2 WELCOME! Winter s nearly gone! After all, spring break begins for all three campuses next week which leaves the winter of 2014 little choice but to leave. (Or so every resident of Michigan prays!) But never mind the fleeting seasons, for we enter into the presence of One today who towers above all our seasons. Jesus Christ, the same yesterday, today and forever (Hebrews 13:8). Hallelujah! Which being interpreted means, Praise our Creator! As campus and community join in worship before our Maker, join me in throwing wide the doors of our minds and hearts and spirits, so Christ might indeed come in this Day. And stay today and forever. After losing the well fought 120-pound title match, the loser, Malik Stewart, went over to the opponent s dad and gave him a hug. Stewart lost his dad to a heart attack when he was just 7 years old. Mitchell McKee s dad, the father s winner of the match, is dying of cancer. Reflecting on the match, Stewart said, I got a little teary because I lost the match, and I knew the hard times he was going through. It s not that Stewart didn t care to win, but because of the larger battles he had faced in life, he knew the pain of losing the match was secondary to the war that his opponent was facing. His coach summed it up well when said, For a sophomore in high school 2 Continued on 7

3 I WILL DO A NEW THING WHEN DOUBTING GOD When you re experiencing doubt doubt that God exists, or that He keeps His promises where in the Bible can you turn for reassurance? The following list comes from biblegateway.com and was generated by visitors who shared the Bible verses they turn to when they struggle with doubt. At least three of these are probably on your favorites list as well. Here are the top five Bible passages from the NIV they recommended: 1. For I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart (Jeremiah 29:11-13). 2. Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the LORD, He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust... 4 OPERATING FUND CMRC / MINISTRY TO CHILDREN AND YOUTH Over the past two decades the Children s Ministry Resource Center (CMRC) has played a vital role in supporting hundreds of PMC volunteers who minister to our children and youth. Whether the ministry is Sabbath school, Pathfinders, Adventurers, or special children s programming, the CMRC provides core learning materials and supplies such as markers, crayons, glue, colored paper, cardstock, a photocopier, and more. Additionally, CMRC maintains a biblical costume collection that SS classes can use to help bring Bible stories to life. The Center also maintains a photo and poster collection, provides background paper for bulletin boards, and maintains a growing collection of die cuts that help reduce the need to cut out common shapes by hand. The CMRC was founded by Dr. Donna Habenicht and until 2013 she served as its Director. In mid-2013, I volunteered to assume the directorship of the CMRC. I have worked in children s Sabbath schools and Pathfinders for many years in addition to working as an elementary school teacher in the Adventist system for 13 years. With Dr. Habenicht, I coauthored Teaching the Faith which was published by the Review and Herald. I am happy to be working with the dedicated volunteers who ensure the smooth daily running of the CMRC. Without their dedication, the Center would be unable to accomplish its mission to serve the children of PMC. If the Spirit impresses you, we are always seeking special donations to the CMRC to support some of our projects which don t fit within the constraints of our annual budget. 5 MASTER PLAN OF EVANGELISM PRISON MINISTRY / DO YOU WANT TO BE FREE? Every time I have the privilege of visiting someone in the Berrien County jail, I find that the question that really opens up a dialogue is: Do you want to be free? Regardless of why anyone finds him or herself in this predicament, fair or unfair, whether there is an admission of guilt or not, everyone wants to be free. Liberty... Who has liberty in this world? How opportune it is to introduce Jesus to someone who has been deprived of his freedom. To present the Jesus who came to preach good tidings to the poor. To bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners (Isaiah 61:1 NIV). Surprisingly, in participating with the team of PMC prison ministries, I find that no human being is free from the attacks of the power of evil, behind bars or not, we all cannot be truly free without the Jesus of the Bible. Do you want to be free? Do you want to tell others about this Jesus? Who can set us all free? Who can give us all, healing, peace and liberty forever? Would you be willing to pray for us, support us, or join this ministry? I hope you would; we thank you. For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me (Matthew 25:35-36 NIV). 