2 WELCOME! And to all our visitors joining us this festive International Student Sabbath, welcome! Many of our University students have crossed the oceans to be here today. But whether you ve crossed the street or the states to join us, we re delighted you re a part of our Pioneer Family today. Join us downstairs in the Commons immediately following second service for a home-cooked vegetarian meal. Poor Mary Barra, the new CEO of General Motors. On Capitol Hill for a grilling by a House subcommittee this week, what could she say? Since February GM has recalled 2.6 million cars because of a faulty ignition switch. As it turns out thirteen deaths are now attributed to the defective switch, which can cause the engine to cut off in traffic, disabling the power steering, power brakes and air bags and making it difficult to control the vehicle (South Bend Tribune ). Thirteen deaths, 2.6 million automobiles recalled all because of a small switch. Engineers, according to company records, knew about the defective switch back in 2005 but management concluded that the costs for replacing the switch were not an acceptable business case (i.e., it cost too much money). The cost of a replacement switch? 57 cents (plus labor). Thirteen deaths 2 Continued on 7

3 I WILL DO A NEW THING THE COVENANT REMINDER Have you ever wondered why God gave Israel the rite of circumcision? Many think this was an arbitrary demand by God for some mysterious reason, and obviously it became a ritual that to most Jews was righteousness and salvation in and of itself. But we know that our God is always very practical and has good reasons for what He does. Is it possible that because of the rampant idolatry and sexual perversions of the nations around and among them, that circumcision was a constant Covenant Reminder of their promise to follow the one true God? At the least, any young male Israelite tempted to visit a temple prostitute would surely have a reminder forced upon his mind maybe even mentioned by the temple priestess. As disgusting as this scenario is, it can help us understand an important device we can use in the combat against sin. Assuming that we have made the baptismal commitment to God, to follow Him with all our hearts, minds, and souls, is there any physical thing we can do or wear that can be a personal and private reminder of our covenant with our Father God? (1 Chronicles 16:14, 15) All of us have sins addictions that we struggle with. I think this may have led to the sudden popularity of the What Would Jesus Do wrist bands. Unfortunately that was a passing fad probably because of its open and declarative nature. For a covenant reminder to work, it must be 3 something you have personally decided to do or wear that is meaningful between you and God. Other decisions or covenants we have made to ourselves, our families, or friends that can help us remember our covenant with God are: the Sabbath, the communion service, our spouse, our children, offerings (a covenant by sacrifice) even footwashing can be a reminder of baptism and our commitment to love and serve God through those around us. And what about God s promises to keep His covenant with us? Look up the following for the answer: Genesis 9:15 Psalm 103:17, 18 Ezekiel 16:60 How do you plan to remind yourself of your covenant commitments? Whoever wanders off the straight and narrow ends up in a congregation of ghosts. You re addicted to thrills? What an empty life! The pursuit of pleasure is never satisfied. PROVERBS 21:16-18 THE MESSAGE

