2 welcome! Welcome to our commemoration of the cross. The joyful communion celebration is the highest expression of all Christian worship. It is at the Lord s Supper that the heart of the Christian is drawn closest to the heart of Jesus. Through the symbols of the towel, the bread and the cup, we bow together as a university and church family at the feet of Jesus, at the foot of His cross. May the Lord bless you deeply as you participate in this worship. I m I gonna shout, Shout, SHOUT! I m gonna sing, I m gonna shout, praise the Lord! It s one of the earliest songs that I can remember learning as a kid in Ruth Murdoch Elementary School. Pastor Gary Burns, our youth pastor at the time, would bring his guitar and we would get to sing so many exciting songs. Every time I sing songs from back then, I can t help but be drawn back to those moments of joy, innocence, and just being a kid. My kids have their distinct smells. When I hug them or tuck them in at night I take a deep breath. Weird, I know. Why? I want to seal up that moment. Some day I won t get to tuck them in anymore. Sealing up this memory in my treasure chest of amazing moments is something I can always revisit when they are all grown up. Just recently I was walking around in my neighborhood that is Continued on 7

3 I Will Do A New Thing SPIES When Joshua sent out spies to Jericho, he had apparently learned that just selecting the head leaders of the tribes was not a good strategy for consensus. So he handpicked two men just for this spy mission. These men do not have names and shortly disappeared into history. They went to Jericho and lodged in the house of the harlot Rahab. Being spies, they obviously did not want to attract attention and the natural place in a pagan town for male travelers to stay would have been with a prostitute. I am trying to visualize what happened when they came into Jericho and what a committed Israelite would have thought if he watched the two men talking with Rahab and then following her. In the providence of God, the men unknowingly found someone who had faith and trust in their own God the God of Israel. But from any observer, this would not be readily apparent it certainly was not apparent even to the spies until later. This scenario reminded me of when Hosea went looking for his wife (Hosea 3). Where did he have to go to try to find her? How many church members saw where he was going? How much criticism, gossip, and heated discussion was generated? These two historical examples are actually just a small glimpse into what Jesus has done for us. The whole universe has watched Him come to this dirty planet to rub shoulders with and touch the scum of the cosmos. And surprisingly none of them gossip about it; rather, they praise Him for doing it! Similarly, when we see fellow Christians doing something that looks questionable, what is our response? Do we pray for them and then go and ask them? Or do we prefer to tell someone else what we saw? Rumor and innuendo were two of the major tools Lucifer used to deceive perfect, intelligent angels, and that is why they are mentioned right in the middle of Paul s nasty list (Romans 1:28-32). Let us thank God for those who are willing to risk their reputations to talk to prostitutes, murderers, drunkards, and even go to great lengths to find a loved one to bring back home! We should thank them as well. Dennis Hollingsead Confess your trespasses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much. James 5:16 NKJV 3

