Over 1,200 young adults from across Germany and Europe gathered to meet and sleep and eat in a large public school (closed for the Easter holiday) to celebrate their common bond in Christ and His mission for this third millennial world. While everything was in German, I was delighted with how bilingual (tri- and quad-lingual as well) the German young are. And I was personally blessed with a top-flight young German pastor-evangelist translator, Kris Lenart, who is church-planting in Austria. We did the arithmetic together and calculated that we preached (five sermons) and taught (four workshops) for a total of 13 hours side by side! It was a non-stop and Continued on 7 2

3 REVIVAL & REFORMATION LET GOD WORK IN YOU Friends, consider it a sheer gift when tests and challenges come at you from all sides. You know that under pressure your faith is forced into the open and shows its true colors. So don t try to get out of anything prematurely. Let it do its work so you become mature, well-developed, not deficient in any way. If you don t know what you re doing, pray to the Father. He loves to help. You ll get his help, and won t be condescended to when you ask for it. Ask boldly, believingly, without a second thought. People who worry their prayers are like wind-whipped waves. Don t think you re going to get anything from the Master that way, adrift at sea, keeping all your options open. When down-and-outers get a break, cheer! And when the arrogant rich are brought down, do not be surprised! Prosperity is as short-lived as a wildflower, so don t ever count on it. You know that as soon as the sun rises, pouring down its scorching heat, the flower withers. Its petals wilt and, before you know it, that beautiful face is a barren stem. Well, that s a picture of the prosperous life. At the very moment everyone is looking on in admiration, it fades away to nothing. Anyone who meets a testing challenge head-on and manages to stick it out is mighty fortunate. For such persons loyally in love with God, the reward is life and more life. Don t let anyone under pressure give in to evil saying, God is trying to trip me up. God is impervious to evil, and puts evil in no one s way. The temptation to give in to evil comes from us and only us. We have no one to blame but the leering, seducing flare-up of our own lust. Lust gets pregnant, and has a baby called sin. Sin grows up to adulthood, and becomes a real killer. So, my very dear friends, don t get thrown off course. Every desirable and beneficial gift comes out of heaven. The gifts are rivers of light cascading down from the Father of Light. There is nothing deceitful in God, nothing two-faced, nothing fickle. He brought us to life using the true Word, showing us off as the crown of all his creatures. James 1:2-18 [The Message] 3

4 OPERATING EXPENSES YOUTH SS / CHALLENGING OUR TEENS Seventh-day Adventism has the best of both applied and apocalyptic teachings. As a youth team, our goal this spring is to highlight these teachings in our Youth Sabbath School. In March we focused on four of Revelation s most exciting prophecies. This month we are spending time examining the applied truths in the Bible. What are the Bible standards for living a godly life? How does following God s guideline improve our lives? Our final spring series in May will focus on relationships and purity. We have invited Eric and Leslie Ludy to join us on Sabbath, May 12, at the Howard Performing Arts Center. The Ludy s widely known classic, When God Writes Your Love Story is one of the top selling Christian relationship books of all time. Youth of all faiths will be invited to this meeting. Check out the other exciting events scheduled for spring/summer. In June, we will have a fun Lock-in and there is an evangelistic mission trip to Panama planned for late July into early August. Youth rallies will be held on April 21 (Grand Rapids) and here at the Howard Performing Arts Center on May 12. We are also promoting the youth literature evangelism summer program a way young people can make money for their Christian education while spreading the gospel. PRAY That our youth will learn and live for Jesus MORE INFO Micheal Goetz / goetz@pmchurch.org OPERATING EXPENSES GIVE TO LINE 2 Goal to-date $164,234 Received to-date $129,756 (Received to-date 2011) $130,306 As of April 7,

5 MASTER PLAN OF EVANGELISM CHURCH 360 / RESULTS ARE IN For the last few months we ve been going through a process of selfdiscovery using the Church 360 survey tool. Over two hundred and fifty of you took part and last week we had the opportunity to share the results with the congregation. So what did we discover? The truth is that there is no simple answer. A church as large and as diverse as PMC has varied views on a lot of things, but we did notice a few trends that seemed to emerge. We don t have space here to share the details, but if you d like to see the report yourself, you can download it by visiting www. pmchurch.org/ church360. As you look at the report keep in mind a few things. Firstly, the charts show a percentage of agreement with the question. So if there s a number 11 next to a question, it means that 11% if the particular group agreed with that statement. Secondly, the responses are divided by five groups: Gov (church staff), LDR (Has a leadership position in the church), MEM (Member), NEW (member for less than three years), and OTH (none of the above). What will happen with the results? We will now be convening a group who will process through the results in detail and bring a list of recommendations. The whole goal of the process is to become a church that is more focused on its mission and that has a missionary posture towards the culture around it. If you have any questions about the report please let us know and we d be happy to answer any questions. PRAY That we will be more focused on our mission MORE INFO Rodlie Ortiz / ortiz@pmchurch.org MASTER PLAN OF EVANGELISM GIVE TO LINE 5 Goal to-date $36,078 Received to-date $24,439 (Received to-date 2011) $26,620 As of April 7,

