2 WELCOME! Must be summer the last of the graduations is now history! Last Sunday here at Pioneer our Andrews Academy seniors commenced their new adventure and then the sanctuary filled again on Thursday evening as the eighth-graders of Ruth Murdoch Elementary marched to the familiar Pomp and Circumstance. Now the sunny stretch of road through June, July and August begins. And while Pioneer says Godspeed to all the graduates of spring, our doors will be thrown wide to every summer Sabbath worshiper ahead. And that begins today. Welcome to this House of God. It seems that these cosmic behemoths do go out with a bang. A big BANG! Our star, the sun, while accounting for percent of our solar system s mass, is still no giant. There s another class of stars referred to as Wolf-Rayet stars which are more then 20 times as massive and at least five times as hot (Sunblock anyone?). Here s the theory on how these stellar giants go out. They selfdestruct as supernovas. It s violent, big, and everyone can see it. And by everyone, we mean they are so bright they momentarily block out the view of entire galaxies. All you can see is this star going out. These days the news of these big stars going out can be sent around the globe in less than 40 minutes 2 Continued on 7

3 I WILL DO A NEW THING BEAUTIFUL JOE When I was in grades five and six, one of my favorite books was Beautiful Joe, a story about a dog that was horribly mistreated by Mr. Jenkins the milk man. Beautiful Joe had his ears and tail cut off when he tried to protect his mother from Mr. Jenkins kicking her. Joe was rescued by Miss Laura who bound his wounds and took him to her home to live. Miss Laura s family loved animals, and her brothers had many pets including Dick the canary, Billie the fox terrier, Bella the parrot, Davy the rat, and Malta the cat. By the way, this book is great for teaching Christian values to children regarding self-discipline, thrift, cleanliness, and care for others and animals. In the story, Malta is very wise and knows that she is not to touch or bother the parrot, canary, or rat. Miss Laura had also taught Malta to avoid hunting the sparrows outside. One time Malta was sitting on the porch watching the sparrows, trembling with temptation to attack. Occasionally she would half rise, as if to start crouching toward them, but then laid down again. Miss Laura had been watching the whole time and took Malta to the kitchen to get a reward of milk for obeying her instructions. When we compare human behavior with that of animals, our pets are often better at modeling Christianity than we are. Here is a list of characteristics I came up with and you can probably think of many others. Our pets: Forgive immediately and hold no grudges when mistreated; Do not gossip about you or expose your faults to others; Unless ill, are always happy, joyful, and ready to play; Never pre-judge or make negative assumptions about others based on looks, skin color, or religious affiliation; Are willing to just rest in the presence of the Master, at the feet of the Master, on the lap of the Master, always waiting for a word from the Master; Are willing to do whatever the Master wants to do, to go with the Master wherever He goes; Are not afraid to speak to the Master when hungry or needing comfort; Trust that the Master will provide all things food, shelter, and companionship, without thinking about it. Oh that we would listen and follow the Master with as much faith and devotion as our pets do us! Dennis Hollingsead He heals the brokenhearted And binds up their wounds. PSALM 147:3 NKJV 3

