You pick up the phone and the cheerful voice on the other end introduces herself as Samantha West. Bright and engaging, she proceeds before you realize it is a soft-sell pitch for insurance. But as she continues, something doesn t seem quite right. Perhaps it s the phone connection. Maybe it s her voice, you wonder. Finally you blurt out, Are you are a real voice or are you digital? Her charming laugh in response is winsome. But then when you try to engage her in small talk, she balks. Still curious you ask, What s the main ingredient in tomato soup? She replies she doesn t understand the question. Turns out Samantha West is a robot who denies she is a robot, who functions much like a remotecontrolled car, operated by a real person working at a call center 2 Continued on 7

3 I WILL DO A NEW THING DOWN IN THE D 3 S Have you ever had the D s 3 Disappointment, Doubt, and Despondency? Maybe you are thinking, Yes, I am there right now. Or, I have been there; it could so easily happen again. If you are following Jesus, you will have the D 3 s. Jesus actually tells us that we will. He told us we would be insulted, persecuted, and have lies spread about us, but that we should rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven (Matthew 5:11-12). Even David was in the D 3 s, For troubles without number surround me; my sins have overtaken me, and I cannot see. They are more than the hairs of my head, and my heart fails within me (Psalm 40:12). However, there is very good news. When there is no sunshine, the snow blows, and temperatures drop further than you have seen in many months, God promises we can hold fast, and He will not let us go. The righteous person may have many troubles, but the Lord delivers him from them all (Psalm 34:19). In Hebrews we read, God is doing what is best for us, training us to live God s holy best. At the time, discipline isn t much fun.... Later, of course, it pays off handsomely, for it s the well-trained who find themselves mature in their relationship with God. So don t sit around on your hands! No more dragging your feet!... Help each other out. And run for it! (Hebrews 12: 4-13). David told his son Solomon, Be strong and courageous, and do the work. Do not be afraid or discouraged, for the Lord God, my God, is with you (1 Chronicles 28:20). And Paul also told us to glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope (Romans 5:3-4). Hope! That is what we want! So what can you do today to help get yourself out of the winter D 3 s? Are you thinking, I do not have time for that GROW Group everyone seems to be talking about? Do you want God to do a new thing in your life? Do you want the impossible to happen? Try doing a new thing with God and see what He has in store for you now! 4 STUDENT AID STUDENT AID / LETTERS OF GRATITUDE Thank you, Pioneer members, for your ongoing support of the Student Aid Fund. This money goes directly to helping keep Our Own young people in Adventist Christian education at our local Ruth Murdoch Elementary School and Andrews Academy. Here are two thank-you letters from grateful students addressed to all of you who support the Student Aid Fund. From an Andrews Academy student I would like to personally thank you for your help and support on my behalf for this school year. It means a great deal to me that you would help me with my financial situation so that I could complete this year, my senior year, at Andrews Academy, and graduate with my class. I have worked diligently to start this year off strong and I am maintaining my goal to finish successfully. So far I have earned above average grades in all of my classes and I participate in school activities. I realize Christian education is both a sacrifice and a privilege neither of which I intend to take lightly. When I prayed and asked God to open this door, He did. It is my intention to make good use of this opportunity by maintaining my grades and making good on every opportunity presented. From a RMES student Thank you for the money that we need in order to come to Ruth Murdoch Elementary School so I can make something of myself and learn more about Jesus. We really need the money and we are so glad that I can stay in a school with my friends. I have had so many good times at RMES. I am glad I m able to go to school and to church to hang out with my friends and to praise God. 5 MASTER PLAN OF EVANGELISM MEDIA MINISTRIES / REACHING AROUND THE WORLD Mario and Ofelia have been watching New Perceptions, the telecast from Pioneer Memorial Church on 3ABN for a long time. During an appeal opportunity they called our toll-free phone number to request a copy of Steps to Christ. Our operators took the request and sent a copy out right away. Through the Holy Spirit s leading, Mario and Ofelia read the book, filled out the included interest card and mailed it in. When the card was received, our partners at Adventist Information Ministries (AIM) immediately connected Mario PRAY For those who are watching New Perceptions MORE INFO Nickilos Wolfer / wolfer@pmchurch.org and Ofelia with an elder at their local Seventh-day Adventist Church who contacted them and established a solid friendship. Mario and Ofelia began attending church and were soon baptized. Now Mario and Ofelia are sharing their faith with new people who are currently receiving Bible studies because of their invitation. God is using this media ministry to reach people around the world for His kingdom. Thank you for your support of the Media Ministries and MPE. 6 CHRISTIAN EDUCATION RMES / HEALTHY SMOOTHIES Part of a balanced education is learning about a balanced diet. The counsel of the Spirit of Prophecy is that We cannot safely be guided by the customs of society. The disease and suffering that everywhere prevail are largely due to popular errors in regard to diet. In order to know what are the best foods, we must study God s original plan for man s diet (Ministry of Healing, p ). One of the steps our Junior High students took in this exploration of healthy foods was the discovery of blending our favorite berries to make an extraordinary smoothie. The young people watched with great anticipation as a powerful Vita Mix blender transformed strawberries, blueberries, red raspberries and blackberries into a mouthwatering delight. What was the absolute value of this super smoothie? The