Turns out it s a 1988 a cappella recording of composer-singer Bobby McFerrin, singing and whistling the jingle: Here s a little song I wrote, you might want to sing it note for note Don t worry, be happy.... In every life we have some trouble, but when you worry you make it double Don t worry, be happy.... When you worry, your face will frown, and that will bring everybody down Don t worry, be happy! But what s astounding is that this nursery rhyme bit of feel-good quick-fix philosophy stole the ear of the nation that year, skyrocketing to the top of the charts, selling 18 million copies, and garnering four Grammy awards! (You can listen to McFerrin singing and whistling his own lyrics Continued on 7

REVIVAL & REFORMATION A CRY AND TESTIMONY FROM KING DAVID I call out at the top of my lungs, God! Answer! I ll do whatever you say. I called to you, Save me so I can carry out all your instructions. I was up before sunrise, crying for help, hoping for a word from you. I stayed awake all night, prayerfully pondering your promise. In your love, listen to me; in your justice, God, keep me alive. As those out to get me come closer and closer, they go farther and farther from the truth you reveal; But you re the closest of all to me, God, and all your judgments true. I ve known all along from the evidence of your words that you meant them to last forever. Take a good look at my trouble, and help me I haven t forgotten your revelation. Take my side and get me out of this; give me back my life, just as you promised. Salvation is only gibberish to the wicked because they ve never looked it up in your dictionary. Your mercies, God, run into the billions; following your guidelines, revive me. My antagonists are too many to count, but I don t swerve from the directions you gave. I took one look at the quitters and was filled with loathing; they walked away from your promises so casually! Take note of how I love what you tell me; out of your life of love, prolong my life. Your words all add up to the sum total: Truth. Your righteous decisions are eternal. Psalms 119: [The Message] 3

OPERATING EXPENSES HOMEBOUND MINISTRY / WHAT WOULD JESUS DO? Their relationship started years ago - Esther Hamel, Dorothy and her daughter, Kathy. But, as it often happens, life s activities separated them. About a year ago, however, Esther reconnected with Dorothy and Kathy and it seemed as if they had never been apart. Soon Dorothy became ill and Kathy poured out her sadness to Esther regarding her mom. This family now became Esther s mission as a member of our Homebound Ministry. Some months ago Dorothy s condition became critical and Esther s visits became more frequent. She invited me to accompany her on her next visit to the home. I prepared for the visit by bringing a few hymnals, appropriate reading materials, and the emblems for communion. Five other people were present at the home when we arrived. Dorothy was aware of our presence and smiled. A sweet peace came over her face as we all sang. Early the next morning, she passed away. Here is an excerpt of Kathy s note to Esther Hamel - I am so thankful that God chose you to be one of my first steadfast friends after moving here. Your Christ-like character has been a source of comfort and inspiration for me...but most of all helping me with mom for the last time was truly a cementing in our relationship. Bless you and thank you for being my friend. We believe Dorothy is now resting in peace, awaiting her Lord s return. What a privilege it was to serve one of God s precious children. - Marian Holder PRAY That we will continue showing God s love as we minister to others MORE INFO Marian Holder / mosrose72@att.net OPERATING EXPENSES GIVE TO LINE 2 Goal to-date $187,696 Received to-date $149,548 (Received to-date 2011) $149,960 As of April 21,

MASTER PLAN OF EVANGELISM HEALTH & WELLNESS / PIONEER SPRING RUN OFF Healthy living has long been a key part of the Adventist message. As part of the ongoing evangelistic efforts at Pioneer Memorial Church, the Health and Wellness team recently sponsored a communityoriented 5k run called the Pioneer Spring Run Off. This event was also a fundraiser for Harbor of Hope programs in Benton Harbor, which offer amazing evangelistic and outreach opportunities. What better way to promote the health message of the Adventist church, reach out to the community, and celebrate good health all at the same time? Despite cool weather, a crowd of 200 hardy runners and walkers (and 20 volunteers) gathered in the PMC parking lot on a clear Sunday morning to complete two scenic loops around the Andrews University campus. Participants included PMC members, Andrews University students, staff, and faculty, local community members, and even outof-state runners who found out about the race from Internet running sites. For some, this event served as a great introduction to the Seventh-day Adventist church. For others, it was a fun way to contribute to Harbor of Hope programs. For yet others, it was simply a fun time exercising with other people. The health ministry team at PMC is optimistic that this event will lead to increased involvement and participation, and is extremely thankful for the collaboration of the Nutrition & Wellness and Agriculture departments at Andrews University, Apple Valley Natural Foods, Runner s Edge Race Timing, and many volunteers. If you weren t able to join us for this event, remember that we have several ongoing health activities at PMC. We hope you will feel evangelistic enough to invite your friends to join us. As our friend Ron du Preez would say fitness to witness! 6 CHRISTIAN EDUCATION AA / SPRING BAND AND HANDBELL TOUR Beautiful sunny Kentucky and Tennessee were the destinations for this year s AA Concert Band and Handbell Ensemble tour. The first performance was at Highland Academy Church which adjoins their school in Portland, Tennessee. AA young people mingled with the youth from this sister school and experienced a taste of boarding school life during their overnight stay. Other performances were held at Middletown SDA Church, Louisville First Church and Lexington SDA Church. In Lexington, the musicians alternated their musical selections with the powerful testimony of Elder Paul Ratsara, president of the Southern Africa-Indian Ocean Division. It was a blessing to hear the amazing evangelism that is occurring in his territory. Along the way, the travelers stopped at several sites. At the Mammoth Cave National Park in Kentucky, they viewed the world s longest system of caves - the wonders of God s creation underground. They also visited Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Gardens. The spring tour gave our young people the opportunity to not only praise God with music, but also to enlarge their circle of friends, and see God in a variety of ways. It s all part of the Christian education we provide at Andrews Academy where we explore each student s academic, physical, creative, social and spiritual interests with like-minded people. PRAY that our faculty and staff may always point young people to God s amazing love MORE INFO Robert Overstreet / overstrr@andrews.edu CHRISTIAN EDUCATION GIVE TO LINE 3 Goal to-date $72,336 Received to-date $52,146 (Received to-date 2011) $48,943 As of April 21,

