continue their ways of maltreatment. However, my thinking couldn t have been further from the truth. To forgive someone takes bravery, courage and all other synonyms that you can possibly think of. "Forgiving does not erase the bitter past. A healed memory is not a deleted memory. Instead, forgiving what we cannot forget creates a new way to remember. We change the memory of our past into a hope for our future." Lewis B. Smedes. I would like to end with two important thoughts. First, I have found it to be both reasonable and acceptable to be angry towards others when our emotions are hurt. We are wired emotionally and shouldn t feel guilty for expressing these feelings as long as we do so in a loving way. Secondly, what helps me through this journey is telling all of these feelings to the One who can relate the most Jesus. I m still trying to understand forgiveness and working through this troubled area in my life, but I no longer am doing it alone. Jacqueline Dohna is a junior Psychology major at Andrews University. The traditional text "Kyrie Eleison" means "Lord, Have Mercy." Contemporary Norwegian composer Ola Gjeilo has captured an unusual context for these words. His composition "The Spheres" includes an optional choral part, which is not heard today, along with parts played today by the AU Wind Symphony. But the wide-spacing concept behind his work remains evident. One commentator has acknowledged Gjeilo's "talent for creating aural pictures," referring to "a visual component to the music he writes." What do you imagine, hearing this music: perhaps being among "the spheres" in space, sounds floating against a background of profound silence? Or is it perhaps something closer to home: tender thoughts of "Kyrie Eleison" against a background of profound love? APRIL 18,

MASTER PLAN OF EVANGELISM GREATER YOUNG MEN BENTON HARBOR BY PASTOR TAURUS MONTGOMERY T his is a story that is kind of the "fruit" of the 1,000 Man March that was organized in Benton Harbor in January of this year. Harbor of Hope has a mentoring program called Greater Young Men (GYM). It started with us speaking to students at Benton Harbor Highschool. The principal really liked what we were doing; 14 young men signed up asking to be mentored. Unfortunately, we had to turn some of the young people away because we did not have enough mentors. We meet with them once a week for about an hour. We talk about life issues with them. We eat out together. Each of the mentors is paired up with one mentee. One thing that struck me during our very first meeting was one of the mentees, Darrel, asked how long it was going to be and how often we were going to meet. We informed him that meetings were once a week. His words were, "Once a week! Ah man, I thought we would meet every day! I wish we could do this every day. The heart of this 15-year-old expressed a need for constant positive companionship. The fact that his father has been in prison since Darrel was a baby breaks his heart; mine too. The vision of GYM is to inspire young men like Darrel to be the greatest people they can be and to learn from and avoid mistakes that some of their fathers have made. If you would like to volunteer and be a part of this ministry, contact Pastor Taurus Montgomery (see below). FOR MORE INFORMATION: Taurus Montgomery taurus.montgomery@gmail.com APRIL 18,