4 OPERATING FUND YOUTH SABBATH SCHOOL / CASSETTES AND IPHONES Cassettes were how we listened to music in Today we use our iphones (which coincidently are about the same size as cassettes). Some of us may still have a machine that could take and make sense of a cassette, but there are many people who would not be able to use a cassette if we gave it to them. Here is the point. We have a generation of iphones... and we see the need for iphones to communicate God s message. Our goal in Youth Sabbath School is to take some of us who might be more like cassettes (in this illustration) and digitize the message of the Bible so some iphones (younger people) can take and share the message with a demographic that might be able to connect with it when it comes from their peers. Our plan this school-year in our Youth Sabbath School is to form leadership teams of teachers made up of highschool students working together with an adult mentor. During the week the mentor sits down with the team and together they plan an approach. On Sabbath, the mentor becomes the assistant, and the young person takes the lead. Joy Ngugi, one of those teen leaders, believes it is working. She says other teens can relate and open up and talk more when it comes from a teacher in their age group. An added bonus is that this method impacts the teen leader. Ivy Ochieng has been leading a group and believes it has helped her understand how to communicate God s word to youth and adults much more effectively. 5 MASTER PLAN OF EVANGELISM HARBOR OF HOPE / STUDENTS OUT TO CHANGE Great things are happening with the youth in Benton Harbor! Students Out to Change the World (SOTC) is Harbor of Hope s teen ministry that provides mentoring and discipleship to youth ages It has been a great blessing to observe the growth in each youth I work with, to see their eagerness to get out into their own community and give back. This academic year the youth served at the Homeless Shelter and the Orchard Grove Nursing Home in Benton Harbor. They met, prepared and packed meals for the homeless shelter. Once there, they led out in sharing poems and motivational verses for the homeless. Their nursing home experience has heightened their desire to serve, as they were truly able to experience the joy of serving. We had a great time interacting with the elderly, playing games, listening to stories, sharing songs and poems. Each young person has a mentor who spends time with them, and finds opportunities to share Christ. This program has proven to impact the youth at a personal level, and helps them to overcome many of the difficulties and temptations that they are constantly faced with. We are grateful to God for the volunteers who take the time to serve in SOTC; without them, reaching the youth here would not be possible. 6 CHRISTIAN EDUCATION AA / GUATEMALAN MISSION TRIP Forty-three students recently returned from a twelve-day music mission trip to Guatemala. During each concert, students gave testimonies and Pastor Micheal Goetz presented a short spiritual message. The welcoming spirit of the Guatemalans warmed the hearts of our musicians, and as the tour progressed, they played with renewed energy. A majority of the concerts were held in SDA churches and local members invited many of their friends in the community to come. In some cases, the majority of the attendees were not of the Adventist faith. On Thursday evening students presented a concert at the Soccer Stadium of San Miguel Petapa where the National Symphony Orchestra of Guatemala was performing. A Guatemalan resident sent this message to Andrews Academy, We are thankful to God for the blessing of 43 missionaries who healed souls with their music. May God bless you abundantly in everything you do. Thank you, Andrews Academy, for sharing these marvelous students. Adults, children and youth were blessed with this music from heaven. Many of the Academy students said the presentation at the small orphanage in Guatemala was the highlight of their trip. The children there enjoyed spending time with them and their happy smiles were contagious. One of our teens shared, My trip to Guatemala was really good. I think God might be calling me to be a missionary one day. They need music teachers there and I think I want to do this. 7 THE FOURTH WATCH CONTINUED and a 2.6 million vehicle recall later is there anybody that still thinks 57 cents was too much? I m amazed at the notion that in the battle over addiction (the theme of our pulpit series this month), the strategy of prayer is so easily dismissed as a two-bit panacea that really can t handle the big guns of addiction. And yet leave that 57-cent piece out of the equation, and look at the personal mayhem and heartache that have accumulated as a result. Nobody is suggesting that the simple (but profoundly powerful) act of prayer is all anybody needs to break the back of a life-enslaving addiction (be it drugs, alcohol, sex, nicotine, food, gaming, et al). Mental health professionals recommend an arsenal of strategies and therapies for those who seek to break their addictions from Twelve Step group therapy to counseling to volunteer community service to medical treatment and more. But it is no coincidence that in the battle against addiction there is amazing unanimity regarding the power of personal prayer or, as the Wall Street Journal put it a few days ago, the power of frequent involvement in spiritual activities ( A11). So simple, so inexpensive, yet so often dismissed. Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Come near to God and He will come near to you (James 4:7-8). So simple, so inexpensive, but so potentially life-altering, life-saving. So in your own private battle with addiction, go ahead, take advantage of the large arsenal available today for healing. But whatever you do, do not omit prayer. To make prayer possible it cost God the most expensive enterprise in the universe. And yet for less than 57 cents, you can turn the key in prayer s ignition every single day, and put your faith in touch with the only One with power enough to set you free. Forever. 7

And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself. MUSIC ALIVE EAST AND WEST Eastern sounds meet western instruments today in Philip Jones remarkably colorful organ piece ( Here, O Lord, Your Servants Gather, today s opening voluntary) on the hymn melody titled TOKYO. Seemingly the pipe organ is an instrument only of importance in the Western world, yet it is in fact an instrument significantly represented in Japan. TOKYO is just one of many Japanese Christian melodies that bear such names as KAMITAKATA, KIYOKI FUMI, and OMIYA. Such hymns may have evocative titles as In Lonely Mountain Ways, O, You Fertile Soil, and A Grain of Wheat, along with other, more Western-sounding, titles. Whether here is in the East or in the West, speaking Chinese or Pidgin English or Japanese or Swahili, where two or three are gathered in His name, there He is. 9
