All that s left of the election on this morning after is a handful of janitors in Chicago and Boston, sweeping up the scattered confetti or packing it away for another day. I realize we live in a world where life pretty much is defined by winning and losing, the victors and the vanquished. But in all candor, wouldn t it be glorious if we could come up with a way that would excise the sting of defeat from sports and politics and academics and business and church and relationships and life? You say but that s simply the way it is on this planet you win some, you lose some. Perhaps. But winsome it isn t, is it? And besides, who says we have to? After all in a land faraway and a time long ago there once was a Kingdom where there were no losers. Nobody suffered the sting of defeat or the agony of loss, simply because in that Continued on 7

3 REVIVAL & REFORMATION WE PRAY FOR OUR CHILDREN I almost cried. Two weeks ago on the edge of the Mediterranean, Melanie and I were two of five Adventists joining eight Jews in welcoming the Sabbath. After a few prayers and songs we all watched while the only parent-child combo stood and with hands stretched over the head of the child, the parent recited the blessing. It was touching. This Jewish tradition is on to something very powerful. Ellen G. White wrote in Child Guidance: The youth and children who have praying parents have been greatly privileged, for such have an opportunity to know and love God. But in our community it doesn t stop there. When I sat down with our Sabbath School teachers last week, I heard them express a passion to bless children and families. I also see the same passion in our teachers at RMES. I often hear them praying over their students. From home to church to school, we pray on. Respected Christian researcher, George Barna, reminds us that our children need constant exposure to prayer, especially before they reach high school. He believes that this maximizes their opportunity for a life-long commitment to God. Barna will be here on campus Wednesday, November 14 and we invite you to come and hear him. The pastoral leadership has two goals for this event: We want to affirm all you who faithfully work with our children. And secondly, we want to encourage you to be intentional as the home, the school, and the church work together to grow our children into true disciples of Jesus. Invite your friends in the community outside of our faith to come too. This is a Contagious Adventist event. Join us in praying and participating on November 14. Please pray: and its leaders. grow in Jesus. they continue to learn. teachers as they work with our own. congregation that have slipped away, that they might feel the need to come back to Jesus. presentations. 3

4 OPERATING FUND WOMEN S MINISTRIES / KNITTING FOR JESUS Looking for something to do indoors this fall and winter? Knitting is the perfect hobby to pursue. Better yet, pursue it with new friends and for a meaningful purpose. Knitting Hearts Together (KHT), a Women s Ministries outreach group, meets regularly to knit and crochet items like the shawl modeled by Cynthia Burrill. The items are given to folks in the community who are ill or have lost a loved one. Finished products are delivered to recipients by either one or two KHT members who take time to pray with them. The Holy Spirit often directs them to give the right item to the right person at the right time. In one instance, a shawl was made for a lady who had lost her mom, related Alice Williams. But somehow as hard as we tried, we couldn t connect with her. Eventually, the shawl was given to her on the oneyear anniversary of her mother s death. It was so meaningful to her that she received it on that special day. The Holy Spirit arranged the timing. It is not necessary to buy materials to participate. Donated yarn, crochet hooks, knitting needles and patterns are provided. You don t have to know how to knit either. We can teach you, said Lyn MacCarty. I didn t know how to knit or crochet when I joined. I heard one of the ladies say she learned to knit at the age of 4. I decided if a 4-year-old could learn, I could learn. For more information, please call Alice Williams. KHT has members as old as 93, as well as teens. Come join the fun! 5 MASTER PLAN OF EVANGELISM BENTON HARBOR SOUP KITCHEN / IT S HUNGER I recently read an from someone at work, writing about an extended tour of China they took with a group. This is the sort of thing that travelers such as Hudson Taylor and Elizabeth Burton to Pearl Buck could only imagine. It sounded as if the tour was well-organized and the accommodations were good. Being Americans, though, there were those in the group who complained about something: the food. The food was prepared in the Chinese style, and for vegetarians such as my correspondent, allowances and substitutions were made to prevent using meat, especially unclean meat. But it would seem that, to some on the tour, the diet tended to get a little monotonous after a point. Never mind that they were tourists in a foreign land with access to the local style of cooking. They were ready to complain. It made me think about our regular turn at the Benton Harbor Soup Kitchen. We ve more or less settled on the same menu items to prepare every month. So do some of the other churches and organizations that take a turn at putting something together on a regular basis; they have their set menu as well. Part of it may be due to the feeling that if it goes over well, you don t change the game. And I ve never had a complaint about the repetition of the menu. On the contrary, our entrée has fans among those who show up. Because it s not tourism that brings them to the Soup Kitchen, it s hunger. And we re there to do something about it, if only for one meal and one day. PRAY That as we serve others God will transform them and us MORE INFO Daniel J. 6 CHRISTIAN EDUCATION AA / RECONNECTING, REUNITING, REMEMBERING EVERY time I read the story of the prodigal son, my eyes water. I have this mental image in my mind of the son topping the hill, the father and son seeing each other They run They embrace Why? Because the son has come home. There is no place like home! Home is my favorite place to be any day of the week. Each time I go home, my eyes light up, and the excitement within me intensifies, simply because home is where I am safe with those I love. A few weeks ago, Andrews Academy celebrated its annual Home Coming or Alumni Weekend. The theme for the event was Reconnect, Reunite, and Remember. Many were able to reconnect with friends, some were reunited for the first time since that day they walked down the graduation aisle, and many memories were shared. My trust is that Andrews Academy played a positive role in the lives of the many smiling faces I saw. The lively laughter, the chats that took place between friends, and the showing off of children was a joy to see. I pray that as the alumni walked the halls of Andrews Academy again, they felt the excitement and safety of returning to a happy home. Coming Home is what this life we live today is all about. There will be a home-coming day for all of us that will be more exciting than any alumni weekend, no matter how much fun you find those to be. That day will be when we see our King Jesus come to take us home. My hope is that when we see Him, we will run and embrace our Savior, Jesus. PRAY That our school will feel like home to our students MORE INFO Robert Overstreet / overstrr@andrews.edu CHRISTIAN EDUCATION GIVE TO LINE 3 Goal to-date $198,264 Received to-date $166,681 (Received to-date 2011) $176,285 As of November 3,

