welcome! A cheery winter welcome to our visitors and returning students, along with those who are just beginning the Andrews experience. No matter the wintry blues of the weather around this place (or the lack of winter), we hope Pioneer can be a warm refuge in the midst of it all. And dinner s in the oven for you, our guest. Our host families look forward to welcoming you downstairs in our Commons following second service. Welcome! And it isn t the point of this blog to plunge into that academic and/or scientific debate. But the flurry of headlines this past week over our nation s record temperature deserves some reflection. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has announced that 2012 was the hottest year on record for the United States. According to their calculations the average daily temperature in our nation last year was 55.3 degrees which, as it turns out, is one degree higher than the previous record in 1998, and 3.2 degrees more than the average temperature of the 20th century. Apparently the rise of even one degree is startling, given that national averages usually rise or fall in tenths of a degree. Continued on 7

REVIVAL & REFORMATION Share Far and Wide By Dennis Hollingsead There is a common evangelism principle that is expressed in both the Old and New Testaments. This principle is stated in the Old Testament as Cast your bread upon the water and in the New Testament as, a sower went out to sow. If you have ever scattered lawn seed by hand, this parable will have a deeper meaning to you. You cannot control where every last seed will land, neither are you responsible for whether it germinates or not (other than faithful watering). We have been told that God s faithful servants are in all the different denominations, religious belief systems, and even non-belief systems. How are we to regard these vast fields of humanity? How are we to reach those who have not heard? By spreading information to any and all we can, by making friends and acquaintances with the non-churched. Do we believe we have the truth? Yes, but only as we have Jesus who is the way, the truth, and the life. This is not doctrinal snobbery, this is a responsibility (Ezekiel 30:1-20). Just as in the parable of the sower, we cannot discern how individuals will react to the good news and the warning of judgment to come. Some of us have the ability to reach many, while others have skills to nurture and disciple a few; but we all can do something! Do you have a burden for sharing something with your car repairman? How about the shoe salesperson or the checker at the grocery store? Share where you are, spread the news everywhere! Let s ask God every morning where He would have us go and to whom we should talk with. Let s move forward and get the seeds scattered so that all will have opportunity to accept. Cast your bread upon the waters, for you will find it after many days. Give a serving to seven, and also to eight, for you do not know what evil will be on the earth. As you do not know what is the way of the wind, or how the bones grow in the womb of her who is with child, so you do not know the works of God who makes everything. In the morning sow your seed, and in the evening do not withhold your hand; for you do not know which will prosper, either this or that, or whether both alike will be good (Ecclesiastes 11:1, 2, 5, 6). Please pray for: The Ten Days of Prayer! (formerly Operation Global Rain) January 9-19, All who watch and hear the sermons, that the Holy Spirit will move on hearts and minds. 3

Operating Fund Satellite Vespers / Touching Hearts Satellite Vespers is a studentplanned, student-led, bi-monthly event that is touching the hearts of our teens. Jessica Yoong, a junior at Andrews Academy, has been the director of Satellite for two years. Her team is composed of seven other teens who use their leadership skills to intentionally target not only our SDA teens, but other young people in our community. They have two coaches Pastor Carlos Pasillas and Pastor Micheal Goetz. Satellite Vespers is held in the Youth Chapel on Friday night. We want to provide teens with something meaningful to do on a Friday night, explained Yoong. Posters announcing the event are put in many public places like Taco Bell, the public library, and at Apple Valley. Approximately 220 teens attended the last Satellite Vespers. The theme was Accept the Present, Forget the Past and focused on the gift of salvation presented by Pastor Michael Jones. Once a year, in May, the group puts together a youth rally. Last year it was held at the Howard Performing Arts Center and special speakers were Eric and Leslie Ludy, well-known for their book When God Writes Your Love Story. Approximately 500 teens listened to the thought-provoking presentation on relationships. The testimonies from those who come to Satellite inspire me, says Jessica. I ve heard stories of teens who say their spiritual life has been reawakened and now they are excited about a relationship with God. The next Satellite Vespers is scheduled for February. 5 Master Plan Of evangelism Harbor of Hope / Nurturing our Youth In 2012, the Soldiers Of The Cross program at Harbor of Hope saw many increases in executing its mission of leading the youth of Benton Harbor to Christ through holistic mentorship. In the past year, the youth have been engaged in a range of discipleship activities aimed to increase their relationship with Christ, promote academic and personal growth, and increase community outreach. The highlight of the program for the kids came on SOTC Sabbaths at Harbor of Hope church; it is on such an occasion that the youth actively stepped into the role of ministers to others. The youth pray That we will find ways to help our youth minister to the community more Info Taurus Montgomery / montgomery@pmchurch.org proudly assumed the identity of being soldiers for Christ using their various talents. This year promises to yield more fruit as the youth are seeking more and more ways to lead in ministry through their natural talents. Their self-produced goal for this semester is to put on their own concert so they might minister to more individuals in their community. Our hope is to continue to facilitate growth within these outstanding youths by nurturing them in becoming wellrounded individuals and strong leaders for Christ in their community. master plan of evangelism give to line 5 Goal to-date $131,427 Received to-date $107,656 (Received to-date 2011) $124,822 As of December 22,

