2 WELCOME TO PIONEER It s quite stunning how we can underestimate the value of ONE when it matters most. Just ONE tick up in the calendar year opens a floodgates of new starts and clean slates. In a class ONE percent in your grade could cost you that needed GPA. Suddenly it seems like the value of ONE is too great. Yet through life s hardest moments we miss, and at times run from the abundance that the One and Only Son of God offers. He says, I came that they may have life and have it abundantly (John 10:10). We follow Jesus, the ONE Son of God, learning about Him from His Word, the Bible. THE VALUE OF ONE We encourage each other through the way this ONE person shows up in our lives; giving encouragement, testimony, or witness. We celebrate when a person decides to follow Jesus through a symbol of immersing someone all the way in the water. The lifelong journey after baptism is what makes us His followers- His disciples. We welcome you this morning to get to know a bit more about ONE person that changes lives for the better. Can ONE person make that much difference? Yes, the power of the ONE is indeed awesome. 4 THE FOURTH WATCH BLOG ISN T IT TIME? BY DWIGHT K. NELSON T he ill-fated AirAsia flight on the eve of this New Year could it be the story of this civilization? Flying high and unperturbed... until stricken by a raging storm... and all the desperate maneuvers notwithstanding the innocent go down? Not unlike the brutal Paris terrorist attack Wednesday on the unsuspecting editorial team of the satirical paper CharlieHebdo. Many recognize that resilient though this civilization is, there will come one day the crisis that will break its back. Not unlike the dark narrative of Jacob, cruising high through his life, the accoutrements of success obvious, until in one dark midnight the crisis strikes that breaks the man. And yet out of his shattering, the maimed patriarch is renamed the Prince who prevails with God and history is changed. The Great Controversy connects the dots from Jacob s crisis to our generation in this urgent call: The season of distress and anguish before us [earth s impending crisis] will require a faith that can endure weariness, delay, and hunger a faith that will not faint though severely tried.... Jacob prevailed because he was persevering and determined. His victory is an evidence of the power of importunate prayer. All who will lay hold of God s promises, as he did, and be as earnest and persevering as he was, will succeed as he succeeded. Those who are unwilling to deny self, to agonize before God, to pray long and earnestly for His blessing, will not obtain it. Wrestling with God how few know what it is! How few have ever had their souls drawn out after God with intensity of desire until every power is on the stretch. When waves of despair which no language can express sweep over the suppliant, how few cling with unyielding faith to the promises of God. (621) 4 PIONEER MEMORIAL CHURCH
5 before God, to pray long and earnestly for His blessing, will not obtain it. That s a hardly a threat. It simply exposes the need of our hearts to lock in rather than to keep flitting on. Especially in this year promising more crises unpredicted, unforeseen Heaven urgently calls for us to join a generation that will prevail, persevere in prayer: pleading for lost friends or family members who must come to the Savior now, begging for courageous faith and a bold spirit to loosen our tongues in witness for Jesus, petitioning God to direct our career choices, to revive our schools, our marriages our churches. How can I pray that way? Why not print off this Great Controversy quotation, keep it by your place of worship and prayer, and join me in earnestly laying hold of His promises (e.g., Psalm 50:15, In this dawning of the New Year I wonder am I, are we like Jacob, cruising high and detecting the need of no major spiritual repair after all, look at the successes we enjoy? How willing am I to go to the mat with God in a prayer that will not let go? Tuesday evening thirty or fourty of us gathered some administrators, faculty and staff to intercede for a colleague, a friend in desperate need. We noted the difference Melody Mason (in her new book Daring to Ask for More) describes between praying for (for our meals, our safety, our classes, our friends) and praying through (praying with persevering faith until our prayers are answered, until we experience victory, until God wins in that crisis, whatever it may be). These words from Great Controversy are clearly a call for you and me to move from praying for to praying through. Those who are unwilling to deny self, to agonize WRESTLING WITH GOD HOW FEW KNOW WHAT IT IS! Zechariah 12:10, Matthew 18:19,20; Isaiah 43:19/44:3). Pray through until God answers. Need help? Join me in reading Melody Mason s new book it is already changing the way I pray (availabel through Amazon.com or your local ABC). Why wait until the next storm? Isn t it time now? 6 FEATURE ARTICLE Let s Eat Healthy for the fun of it ARE YOU DATING RIGHT? BY JEFF AND TWYLA SMITH W e frequently get the question, How do I find a suitable person to date? First, the givens. Dating is the process of finding someone to marry. Keep your dating life a matter of prayer, and ask God for a softened, pure heart. We also often offer the following general counsel. 1 RELAX Desperation is not attractive. If you lack confidence, get some support from a 6 PIONEER MEMORIAL CHURCH