7 THE FOURTH WATCH Kingdom the rules of the game were that there is no game. Life is simply a glorious opportunity to spend yourself for the sake and success of everyone else. And so because no one set out to win, nobody had to be a loser. From the throne on down, self-giving was the secret of their happiness and the modus operandi of their peace. But you know the story well the tranquility of that peaceful and contented Kingdom was shattered the day someone made the dark decision that winning is really what matters most, winning at any cost. Which, of course, also meant losing at a very high cost a cost so high that it eventually cost the Kingdom a lost planet and a dying King. But before He died, Jesus taught the secret of His Kingdom in those CONTINUED radical words, Whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me and the gospel will save it (Mark 8:35 NIV). Given this fallen culture, the King describes life in terms of winning and losing. But did you notice, the way to win is to lose? For whoever wants to be great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be slave of all (Mark 10:43, 44). Gone now the sting of defeat, simply because you refuse to make winning your goal and you choose to make losing yourself in service to others your mission. Why, if every one of us chose to live by Christ s radical credo, the confetti we d be sweeping up would always be for someone else. 7

11 THE WORD JAMES 5:7-11 NRSV Be patient, therefore, beloved, until the coming of the Lord. The farmer waits for the precious crop from the earth, being patient with it until it receives the early and the late rains. You also must be patient. Strengthen your hearts, for the coming of the Lord is near. Beloved, do not grumble against one another, so that you may not be judged. See, the Judge is standing at the doors! As an example of suffering and patience, beloved, take the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord. Indeed we call blessed those who showed endurance. You have heard of the endurance of Job, and you have seen the purpose of the Lord, how the Lord is compassionate and merciful. MUSIC ALIVE CARILLON The name carillon, as used for an instrument, refers to a set of bells played generally by one player from a large set of keys. The tones of a full-sized carillon occupy a fairly wide range from high to low, and the lowest bells of such a carillon are extremely large and heavy. Carillons generally are best heard in an out-ofdoors context. However, handbells can imitate the sound of a carillon successfully, as in today s Opening Voluntary. And joyous indeed is the sound, though reduced in scope. Bells small bells proclaim in bright tones a joyous frame for Christian worship today. The joy continues in Bwana Asifiwe, an original composition with a Swahili title that means Praise the Lord. 11