4 NEIGHBOR TO NEIGHBOR N2N / CELEBRATING 100 YEARS OF SERVICE Many of us are acquainted with Neighbor to Neighbor, the SDA Community Services, located just minutes from our PMC Church. In the early 1900 s members of the Emmanuel Missionary College Church Dorcas Society could not even imagine such a spacious facility. Mary Macomber in her History of the Beginning and Progress of the Dorcas Welfare Work in Berrien Springs states that her first remembrance of Dorcas work was around 1914 when her mother began attending meetings in the home of Mrs. William Guthrie. Ladies met in private homes like that of Mrs. Guthrie and Mrs. Richard Ford to make quilts and to sew and mend clothing to be given to families in need. Later, Emmanuel Missionary College offered them various temporary spaces to work in the little cottage in the wooded area simply known as the Grove, the Quonset huts behind Burman Hall and the unfinished basements of Netherly Hall and South Hall. The moves must have been hard; however, it did not deter the group from their goal to be a blessing in their community. Then, in 1951, businessman Paul Kuhlman offered his former tractor salesroom on Highway 31 to them rent free for two years. By this time more and more calls were coming in for emergency assistance throughout the county and beyond. This year we are celebrating 100 years of continuous organized community service work in Berrien Springs by the Seventh-day Adventist church. Over the summer months, I ll share with you some interesting stories and pictures from their history. 5 MASTER PLAN OF EVANGELISM FLAG CAMP / FUN LEARNING ABOUT GOD Joses Ngugi, a six-year veteran counselor for FLAG Camp, points out that through working with the kids he has learned to see life through the eyes of children and to realize how fun learning about God can be. Joses is right Learning about God is fun. It is possible we have forgotten that we learn just as much about God through relationships (those are fun), experiencing nature (this is fun), and playing (who doesn t enjoy this) as we do in a worship service or Bible study. Amen! Learning about God is fun and we will be taking time this summer to have a Fun Learning About God (FLAG) Camp. Children between the ages of 5-13 can have Fun Learning About God (FLAG) starting Monday, June 4, through Friday, August 3. The camp is held at the Pathfinder Building on the campus of Andrews University. It runs daily from 8:30 AM to 4 PM with Precare starting at 7:30 AM and After-care going until 5:30 PM. You can either fill out an application now or wait until your child attends. There is registration every day at the camp. The application and camper handbook can be found at www. flag-camp.org or call As always, there are some who have difficulty paying. We invite you to give toward sponsoring some children. If you want to help mark summer camp on the tithe envelope. 6 CHRISTIAN EDUCATION AA / THE LORD WATCH BETWEEN US Mizpah is Hebrew for watchtower. As mentioned in the Bible, it marked an agreement between two men, with God as their witness. Jacob had secretly fled the house of Laban, his father-in-law, taking flocks of animals, all his other assets, and his two wives and their children (the daughters and grandchildren of Laban) with him, intending never to return. Laban discovered this and pursued Jacob. After discussion, the two decided to formalize the separation. Laban admitted that his daughters had voluntarily left and he agreed to let Jacob go in peace, but exacted a promise from Jacob to never abuse his daughters or take additional wives (Genesis 31:50). The two men separated with the famous Mizpah words of Genesis 31:49, The Lord watch between me and thee, when we are absent one from another. Mizpah has also become a part of Andrews Academy s end-of-the-year events. Since 1992 when Dr. Nash first introduced this symbolic ceremony, a list of names of all the students in the school for that year is placed in a Mizpah vault located in the theme wall of the Academy commons. It is the school s way of presenting to God the entire Academy student body and faculty from not only that year, but for every year since 1979 when the building was opened. By placing the names in the vault they are placing each person in God s hands with a prayer that each person will reunite together when Jesus returns to take us to Heaven. Sue Rappette PRAY For the many students who have attended Andrews Academy MORE INFO Robert Overstreet / overstrr@andrews.edu CHRISTIAN EDUCATION GIVE TO LINE 3 Goal to-date $90,027 Received to-date $66,243 (Received to-date 2013) $72,003 As of May 24,

7 PASTOR S BLOG thanks to the intermediate Palomar Transient Factory (google it). Even more exciting is that thanks to the technology available scientists can get a closer look to better understand about the nature of the exploding star and how it evolved before it exploded. I wonder if Abraham knew this about stars when God talked to him about his descendants. Then He brought him outside and said, Look now toward heaven, and count the stars if you are able to number them. And He said to him, So shall your descendants be (Genesis 15:5 NKJV). Abraham knew from his own journey about his tendency to lie and take matters of destiny into his own hands. But could he imagine the deception of his grandson Jacob against Isaac? Or how about his great-grandchildren selling their own flesh and blood into slavery. How about Judah sleeping with his daughter-in-law because he thought she was a prostitute! That s only within a couple of generations of God s promise to Abraham. Keep going down the genealogy of Jesus (Matthew 1) and the list gets longer, bloodier, and more scandalous. A king after God s own heart commits murder and adultery. The fruit of that affair births the wisest king of all the land as well as the most promiscuous. Another is a king who is best known for taking out the prophets and re-introducing pagan worship and idols to a divided nation. Talk about Abraham s stars going out with a BANG! CONTINUED There is no question that when stars blow up they are inherently violent and catastrophic. If we aren t good stewards of grace we risk taking these rare but significant events and making them that much more violent to the extent that they block out the rest of the shining lights in the galaxy. Therefore when these stars blow up we must engage them with the hope that God s prodigal sons and daughters will return. We shall with arms wide open be ready to receive them for the welcome table feast. Quotes from: com/science/2014/05/21/supernovadiscovery-reveals-how-biggestbrightest-stars-die/ 7