4 Operating Fund SS Expense / Your Spiritual Breakfast Did you have breakfast this morning? I mean, a real breakfast, the kind that you can t spiritually live without. Jesus said, Man cannot live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God (Matthew 4:4). We have a tool that helps us to remember to eat God s manna. It s called the adult Sabbath School Bible Study Guide. This quarter our Bible Study Guide is titled Revival and Reformation. The theme goes right along with Pastor Dwight s challenge to pray daily for the Holy Spirit to do a new thing in our community. We have 32 adult Sabbath School classes that meet each week (see bulletin for locations). Many of these small Bible study groups follow the Bible Study Guides and are great places to discuss such questions as What are the conditions that God has given for the outpouring of His Spirit Do my prayers make a difference? In the main sanctuary, Sabbath school begins at 10:30 AM with a short program. There are testimonies, music, mission stories, and interesting reports. Earlier this quarter, we were inspired by Super centennial Papa Ethan Shelton, who is 110 years young. We learned that the ever-positive Papa Shelton enjoys the long life God has given him. He still gardens, golfs, and plays several musical instruments. Recently he began lessons in violin. Sabbath School Expense provides the funds for the 1,500+ Adult Sabbath School Bible Guides we need each quarter. It also purchases teacher training helps and Mission Spotlight DVDs. 5 Master Plan Of evangelism Youth Tent / DARKLIGHT This year in the Youth Tent at the Berrien County Youth Fair, we named our theme DarkLight. We answered the question: Where is God when I am hurting? When people entered the tent they saw black-lit messages written on the wall. A tour guide walked them through three different stations. At the first station the visitors touched with their hands the words on the wall I Am Here. That helped them to see that God is always with us even when we can t see Him. At the next station they listened to an audio recording of The Father s Love Letter which is a compilation of God s Bible promises. At the last station just before leaving the tent, they stopped at a table where they would write out their own letter to God in ultraviolet ink. This letter was just between them and God. Each evening we held a youth-led vespers program in the tent covering the Great Controversy theme. During the week we had nearly 1,300 visitors. I remember one day I was leading a boy through the tent and he seemed disinterested until he listened to the Father s love letter. When he had finished the letter I looked in his eyes and I saw that he was having a hard time not crying. God touched hearts through this ministry. 6 Christian Education AA / The Beginning of a New School Year Andrews Academy is pleased to announce the commencement of the 2013/14 school year with our current enrollment standing at 228 students. It s been exciting to see former Academy students reunite with friends and make new friendships with all the new students. One of the many blessings of living in a close-knit community is that its members so often rally together when challenges arise. AA continues to experience this kind of community camaraderie first-hand. Mr. Overstreet presented a challenge to Academy students, their parents, board members, the church and the greater Berrien Springs community, asking them to help sponsor families who are experiencing difficult financial times, but who want their children at Andrews Academy. In an overwhelming demonstration of support, church and community members continue this year to meet this challenge with contributions of thousands of dollars to help families afford tuition costs. Andrews Academy already has a scholarship program in place to help families in need, but the increased number of families grappling with financial hardships has created a greater need for funds more than the scholarship program could provide. We are so grateful to God and to the church community for their generosity. We solicit the community s prayers for Andrews Academy staff and students, that they have a successful year and may live with the reassurance of this year s theme United and Empowered by His Spirit. This is based on the words of Acts 1:8 which reads, But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth. 7 Pastor s Blog surrounded by really beautiful wild life. Everything from the sounds of wildlife and the smells of a humid forest, to the blast of green color transported me to Camp Au Sable. Camp is full of first moments for me. It was at a tween camp when our cabin got into a conversation about the end times. Counselor Nelson could see we were both intrigued and terrified as we talked, so he called the camps pastor at the time, Steve Yeagley, to come talk to us about hope. Camp is also where I dug my first trench at the Pathfinder Camporee with the Evergreens. It rained a lot that weekend. It is also where I took a lot of walks talking with God. Often on those walks, I didn t get the answer to my questions, but more importantly received the assurance that He was walking with me. God built us with senses. Senses that allow us to experience life as it happens. Step on a nail and you don t remember the pain it caused before; you feel the pain right there and then. Walk into your mom s kitchen just after she made Sabbath dinner and your mouth starts to water. At the same time, our senses remind us of the life that already happened. You remember how painful it was to step on the nail so you are extra careful as you maneuver around the lumber in the garage. In mom s kitchen, not only does your mouth water, but your heart is flooded with all the great conversations that took place, with friends from far and near. While we all have the same basic senses, how we each experience them continued is quite different. God designed us this way. A pleasant aroma for one is another person s nausea. This tension can be even more pronounced when it comes to sound, especially music. Music has time-stamped each of our lives in profound ways. So the same song can evoke two, or three, or four very different types of responses. The volatility of our associations to these sounds means we need to exercise that much more grace with one another. Our family is big comes from all over the world, spans eras, and is constantly in flux. That is to say, a good part of our makeup is transient. Our broad inclusivity is a miracle. A necessary miracle to minister to a world that needs to see Jesus lifted up. And that really is the rhythm that keeps us together. We are all here because we hope and plan and dream of the day when we can sing the same song, Worthy is the Lamb who was slain. I can almost here the blast of the trumpet sound. How about you? 7

As we His people meet to offer praise and prayer, May we find in fuller measure what it is in Christ we share. Here are symbols to remind us of our lifelong need of grace; Here are table, font and pulpit, here the Word has central place. Here our children find a welcome in the Shepherd s flock and fold, Here, as bread and wine are taken Christ sustains us as of old. You call me Teacher and Lord, and you are right, because that s what I am. And since I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash each other s feet. I have given you an example to follow. Do as I have done to you. I tell you the truth, slaves are not greater than their master. Nor is the messenger more important than the one who sends the message. Now that you know these things, God will bless you for doing them. John 13:12-17, NLT 8

9 worship continued...in communion Reading Madeline Johnston As they were eating, Jesus took some bread and blessed it. Then he broke it in pieces and gave it to the disciples, saying, Take it, for this is my body. And he took a cup of wine and gave thanks to God for it. He gave it to them, and they all drank from it. And he said to them, This is my blood, which confirms the covenant between God and his people. It is poured out as a sacrifice for many. I tell you the truth, I will not drink wine again until the day I drink it new in the Kingdom of God. Mark 14:22-25 NLT Praying Partaking...in committing Robert Johnston Hymn of Commitment Sent Forth by God s Blessing / 407 Benediction Offering Closing Voluntary José Bourget PMC Assistance Fund Lift High the Cross / Sydney Nicholson Presiding Pastor: Don Dronen; Organist: Kenneth Logan; Reader: James North Offertory: Andrews University Chorale; Stephen Zork, director Ashlee Dollar, graduate student director; Afia Asamoah, soprano music alive Refreshing This past weekend, anticipating this Sabbath, I explored combinations of hymns single stanzas about Jesus cross and blood, that could make a meaningful composite text for an original choral introit. I was struck by stanza 1 of no. 312, with its touching reference to Calvary s flowing fountain and healing stream, connected with stanza 2 of no. 524, with its beautiful imagery of plunging beneath the flood. Today s introit is mostly about one s response to the cross (preceded by organ music, with adopted title and interpretation seeming to allude to Jesus great suffering). On a personal note, I have found contemplating words and creating music in this introit to be as a real oasis for me. I hope that this music, Jesus, Keep Me Near the Cross, blesses others today with refreshment and courage. 9