6 CHRISTIAN EDUCATION RMES / ADOPT A PILOT PROJECT Arlene Bailey has a passion for her students to not only succeed academically, but to also discover the many practical applications for what they learn in class. She was excited about Southwest Airlines Adopt a Pilot program a program where once a year the airlines pilots volunteer to visit Grade 5 classrooms for a 4-week period. Pilots talk to students about many aspects of their job including the education and skills required. Tim Case, a pilot with Southwest Airlines, has been visiting RMES as part of this program for the past 3 years. This is his second year visiting Mrs. Bailey s classroom. Students look forward with anticipation to the weekly visits of Mr. Case and Barney. Barney is a pilot teddy bear from Mrs. Bailey s classroom collection of teddy bears. Barney was chosen to accompany Mr. Case wherever he goes, whether it is flying cross-country, inspecting planes before take-off, or writing flight reports while staying overnight in hotels along the flight routes. When they return to the classroom, the students can t wait to see and hear about their exciting adventures. Mr. Case shares pictures and videos of the flights he and Barney have taken since his last visit to the classroom. He also shares with the students the importance of Math, Science, Geography, and other subjects. Using maps, pictures, distance charts, and calculators, students keep track of how far Mr. Case and Barney have traveled. So far they have traveled 18,026 miles in a 3-week period! 7 PASTOR S BLOG he can see a lot of the big picture which is pretty rare nowadays. Pretty rare nowadays... That s another way of saying, counter-cultural. Many of the things that campus communities like ours can get caught up in is how we each interpret what it means to be counter-cultural, or set-apart, or remnant-like. And with some topics it feels like we just ruminate over them. They keep coming up. Music, worship styles, competitive sports, modesty, jewelry, entertainment, movies, Sabbath rest, Sabbath activity, etc. The conversations go back and forth about what it means to be in the world but not of the world. In the last several months, many within our community are in the fight of their lives over marriage, health, violence, and drugs. Some have lost the battle and while we are hopeful we are also hurt. Isn t this the nature and cost of the real war? That we CONTINUED live in a world that is broken and breaking, that leaves people alone and desperate, that is damned and damning. So, what to do? Perhaps we can take our cue from something that God shared with His prophet Samuel. For the Lord does not see as man sees (1 Samuel 16:7). The rest of the verse is good, but the first part is enough. God sees things differently then we do. And for many things what we can see, we see through a glass darkly. And while everything that is true deserves a good fight and we shouldn t compromise, the wise man tells us that there is a time for everything. In other words, maybe we are at a time to step back and see the big picture God shows us for such a time as this. The broad strokes from the enemy are causing plenty of damage in our lives, in our families, and in our communities. So lets arm ourselves with healing grace and the gospel that saves. 7

Now the day of march has come and we must go out to follow the leadership of the King of kings, to conquer the world under His banner. 15 HEALTH NUGGETS FEELING THIRSTY? Water. Have you had some today? Our body consists of 60% water and every system depends on it. Symptoms of dehydration can include headache, dry mouth, dry skin and can leave us feeling tired or sleepy. It can even trick us into thinking we re hungry when we re actually thirsty. Drinking water has many benefits, but they are often overlooked until we start getting symptoms and end up feeling miserable. How much water should you be drinking per day? Take your weight and multiply it by 2/3 (example: 175 lbs. x 2/3=117 oz.). You will need to adjust your total water intake if you work out during the day (example: If you work out for 30 minutes per day add an additional 12 oz. to your total water intake). HELPFUL TIPS 1. Filling up a water bottle before bed helps cut down on the getting ready time in the morning routine. 2. Keep a glass of water on your nightstand and drink a cup right after you wake up and again before going to bed (16 oz. additional water). 3. Drink 2 cups of water before each meal (48 oz. additional water). 4. Measure the amount you drink with a water bottle. 5. Set up a daily refill schedule to keep you on track with your hydration goals. CHALLENGE Combat dehydration this week and start a new healthy habit for life.