Oregon Raspberry & Blackberry Commission says that scientists have found berries to have some of the highest antioxidant levels of any fresh fruits. Fresh berries are some of the most powerful (and delicious) diseasefighting foods available. Antioxidants, dietary fiber, phytochemicals, and Vitamin C are all beneficial ingredients found in today s Junior High chapel presentation. What will be the next health nugget for our Junior High students? Will we be making french fries or talking about the true value of glazed doughnuts? Maybe we will be making our own banana ice-cream with 100% natural ingredients. In conclusion I would say our recent chapel was a berry nice introduction to a new type of fast food. 7 THE FOURTH WATCH CONTINUED outside the U.S. (TIME 12/30/13, p. 14). Why Samantha? So the thick foreign accents of the overseas callers won t give themselves away. Instead, these human puppeteers choose from a series of recorded responses, using West s voice to hide their accents. As TIME magazine observes, she may very well become the future of telemarketing. Maybe they borrowed a page from Heaven s playbook. After all, isn t it God s strategy to use your voice and not just your voice, but your life, your mannerisms, your very presence as a representation of the Lord Jesus Himself? So that when people hear you, they are strangely drawn to Him. Jesus pointed out, It is enough for students to be like their teachers, and servants like their masters (Matthew 10:25 NIV). Because when you are like Him when you have the same mindset as Christ Jesus (Philippians 2:5) you become a winsome and contagious sell for the Master, don t you? Which is what Steps to Christ is saying: The humblest and poorest of Credit: istock the disciples of Jesus can be a blessing to others. They may not realize that they are doing any special good, but by their unconscious influence they may start waves of blessing that will widen and deepen, and the blessed results they may never know until the day of final reward. When the love of Christ is enshrined in the heart, like sweet fragrance it cannot be hidden. Its holy influence will be felt by all with whom we come in contact (83, 77). So no matter how insignificant you may think yourself to be, when Jesus love radiates from your life, you become Heaven s agent for drawing the people in your world to Christ. 9 CALL TO WORSHIP Let us look to our God today and every day of life. For God is our hope, our strength, our refuge, our peace. Let us lean upon our God from our youth through our old age. Then we call be upheld, and taught God s most excellent ways. THE WORD PSALM 122:6-9 NIV Pray for the peace of Jerusalem: May those who love you be secure. May there be peace within your walls and security within your citadels. For the sake of my family and friends, I will say, Peace be within you. For the sake of the house of the Lord our God, I will seek your prosperity. MUSIC ALIVE CONNECTED Right across from The Church Has One Foundation, no. 348, is another hymn, Built on the Rock, no. 347, quite similar to it and the basis for today s closing organ music. Which may bring one to the topic of topics that appear at the bottom of hymn pages. In this case, both hymns are in topical area of COMMUNITY IN CHRIST, a topic that includes hymns 344 to 354. The textual connectedness of these eleven hymns can make an interesting study, especially as three of them have the word Love in their titles. How does hymn 349, God Is Love, connect with Built on the Rock, hymn 347? As the former hymn says, God is love, and where true love is God Himself is there. 9

Come to the Youth Chapel at 5:30 PM and close the Sabbath with us! THE FLOOD The Flood: Did it Really Happen? It is one of the most intriguing questions of our time. In this unique 4D event, you will join international speaker, writer and producer, Rich Aguilera, as he explores the evidence about this catastrophic event described in the Bible. Rich s dynamic presentations are designed to appeal to both kids and adults though his use of images, videos, props, special effects, and audience interaction. There will also be a special screening of the film The Creation: The Earth Is a Witness, produced by German filmmaker Henry Stober and shot over 4 years in 70 countries. The film will be presented on a giant, theatrical 30- foot screen. The event will take place today in the Howard Performing Arts Center at 6:30 PM. Tickets may be purchased at the HPAC box office. PIONEER FAMILY LIFE 12 HEALTH EVANGELISM A Health Evangelism training seminar will be held today at 5 PM in the Village SDA Church (Riess Chapel). Elizabeth Tan, a pastor, public health worker, and credentialed worker for 18 years under the GC, will give a presentation on how to do outreach using a health approach. Learn how to conduct health needs assessment, identify the felt needs of the community, and conduct health intervention on the problem identified. You will also learn planning, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of the health program that contributes to a sustainable health project and that will lead the target population to accept Jesus Christ. SPRING GROW GROUPS You have been hearing about GROW Groups for a while now, and we are finally at the kick-off! Are you registered for the group of your choice? This is your chance! 14 PIONEER FAMILY LIFE [CONT] THANK YOU Dear Church Family, Thank you so very much for all your prayers and cards since my stroke on December 22. I am still in rehabilitation having therapy. As of January 28, I will be at the new Pine Ridge Rehabilitation and Skilled Nursing Facility on Cleveland Avenue in Stevensville. Your continued prayers for my recovery will be much appreciated. 15 HEALTH NUGGETS WALKING How many steps do you take in a day? If you have a pedometer, great! But what about the rest of us? It is recommended to get 10,000 steps per day. The average person takes 3,000 steps per day. HELPFUL TIP: If you are looking for a place to walk indoors this Winter then here s a suggestion. If you walk the second floor of Nethery to Buller Hall 6 complete laps you will have walked 1 mile. Get a buddy and get walking this week! CHALLENGE This week s challenge is to increase your daily steps. Suggestions: Park further from entrances, take the stairs, walk the dog, take a walk with a friend.