THE FOURTH WATCH cvwriql7fu.) But is Don t worry, be happy nothing more than a catchy tune and rhyme? Not according to research published just last week. Julia Boehm of the Harvard School of Public Health has reviewed scores of studies examining the effect of a positive outlook in life on heart health. Prior to these studies, most research was focused on showing how stress is associated with negative psychological traits that can lead to damage of arteries and the heart itself. But after reviewing dozens of more recent studies focusing on the effect of positive thinking on personal health, Julia Boehm says it s time to change strategies. Optimism in particular seems key, as a number of studies found the most optimistic people had half the risk of a first heart attack when compared to the least optimistic... Boehm found that people with a better sense of well-being tend to have healthier blood pressure, cholesterol and weight, and are more likely to exercise, eat healthier, get enough sleep and avoid smoking (South Bend Tribune , emphasis supplied). However, she cautions that these conclusions will need to be teased out in order to ascertain whether an optimistic spirit leads people to pursue a healthy lifestyle or whether living healthier helps you feel more positive. But either way, it turns out Don t worry, be happy may be more truth than poetry (or jingle). How did that wise King Solomon once put it? For as a man thinketh in his heart, so is he (Proverbs 23:7 KJV). And as the CONTINUED research now shows, how we think not only affects our emotional or mental heart it also impacts the health of our physical heart as well, that blessed ticker that is keeping us alive. So what do you say we keep that beating heart healthy to the max by choosing an optimistic spirit over a negative one. Rather than be the person who s always complaining that the glass is half empty, let s be the one who s excited because it s half full! Courage, hope, faith, sympathy, love, promote health and prolong life. A contented mind, a cheerful spirit, is health to the body and strength to the soul. A merry [rejoicing] heart doeth good like a medicine. Proverbs 17:22 (Ministry of Healing 241). Sounds an awful lot like Don t worry, be happy, doesn t it? 7

CALL TO WORSHIP Arise, shine, for your light has come; And the glory of the Lord has risen upon us. I am the root and the offspring of David, the bright morning star. Whoever follows Jesus will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life. Let us praise the name of the Lord. THE WORD JOHN 21:20-25 NKJV Then Peter, turning around, saw the disciple whom Jesus loved following, who also had leaned on His breast at the supper, and said, Lord, who is the one who betrays You? Peter, seeing him, said to Jesus, But Lord, what about this man? Jesus said to him, If I will that he remain till I come, what is that to you? You follow Me. Then this saying went out among the brethren that this disciple would not die. Yet Jesus did not say to him that he would not die, but, If I will that he remain till I come, what is that to you? This is the disciple who testifies of these things, and wrote these things; and we know that his testimony is true. And there are also many other things that Jesus did, which if they were written one by one, I suppose that even the world itself could not contain the books that would be written. Amen. MUSIC ALIVE GOING What do the last few days of the school term and hymn no. 377 have in common? The hymn is Go Forth, Go Forth With Christ, and a melody to which commonly it is sung is the basis for today s postlude. It s author, George Timms, wrote about the hymn, Through having to arrange ordinations in the diocese of London, I became aware that suitable hymns were few. This caused me to write the hymn in question... While we are having no formal ordinations on this last Sabbath before Commencement Weekend, there still remains a strong sense of spiritual preparation for going out into the world. Stanza two begins, Go forth, go forth with Christ, With purpose not your own, Each vict ry you shall gain Through Him your Lord alone... 9
