WELCOME! A new-school-year welcome to Pioneer! Your new spiritual home-awayfrom-home. September has just begun and life around here is already a full-court press (to borrow an analogy from basketball)! Which is why you and I need this hour of praise, prayer, and power. Which is also why we really couldn t live without this Day number seven. And so on this Sabbath Day the Lord s Day welcome into the heart of Jesus. A heart that is seen in his face. A face that is seen, when, in his name, we gather to gaze upon him. In that upward look, we become changed from the inside out by his grace, peace, faith, and hope. Look into the face of Jesus this morning and listen for what he will quietly whisper to you. The Dark Night Rises but do we comprehend how dark this night? Two s one at the beginning of the summer and the other at the end have set in motion a chain of thoughts. Maybe for you, too. The first came from a young friend of mine, a student at this university, who is in Bangkok, Thailand, on a short-term mission: Hello Pastor Dwight Doing student missions over here in Thailand this semester has been quite eye opening. Before I ever left I thought to myself that all was good out in the mission field... however, there are still great needs out here. Before I left I used to think that places like North Korea were the only locations left to be reached by the gospel, yet I m working here in Bangkok (city of millions) and there is so much need spiritually. Even people in this (what we call) reached area have no idea who Jesus is other Continued on 7

REVIVAL & REFORMATION PRAYER NEEDS & REQUESTS ome unto me, all ye that labor Cand are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light Matthew 11: [KJV]. Wash you, make you clean; put away the evil of your doings from before mine eyes; cease to do evil; Learn to do well; seek judgment, relieve the oppressed, judge the fatherless, plead for the widow. Come now, and let us reason together, saith the Lord: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool Isaiah 1:16-18 [KJV]. Germain, an international student currently working in the Midwest, desires to start the MDiv program here at Andrews University. He and many others have the desire and academic capability, but lack necessary finances to start and complete the program. Please pray that God will help Germain and others like him find the necessary resources to begin and complete their educational journey. Students, please pray: That you will be a blessing every day to someone around you, a fellow student, a staff member, your teachers, and your dean. For God s blessing on your study time and class lectures, that He will bring to your remembrance those things necessary for good grades. Faculty and staff, please pray: Every day that you may be God s ambassador to a student, that you might influence many to see God s love working through your life. Church members, please pray: That misunderstandings become reconciled as you seek forgiveness for your part in those problems. That God will show you what to do each day to further His kingdom on this campus, in Berrien Springs, and in Berrien County. Don t bargain with God. Be direct. Ask for what you need. This isn t a cat-andmouse, hide-and-seek game we re in. If your child asks for bread, do you trick him with sawdust? If he asks for fish, do you scare him with a live snake on his plate? As bad as you are, you wouldn t think of such a thing. You re at least decent to your own children. So don t you think the God who conceived you in love will be even better? Matthew 7:7-11 [The Message] 3

OPERATING FUND FAMILY LIFE / A CONVERSATION ABOUT MARRIAGE Many delightful conversations about marriage long-term marriage took place on Sunday, August 19 at the first-ever gathering of PMC member couples who have been married fifty years or longer. In addition to conversations around the tables, there was opportunity for people to share those things for which they are especially thankful in their marriages and in their partners. The overall atmosphere was one of thankfulness for not only the ways God has led but also reflection on the good choices, with God s help, that they have made day-by-day, year-by-year. Those in attendance who have been married the longest, 64 years, were Russell & Phyllis Staples, Andy & Judy Snyder and Arne & Mildred Swanson. Responding to the invitation to all local SDA churches, John & Helen Schlaman, from the Saint Joseph Church, said they believe they are the only ones in their church who have been married 50 years or more. What a blessing that Pioneer Memorial Church has an abundance of couples who have been married 50 years and longer and who are still vital and involved members of our congregation. Beginning with a delicious brunch served at the AU Terrace Café, and ending with a special prayer by Pastor Arne Swanson, expressions of appreciation for this opportunity and hopefulness that this will happen again, ended a delightful time together. This event may be the beginning of a new tradition at PMC; and we look forward to planning for next year, with even more than the twenty-two couples who were able to attend this time. PRAY That God will strengthen the marriages in our church MORE INFO Susan Murray / don.sue2717@sbcglobal.net OPERATING FUND GIVE TO LINE 2 Goal to-date $387,123 Received to-date $333,721 (Received to-date 2011) $328,438 As of August 25,

MASTER PLAN OF EVANGELISM HEALTH MINISTRIES / HEALTH TENT REPORT During the week of August 13 to 18, the Michigan Conference district nine churches set up their annual health tent at the Berrien County Youth Fair. Although volunteers were hard to find at first, more than 125 persons from area churches pitched in to make the operation of the tent a success. The tent attracted fair goers who were entertained by a ring toss game, found out what their health age was, relaxed with a chair massage, spent time in prayer, learned how much sugar and fat are in various fast foods, and received information about events going on at our church. Despite the rainy weather, we had between 500 and 1200 people come through the tent each day to learn more about healthy living and meet the smiling faces of church members. Each volunteer talked with an average of 18 visitors to the tent. In most cases each visitor had an opportunity to mingle with at least 3-4 volunteers as they partook in the tent s many activities. It was a blessing for many and we look forward to building on the ideas from this year. Thank you to all who helped and prayed for the ministry. Please put on your calendar that there will be a potluck brunch for those who volunteered on September 9 from at the Berrien Township Park on Rangeline Road. We will contact you with more details. PRAY For the contacts made at the fair MORE INFO Paul & Shelli Meulemans / health@pmchurch.org MASTER PLAN OF EVANGELISM GIVE TO LINE 5 Goal to-date $85,041 Received to-date $65,576 (Received to-date 2011) $83,125 As of August 25,