6 CHRISTIAN EDUCATION RMES / FAITHFUL VOLUNTEERS Ruth Murdoch Elementary School offers so many exciting programs for our students. We have one-on-one reading time in the third grade, where students read to adults and vice versa. We offer trips to various orchards, the Andrews dairy, Greenfield Village, Camp Au Sable, and other destinations. Andrews University s Dining Services provides the students with a phenomenal hot lunch program. We have a full library, teacher s assistants, and ELL assistance for students who could benefit from it. What do all of these things have in common? They would not be possible without our faithful volunteers! The individuals that volunteer in our school are simply amazing! From grading papers to running an entire library system, they sacrifice their time and energy for the good of our students. What a great reflection of Christ s selfless character! National Volunteer Week is April If you would like to join the important work that is Adventist Education, contact RMES for more information. If you know someone who volunteers at RMES or anywhere else, take the time to tell them that they are appreciated and needed. PRAY A prayer of thanksgiving for the support our volunteers give to RMES MORE INFO David Waller / waller@andrews.edu CHRISTIAN EDUCATION GIVE TO LINE 3 Goal to-date $63,294 Received to-date $45,396 (Received to-date 2011) $42,826 As of April 7,

7 THE FOURTH WATCH CONTINUED packed weekend from stem to stern. But I came home joyfully exhausted and here s why. As I tweeted from the Congress (@DwightKNelson): These German young adults are energetic plus & committed to the hilt. They speak 2-4 languages, love Christ and want to win the world 2 him. As I have found the world over, there are thousands of young adults in the Seventh-day Adventist church who are eager to build a base within their culture to reach their generation for Jesus. My driver, Daniel Riek, a young mid-management team leader in Volkswagen-Audi, radiated a thoughtthrough enthusiasm for the mission of our community of faith there in Germany. Kingdom optimism-plus is what the young at YIM exuded. The YIM leaders, Marc and Wendy Englemann (both Andrews grad s I had Marc in a preaching class a few years ago), raised up this youth movement six years ago and have never looked back. And the growth and reach of YIM is evidence enough that the Holy Spirit is the wind in their sails. But what really set my own soul to singing was the response of the young adults to the appeals. We preached the Primetime series of teachings from the book of Acts (archived at The leadership asked for a series of altar calls and I am praising God with the statistics they shared with me Sunday night. Over 140 of those young made the decision to follow Christ in baptism. And two hundred and some (the 7 exact number which they passed along just before I went up for our final sermon escapes me) decided to give a year of their lives in volunteer service/ mission for God. What an answer to so many prayers! But one story in particular touched me. We gave three altar calls Sabbath morning, Saturday night and again on Sunday night. Watching us on live-streaming was a young adult who was unable to attend the Congress this year. After the Saturday night appeal (through a decision card, followed up with an altar call), this viewer (who, for obvious reasons, I am choosing to keep anonymous) wrote an to the YIM website. The is in German, but at the bottom of my copy is the English translation: I want to greet all YIM attendees, preachers and the YIM team. My name is. [It] means yearning... like the yearning I feel for God. I want to let you know that I was deeply touched by tonight s presentation. Until now I have not decided to become baptized, but tonight I was one of the many people that came forward [in this case via live-streaming]. The sentence no matter what your parents think of your decision really spoke to my heart. This was the reason why I hesitated to take this important step in my life. But tonight Jesus called me. Who is the young writer? I m a Moslem and my parents will not accept this decision of mine. Please remember me in your prayers. Praise God a young Moslem in Germany in front of a computer screen heard the call of Christ and Continued on 10

9 CALL TO WORSHIP Let us rejoice in the gifts of God: The gift of salvation for all creation, The gift of discipleship for those who choose it, The gift of new life in our hearts each day, The gift of peace waiting to be claimed. Let us rejoice in the gifts of God! THE WORD JOHN 19:31, NKJV Therefore, because it was the Preparation Day, that the bodies should not remain on the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was a high day), the Jews asked Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away. But when they came to Jesus and saw that He was already dead, they did not break His legs. But one of the soldiers pierced His side with a spear, and immediately blood and water came out. And he who has seen has testified, and his testimony is true; and he knows that he is telling the truth, so that you may believe. For these things were done that the Scripture should be fulfilled, Not one of His bones shall be broken. And again another Scripture says, They shall look on Him whom they pierced. MUSIC ALIVE SIMPLE GIFTS Often thought to be a traditional melody rather than to be by a known composer, SIMPLE GIFTS actually was composed by Elder Joseph Bracket, Jr. and dates from Brackett was an elder of The United Society of Believers in Christ s Second Appearing, commonly known as The Shakers. Brackett was born and died in Maine, living a long life. His words for the melody include the following: Tis the gift to be simple, tis the gift to be free / Tis the gift to come down where we ought to be, / And when we find ourselves in the place just right, / Twill be in the valley of love and delight. This melody became widely known outside of Shaker circles starting only approximately one century after its origin. 9

Such is the work of the Holy Spirit! The Congress theme, Know the Time, is simply a reminder to me that in this pivotal hour of history there is a generation of young eager to stand up and be counted for Jesus. High-techy, culturally savvy, and spiritually passionate they are eager to mobilize for the Kingdom. For that reason Andrews University, Pioneer Memorial Church and the Adventist church the world over must be the user-friendly launching pad for this generation that empowered by the Spirit can do what we have never been able to do before. 10