We wait before the Lord and we keep his way. Let us praise the name of the Lord. THE WORD PROVERBS 3:5-6 NKJV Trust in the Lord with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths. MUSIC ALIVE WHAT S WILD? Kentucky writer Wendell Berry turns the tide on a typical concept of the wild. Writing of creatures of woods and fields, he says, They plainly are going about their own domestic lives.... They are far better at domesticity than we industrial humans are.... They think of us as wild, and... they are right. We are the ones who are undomesticated, barbarous, unrestrained, disorderly, extravagant, and out of control. They are our natural teachers, and we have learned too little from them. The woods itself, conventionally thought of as wild, in fact is thought of and used as home by the creatures who are domesticated within it. Today s Worship in Music, while not about the woods, reflects the simple, yet highly sophisticated, beauty of a seashell, one of God s creations in the wild. 9

God has not abandoned this sin-wracked world, but shows His love through the kindness and comfort of those around us. Such a blessing and we have this hope. Kathy & Conrad Demsky We would like to extend a warm thank you to our Adventist Church Family for their prayers and support as we have struggled with the sudden sickness and passing of our wife, mother, and grandmother Gloria Hippler. The level of peace and calm that we experienced through this process was unprecedented, and we are certain that was only possible because so many were actively lifting us up in prayer. Many of you kindly provided food for our family (and for the memorial service) and we are grateful for your delicious generosity! Thank you for your continued prayers. Tonya Snyder

14 MEDIA VOLUNTEERS NEEDED Here at PMC we are blessed to be able to run a large-scale media ministry each and every week. This is possible in no small part to the army of dedicated volunteers who donate their time on a weekly basis. Electronic media is an important part of worship here at Pioneer. From hearing the speaker via the P.A. system, to seeing images on the screen, technology is at the heart of everything we do. Making this technology work requires a team of dedicated volunteers 15 each week. Can you picture yourself ministering through technology? This summer, we are looking for new volunteers to join the media team. No experience is needed, but a passion for excellence in ministry is required. If you would like to consider being a camera operator, helping with the audio system, or creating Power Point contact: Nick Wolfer wolfer@pmchurch.org 14

15 HEALTH NUGGETS FUN IN THE SUN Now that we have turned the corner on a record-setting cold winter, many Southwest Michigan residents will be heading outdoors for some fun in the sun. Gardening, long walks on the beach, hiking, running, biking, boating, picnics, and family get-togethers. Some timely and simple safety tips can help you make the most of your fun in the sun. CLOTHING: Wear light-colored clothing that covers your skin and don t forget that wide-brimmed hat. SUNSCREEN: Use sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or above that is Broad Spectrum based, protecting from both types of harmful sun rays (UV-A and UV-BO). Apply liberally and often (20 minutes before initial exposure and every two hours thereafter. And, every time after swimming or heavy sweating). Check the expiration date and replace if more than one year old. SUN EXPOSURE: Avoid direct exposure between 10 AM and 3 PM (most harmful rays) and be especially careful with young children who have fair skin, which is easily damaged. EAT PLENTY OF FRUITS AND VEGETABLES? Fruits and vegetables are high in anti-oxidants which protect your skin from sun damage and slow the aging process. SPIRITUALLY SPEAKING: Exposure to the Son can prevent burning! ONGOING EVENTS Classes taught by a certified Group Fitness Instructor. Group Exercise Class Exercise Class are suspended for the summer.