Christian Education AA / His Mercies are New Every Morning Every school day at Andrews Academy begins in the chapel as everyone gathers at 8:55 a.m. for a joint worship experience. Like King David in Psalms 143:7-9, we want to ask God in the morning to bring us His word of unfailing love and show us the way we should go. Chapel presentations are done weekly by different faculty, students, student groups and area pastors. When Mrs. Pellegrini s Bible class led out in chapel this year, they focused on the messages in the book of Romans, something they were studying in Bible class. They found that Romans is chock-full of lessons that they could share with their peers. The students were amazing, said Steven Atkins. The class was divided into five groups and each group took one day of the week to expand on a text in Romans. It was their purpose to make that text relevant to student life at Andrews Academy. The week s creative presentations included songs, skits, and even a video that was produced and acted out by members of the Bible class. The message of the video was We are not saved by the good that we do. We are saved by Christ s sacrifice and our relationship with Him. All over the world, most people recognize the importance of an uplifting start in the morning. The whole day is heavily impacted by how we begin our day. We are thankful at Andrews Academy that every morning we can collectively bow before the One who saves us by His grace. His mercies are new every morning. Thank God for the privilege of prayer more Info Robert Overstreet / overstrr@andrews.edu Christian Education give to line 3 Goal to-date $229,806 Received to-date $198,862 (Received to-date 2011) $207,991 As of December 22,

The Fourth Watch Coupled with this headline is a report a week ago that snowfall this season is already lagging. According to climatologists, recovery from last year s withering drought necessitates at least eight feet of snow this winter, with some estimates placing our snow need as high as 150+ inches. Will we get it? Fifty degrees this weekend doesn t make this winter seem very promising! Even the mighty Mississippi River is protesting. Some officials are worried that because of the drop in river levels, barge traffic south of St. Louis could possibly be halted. The Army Corp of Engineers is dredging the river this winter to keep it passable for deep-hulled vessels. Then there s all the talk last year about Antarctica and Greenland experiencing unprecedented ice sheet melting. But review the various studies posted over the last couple months and it s clear scientists aren t agreed on the magnitude of that loss, or even its causes. As these weather headlines come and go, I must confess that tucked away in the back of my mind is that apocalyptic description of an endtime earth in Revelation: Then the fourth angel poured out his bowl on the sun, and power was given to him to scorch men with fire. And men were scorched with great heat (Revelation 16:8-9). I m certainly not suggesting that this spate of weather headlines is proof we are experiencing the fourth plague! But it is intriguing that an apocalyptic description of earth at the end of time is not one of a new spreading Ice Age, continued but rather a depiction of intensifying and destructive solar heat. All of which is simply a reminder that all of us earth children are truly dependent on the Lord of Nature for our daily sustenance and survival on this planet. Our nearest star and the seasons it regulates are under His omnipotent control. And when one day earth becomes the last battleground between the dark knight and the Morning Star, for His friends God promises: The sun shall not strike you by day, nor the moon by night (Psalm 121:6). So let the weather patterns continue to perplex meteorologists. Whatever 2013 s temperatures turn out to be, our hope and trust this New Year is in the One who used to walk on the storms when He was here. 7

You are my friends if you do what I command. I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you. You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you so that you might go and bear fruit fruit that will last and so that whatever you ask in my name the Father will give you. This is my command: Love each other. music alive Take, and Let ord, give me all in this house Lprayed Frances Ridley Havergal. In her thirties, she was visiting Areley House in London for several days. There she was among ten other persons. One commentary states, All of them were either unconverted or unhappy, and Havergal was impressed to pray for them so that they might all experience the joy of Christian living. The night immediately prior to her departure, the commentary continues, only two young women had not surrendered their will to the Lord, but after a personal visit from Havergal, they too trusted and rejoiced. As Havergal rejoiced that night, eleven groups of two couplets each of Take My Life, and Let It Be Consecrated formed in her mind. Six such groups comprise today s Worship in Music. 9

Connect GROW SERVE GO Second service worship is a key part of the Connect strategy. Our primary focus is an encounter with Jesus that is a catalyst for a transformative discipleship journey for all who come. This catalyst opportunity has four guiding principles. Accessibility: We intentionally welcome all by giving consideration to things like the service time, service length, facility, parking attendants, hospitality teams, greeters, and children s packets. Christ Centered: We nurture the growth of committed Christ followers and connect new followers with Jesus Christ. Sabbath mornings are the best opportunity for all to be involved in connecting others to Christ by inviting them to come. Our Connect Card provides a reliable means for people to respond to the call of Christ. Creativity: We meaningfully celebrate creativity and the arts with regard for the diversity of age, cultures, and life stages. Creativity can take on many forms: music, message, prayer, visual arts, and media. Versatility: We plan to celebrate significant moments in our congregational journey like baby dedications, festivals, and baptisms. Also by prayerfully planning ahead we create space for the Holy Spirit to intercede for the unexpected highs and lows of the world we live in. Over the next few weeks, the bulletin will guide you through the various elements of our second service worship. We hope this will inspire you to more meaningfully engage and connect with Christ and this community. 11
