WELCOME! He is not here, but is risen! That grave shattering declaration of the angels to the mourning women on that long ago and far away Easter morning still thunders its Good News to our third millennial generation. He is risen! And the tomb is empty. Let the glad tidings reverberate through the arches of this sanctuary into the high heavens as we celebrate Christ s resurrection. Do you bring an empty heart, an empty life today? Then let the One who emptied His own tomb fill your emptiness with the shining light of His resurrection power. Let the peace of the risen Christ be yours. It is He who welcomes us this day! It s was no April Fools prank. The energy force the quake released was the equivalent of over 30 megatons thirty million tons of TNT. For comparison, a 1 megaton bomb is capable of destroying 80 square miles. Imagine thirty times that destructive force and reach! The story of Easter, as told by Matthew in the original Greek, describes a massive temblor that predawn morning: There was a violent earthquake, for an angel of the Lord came down from heaven and, going to the tomb, rolled back the stone and sat on it (Matthew 28:2). The words Matthew chose are megas seismos from whence comes our English transliteration to describe a mega seismic event. Interestingly, those same two Greek 2 Continued on 7

I WILL DO A NEW THING FAKE OR FORTUNE? Recently I watched an episode of the BBC art detective series Fake or Fortune. It may be a surprise, but many paintings are not what they seem to be. The program series finds lost treasures, conducts restoration projects, and searches for sleepers, paintings that are either unrecognized as painted by a master, or hide dark secrets. In the episode, a painting claiming to be by Van Dyke was purchased for 7,000 with an additional 25,000 invested in cleaning, restoration, scientific examination, and expert analysis. After four months, 500 hours, and over 1,000 scalpel blades used to scrape away the top layer of paint, a masterpiece was exposed. The investment in time and money was based on the belief that the original painting had been painted by Van Dyke when he worked in England. If this could be proved, the painting would be worth between 200, ,000 and considered a national treasure. After all the pigment and brushstroke analysis, X-ray, infrared, ultraviolet, and electron microscopic tests were completed; the evidence which is as unique as fingerprints proved that in fact Van Dyke had painted the face, but that his studio workers had finished the painting. God is also looking for a masterpiece evidence of The Master s work under a layer of spurious paint. The process to find and reveal that masterpiece is long and arduous. But God has made an expensive investment, believing that the endeavor will pay off in the revelation of a treasure. Some socalled experts believe the painting to be a fake and not worth the expense or effort. Therefore, it has to be proven authenticated that it has truly been painted by The Master Painter. The authenticating process for a sleeper includes methods that look inside the painting and reveal aspects that are not observable on the surface. At the end of time, as in Eden (Genesis 3), God examines the situation carefully and methodically so that all the angels are satisfied that God is patient, longsuffering, and fair. His process does not destroy the masterpiece beneath. He reveals the inner thoughts and intentions of the heart so that the angels can agree that no fakes have been allowed to enter the city and start another rebellion. Are you willing to be put under the knife and have the spurious paint removed? Ask The Master Restorer to do it, only He has the tools. Dennis Hollingsead Examine me, O Lord, and test me. Look closely into my heart and mind. PSALM 26:2 GOD S WORD TRANSLATION 3