CHRISTIAN EDUCATION ANDREWS ACADEMY / YOU WILL NEVER WALK ALONE Andrews Academy is pleased to announce the commencement of the 2012/13 school year with our current enrollment standing at 222 students. There has been a lot of excitement in the air as former academy students reunite with friends and make new friendships with all the new students. We solicit the community s prayers for Andrews Academy staff and students, that they have a successful year and to live with the reassurance of this year s theme You Will Never Walk Alone. This is based on the PRAY That God s presence will bless each student and each classroom of our school MORE INFO Robert Overstreet / overstrr@andrews.edu words of Joshua 1:9 which reads... for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go. Andrews Academy has many international students and they may sometimes feel lonely. A parent of an international student recently ed this... I know this motto wasn t chosen with our daughter in mind but it is SO reassuring to know that as she is living miles away from us, she will be reminded that she Never Walks Alone. 7 THE FOURTH WATCH than some word maybe they ve heard on the Hollywood movies that roll through here. Sure there are little pockets of missionaries here and there all over the world yet there is SO much work to be done. I m doing video stuff mostly with a little graphic design, and I m not in the middle of nowhere.... Yes, there are regions out in the middle of the jungle that need to be reached, but people need to realize that there are mission fields in the cities as well. Missions isn t the typical out-in-theboonies kind of thing anymore.... I suppose my point is if you have a sermon series anytime soon that has any reference to missions or spreading the gospel, tell them the truth. It s like nothing is happening out here. We need workers.... I m really getting tired of this world. Let s finish this work.... Pieter Damsteegt. Then a few days ago I received an from someone I ve never met. But he and Pieter are obviously on the same page: Hello Pastor I ll keep it short. I m 25, doing mission work in Africa. From Boise, ID. Preached in my first evangelism campaign last month in the DRC [Democratic Republic of the Congo], in the midst of 20,000 UN troops protecting Goma from attacks by a huge rebel army. Was with a team of 19 other speakers, thousands were baptized, 87 at my site. Will be in Ghana in November for another series with a team of 44 other speakers, and am currently in Rwanda doing work.... The teachings [he listens to our have definitely reinforced my desire above all else, that CONTINUED God s Spirit be poured out. So we can tell the world and go home.... Just a few thoughts on how I see some of this reality: 1) I picture those whom the Spirit has been poured out on will be literally working to spread the Gospel from 4 a.m. to midnight every day. Working on minimal food, but maximum energy. All OTHER things in our lives will need to be dropped at once; 2) Timidness as a characteristic will be nonexistent; 3) Spiritual wisdom will reach new heights for those with the full power of the Holy Spirit.... I pray for you, Pastor.... Looking forward to meeting you, very soon after the Latter Rain. Trevor Loucks. Back to Pieter for a moment in a March blog he unburdened his heart over the lost in Bangkok: In walking back to the mission compound I could not help but shed a couple tears. Here in the middle of the world there is so much darkness, and the candles that could be out there or any other dark place shining in the darkness are wrapped up in other lighted rooms, if you catch my drift.... Whether or not you choose to join the ranks of reaching others and spreading the gospel is up to you, but as long as I have breath in me, there s at least one more person somewhere that I have to reach, and I have faith that God will lead me to that person. ( wordpress.com/2012/03/30/youthink-its-happening-but-its-not/) Two young men, one solitary passion even as The Dark Night Rises their eloquence the obvious fruit of their immersion into this world for Christ. But then what more need be said than, Here am I send me? 7

THE WORD 1 THESSALONIANS 5:1-5 NIV Now, brothers and sisters, about times and dates we do not need to write to you, for you know very well that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night. While people are saying, Peace and safety, destruction will come on them suddenly, as labor pains on a pregnant woman, and they will not escape. But you, brothers and sisters, are not in darkness so that this day should surprise you like a thief. You are all children of the light and children of the day. We do not belong to the night or to the darkness. MUSIC ALIVE WACHET AUF! ake up! is a clarion call in Wtoday s worship services, enhanced through composers creativity. Philipp Nicolai wrote the striking original text during an appalling epidemic in Germany in the late 1590s that claimed 1,300 lives over seven months. (See hymn 210.) His parsonage overlooked a churchyard where often more than two dozen people per day were buried. But what is Nicolai s focus? It is Jesus story of the wise and foolish maidens: some ready, some sleeping. Wake Up! says Nicolai ( Wachet Auf! ). An organ setting of the melody that begins the services, bearing a 1996 copyright, was crafted by American composer Wayne Wold. As played today, it uses the authoritative tone of the PMC organ s Centennial Trumpet in bold proclamation: Wake up! New Worship Times Effective TODAY!