7 trusted friend or from a counselor who can help shore up your confidence. Relax around people and work on your social skills. You want to be open, but not an emotional dump truck. Quit looking so desperate and people will be drawn to you, rather than running the other way from your storm cloud. 2 PRIORITIZE & CHECK YOUR BAGGAGE Pain from your Ex, kids (yours or theirs), successes, and failures, etc., are all a part of life and each adds a little something to your bags. Acknowledge it then move on. The older you get, the more baggage there is. Looking for that perfect someone with a sunny disposition and no priors, is probably just a tad unrealistic. Plus, as we get older, our list of demands gets longer and we are less willing to take on issues. This could mean you need to get some professional counseling to help you with your hang-ups. One of the benefits of coupling and marrying young is that you pack your baggage together. 3 STRIKE WHILE THE IRON IS HOT With a huge student population, this campus has one of the highest densities of eligible Adventists anywhere on the planet. Meeting and marrying someone who was raised like you, has values you understand, and shares your faith is very hard to find later on. The numbers drop considerably when you get out there in your job after your time at AU. So, go get em, Tiger! 4 TAKE A RISK Marriage is not a gamble, it is a promise. The whole point of dating is to find someone you can love, partner, and work with. Don t let fear get in the way of meeting someone who intrigues you. Open your mind to include those outside your type you might be pleasantly surprised. 5 PAY ATTENTION TO THE WARNING SIGNS If there is a problem in a fledgling relationship, it doesn t get better. If dating and courtship is fraught with drama, a resultant marriage will be too. If it is starting badly, it likely won t improve with time. Don t put up with abuse verbal, physical, spiritual, or otherwise. Abuse is no way to grow a relationship, and you are laying the groundwork for your life together from the very beginning. Allowing abuse to be a part of your life together from the beginning is giving permission for it to rule life from then on. Leave. It is far better to break a date, a courtship, or an engagement than to break a marriage. 6 BE WORTH IT Be the kind of person who would be worthy of the kind of person you want to marry. Do your homework! Having a life-long partner is not about them fulfilling you, lifting your spirits, or being the key to your happiness. If you have events in your present or past that are holding you back, work through them sooner than later. Be a whole person who can share their life with another whole person. Looking for someone else to complete you only happens in the movies. God is the only One who can make us whole, keep us whole, and with His help you can be THAT spiritual, moral, ethical, healthy, grounded person who is worthy of the kind of person you want to marry. Jeff & Twyla Smith have been in ministry and marriage preparation for more than 20 years. They are part of the Engaged Encounter presentation team. JANUARY 10,

In fact, titled in German Wachet Auf (literally Wake Up ), this historic German chorale melody appears as no Composer Wold clothes this melody with a style that seems to evoke Renaissance brass in large church acoustics. Wold, a person profoundly of our time, for seventeen years was director of music at U. S. presidential retreat Camp David in Maryland. Along with Wold s music, similarly majestic is David Johnson s organ setting of the melody CONSOLATION, associated with the words, The King shall come... Come to Camp Au Sable s Lessons from the Carpenter Father/Son/Big Brother/ Buddy weekend. Go to and click on Registration before January 22. Bring a pocket knife and learn some lessons about walking in the steps of the Carpenter. Call for more information. Tablets for Cuba Our brothers and sisters in Cuba have no access to Christian books, and collections such as EGW s books or the SDA Commentary are impossible to obtain. A Bible or a simple devotional book is treasured for generations. The need is so great that people loan their scarce books between families until the books are worn. The solution is to put hundreds of books and resources into a single tablet. Perhaps you received a new tablet this holiday and don t need your old one. Why not donate it to a Cuban family. For more information contact Fernando Ortiz at or ortizl@andrews.edu or simply bring your tablet or cash donations to the MDiv office at the Seminary. On behalf of a Cuban family, pastor or student, Gracias! PMC Homebound Ministry Members of the PMC Homebound Ministry Team recently delivered Holiday bags to many people on our homebound list. Thank you, Dick and Bonnie Proctor at Library and Educational Services, for the inspirational books you provided. We also appreciated the apples donated by Dave Pagel and the oranges given to us by Apple Valley. Thanks to the many people who baked cookies to add to the bags. 15 OPERATING EXPENSE MOMMY AND ME BY ROSEMARY BAILEY T here is something about the gathering together that lifts the spirits of individuals. We gather together for weddings and funerals, for parties and work bees. As Adventists we gather together with our community of faith on a weekly basis. It is this regular gathering together that is cited as being one reason for Adventist health and life expectancy. LEARNING TO SHARE AND GET ALONG WITH OTHERS IS A VERY IMPORTANT SKILL. Other studies report that having social support networks help people deal with stress in their lives. However, stay-athome moms of young children can be highly isolated despite church attendance. Mommy and Me provides one way for mothers and grandmothers to be part of a supportive community. Many mothers in the PMC community did not grow up here and have left their family, friends, and home churches far behind. Mommy and Me provides a place to meet other mothers and become part of a group. There are benefits for the children who attend as well. Learning to share and get along with others is a very important skill that playgroups help children to develop. The children enjoy playing with different toys and even the babies have fun watching the bigger children play. Children also are exposed to fun crafts, songs, and stories. In this informal setting, mothers can chat and connect in a way that is not possible within the structure of Sabbath morning services. Mommy and Me is really Mommy and WE building community together.