OPERATING FUND GROW GROUPS / JOY AND CELEBRATION Have you ever wondered about Scripture verses that talk about dancing? Sacred Movement and Dance is a GROW Group that explores the meaning of these verses as participants learn traditional Hebrew dances that show joy and celebration. Leader Joelle Acre, an Andrews University student, says, When I learned Hebrew dancing about a year and a half ago, I was lucky just to get my feet going in the right direction. Now she is sharing her enthusiasm for this special active way of praising God. Members of her GROW Group feel blessed by their time together. Besides being fun and good exercise, I find Hebrew dancing to be beautiful and reverent. It is a wonderful way to worship God with my body and soul. I joined this group out of curiosity and also for additional exercise in my life. From the first time we met I experienced something new. Putting the Hebrew words and music together while thinking about its significance and then adding movement was a form of worship and praise I had not expected. I truly feel that my spiritual walk and relationship with God has grown through this form. Being out of college now, I actually joined two GROW Groups, so I could still have a place to connect with other people of my faith. This class has been amazingly fun! But I also believe God is using this group to teach me a ton of cultural and spiritual lessons. Our summer 2014 GROW Groups will begin soon. We hope you will journey with us, become closer to Jesus and make new friends. 5 MASTER PLAN OF EVANGELISM MPE / OUR NEW BIBLE WORK COORDINATOR I d like to share with you some really exciting news. I d like to introduce you to our newest member of the PMC team Tabitha Umali. Before I share more about her, allow me to give you some background that prompted her joining the team. As you know, the Connect Card has been a wonderful blessing to us. Through that simple card, people are able to make life-changing decisions every single week. For example, it s not uncommon for us to receive 3-4 decisions per week for someone requesting baptism or wanting to study the Bible. Praise God! Two weeks ago we had eight people make decisions for baptism or to study the Bible. We also have around 40 people who have been trained to give Bible studies, which is also a huge blessing. What has happened and this is a good problem is that we re receiving so many decisions that it s exceeded my own ability to personally provide coordination for all the Bible work. After a conversation with a trusted colleague, Tabitha s name came up. After meeting with her, I discovered that she is the exact person we need. She has worked for nine years as a Bible worker, at one point coordinating over 600 interests from one church. She also has a heart for equipping and training and plans to spend quality time mentoring those who are already giving Bible studies. Please join me in welcoming Tabitha as our new Bible Work Coordinator. 6 CHRISTIAN EDUCATION AA / ENGLAND EDUCATIONAL TOUR Mark Twain once famously asserted that travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men... cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one s lifetime. As a Christian educator, I work with a team of professionals dedicated to just such spiritual endeavors, and one of the many privileges of working at Andrews Academy comes in the form of travel opportunities, both foreign and domestic, available to teachers and students. In 2005, with the generous support of my colleagues and the participation of fellow sponsor David Sherman, the England Educational Tour was launched. Occurring every 3 years, the trip incorporates a series of onsite locations in England which connect students to the religious and world history, as well as the literature and authors they study over their 4 years at the Academy. Like Chaucer s Canterbury pilgrims, AA students find themselves on a journey of cultural and personal discovery, surrounded by some of the most stunning natural scenery and breathtaking architecture to be found anywhere in the world. But of even greater importance than its academic and cultural offerings are the opportunities for spiritual growth, personal reflection, and Christian witness, as we were often reminded in the generous assessments of tour guides, hotel managers, and even our coach driver, all of whom were impressed with the kindness, courtesy, and spirit of intellectual inquiry present in our students, though none of them had ever heard of Seventhday Adventists. Praise God for the opportunities not only to investigate the beauties of this world, but to serve as a positive influence in the lives of others! Rebecca Wright THANK God for travel and witnessing opportunities MORE INFO Robert Overstreet / overstrr@andrews.edu CHRISTIAN EDUCATION GIVE TO LINE 3 Goal to-date $64,305 Received to-date $46,840 (Received to-date 2013) $50,353 As of April 12,

THE FOURTH WATCH CONTINUED words describe the mega seismic event that marks the end of earth s history as we know it, immediately preceding the fiery, glorious return of Christ (see Revelation 16:18). An earthquake when He died, an earthquake when He arose, and an earthquake when He returns you get the impression that Christ is the Lord of unbridled power, do you not? Power not measured in megatons of weaponry, but given the cosmic war He leads to rescue this rebel planet from its dark and fallen warlord, power measured in the liberated and set-free lives of human beings who cry to Him for rescue. This Wednesday evening the sanctuary of our campus church was occupied by men, women, young adults and teenagers who gathered together for a special prayer and anointing service. For the past three Sabbaths we have confronted the enemy s diabolical challenge to the lordship of Christ through demonic addictions. Nobody ever plans to become addicted. The devil s strategy behind every addiction is to lure us through the tempting bait of pleasure, gratification, appetite, social conformity we all know (all too well) the can of bait the enemy turns to in order to hook us. But the profoundly good news that pervaded this sanctuary last Wednesday is the glad tidings that permeate this Easter: If the Son sets you free, you are free indeed! (John 8:36). Couple that promise with this one: Christ s death and resurrection have opened before every soul an unlimited source of power from which to draw (RH ). Unbridled, undiluted, unlimited megas seimos power from the risen Christ straight to you. Ask for it, ask for Him. And the earth will quake over your deliverance! 7

THE WORD MATTHEW 28:1-6 NIV After the Sabbath, at dawn on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to look at the tomb. There was a violent earthquake, for an angel of the Lord came down from heaven and, going to the tomb, rolled back the stone and sat on it. His appearance was like lightning, and his clothes were white as snow. The guards were so afraid of him that they shook and became like dead men. The angel said to the women, Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. He is not here; he has risen, just as he said. Come and see the place where he lay. MUSIC ALIVE A RADIANT WORD lleluia! rings out in today s A worship music. The word is Latin, from the Hebrew hallelujah meaning praise ye the Lord. This radiant word appears in Psalms 111 to 113 and 115 to 117, as well as in several verses of Revelation 19 as the cry in heaven of a great multitude. In common usage, the word is focused particularly on the celebration of Christ s resurrection. By stark contrast, many local churches omit the word in the weeks leading to their celebration of Christ s resurrection. This practice can serve to underscore the joy of the word once it emerges after weeks of waiting. Charles Wesley s joyful text Christ the Lord Is Risen Today has alleluias interspersed (although the alleluias, in this case, were not in Wesley s original). 9
